Vegas (4 Viewers)

:lmao:  I am officially the cheapest guy in here. My wife and I recently stayed at Rio because we got three nights free. We ate dinner at the Yard house at the linq. We drove and parked. I had a few too many. So we walked back at the end of the night to the Rio because I am too cheap to get a cab. Then in the morning I went for a run and snagged the car.
You and your wife were fortunate. I would need a gun to make that walk late at night.

You flatter me. It was like 8:30pm. I am not just cheap. I am old too. I hike almost every day in vegas(in the summertime I am frequently on the mountain at sunrise), it is why I always rent a car. As soon as I have had a few, it is lights out for me.

The new M-life(MGM properties) website is a 1000 times better than the old. Seems the offers are better too. Perhaps they are trying to compensate for the negative feedback about the new parking fees.

Could use a little hotel room advice here.

I am heading to Vegas September 8th-11th with my girlfriend and both our families.  I'm picking up the rooms (I'm an idiot but this is the first time they are meeting, and trying to make a good impression).  I am just realizing how expensive this will be.  I have Starwood points but those hotels aren't really on the strip and a lot of these people have never been to Vegas so want them to experience.   I have another credit card where I can get about $2500 of visa cash cards if I turn in my points which helps.  Anyway, I've been checking Expedia and for those dates for any decent hotel it seems to be around $200 a night.  Somehow I got on Veneitians mailing list (I've never stayed there) and got an offer the expires tomorrow for rooms at $200 a night if I prepay (doesn't include $32 a day fee but includes taxes.). Comes to about $700 total for a 3 day stay before the daily fee, so $800 per room.   The question is, is this a great deal on Venetian (claims 33% off) that I have to take it.  I know we are going for sure, so not worried about having to cancel.  Or should I wait for a better deal?   While out there I think seeing Human nature would be fun, and that is at the Venetian hotel, but besides that we are going to the George Strait concert and other plans are just to walk around and see things (Bellagio water show, different casinos etc).   A

What do you say Vegas vets?  Veneitian worth pulling the trigger now and just locking up?  Can I find a better deal?  Are the rooms there as nice as they look?
I agree with Noonan and the others. The Venetian is my go-to hotel in Vegas. $200 isn't bad. It's not great either but you probably won't find it much lower.

I think it's the nicest hotel with the nicest rooms in the best location.  So if you're trying to make a bit of a good impression, snag the rooms and have a good time.

One piece of advice - don't bother upgrading the room of you see a decent price on those. The standard room is awesome. We upgraded to a bigger suite last time I was there and I actually liked the standard room better.

The parking fees are awful... just feels like another way to squeeze money out of your patrons over a service where the demand has never really exceeded the supply (those giant parking garages are rarely ever full).  And I'm a guy that doesn't really object to businesses charging what they want - let the free market sort it all out.  I'm curious as to how much this will affect people's decisions to drive into town versus flying or just going to their local casino.

With all that being said, the parking fees aren't anywhere near as obnoxious as the "resort fees" which cannot be avoided under any circumstance.

I hate the extra fees. What bothers me the most is that I think people fall for that crap, so it will only get worse. I actually think people get excited when they book a room at Bally's for 70 bucks and think, hey wow, 4 years ago I paid 69, awesome! Ooops. Resort fee.

Just booked four nights in a Resort Tower King at The Mirage from 9/15 - 9/19. Couldn't find it less than $300/night anywhere I looked (that's inclusive of taxes and fees, so it was like $245 before). I'm seeing people in here talking about Venetian for $200/night and people wondering why someone would pay so much for a room, and I always feel like I'm late to the party on finding deals. We looked at the usual booking sites, and $230 or so for even a standard king room seemed to be the best offer around. What am I missing?

It really varies on time of year and if there are big events in town. I find that Christmas is an awesome time to go - we get rooms at the Venetian for $140 ish a night, even cheaper in mid December. Some summer weeks are awesome too. People don't want to be there in late July with no events in town.

Did you try Priceline? I see some really good deals on there sometimes too.

