Very Noobish Question About Terminology (1 Viewer)

How's everyone doing? This is my first year in IDP without a crutch giving me advice on who to pick and I have a question regarding terminology. When I read "Team X has given up the 27th most fantasy points to safety's this season." What actually is it telling me? I read it as out of 32 team five teams gave up more points to safety's. However, I'm struggling with the fact that in reality it means 26 teams gave up more points than them.

I'm wondering this because I'm trying to decide if in the Linebacker department if Sean Lee should start since San Francisco has given up the 27th most fantasy points to Linebackers this season or do I start Clay Matthews since Carolina has given up the 6th most fantasy points to Linebackers this season.

I know this is common sense but for some reason it's confusing me.

Thanks all!

Well it's only been one week so those statistics can be pretty biased. Seattle had a rookie MLB starting the game and has a very strong run-stopper safety with Kam Chancellor, so most tackles against SF in week1 didn't came from LBs. The Detroit-Tampa game was also a game that produced stats that will change a lot during the season, Detroit won't always be 20 points ahead during all the games etc.

With a limited pass offense and a RB like Gore who gets through the DL a lot, you should expect good tackling numbers from LBs against SF during the season, imo.

The Clay MAtthews vs Sean Lee thing is also very dependent of your scoring, but Lee is the way to go in tackle heavy leagues or balanced scoring.

Thanks Tonato, I figured it was still too early in the season for that assumption.

My league info:

Defensive Value

Tackle Solo 1.5

Tackle Assist .75

Sack 5

Interception 6

Fumble Force 3

Fumble Recovery 6

Defensive Touchdown 6

Safety 2

Pass Defended 3

Block Kick 5

Tackles for Loss .5

Turnover Return Yards 10 yrds per pnt

As a rule of thumb, I generally want to see about 4 games before I begin to trust any rankings like that. Obviously there are some exceptions and you can spot trends before that in some cases.

Good post on the 4 week rule I agree. The main thing to watch is matchups and pick free safeties against the pass strong safeties against the run mlb against the run and olb against the past dline can go both ways if the team has top olb pass rushing like green bay or San Diego I like there interior lineman for sacks because it makes the qb step in the pocket to avoid them. You will notice the matchups as the weeks go on you'll see big numbers from guys you never heard of for 2 weeks then there gone. So keep your eye on 4 or 5 guys and if there doing good by week 3 or 4 pull the trigger consistency wins championships!
