The main hotel at the new City Center (City Center), opening New Years Eve. Well, I am not sure when it is opening, City Center is getting rolled out piecemeal.I'll be interested to see how it goes. It should be said if you are staying at Aria, you will be center strip, but still a 10 minute walk to the strip. It's set pretty far back.
It's opening NYE but it's "opening" in 10 days. The casino is open now AFAIK. This is from talking to them on the phone about my trip in a few weeks. They were begging me to come. Knowing nothing of me than my name was offered 50 meal credit 50 game credit per day for a 100/night room. And all their rooms are like the Wynn rooms from what I gather.
Just tried calling for my trip on 1/16. No such luck for me. They quoted me $259/night (same as website). I asked if that's the best they could do and she said it was, then she asked if I wanted to check Bellagio or Vdara. You got a special hookup or anything you can PM?

I have no hookups at all. I just called primarily to see when they were opening the casino which is supposed to be just epic huge. Checked on rates and they basically just spread their legs.

Anyone have suggestions (or link to good discussion in this thread) for March Madness? First time out there for that. Been to vegas twice prior though never really took it in fully. Will be going with few folks from work (fun guys). Looking to definitely make a bunch of bets but also looking for poker / nightlife. I've heard that nightlife is a swordfight during MM weekend. Not that big of a deal as I've got a GF but scenery is always nice. Pointers for the books are welcome as well. I've heard you gotta show up at dawn or before to have a chance at seats/table. Buddy has mentioned ESPNZone but heard the lines can be hours long there as well.
MM is a blast but you are accurate on all accounts.

Interesting. Definitely an option in March....and they could be begging even more by then.

As far as nightlife, hang back on that question. There's a bunch of new places opening in the next month, and the nightclub wars are beginning. XS at Encore is #1 right now. I'd also check and see if any pools open by then. A few might. I don't think a swordfight is a problem, at the right place. The door won't let it get like that. None of the books have huge seating. They will be packed. ESPN Zone is in NY/NY and the entrance is right next to the sports book. Terrible sports book, but gets the job done. I think it's worth calling to see if the accept reservations. The lines shouldn't matter, because if there's a line, why wait? Anyone in there isn't leaving till games are over, right? But if you can get a reservation, do it. Because even if you get a seat, it's uncomfortable, no service, etc.
The Paris opens up their theatre for the games, and it's very cool. Three movie size screens showing the games going on at that particular time. They server beer/food there too (food very limited, hot dogs, popcorn, that kind of thing), as well as take bets in that section. It's a great place to watch the games.
Great call. Never went in the Paris. First come/first serve? How close to the book?
They open up a small mini book there with 2-3 windows, so you can get in line to bet about 3 minutes from getting up from your seat.Seats are first come first served, but there's always plenty of openings. It's theatre style seating (standard movie type seats) , so not really a bad seat there.Bar area is limited, but they have bucket of beer specials (bud/bud light 4 for $5) and the hot dogs/brats aren't bad. There's also restroom facilities close by (to help with the bucket specials).edit to add: VERY active crowd in there, especially when one of the biggies (Kansas, Texas, etc) is playing.

Yeah I personally think ESPN Zone will be a madhouse (and I doubt reservations, but definitely check if that's where you want to watch the games). The sportsbook, as crappy and small as it is, is right there next to ESPN as raider mentions, so bets would probably be easy to make. I was there during the NBA playoffs one year in May and it was packed in there. As far as the books and getting seats, I'm not too sure on yet. Since the games will be starting at approx 9am out there, I don't think it's that big of a stretch for at least one person in my group to suck it up and go sit at a book early at like 6am to get at least one table. The problem is just doing it, especially after a long night. Some sportsbooks are more group friendly then others. Luxor, for example, is just a room of long tables with a tv at each seat and then some bigger tvs on the wall.....so not very group friendly. Stat's post on Paris is interesting, have to look into that.

I called last night looking to book a room during the week for early January. Figured it'd be a good shot to get some nice rates. Got some foreign chick. I am a member of the MGM club or whatever, am considered local, had poker references, etc. but none of it seemed to phase the chick. She cared more about whether I was a member of AAA. Perhaps I did something wrong, but she certainly wasn't begging for my business and it is still way way cheaper to stay at the NY/NY, Luxor, MGM type places.

That's interesting. I think that's stupid, but maybe they can fill it. I wonder: Were you asking for Aria, or any of the hotels there?

what dates are you going? that usually determines everything as far as room rates go. i'm guessing my saturday check-in doesn't help my case.