Not sure what this means. Nearly 100% of the strip and downtown hotels have the resort fees. I guess if you dont want to "fall for that crap", you could skip Vegas. Resort fees have been around for several years now and they don't really seem to be "hidden" like when they first arrived.

Yeah, it was a little bit more than booking it right through the hotel itself. I dunno, maybe it's just me! :)

Well if you saw you were booking the Mirage on Priceline then you were just looking at their hotel prices. You need to bid, or look at their special deals (I forget the actual name of it, but it's a separate tab). You won't know which hotel you're getting, but you'll know the location and star level.

Oh yeah, I hit the Walgeens every time I'm in Vegas. A not so hidden gem, IMO.
Ok, I'm here now, is there a specific Walgreen's I should be hitting? We passed 2 or 3 today. Got beer at CVS to start which was fine, couple Stone, Lagunitas, etc.. that don't make it to Canada but will probably make a further pilgrimage for more room beers and ideally some cans to bring home.

Also, our room at the Luxor is nice and with Trams and Walkways all over the place, I don't really get the hate for it. Sure others look nicer but they also cost more... and some that cost more don't look like any great shakes

The Luxor was fine IMO. The part I hated most was no wifi in the rooms. I'm sure most people just use their phones, but it seems odd that they don't have it.

NV - try to hit Burger Bar between Luxor and Mandalay Bay. Great beer selection and outstanding burgers.

I have WiFi in my room, using it now.its "free" in the sense that it's part of the amenities covered by the resort fees.

Awesome! Glad the room is nice.

Hope you guys are having a great time.

I went to Las Vegas for 7 nights and lived to tell the tale. This was my very first visit to LV, and my wife's second time (though her first was when she was a kid, so really this was her first trip too). We only did 7 nights because 6 of the nights were comped @ Flamingo and Caesars (plus fee, but whatever), and we planned two day trips to Red Rock and Grand Canyon, so I didn't think it would be too much time in LV.

General thoughts:
-7 nights was too much, lol. I think 4 would be perfect. 5 if you're doing a trip off the strip.
-Wish the strip was more walkable. Hate having to go in and out of casinos to continue my path down the strip
-given the above, I think the perfect spot to stay is Caesars/Bellagio, because the rooms are very nice, and across the street is the LInq-Flamingo-Cromwell-Ballys-Paris-Hollywood strip. All of those places are easily walkable. On the other side of the road (Bellagio-Cosmo-NYNY-etc...) everything is very far apart.

1) Lodging

  • Flamingo was fine, but I'm glad we stayed here first b/c Caesars blew it out of the water. We had one of the newer "Go" rooms on the 21st floor of Flamingo w/ strip view. Nice room. Didn't gamble much @ Flamingo. Did use the pool twice. Awesome pool.
  • Caesars was incredible. We had a room in the Palace tower, really high up, overlooking the Garden of the Gods pool area. I've heard the Augustus is the nicest tower, but I can't imagine it being any better than Palace. The amenities were great too-- used the spa, the pool, the concierge for discounted Absinthe tickets. Very happy that this was after Flamingo and not the other way around.
2) Gambling-- totally lost my ###. Told the wife that we were only down $1,500 but we actually dropped about $2,500. Just got my ### kicked every time I sat down, with the exception of one prolonged Pai Gow session @ Caesars. Ran $400 up to $1,300 over the course of several hours (played right through night time and my wife found me at the table for breakfast). RE: Limits-- I was surprised at how many $5 and $10 tables I could find on the strip, even at the nicer casinos. So I liked that.

