Have you seen Alex Smith play? He is awful. Throwing for 126 yards against one of the worst secondaries in the league says it all. Outside of Gore, everyone on that offense is not worth starting. I would certainly bench Davis for a few weeks and see if Smith picks up his play.
Did you watch the game? It's not like Smith was missing wide open receivers. He was very efficient in the opportunities that he had to throw. The broken pass plays were mostly the result of either the pass rush or people not getting open. Davis' "big" catch was sort of a gimmick roll out play. It's clear Nolan wants to grind it out and win with defense at this point.
I did watch the game and throwing for 126 yards against a bad secondary is not good. The next thing you are going to say is that the Rams D is solid....
I'm not positive of the numbers off the top of my head but I think he completed 65% of his passes and had a decent QB rating (85 or so). His lack of fantasy production wasn't indicative of him "sucking", at least in real football terms. Even in some pretty conventional passing situations, they continued to run it with Gore. Now, whether or not Smith is capable of handling a bigger load, that's a different question. Maybe he looks so awful in practice that Nolan doesn't want to risk it. But either way, we have no way of knowing if Smith is any good or not until they actually let him pass the rock around. Judging by Nolan's extremely conservative tendancies, he might not get that chance this year.
Nope. He has an awful QB rating (see below) against 2 questionable D's. Let us see how he manages the Steelers-Smith's QB rating

2006 74.8 ranked 26th

2007 69.1 ranked 26th

In the end the only stat that counts is winning, but it is in spite of Smith. Much like when BALT won the SB with Dilbert-
Dilfer is a very good comparison. San Francisco's 2-0 record is deceptive. This is not a team that's playing very well right now. Put them up against Dallas or Seattle and they'd get smoked. If they're going to keep winning they'll have to find some rhythm on offense.
Seattle? Are you serious?
Seattle probably wasn't a good example. My point is that the Niners are not that good right now. So while they're 2-0, they haven't looked like an elite team by any means.
I wasn't aware there was a column in the standings for style points. They will go 11-5 and win the division.

Not as hard as you have in any 49er thread here. But I give you credit for trying harder each time, no doubt.

(Rotoworld) After catching just two passes in Week 2, Vernon Davis said that he's frustrated by his role in the offense.Impact: "There wasn't too much double-team," Davis said. "Every route I ran, I got open. Every route. I was screaming. I want the ball. I don't know what it is. I got one or two passes thrown to me. I feel like I should have had more."
He is starting to complain about his minimal role as well.
Good for him, he should.
they are 2-0, why should he?
Because they could probably be better if they utilized Davis more. I wouldn't call barely beating Arizona and St. Louis anything to write home to mama about.
those wins are absolutely something to write home to mama about considering they were both division rivals... sure, the play calling is conservative, but opening up the playbook doesn't necessarily mean significant fantasy relevance for davis... if you drafted davis before the 8th round based on the offseason hype, sorry...
The leagues I have Davis I either got him in a trade or drafted him 1.07 in last year's rookie draft. In the one initial dynasty draft this year I didn't draft him, but a team did draft him at 5.07. Now that's pretty high. I believe the average draft position for Davis in startup dynasty drafts have been somwhere in rounds 6 or 7.

TE Vernon Davis (SF) wants the ball and made a visit to HC Mike Nolan's office to ask for more looks. "We've just got to get the correct game plan," Davis said Wednesday. "Sometimes the game plan you use might not be the best one." Nolan didn't take offense to Davis' request to open up the offense. "I admired the fact that he had the courage to do it," Nolan said. "I assured him that it's a work in progress on offense, and that it will happen. He's not here to block on every down. He pointed out some plays where he was open, and I certainly couldn't deny it. We have to do a better job of finding the open guy."

Can't really blame him. He's a playmaker and he needs to get the ball more. Nolan and Hostler need to take the leash off Smith and let him throw more. 17 times in a game is not enough. Alex Smith was very accurate last game but wasn't given the chance.

His offensive line hasn't been giving him enough time to have a chance.

I do agree with you but I was referring to the play-calling.

A majority of the posters in this thread don't understand the San Francisco offense. We're not trying to hit homeruns. We're not trying to go toe to toe with other teams in a shootout. We're playing field position. Kicking fields. Getting the occasional big play by Gore and the occasional nice play by Battle/Jackson to move the chains.

And our defense is doing the same thing. We keep everything in front of us. We have not been beaten deep a single time this year. "Big deal" right? That has been the greatest weakness in San Francisco for the past several years. Our secondary was made to look like swiss cheese, and that is the reason everyone salivated when their fantasy player matched up against us. Don't get me wrong, we are still a decent matchup, but entire teams will not blow up against us. Arizona tried to run the ball on us to victory and failed, Boldin and Fitz were shutdown. St. Louis tried to pass the ball on us to victory and failed, Steven Jackson was shutdown. Willie Parker or Big Ben? Someone is going to dissappoint on Sunday.