Had to change it up today. Now going for divisional playoff weekend (2nd weekend). Saturday to Monday. Got 169 at Pallazo with some meal comps and I think gift shop comps  (hey, but that includes a gondola ride!).Gonna try out the book in the pallazo which is the stadium seating room for dinner Saturday. May go to cut Sunday or South Coast for Michaels, but that's TBD.

Okay been digging up recommendations from a few places and here's what I've come up with. Please correct/adjust/suggest as needed :goodposting:

TRIP>

March Madness Opening Weekend 2010

Thursday Morning (10am) Thru Sunday Noon. Staying at Harrahs.

Going with few cool co-workers and a client (laid back). 2 older (40s) coworkers are married but not stiffs. Younger coworker is my age-ish (early 30s) and single. I've got a GF so will be playing wingman to single buddy.... he'll need the help too.

GOALS:

Sportsbetting (obviously) - $25-50 bettor

Poker - Solid Player - Mostly Rings (Play 80% 4/8 Limit / 20% 1/2 NL in Tunica)

Dining - Will likely hit a nice dinner or two as we'll be entertaining a client. I'll likely hit cheap/low-key options during the day (ie Subway/Burger Joints/ etc)

Socializing - Definitely looking to mix / mingle

NIGHT LIFE:

This is where I'm looking for the most guidance. Given the company, I'm not down for the superclub/bottleservice gig. Looking primarily toward good bars / Ultra Lounges favoring 20/30-somethings. Last trip I hit Coyote Ugly / Ghost Bar / Seamless and enjoyed all 3. I've got a slight preference to proximity to Harrahs though I'll likely be cabbing it most everywhere so it's not a big deal.

Here's what I'm looking at thus far:

• Carnival Court - Harrahs

• Margaritaville - Flamingo

• Hard Rock - Center Bar (hit/miss?)

• Piano Bars - Harrahs / NY NY

• SToney's - If I/We decide to venture south

• Drais - Still decent or worthless now?

• Seamless - AFter hours Possibility. enjoyed it last time

Thoughts / Suggestions?

--

POKER / SPORTSBOOK SUGGESTIONS:

I'm primarily looking for setups with a good combination of Decent Sportsbook (not TOO packed / fun / decent drink service) and hopefully having a poker room close enough to run bets from (ideally w/ some TVs to watch the games). I imagine the action should be equally solid everywhere. Keep in mind we'll have a client in tow. Laid back as he may be, total dives are likely not in the equation for daytime sports-betting/poker.

Currently Looking at:

• Mirage (decent book / decent poker / bad drink service?)

• Caesars Palace (Solid Book / Big Poker Room / Too Mobbed?)

• MGM Grand (Huge Book / Solid poker room / Close together?)

Very much open to suggestions/feedback here.

EDIT TO ADD: ALSO looking for suggestions on best casinos for gambling (blackjack/craps/pai-gow) if you're looking to mix/mingle with the 20/30-something fun/party set. Trying to avoid stodgy old men and women as I get enough of that crap in tunica

Had heard:

• Mandalay Bay

• Hard Rock ?

• ????

Aware of the nearby good spots to pre-drink cheap ($1 michelob @ Casino Royale), gamble cheap (Casino Royale / Imperial Palace), and Eat Cheap (Ellis Island Steak Dinner/Victorian Room Breakfast).... but always open to hidden gems in that general vicinity if busto or just wanting to save some cash for other portions of the trip. Likely going to try to hit the Mac King show during hte day and maybe play in a cheap NL tourney or two as well.

TIA

Just me but, I've always felt at home and highly entertained just sticking to the Hard Rock....Place is small but, I can walk around that circle and see the most interesting stuff every time or just sit at a table till the sun comes up.

I've got nothing for the go-out portion. If I want to go out and drink at a dive and look at 6s and 7s I can do that in Dallas. There's no Dice within 3.5 hours of me and I have to get my fix.

I think I can help you with your other question.

Mandalay and Mirage are both perfect book/poker daytime action spots. Poker action is always high in both places, but not overrun such that a table can't be had. The books are nice and huge with lots of degenerates. You can watch the main games in the poker rooms at both places. Staying at harrah's it's a cab ride to mandalay and a decent walk to mirage, but you get to pass some of my most favorite places on earth like wild bills (RIP Barbary) and the other dives on that side of the strip.

The other thing about Mandalay is they tend to have higher table limits even during the day than Mirage. Warrants mentioning.

Cesars is a little different in that most of their seating is reserved and the non-reserved seating is awkwardly placed I find. The poker room isn't out in the main casino (this may be different now so take this FWIW) and the C Poker room was my least favorite one I've been in. (again, this situation can change fast). They won't reserve you a seat without a 10k weekly handle or a 1k a night room so don't bother asking.

HR is full of h00rs too. You can't flash 100 bucks without one trying to saddle you. It's sort of a fun game to see how long you can keep one interested without her bailing. or so I've been told.

