Via Twitter: Vikings trying to make big move (1 Viewer)

IS there anything this franchise does that DOESN'T reek of desperation?
There are no indications that the head coach is about to be fired. Now that would be change we could all believe in.
quote from ADP, following the game:
“I’ll do whatever it takes,” he answered. “Whatever it takes to help this team win. I don’t know if Coach [brad Childress] heard me, but I remember walking by in the second half on the sideline saying, ‘Hey, give it to me. Feed me.’ I don’t know if he really heard me. But there’s a lot to learn from this game.”
Any loss leaves a bad taste in your mouth but comments like Peterson's are especially bitter. It's losses like this that cause coaches to lose the locker room and, ultimately, their jobs...
Most important post in this thread by far.

I just think it's an overreaction to one subpar game where the QB has hardly had any time to get himself in game shape and develop a rapport with his receivers. Vjax's demands have thus far been enough to scare off the Rams and the Raiders who have far worse situations at WR. Heck, look at the Bears. Their receivers SUCK compared to the Vikes. I know this because the best receiver we've had in 8 years is your WR3.
Yah, but they're in a very different place in the franchise ups and downs that the Vikings are. If the compensation that SD wants is outrageous (which is what I would take "selling the farm" to mean), then that's one consideration. But if the obstacle is that VJax wants his $$ to show up, most franchises are in the sweet spot to be legitimate SB contenders once or twice a decade (if that). I'd imagine that if the Vikings believed that VJax was really the difference maker between SB or not, his salary would be more than covered by extra marginal revenue.

Since we're talking realistically, would they need to wait to trade for him until SD plays so he would have served one of his three guaranteed games suspended, and be able to roll for the Vikes week 4? Any chance of a ruling on the extra three games by next week?

This just still seems knee-jerk. If it wasn't they would have done this when Rice had surgery, right?

Ruling on Vincent Jackson suspension likely next week

Friday, September 10, 2010 - 3:33pm

Yahoo Sports -

The NFL and NFL Players Association will have an arbitration hearing next Thursday to argue over whether wide receiver Vincent Jackson Vincent Jackson Fantasy News(notes) is subject to being kept on a three-game roster exemption list even if he is traded by the San Diego Chargers to another team. The ruling is expected to have a significant impact on whether Jackson gets traded.

Jackson, who is hoping for a long-term deal after refusing to sign a one-year tender as a restricted free agent with San Diego, has been suspended for the first three games of the season for violating the substance abuse policy. If and when he returns to the Chargers, he then would miss three games because the Chargers placed him on the roster exempt list.

However, the NFLPA has argued that the roster exempt status only applies if Jackson remains with the Chargers. The union believes that any team acquiring Jackson in trade would not have to have him sit an additional three weeks.

Townley’s ruling will have an impact on whether some teams may be interested in trading for Jackson. So far, three teams have received permission from San Diego to speak with Jackson’s agents, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod, about a possible contract with Jackson.

Why are you always acting like a d-bag?
I don't have a dog in this fight, but this seems oddly hyporcritical from someone named "NoCheese" whose avatar is a Green Bay Packers helmet with a circle and a line through it.
:lmao:
Yes, it's the very definition of hypocrisy. Or perhaps it's because I live in Wisconsin but cheer for the Vikings. But you make the call ;-)

I'm very pleased with the Wilfs since they took over the Vikings. They've shown they're willing to go out and make moves to make this team better. Up to this point I would say none of their moves have been acts of desperation, and they were successful in making it to the NFC title game last year.If they did trade for Jackson now because of the one bad game, I would consider that a knee-jerk reaction. But that doesn't necessarily make it the wrong move.Since Jackson's suspended three weeks, anyway, I wonder if the Vikings could wait until after their third game before making a trade. Then they would have a better idea of how their team and WRs stack up.

