Percy Harvin-WR-Vikings Aug. 13 - 11:34 am et

The Vikings have sent a "five-day letter" to Percy Harvin as a warning to rejoin the team, according to a report from Profootballtalk.com.

The letter means Harvin has five days to report to the team or risk suspension and/or fines. Harvin has been dealing with migraines, but there's also been speculation that he and Sidney Rice are purposely avoiding the rigors of camp as long as Brett Favre stays away. At the very least, Harvin can report to team headquarters and let the Vikes' medical staff contribute to the management of his migraines.

My take: Look, as great as Brett Favre has been for the NFL, he doesn't have any more 'equity' with the Vikings than say, Adrian Peterson or Sidney Rice, not even Percy Harvin. Favre has only been their 1 year! This bit of news, if 100% true, rubs me the wrong way in that they are allowing Favre all the time he needs, supposedly even upping his salary for which he was already under contract, to deal with his offseason maladies whereas Percy is being threatened with fines for not reporting as he deals with his physical condition.

Wow! Talk about starting off on the wrong foot and not building team harmony. This is the bed they made, so now they will have to sleep in it. Rocky times could be in store here, I'm just sayin'...... :pics:

I simply don't believe that things will end great for Favre if he comes back this season. That ankle and aged body are not a good mix for playing NFL football. NFL teams will take their cue from the Saints last season and look for the KO on good 'ol Brett Favre this season. No sympathy from the Bears, Packers, and other contenders like the Cowboys, Giants, and Saints.

Bolded is the most important point IMO. I said it before in the Harvin thread, but if he really does have debilitating headaches, why are the Vikings not demanding he sees several specialist or at least come receive treatments in a state of the art medical facility instead of just letting him stay at home.

What on earth has Harvin done to deserve a new contract?

Players need to be at camp, end of story.

They make millions of dollars, they can show up for work.

Word on the street is that the 5-day letter was issued simply so that they could get a roster exemption to add a player to the roster for the preseason game this weekend.

Not that Harvin's absence is insignificant, but I believe the issuance of a 5-day letter is.

Harvin placed on "left squad" list

Judd Zulgad

Minneapolis Star & Tribune

Vikings coach Brad Childress has said repeatedly that he does not know when wide receiver Percy Harvin will rejoin the team. However, a move made by the Vikings makes it appear as if Harvin's absence might not end any time soon.

The team received a roster exemption for Harvin on Thursday, with the designation of left squad, according to an NFL source.

Harvin has been away from the Vikings since his grandmother passed in late July. The Vikings have said that Harvin is now at home in the Twin Cities but has been dealing with another round of migraine headaches.

Harvin had migraine headaches on several occasions last season and even missed one game. However, none of his migraines lasted long enough to keep him away from the team for the amount of time he has been missing in recent weeks.

Harvin's agent, Joel Segal, has declined to comment on the situation, saying the Vikings are handling the situation.

It's not clear yet what move the Vikings will make now that they have the roster exemption for Harvin.

As stated earlier the letter was sent so the Vikings can get the roster exemption

I'm not sure what he would gain by that. All they can do is give him the same drugs that he is currently taking. I think they run a bigger risk of him getting into a car accident should he get a migraine while driving to the practice facility.

I opinioned in the "Harvin" hype thread last year that this type of thing was inevitable with a guy like Harvin who was either late or missed his first ever practice as a pro and possibly late to the first training camp practice last year. This guy will never change, if as a rookie you cannot even make it to your first practices, it entirely shows who you are. A lot like the idiotic choices Dez Bryant makes --these guys don't become choir boys once handed a few million dollars; in fact, usually they get worse.

I predict a very rocky career for Harvin, just like I did last year.

Favre has many years in the NFL and is at the tail end of his career. Are you saying he needs just as much time in camp as the young Harvin? I'm not even sure what this "equity" is you are talking about. The other players has just as much invested in the team as he does, or maybe he has less? Do you really think "equity" is that drives Brett Favre to go out there and try to win. His reasons for wanting to compete are far more self serving, but that doesn't diminish the guy's desire to compete and win.
This bit of news, if 100% true, rubs me the wrong way in that they are allowing Favre all the time he needs, supposedly even upping his salary for which he was already under contract, to deal with his offseason maladies whereas Percy is being threatened with fines for not reporting as he deals with his physical condition.
So you think that Harvin has as much physically wrong with him as Brett Favre? Even if you think that's the case, who needs more time practicing to be a great player, Harvin or first ballot HOFer Brett Favre? And migraines? Seems like a pretty convenient injury, doesn't it? And I love all the people that are upset that Favre is going to get more money. Like if youg got offered two new jobs at the same time and both sides upped the ante to get you, you would forgo taking the extra cash and pick the best fit no matter what. Please...

The team chemistry sucked last year in TC too. Remember the word "schizm" being thrown around by everyone? Probably not because the attention span of the SP is usually right around 10 months. The "schizm" disappeared as soon as they started winning games. That being said, if Favre goes down in the third game and hangs them up, there will be all kinds of finger pointing and schizms.

How is that different than any other year, team, or player? Do you think people don't with they could take Peyton's head off? It's the nature of the game. Everyone is going to try like hell to kill Favre. This point couldn't be anymore moot...

Some people get relief with chiroprator treatments, dental work, basic cervical and scapular stabilizer strengthening. Something to show the team you are working on try to resolve the issue, not use it as an excuse to miss practice.I'm sure there is someone in the organization low enough (intern managers/athletic trainers) to be the pickup guy driving injured players to and from the practice facility, doctor's appointments etc.

I read at some point that he went to the Mayo Clinic last year, so he has gone to specialists in the past. Unless you are Harvin's doctor, I'm not sure how you would know the treatment that he is seeking currently.