Good info here. Thanks. By Mirage did you mean MGM? Mirage is right across from Harrahs IIRC. MGM Is a giant book way down by mandalay bay.

:wall: I get Harrah's and Bally's mixed up in my mind. The book/poker scene in MGM is horrific, and they spent $2030030501051235 bucks making it that many times worse IMO.

The crowd you are looking for will be at:Hard Rock--Think you know this place well, they have added a rock bar in there, live music sometime, and are opening a new club. Plus the center bar is always a good time. The Palms--Don't bother with the Playboy Club. Moon is a cool club, and the door won't be as tough as Rain. The bars in the casino are usually hopping, and late night, there are some real drunken LA fish in the poker room. Palms is the new hard Rock. Much better talent there. Drop JRocks name, might open a few doors easily. Planet Hollywood--This place is a bit of a sleeper to me. Young crowd, the Heart Bar (center bar) always has action in it, and I just like the whole casino (lotta pros there, be warned). Koi upstairs is some great, great food. Great place to take clients. I always have a good time there. Don't bother with Hawaiian Tropic Zone.Tao at the Venetian--Very good restaurant, with a cool bar. Always hot women there. My old roommate bartends there, can get you in the club if you are in the mood. Don't try the club solo unless you are surrounded by hotties, or getting a bottle. The area on Fremont right next to that overhead video monstrosity can be fun. There's 3 local bars down there that have a hipster vibe: Downtown Cocktail Room, The Griffin, and Beauty Bar. Not chock full o' sluts, but cool low-key bars. If you are there on days other than Thu-Fri-Sat, there are some great options. A few of the places have the local industry crowd on lockdown, like Sundays at Body English, Mondays at Jet. XS at Encore does one, i forget which day, Sun or Mon, and it is a must. Every cocktail waitress in town is there, getting plastered. Seamless is great, but Drai's still goes off. It's always cool there. We used to go there first, then hit Seamless around 6 a.m.

Along the lines of asking "does anyone know a good place to buy rice in China", does anyone know of a good liquor store near the strip? At the end of a long day of gambling I'd like to kick back and have a few brews in the room, but the options for premium beer to go on the strip are limited.

Also, if anyone has a good link to Vegas show/meal deals (coupons 2 for 1 buffets, 2 for 1 show tickets, etc) it'd be appreciated during these hard times.

this doesn't answer your question, but good to find good beer bars in Vegas:beer bar / brewpub search

My 2nd favorite beer in the world is the "black chip stout" its at the main street station casino down in old school vegas. The name of the bar in the casino is the triple 7 brewpub and the food is pretty good too.

Most of these MGM MIRAGE owned casinos are running the stay 2 nights get 3rd free or stay 3 nights get 4th free.

Mandalay looks to be the only one extending this through March at this point in time.

If you look at their calendar for the promo....Thurs March 18th and 19th are orange for the promotion, but the 20th is white for internet rate. Does anyone know if that would count towards the promo? Obviously I would confirm either way but wondered if anyone knew here.

Also, let's say I called Mandalay for the same nights...are they probably going to just pitch me these specials or could I possibly get better rates? I'd be a returning guest, but not a high roller by any means, so I'm not sure going through a host would get me anything.

Staying at the Riviera for New Years  but I can't complain too much since I'm not paying for anything.

Going during the first weekend of March Madness as well...going with a decent sized group...7-8 (half guys/half girls)...lookin forward to seeing the Paris theatre setup mentioned for the games!

Anybody have experience with using those VIP club passes you see everywhere on the internet, looking to hangout at a couple during the wknd there but don't want to waste vacation time in line or any recs for some that aren't as prime but still a good time?

Just booked 4 nights at the Wynn 12/19 through 12/23 from Toronto. Flight and Hotel $750, I am too lazy to check back through all 17 pages but can anyone tell me the best steakhouse in Vegas (price not an issue).

Also heard about getting cheap show tickets ala what the TKTS booth in NYC, any shot of scoring tickets to Love? Or will I have to bend over and pay the $200/ticket?

Finally, how is the Wynn poker room?

booked a room for one night (1/7) on Priceline at Planet Hollywood for $50. Cheapest rates on their website are $209. GB Priceline.

I've stayed there twice. Totally fine.Casino has a weird "hollow" vibe to it, but it is so close to lots of solid spots it doesn't matter much.

VIP passes are nothing. You will see guys on the street offering 'passes' at clubs. They mean nothing. Any decent club, you have to get by the doorman. Either grease him, or get a table. With a group that size, unless the chicks are smoking, and everyone is dressed to the nines, you will have to do something. It'll be tougher at the better clubs, like XS, Tao, Pure, and Tryst. Bank, LAX, and Body English will be easier, but not as good.