Are those not "moves" that the team has made? They're personnel decisions, just like trades and free agents. And I missed your explanation on how idiotic it was to bring in Favre last year.
Here you go.Aug 17 2010, 01:18 PM

Sure, this is an off-the-cuff wild-hair prediction, but anyone who was on the Denver-Bengals thread knows my awesome powers of psychic prognostication (joke)

But I do think that things can't continue as they are without that team suffering mightily.

People will be quick to point out that all this drama didn't keep them out of the NFC Championship game last year. But this year and last year are different, simply because there was a last year.

Last year was courtship, engagement, and the honeymoon. It was all upside, all enthusiasm, all relief at having the yoke of Tarvaris Jackson's complete ineffectiveness lifted from the team's shoulders.

This year is the marriage, and as anyone who is married knows, those are two different worlds.

When you listen to Viking players talk about this you can see it in their eyes and hear it in their voices. JA started off light-hearted about it, but as the weeks progressed and still no Favre, you could see it bothering him more and more.

A team needs a leader just like a kid needs a father. That Father figure is supposed to be Childress, but by pursuing Favre how he has he can no longer be that figure for this team. His authority is gone, and the Harvin ordeal is a great example.

Since Childress isn't the leader the old grizzled Favre is, and why not, elder statesman in the league, HOFer, record holder. But he's AWOL. He's the football equivalent of a weekend dad: there some times, not there others. And no one who is there that could be a leader for this team (AP, JA) wants to take charge because weekend Dad could show up any time.

This is the second offseason in a row Childress has allowed one player to disrupt their entire camp. He even sent three players down there to essentially beg. Not only is that demeaning to them, it sends a strong message to the team: Practice doesn't matter, camp doesn't matter, your progress doesn't matter. All that matters is getting #4 under center.

I am placing my chips down that no team can undergo that complete lack of leadership, open double standards, and general lack of discipline and direction and put together back-to-back deep playoff runs. With or without Favre, the Vikes finish 8-8 or thereabouts, Favre retires (again) without winning a Superbowl away from the Pack, and Childress gets deservedly fired at the end of the season. Management should be on the street to for allowing this situation to continue.

/Rant.
Wait, now they're different? Because you said EVERY move they've made in the last TWO YEARS has been idiotic. So among those moves would be signing Favre prior to 2009 season, one in which the aforementioned player turned in perhaps the best season of his Hall of Fame career and led the team to overtime in the conference title game. I'm just not seeing how that move was idiotic. But you said it. So I'll hang up and listen.

People are getting their panties in a bunch because of one game. Small samples aren't necessarily projectable.

Sidney Rice last year:

Game 1: 2 receptions, 17 yards.

Game 2: 3 receptions, 29 yards (against the Lions, no less!)

The guy's no good. Ship him to the practice squad. The Vikings should have traded for a good receiver.

from Tom Pelissero Twitter

Asked if the #Vikings need another WR, Childress said he's "not thinking that way right now." Expect to see more and more Camarillo.
Yes...and "the door is closed" and a number of other things Childress has said to the media prior to things changing quickly the opposite way.I don't think its desperation...its smart. They know they have a short window...Jackson is a very talented guy and they have an uncertain future (this year anyway) of Sidney Rice.
Always appreciate Sho's comments. What I wonder about is that unless they can get affirmation from the league that he will be available to play week 4 and not week 7, is it worth it? By week 7 the Vikings could be out of it.
I don't think so--mathematically speaking of course, but also at that point if they've got both on board that offense could be unstoppable.

Why are you always acting like a d-bag?
You need to learn to read posts about your team that aren't necessarily in favor of them. And not to hurl personal insults when you do. Sorry, but I happen to think that every move this team has made in the past two years is not only idiotic but a slap in the face to the game. I don't like the Vikings, never have, never will.If you can't take people bad-mouthing your team without calling people d-bags you shouldn't be here. I'm sorry but I think having one subpar game when your starting QB has hardly spent any time with the team, and then immediately selling the farm to sign a big receiver doesn't make any sense and reeks of desperation and lack of internal fortitude. Another piece of evidence that this team has sold its soul to win and why they ultimately won't.
I agree. I read the posts. I agree w/ many and yes, some moves are made out of desperation since the window of opportunity is shrinking. But incendiary remarks like the one you made are unnecessary. You want me to be objective, yet you say "every move this team has made in the past two years is not only idiotic but a slap in the face to the game". Huh? A slap in the face to the game? Most on this board are able to recognize good moves from bad moves. You think they're all bad....because it's the Vikings, and you hate them. I'll admit I'm not a Childress fan, and the Favre drama is really annoying. You're entitled to your opinion, but please don't suggest you're the objective one and I'm a homer.

