first preseason game and no catches?

Why do they even draft players straight from college? They should send them to Canada for 2 more years and get them ready. All of these rookies are busts.......well except for Maroney who's already been inducted into the Hall of Fame.first preseason game and no catches?bust

Time to steal Eric Johnson late?Seriously, Davis is a great dynasty prospect. I just don't expect him to step on the field and be a top 5 TE his rookie year. His value may be over inflated in his rookie year.
Jason Wood and I have long disagreed over the value of Rookie TEs, but it's about time to conceed that he is indeed on the "right" side of the argument. With painfully few examples, rookie TEs are not often productive as rookies and even when they are, they are rarely consistent. Randy McMichael, Heath Miller, and Jeremy Shockey certainly did good things (and Cris Cooley arguably as well), but there are LOTS of 1st and 2nd round TEs out there who had the stars aligned as rookies to catch a lot of balls and simply never did much. I belive I said "With painfully few examples, rookie TEs are not often productive as rookies..." Below are the guys that were taken on the first day of the last few drafts. I think I covered everyone, but as you can see, with the exception of Shockey and MAYBE Miller and Cooley, there is "painfully" little to get excited about...2005 Heath Miller - 39/458 and 6Alex Smith - 41/366 and 22004 Winslow - essentially no value due to injuryBen Watson - 2/16 and 0 (injury, IIRC)Ben Troupe - 33/329 and 1Kris Wilson - 3 /33 and 0Chris Cooley - 37/314 and 6Ben Harstock - 4 / 33 and 02003 Jason WItten - 35 / 347 and 1Dallas Clark - 29 / 340 and 1LJ Smith - 27 / 321 and 1Bennie Joppru -Rookie TEs aren't productive?Have you ever seen Mike Ditka's rookie stats? In FOURTEEN games, Ditka put up these gi-normous numbers:56 catches1,076 yards (YOU READ THAT?!?!??!)12 TDsShockey almost put up 1,000 yards his rookie season also....With that said... Eric Johnson will be hurt by Week 4.
I wouldnt get to worried about VD.
I've seen this same comment in numerous threads and don't understand it....."nothing to see here" followed by a disclaimer or comment supporting the opposite side.Plenty to see and note IMO. VD will start to drop down many draft boards because of what we saw.Seriously, nothing to see here. It's a pre-season game, and the first one at that. VDavis will be fine. Overhyped for most drafters tastes, but a beast of a talent nonetheless.
BNB --I get what you're saying, and you're point is valid. My only point by saying that was that the sky isn't falling and that he may be a stud someday. Is that day 2006? Maybe; heck, I don't know. Agreed...huge difference between dynasty and redraft. The sky definately isn't falling, but I do think we got a reality wake up call last night. If you want to see something really funny, go look at the survivor drafts in the Mock Draft Forum. Rookies across the board have been steadily plummenting since January. Even the sharks around here get caught up in the hype.BNB --I get what you're saying, and you're point is valid. I'm glad I did a search before I posted because I have been thinking about this alot since the 1st preseason game. Something is not right here. Davis gets drafted as the 6th overall pick. At this position you are expected to have immediate impact, or at least start, IMO. So Davis, preseason game #2 has 1 catch for 5 yards. Nothing in game #1. I'm becoming convinced that either SF reached big time for Davis, or they are hiding him on the bench because he is the stud we all think he was before he was drafted. There was almost no news on him during training camp. What you did here were quotes like this:Alex Smith - "He's a guy that is not one-dimensional," Smith said of Davis. "He can get in there in block and help us in the run game and help us in protection. His time is going to come in the passing game. There's going to be games when we're playing a defense that's really going to allow him to take off. And he can have some big games."huh? His time is going to come... he can block and help in protection? Not a ringing endorsement.Mike Nolan - HC Mike Nolan wants to work rookie TE Vernon Davis in slowly. "My objective is to get him to the point where he can be in there," Nolan said. Again, this is NOT what I expected to hear about Davis. Instead, Delanie Walker is tearing it up and looks to be the kind of talent I had expected from Davis. How difficult could it be to run a couple plays for Davis that isolate him and let him use his physical ability to make a play. I am offically![]()
Since I got married, I don't worry about VD either...Sorry. Anyway, yeah, there are very few TEs taken in the top-10, so comparing other 1st-rounders to Davis is of limited utility. If Antonio Gates can learn to be a Pro-Bowl TE in two years playing the position, I think you have to consider it possible for Davis to transition effectively to the NFL in his first year.I wouldnt get to worried about VD. Eric Johnson never lasts more than a month and they know the talents of Vernon. He will be involved

Absolutely. Trade him to me. I'm feeling generous and I'll give you a bargain in Desmond Clark . . .first preseason game and no catches?bust
If the 49ers QB was the rookie version of Alex Smith for the next 5-10 years, then Scheffler would turn out to be the better fantasy player than VD. Even with a horrible QB, a player like Davis will get his numbers eventually (probably not this year) because he is an elite talent. Outside of VD's horrible situation, you'd have to be surprised if Scheffler turned out to be the better player, fantasy maybe, but football player, no.No, I don't believe it's time to panic. That said, I think it's foolish to disregard the preseason entirely. As long as you keep things in perspective, preseason can be a valuable tool.
Anyway, I was laughed at in one of my dynasty leagues because I ranked Davis 1A & Scheffler 1B at TE (right after the NFL draft). I said the difference in the two players is WAY closer than most people realize.
Say what you want, but the difference is even smaller now, IMO. In the end, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Scheffler turns out to be the better player. I'm not saying Scheffler will be a top-10 TE this season, but I do expect him to be an elite TE in 2 or 3 years.