  • Caesars-- most of my time was spent here. It's a pretty solid place to play, but it's a little small. I'm used to one casino towns where the gaming floor is massive, but most of the floors in Vegas are pretty tiny. Smoky here, but that doesn't bother me. A lot of 6/5 blackjack here, which I didn't play.
  • Flamingo-- cheaper limits. From what I remember a good beer selection. "Topless" blackjack dancer area, but I never saw any boobs. This goes for every "pleasure pit" area in LV. All say topless, but they don't get topless.
  • The Cromwell-- No luck here, but I loved this place. They have 100x odds @ Craps. Nice layout, but again a small gaming area.
  • Paris-- large gaming area, didn't play here. Thought the decor was pretty cool.
  • Bellagio-- very nice gaming area. I did play here some. Generally higher limits than most other casinos on the strip.
  • Casino Roayle- I vaguely remember stumbling into this place. I remember thinking the ceilings were super low, and finding like 4 gaming tables. One Awesome thing-- they have SCULPIN on draft for $4 (cash only bar).
3) Shows

  • "O" at Bellagio-- Worth every penny. This was my first Cirque show, and from what I gather it's the best one to see. Totally believe it. It was incredible.
  • Absinthe @ Caesars-- very good! Hard to describe, it's like watching a satire of a Cirque Du Soleil show, except the acrobatics and performances are fantastic. Extremely funny show, and some nice T&A. Would definitely recommend.
  • Ray Romano & David Spade @ Mirage-- good show. don't remember who opened the show for these two, but Spade came out 2nd and Ray closed. I'd say Ray's act was more put together and technically better, but Spade was very funny. After the show they both came on stage and did some Q&A. Neat experience. Of course someone asked Spade about his favorite Chris Farley memory, which I'm sure he's answered about a thousand times.
4) Food-- can't remember everything so I'll just do the highlights

  • Mon Ami Gabi @ Paris-- very first morning in town, stopped here for brunch. Wife had the waffles w/ caramelized apples, and I had bagel & lox. Everything was delicious. We sat outside overlooking the Bellagio fountains. Very pretty.
  • China Poblano @ Cosmo-- first of all Cosmo is an awesome casino and I'd love to stay here next time. The food here was very good. I split the 21-vegetable fried rice (add shrimp) and some dumplings with the wife. This was so good we almost came back for more the same day, lol.
  • Holsteins Shakes and Buns @ Cosmo-- right next door to China Poblano. Their thing is hamburgers and shakes. We split "The Original" hamburger and each had a shake. My shake was the coffee one (plus booze) and the wife got the cookies & cream (sans booze). Both were excellent.
  • Pizza Rock @ Downtown LV-- heard about this place from a LV podcast. Didn't disappoint. Killer beer selection.
  • Border Grill @ Mandalay-- great mexican food, killer view overlooking the beach.

The TAG bar at the Linq has over 200+ craft beers in bottle. They comp you obviously if you play bartop video poker. But the shark move is to play their bubble craps machine or the electronic blackjack (both located in the bar area), and you'll have waittress service from the TAG bar and craft beers are comped. Tip the waittress, and she could care less if you are actually playing the games. They have many west coast craft beers, I strongly suggest the Ballast Point Sculpin

Staying at Harrah's in a few weeks. Yelp reviews are tearing that property up. Only sleeping (if able) there but does anyone know if that property is a POS now? It has a great location that is why I booked there.

Stayed there in February. Stayed 4 nights. Had no issue with the room or the casino. No frills room, but it was clean, had everything you needed and with the exception of the guy in the next room puking his brains out at 4am the first night, was quiet.

If it's just a crash pad, it's fine. It's a great location.

Heading out this weekend. Uber is the best way to get around town now? Where does the driver pick you up? I'm assuming they can't go anywhere near the cab stands so the driver will call you to arrange pickup location?

They wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't tricking people. That's the whole point. They want people to think they are getting a room for 69 bucks a night. Even though people know there is a resort fee I bet if you asked "How much was the room you just booked for your vegas trip?" They would more often than not say the price without resort fee. So while you might be very logical and always calculate these things, there are tons of people that don't. There are tons of people that also don't even notice them, like foreigners. I have overheard a couple arguments at front desks where people were so confused. "I already paid for the room!" "Well yes, but you just paid the room rate, not the resort fee."

So if nobody fell for it, it wouldnt exist and it would make it easier to scout prices. Instead you have to make sure you click through enough to get to where the resort fee is and calculate it out. Maybe you like doing that. I don't.