We are 2-0 for a reason people. We are playing smart football that plays to the strengths of our team. Our offense is still young and Vernon Davis is a very important piece of that. The guy is probably the most useful dual threat TE in the league. The guy blocks like a 6th lineman, his strength is truly incredible. Freakish. That's why he was drafted #6 overall. The guy does so many things to help the team.

Even when Davisruns routes and gets open, he has not been targeted so much because of our gameplan. Our WRs are running quick routes for 6-10 yards on the majority of passing plays to keep moving the chains. If the Niner's fall behind in any given game, I think then you will see Davis' stats begin to rise into the range of the TE1s in the league. But until then, it truly is a "move the chains" offense centered around Gore. Our passing stats and Alex Smith's stats suck because we are not passing the ball. we are like #32 in attempts. And we haven't been passing the ball down the field. Davis speed and questionable hands really does not fit that style of play. The guy wants to break out games, while we're content to play them close to the vest.

The 49ers can play "safe/smart" football all they want but if they want to make the playoffs and win Super Bowls Alex Smith needs to develop as a passer. The only way he does this is by passing the ball and opening up the offense. The conservative play calling can work against the likes of Arizona and the Rams, however this will not beat teams like the Steelers, Patriots, Cowboys (just to name a few). Its not the the 49er D is Chicago or Raven "like".

Those of you who say Alex Smith sucks have not watched the games very closely.

He has had little time in the pocket and receivers aren't getting open.

When he's had time, and when receivers have been open (seldom on both counts), he has delivered balls on time and on target.

He has actually thrown some incredible passes into extremely tight coverage.

During all the hoopla surrounding the Niners offseason moves at WR,

I was actually pretty bummed when I heard that the Pats scored Moss, Stallworth AND Welker,

while we settled for Alligator Jackson (ever wonder what would make SEA trade their "ace" WR to a division foe?) and Ashlie Simpson. Can only hope that Jason Hill pans out, but given the Niners' recent history in drafting WR's, I'm not holding out much hope:

Brandon Williams

Rasheed Marshall

Marcus Maxwell

Rashaun Woods

Derrick Hamilton

Brandon Lloyd

Arnaz Battle

Cedrick Wilson

Tai Streets

Ryan Thelwell

TO (1996)

Iheanyi Uwaezuoke

J.J. Stokes

Cory Fleming

Tony Hargain

Ron Lewis

Michael Barber

Calvin Nicholas

John Taylor (1986)

Jerry Rice (1985)

Given all of this, I think SF definitely needs to get VD more involved in the offense.

In the few instances he's gotten the ball, he has done some amazing stuff.

<_<

And this is helping me as a VD owner how?

Interesting! Thanks.

Any word on his injury? He looked good this week!
Any time they say "knee sprain" it sounds like multiple weeks, but I haven't heard a peep since the game yesterday, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's no big deal.He did look better, and he could have had a really nice day if he had caught one of his two targets in the endzone or held on to the pass where he was hurt.

Yeah, especially that third-down drop. (Or two, if you count the should-have-been-interception).
The one that should have been intercepted was clearly a catch. But thats besides the point. Did Vernon Davis do something to you? Because you sure do waste a lot of time  when it comes to Davis.

He didn't look like he was in pain on the sidelines late in that game...he was smiling. I think they may have just kept him out because the game was out of hand. Just my

fixed...

The offense sucks, the QB sucks, and Davis can't catch. Great combo.
He can catch just fine. He caught in college just fine.Where is this "he can't catch" stuff coming from????????
Watching all of his drops.
He must have had A lot of balls thrown his way to lead the ACC in receptions if he can't catch.
He didn't lead the ACC in receptions; he had 51 receptions his junior (last) year, behind such notables as Chansi Stuckey and Deyon Williams. He also didn't lead in yardage or TDs. I don't know where people keep making up these stats.
Vernon Davis was that workout warrior of the draft and his stock shot up. From what I read he had average hands that went with his speed and build. He also did not have good route running skills coming out. As my friend states just because a guy can run fast and lift a lot weights in his underwear does not make him a top flight prospect.

He had a couple drops but for the most part looked like he will be Smith's go to WR. Considering that none of the other WR could hang on to the ball either, I doubt that will hurt his targets going forward.

Yeah I saw that too and didn't think it seemed very serious at the time, but then I read the phrases "knee sprain" and "MRI on Monday" and get more concerned. I still prefer your version. We should know something by later today.

TE Vernon Davis (SF) will probably be sidelined for the next two games after suffering a sprained ligament in his right knee during yesterday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The injury didn't keep Davis from staying late at the team headquarters after returning home yesterday. "If we lose a game, I'll come in here and see the things that went wrong," said Davis. "I'll critique myself a little bit, especially. I'm in no rush to get home."
:blackdot: This is the kind of guy I would want on my team.

Gore does the samething, but I believe he stays after games they have won as well.
