I haven't heard the Eric Johnson fluf...where is that coming from?has his stock slipped at all with eric johnson starting to make some noise? if johnson, & it's a BIG if, can stay healthy, he'll take at least 20-30 catches away from davis if they play them both.
no fluff, he's actually 100% now.I haven't heard the Eric Johnson fluf...where is that coming from?has his stock slipped at all with eric johnson starting to make some noise? if johnson, & it's a BIG if, can stay healthy, he'll take at least 20-30 catches away from davis if they play them both.
This is the same Johnson that posted 82 rec, 825 yds and 2 TDs in 2004. The Davis parade has certainly left the dock premature in you ask me.With Bryant and Johnson in the mix I think the Davis crowd seeing him as the leading Rec in SF is in for a rather large disapointment.no fluff, he's actually 100% now.I haven't heard the Eric Johnson fluf...where is that coming from?has his stock slipped at all with eric johnson starting to make some noise? if johnson, & it's a BIG if, can stay healthy, he'll take at least 20-30 catches away from davis if they play them both.
Because of their vast difference in talent, any comparison between Johnson and Davis will be considered comical within a year.![]()
Maybe you should revisit these TE rookie numbers as a refresher. Even if you see Davis as the most talented TE ever, the odds of these remarkable rookie season numbers that you continue to imply are not very good.Because of their vast difference in talent, any comparison between Johnson and Davis will be considered comical within a year.![]()
For some perspective, the Rookie season Rec/yds/TDs are now up there on the list. I don't think these numbes are doing much to help support Davis for this year.I was curious as to how other first round TE have done, and here are the other guys taken in the first round from the past 20 years:
2005 1-30 Heath Miller 39/459/6
2004 1-6 Kellen Winslow Jr N/A
2004 1-32 Ben Watson 2/16/0
2003 1-24 Dallas Clark 29/340/1
2002 1-14 Jeremy Shockey 74/894/2
2002 1-21 Dan Graham 15/150/1
2002 1-28 Jerramy Stevens 26/252/3
2001 1-31 Todd Heap 16/206/1
2000 1-14 Bubba Franks 34/363/1
2000 1-27 Anthony Becht 16/144/2
1997 1-13 Tony Gonzalez 33/368/2
1997 1-22 David LaFleur 18/122/2
1996 1-9 Rickey Dudley 48/787/7
1995 1-9 Kyle Brady 15/144/1
1995 1-27 Mark Bruener 26/238/3
1993 1-20 Irv Smith 16/180/2
1992 1-14 Derek Brown 4/31/0
1992 1-15 Johnny Mitchell 16/210/1
1990 1-21 Eric Green 34/387/7
1988 1-13 Keith Jackson 81/869/6
It looks like most of these guys became fairly productive, so the bust rate on first round TE seems on the low side.
No one is comparing their talent, just pointing out that EJ is an accomplished receiver and could take targets away from VD for now.Because of their vast difference in talent, any comparison between Johnson and Davis will be considered comical within a year.![]()
Vernon Davis was quoted as saying something along the lines "Imagine what I could do with 82 receptions". I bet he'd have a lot more than 2 measly TDs.You just can't compare the two TEs.This is the same Johnson that posted 82 rec, 825 yds and 2 TDs in 2004. The Davis parade has certainly left the dock premature in you ask me.
With Bryant and Johnson in the mix I think the Davis crowd seeing him as the leading Rec in SF is in for a rather large disapointment.
If Bryant was so good, why did Cleveland let him go? Especially with the ACL tear that Braylon Edwards suffered? So you think tha Davis will have 1000+ rec yards as a rookie? I find that highly unlikely. I can see the TDs being close, but nothing else. Bryant has prven capable of being a WR1 the last 2 years in Clev, a just as bad situation as SF.As much as I like Eric Johnson, the Niners just can't rely on him to stay healthy. Johnson doesn't have speed, he's not the best blocker, I mean he played for Yale in college. The one thing Eric Johnson has is soft hands. He's not going to be a better TE than Vernon Davis, but he's a great option in the 2 TE sets. Also, what makes you think that Bryant is so much better than Vernon Davis? I think they both finish with about the same number of receiving yards this year, but with more TDs going to Vernon Davis. No his is not. Bryant is their best WR and rec option. Hell, Johnson may even prove a better TE than him for the 1st year or so.
If Bryant was so bad then why did Clev make him their #1 WR from his 1st day there? Why did SF let Lloyd go and grab him? These questions are not even important. What is important is that Bryant managed to be a WR1 in Clev for a year and a half. He eclipsed 1000 yds last year in a situaiton that was not much if at all worse then the SF one. He is w/o a doubt far more established than Davis right now. I think far too many people are being very shortsighted in thining that Davis walks into SF as the only viable Rec threat. As a matter of fact I think he needs to prove that he can beat out at least 2 PROVEN rec threats in Bryant and Johnson to put up the kind of numbers you guys are implying. Others may even agrue that Battle enter the discusion here too. Given the history of rookie TEs, this is not a feat I expect will take place this season. If Bryant was so good, why did Cleveland let him go? Especially with the ACL tear that Braylon Edwards suffered? So you think tha Davis will have 1000+ rec yards as a rookie? I find that highly unlikely. I can see the TDs being close, but nothing else. this is exactly what i'm saying. i have the 6th pick in my dynasty draft so am watching all the davis reports closely.how many total targets do you think will go the TE's way in SF? 8 a game? 10? 12? assuming a 60% reception rate with 10 targets, that's 6 catches a game, 96 for the year(this is NOT going to happen) let's say johnson gets 30% of them. that's 58 catches for davis. and smith won't throw 60% & i doubt the TE spot will garner 10 targets a game.No one is comparing their talent, just pointing out that EJ is an accomplished receiver and could take targets away from VD for now.Because of their vast difference in talent, any comparison between Johnson and Davis will be considered comical within a year.![]()