Steakhouses:N9ne at the Palms, Strip House at Hollywood, or Del Frisco's by the Hard Rock are my favorites. Cheap tix--Check with the hotel concierge. With the economy, discounted tickets should be easy to come by. The Love show is pretty popular, I dunno if that one will be. Can't help you with the poker room, but the one at the Wynn has a good rep.

 :goodposting: :goodposting: In my experience they will honor the passes for any hot chick, then cut all the guys off after letting the girls get by. This effectively separates us from the chicks we want to be with and makes us more willing to pay high prices to get in. So far I've been stuck with 100 to the bouncer per guy at LAX, and like 100 total for 2 of us guys at Tao. It sucks. It's a racket. You can't talk or hear anyone in the clubs anyway. But the girls like it and they are definitely hot there.

Very solid room. Lots of pros there though and the games are tough. PM Assani Fisher, he's a regular there I think. If you want a more beatable 1-2 game I like MGM by far the best. Caesars has a really nice room too that's off by itself and very quiet, but the quality of player there is considerably better.

Been to Strip, had a nice filet. Last trip I went to Botero at the Wynn:Here is the menu:

BOTERO

It is $$$$ but the filet was great. I got the 12 oz and it was perfect.

Went to Vegas again 3 weeks a go, here are some observations:

Las Vegas Hilton

Went there because I heard it was the only book in vegas that offered Parlay's for UFC. The only positive is the free drinks. It was big, didn't like the atmosphere at all. Stayed there for about 4 hours.

Botero Steak House

Located at Encore, good meal. I try to go to one $$$$ steakhouse per trip, and this one was well worth the money. I rate it ahead of Strip Steak at Planet Hollywood as my favorite steakhouse in Las Vegas so far.

Planet Hollywood

The only knock I have on Planet Hollywood is the bathrooms in the room. I am on vacation, I want to relax, I would appreciate it if the shower has just a little water pressure. Frustrating. We used to stay at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay, so maybe I am spoiled with bathrooms. Minor complaint. Rooms are a nice size, and the atmosphere is great in the casino. Once again, I had a great time in the sportsbook, watching NFL. Cool people. You can get great deals here, and it is right on the strip. My friend just told me that they are being bought by Harrah's though, so no more starwood points in the near future. WHen we landed on a Thursday, we were starving. We wanted a quick meal so went to Haiwaiin Tropic Zone. Here is a tip - Stay far far away.

Dive Casinos

On Friday we decided to just walk the strip and go to all the dive casinos. Stopped at O'Sheas, Casino Royale, and Bill's Gambling Hall. Awesome! Had a blast. Casino Royale had 3 dollar craps with 60 odds in the back! Dealers were awesome and we had a great time. O'Sheas and Bill's had 5 dollar table games, fun places to hang out and have some cheap drinks to go along with the low limit gambling. I plan on setting a day aside each time I go back to go to those fine establishments.

Mandalay Bay

Went there for College Football and the UFC fight. I was pretty ticked when I found out Mandalay Bay offers UFC parlays. Wasted trip to the Hilton, and it would be a waste of a cab ride if I won (unfortunately Tito Ortiz couldn't complete the win, so I didn't get a chance to lament the cab ride). It was a good time there. If anybody wants a good burger, the Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay is a great spot. And you have to get one of their milkshakes. Awesome. Never miss it when I head down to Mandalay. The UFC fight had a great crowd, if no one has been to a live UFC event, go! You would expect the frat boy factor to be high, but the 2 events I went to, everyone is really cool.

Anyone been to cut? I have done a few steakhouses out there and the thing I didn't like about 9 was how the lighting in there was all ####ed up. Was this odd blueish color.

What Vegas casinos offer player props during March Madness? How are they set up. Do they post them all the morning before the games or do they run game by game?

wife officially out for Vegas :goodposting: need to find something fun to do in Vegas on New Years now...

I have been to many books on the strip with no player props (or props in general). However, I went to a Thursday Night NFL game at the Hilton, and they had props for that game.

Aria just called me out of the blue to tell me they would extend the offer of 109/night and 25 in freeplay and 50 meal credit per day all the way to April for any day out to March, and same deal weekdays after March (sort of hard to explain, but hope this makes sense).

They said if you put in code ARIALV you get the same deal except 159 on weekends, but call them and they'll cut the rate.

Again, I have 0 relationship with them unless somehow the casinos are sharing info. I'm nearly 100% MGM/Mirage guy as far as player card etc.

Venetian is a nicer room with lots of action. I'd recommend this over MGM, especially if I was staying at the Wynn.
