A majority of the posters in this thread don't understand the San Francisco offense. We're not trying to hit homeruns. We're not trying to go toe to toe with other teams in a shootout. We're playing field position. Kicking fields. Getting the occasional big play by Gore and the occasional nice play by Battle/Jackson to move the chains.
And our defense is doing the same thing. We keep everything in front of us. We have not been beaten deep a single time this year. "Big deal" right? That has been the greatest weakness in San Francisco for the past several years. Our secondary was made to look like swiss cheese, and that is the reason everyone salivated when their fantasy player matched up against us. Don't get me wrong, we are still a decent matchup, but entire teams will not blow up against us. Arizona tried to run the ball on us to victory and failed, Boldin and Fitz were shutdown. St. Louis tried to pass the ball on us to victory and failed, Steven Jackson was shutdown. Willie Parker or Big Ben? Someone is going to dissappoint on Sunday.
We are 2-0 for a reason people. We are playing smart football that plays to the strengths of our team. Our offense is still young and Vernon Davis is a very important piece of that. The guy is probably the most useful dual threat TE in the league. The guy blocks like a 6th lineman, his strength is truly incredible. Freakish. That's why he was drafted #6 overall. The guy does so many things to help the team.
Even when Davisruns routes and gets open, he has not been targeted so much because of our gameplan. Our WRs are running quick routes for 6-10 yards on the majority of passing plays to keep moving the chains. If the Niner's fall behind in any given game, I think then you will see Davis' stats begin to rise into the range of the TE1s in the league. But until then, it truly is a "move the chains" offense centered around Gore. Our passing stats and Alex Smith's stats suck because we are not passing the ball. we are like #32 in attempts. And we haven't been passing the ball down the field. Davis speed and questionable hands really does not fit that style of play. The guy wants to break out games, while we're content to play them close to the vest.