Ive never used Uber. Are they that much better that you would wait instead of hopping in a cab thats already there?
1) Hotels have a designated "ride share" pickup spot. I know @ Caesar's it is in the main area w/ the cabs but on the other side of the roundabout. The UBER app actually tells you what to look for.

2) yes, UBER is much cheaper. Our ride from the airport to Flamingo was $11.

Perfect crash spot.  We stayed there and then played (other than sports) everywhere else on the strip pretty much.  And actually they have the best odds in the sports book vs. other chains.  So if you do any sports gambling, bet there and then watch elsewhere (if you watch).

what kind of odds?

Straight bets were lined about the same, though I felt like I got a 1/2 point or so on most of my plays vs. other books.  But any parlays/teasers are shaded for the player at Harrah's and the chain that they are a part of (Venetian, Bellagio, Flamingo, Cosmo).  I did some comparing at a few different books.  We watched the games at The Mirage because their book is amazing, but if they had a parlay that paid 8:1, Harrah's paid 10:1.  Mirage 6:1 was 7:1 at Harrah's.  Teasers that paid 3:2 at Mirage were 3.5:2 at Harrah's.  That sort of thing.

Stayed at the Venetian recently.  Got out of the shower to find a cockroach on my towel.  It was the towel they put on the shower door so it's likely it was there when they delivered it.  I complained and they brought new towels.  I kid you not when I say there was a cockroach on that towel as well.  Couldn't believe it.  It was almost like a joke or something.  I complained again but it took forever to get anywhere.  They ended up taking care of incidentals.  At checkout this had not been done and I had to go over it again with them.   One lady on one phone call was incredibly rude.

Unbelievable.  This was VIP services as well.

Weird. I've stayed there literally dozens of times and I've never had an issue like that. But I'll be sure to be a little more aware when using the towels...

We actually ended up at the Venetian for the Sunday night game after spending a decent part of the day at Mirage.  I'm not sure which I preferred, but you're right the Venetian is also sweet.  I preferred the Mirage by quite a bit over MGM where we have been a couple years, and by a ton over a place like Harrah's. :)   I did really like that we could sit in the burger bar at the back of the Venetian and have dinner and watch the game on the giant screen.  This next year we're thinking of setting up shop either at the Plaza downtown or at South Point - kinda tired of the Strip experience.  Venetian your favorite?

Venetian is my favorite. Part of it is that I usually stay there. But it's comfortable and they have lots of nice tvs, so I usually find myself there even if I'm not staying there.

On football Sunday, I usually bet on Saturday night and reserve a couple seats for all day Sunday. $1k is enough to get two seats.

Same thing with me, stay there every time.  It was a little hard to believe, the second coming.  But it happened.  I have it on video.

We always stay at Plaza (cheapest place on freemont...literally just sleep there).  Do the strip in doses.....love being on freemont for late night drunk craps

As a person that owns several properties in Vegas and goes there 8-10x a year--I agree with your assessment.  Of the hotels that you mentioned--I would personally rank them Venetian, mirage, MGM, Harrahs.

In regards to your next trip--your choice between the Plaza and the South Point really depends on what you want your Vegas experience to be.  The South Point is a very nice (and well priced) hotel that has a lot to offer--nice rooms, on site movie theater, I believe a bowling alley, decent dining options, but is fairly isolated from other casinos on the South side of the strip.   If you go to the South Point---you would basically have to either drive, uber or taxi to other casinos should you want to gamble.  There is a nice shopping mall pretty close to it--so if you are going with people that are interested in shopping--that's something to consider.