Then why didn't the Vikings push for Favre to have his surgery sooner once the season ended? He was under contract, right? The other guys are men, too, who put it all on the line just as much as Favre. Hell, it is the supporting cast that made Favre' job a lot easier last season. Again, what I'm stressing is that the Vikes have put themselves in a position to be looked at as hypocrites. Guys like Harvin, Rice, and Peterson will still be around, and far more valuable long-term for them, after Brett Favre is long gone. It's now or never for Brett Favre, his body is on it's last legs......literally.

This double-standard is dangerous precedent to set in team sports. If I was Peterson, Harvin, Rice, or any other vet on that offense, I'd start to make some noise about this too. Do you recall how Kobe Bryant reacted towards Shaq when he thought Shaq should have had surgery on his hand a lot sooner (as he ended up missing the first month+ of the season) or he wasn't conditioning himself properly in the offseasons. This guy (Kobe) seethed over this, and demanded more. If team leaders (and stars, in their own right) see a pattern of inequity in treatment, given their value to the team, then I'd think that they would be well within their right to speak up and/or show their displeasure with the situation.

I think more of it is on how the Vikings are handling it...but yes, there is some of that.Only problem...I may be the first Packer fan to post in here, will some still blame all the bashing on Packer fans?Because I won't bash Favre for this...this is on the Vikings...they made it known they don't mind Favre not attending. What player is going to show up when they are told they don't have to...especially while rehabbing an ankle injury.

It's different because he (Favre) is a year older and a year slower. When vulnerability increases, the NFL has no love for the situation. Witness Aikman, Steve Young, Tarkenton, and others getting hammered on their way out because they had become vulnerable. This ankle injury will make Favre very vulnerable this year. Those expecting the magic of last year to repeat itself are being set up for disappointment. Each year brings a different set of conditions. Cohesion, chemistry, whatever you want to call it, makes a big difference in sports. Momentum is powerful stuff!

It's not like the Bears, Packers, and Lions have all been sitting around in awe of the Vikings (and Favre) all offseason. These teams went out and got better. Did the Vikings?

You should be able to point out that having a completely different set of rules for one player sets a terrible precendent, is detrimental to team unity and discipline, and is simply no way to run a team without that happening, but you can't. Favre is the blackhole of FF topics - a mere mention of his name sucks all other topics into an unending chasm of Fav-ruh.

I occasionally suffer from migraine headaches - the can't-stand-any-noise-light-or-movement-or-I-get-nauseous-and-throw-up-violently kind of migraines - and I can attest that for me, when I am afflicted with one of those, driving is literally a physical impossibility, and riding in a cab/bus/other car would be very sickening (bordering on torturous). If the Vikings want their staff to treat Harvin, then they should send the staffer to him, IMO.

My wife gets botox treatments for migraines. We pay out of pocket. It helps a lot.
Are you being serious? I get SERIOUS migraines a lot, had MRIs done, the works, on several medications but still get them. How do they administer the botox and how does it help?

Yes, I'm serious. She's been doing it for a few years, and it has provided noticeable relief. She also has prescription Imitrex, as she only gets the injections every few months. Check this out: Botox for Migraines. Each treatment costs us about $350 out of pocket.

This isn't about Favre, it's about double-standards. Now the reasoning behind why the Vikings sent Percy the 5-day letter is unknown. Butif they sent him a letter demanding that he report ASAP or get fined as intimated, then they ought to do the same for Favre or any other player. Instead, they kiss his a*% and offer him more $$.Can you see Bill Belichick making special allocations for any of his players, including Brady? Hell, AJ Smith is certainly drawing a line in the sand and it applies to ALL. Remember that football is one of true team sports. Those 50+ other guys in the locker room contribute a whole lot to the success of the Vikings as well, some to varying degrees, but they put their bodies on the line, too. I'd be pissed if I was on that team. Nobody loves training camp.Trust me, I'm not peeved at this as I don't play for them, I'm just sympathetic to the perspective of guys like Harvin and/or Rice if they aren't too happy about the situation. Carry on....

It's not like the Bears, Packers, and Lions have all been sitting around in awe of the Vikings (and Favre) all offseason. These teams went out and got better. Did the Vikings?
So Favre is old and slow this year but last year he wasn't? Thanks for that. So Favre also lost his pocket presence? Or his toughness? The poster above is right. This is just a Favre bashing thread disguised at ripping the organization. The fact is that vets get to get away with more stuff than young guys. Get over and you will live a happier life. Or dwell in it and keep letting Brett Favre bug the crap out of you...
Carry on....
well, I do agree that if Harvin & Rice are doing this to Illustrate that the team is being unfair in allowing Farve so much leeway, that is one thing.... but as young professionals this could potentially hinder their career. Perhaps not so much for Rice who has proven himself to a degree with his breakout last season.... but Harvin has not established himself as a pro yet, and if he continues to do this he may find he has been traded or that someone has jumped him on the depth chart by the time he returns.I"m not sure that the vikes would have the guts to use Farve as the example.... My good buddy is a diehard Vikes fan and I suggested to him that the Vikes should open the vault & send a 2nd to philly to get McNabb. He said I was nuts. well, now I am thinking that may have been the best advice.

That being said, if Favre goes down in the third game and hangs them up, there will be all kinds of finger pointing and schizms.
That's apropos to mention the schism comments from last year... now here they are all coming true, just a year later. Favre's antics last year laid the groundwork for what we are seeing now.Wait until Favre sees the writing on the wall with Rice's injury and Harvin's attitude and/or migraine problems and decides to finally really retire. And fittingly leaves his final team twisting in the wind like his previous 2.And yes, if Harvin really is suffering from migraines, I do think that's a more debilitating injury than Favre's ankle.