In regards to the Plaza in downtown--it is too a nice hotel. They recently underwent a major renovation/upgrade.  They purchased a lot of the furniture from the failed Fontainebleu project that's now owned by Carl Icahn on the strip.   Downtown is basically like an old strip--you can walk from hotel to hotel to gamble/drink/ watch the street performers..etc.. Fremont street and downtown has really gone through a bit of a renaissance--and is really energy filled.   If you want to go to Vegas to gamble, party, see crazy people and things--I'd easily vote the Plaza over the South point.  If you do go to the Plaza---my advice is to walk all the way down Fremont street--even past where the big overhead canopy ends.  On the far end of Fremont street--they've put some really cool dive bars and restaurants that sometimes have awesome live music.  There is also a container park which is really fun. It's a big shopping mall that is made entirely of shipping containers.  It features a lot of local artisans, and great local chefs.  Also--Fremont street is a short ride to the premium outlet mall--so you also have some solid shopping opportunities there too.

I hope this information helps you make whatever decision makes the best sense for you.

Thanks for this.  Group of buddies, all in our 40s, that go to bet football, play cards, drink, and people watch to some extent.  Yeah, we do Fremont for at least a few hours every trip.  We really are kind of tired of the Strip scene (both expense and craziness).  Fremont is a consideration just as a change of pace and what we expect to be a less crowded day of NFL betting on Sunday, but still a place to people watch without the rowdiness of the Strip - at least in our experience.  One of the buddies though is getting more reclusive as he ages, and he pretty much said he feels like he wants a more quiet home base where he can kind of "un-sensitize" if that makes any sense.  So South Point became a consideration.  His brother and I don't care where we go, but we want to have a sports book there and be able to step off the elevator and be playing blackjack or video poker within 30 seconds. :)  Our other two buddies don't get a say, they just go where we decide.  Any more input you have (someone in my life suggested Red Rocks?) would be welcome. I love this trip...it is literally one of the top 3 highlights of the year for me every year.

Right on. I'm glad you found my post helpful.  Reading your post about the various personalities of the people in your group--I actually do like the Red Rock Hotel idea for you guys.  The Red Rock hotel is considered one of the most premium hotels that is owned and managed by the Station casino group. It's closer to the Summerlin area (which is very nice) and is really close to Red Rock canyon (which is absolutely beautiful if you haven't seen it yet).  It has a very nice/large casino and I do believe it has a decent size sports book.  Keep in mind--the Red Rock casino is about 25-30 minutes away from the strip--so if you are going to taxi/uber from the airport--it will get pricey.   I do think it will check a lot of "boxes" for what your group is looking for. Nice rooms, well priced for a premium quality hotel, nice size casino, no shortage of drinks, and quiet enough for even the slightly reclusive dude.  In brutal honesty--you won't get the awesome people watching that you will on the strip or even on fremont street--as there aren't as many "crazy's" there.   The vast majority of fellow gamblers in that casino will most likely be either locals or repeat travelers that are looking for a more "toned" down vegas.   I would personally call the Red Rock casino nicer than the South Point--as the finishes are nicer and more updated.  I would lean towards Red Rock for you guys.

We're a pretty similar group...probably a half a decade younger.  FWIW, South Point sounds like a bad idea....might seem nice at first, but you're basically stuck.  We always stay at freemont (Plaza) b/c of the convenience....can walk everywhere, have a variety of different things at our disposal, etc.  We watch the games at the Westgate, which is no frills, but the best sportsbook in Vegas IMO.  To break up the day, we hit up the linq, Emeril's pilazzo, etc....but staying downtown was the best decision our group ever made.

Cool thanks TF. Do you watch and bet at Westgate? Is that a taxi ride away? We have never been. Or do you bet at Plaza and watch at Westgate?

We literally just sleep at the plaza.  Westgate is a $10ish cab ride away.  We're big sports gamblers and big drinkers, so we go all day Saturday/Sunday at the Westgate (with the occasional breakup here or there).  We figured out staying downtown is the best bet b/c after the games are over we can all just walk around and gamble for cheap and just walk back to the hotel whenever people feel like crashing....one at a time.

I've never placed a sports bet downtown at all.

What time do you have to get to Westgate to secure seats?

There's a huge theatre that they open for NFL games, so we go there....it's never filled up so we've always had a seat.  For college, the games start at 9am, so we typically wake up and just go straight there....usually around 7:30.  We never have a problem that early.