It's pretty clear that the Vikings current WR core aren't up to the job.
You make this judgment after one game? Isn't it pretty obvious the Saints WR's aren't up to the job either since they only scored 14? Honestly I think Harvin, Cam, Berrian, Shiancoe, and AP are more than enough to get the job done many weeks. That's a lot more talent than a lot of other teams out there have. Why bring a malcontent like VJ in and give him a boatload of money?

All I can determine from this thread is......I'm glad I don't root for the Vikings and I"m glad I don't own their offensive players in fantasy. This doesn''t look good IMO....too many questions

And sidney rice is a free agent next year
This. They must decide who they would rather have. A guy that will miss at least the first 6 weeks of the season because of injury or a guy that could miss between 3 and 6 weeks because of a of a suspension and the roster exempt list. Either way, both will need contracts or walk at the end of the year. My money says Rice will be with the team next year. AAlthough his likely that each could be signed...but doubtful.

I do not think that the Vikes lack receiving talent, they lack competent coaches. The Saints make a halftime adjustment regarding covering Shiancoe, and Childress has no answer. Coaching like that will see the Vikes miss the play-offs and Childress end up being a former HC.

Frankly, I think the Vikings have enough receiving options, generally speaking. But I will say that Brett Favre needs a beast possession guy like Rice to turn to, or he's going to be average. They need someone, VJax, Rice, or they won't be there in January. Without Rice, I don't think they are a 10 win team, imo. 8-8, 9-7. They are going to need 10, 11 wins to get into the dance.. not doing it without a big target on the outside.

Nice to think that Rice is the answer but the secondary needs work, the o-line needs to run block better, and maybe Favre won't play like my grandfather. The Vikings are over-rated. The new NFL allows you a very limited window of Super Bowl success, counting on a soon to be 41 year old QB doesn't equate to NFL immortality.

I happen to think that every move this team has made in the past two years is not only idiotic but a slap in the face to the game.
So not only do the Vikings offend Bears fan Clifford, but they offend the ENTIRE GAME OF FOOTBALL. Can you email Goddell and have him shut down that franchise? It's for the best.

Weren't the Bears the franchise that had Jim "Mullet" McMahon and something named William "The Refrigerator" Perry dancing around like fools in sunglasses singing "The Super Bowl Shuffle?" And the VIKINGS need to be contracted and disbanded?!

Although this thread has gone another direction, I think people greatly underestimate how good the Saints secondary is when healthy. Porter/Greer are a top 3 CB duo in the league, and while Sharper is opportunistic and very intelligent, Jenkins is twice the athlete and could very well be an immediate upgrade. No need for the Vikings or fantasy owners to panic.
I agree here. Please give the Saint some credit on this one. The Vikings will be just fine and do not need the services of Vincent Jackson..

Doesn't matter. No Vikings WR will have the same year that Sidney Rice had last year, small sample size be damned.

Won't Rice be a restricted free agent next year?

Wouldn't most agree that the Vikings are the best they've been since Tarkenton played? They must be doing something right.
this the best vikings team and one of hte best nfl teams oat. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/min/1998.htm
I guess my point is that they have put together a very good team. That was a great team but hard to say best of all time type team when they lost to a team that went on to get beat easily in the Super Bowl. I did love that team, and it was one of the most fun teams to watch on offense because they were so explosive.

FWIW, from the same source as the OP:

@Lakeshow73: Vikings will be silent on Vincent Jackson possibilities until league rules on suspension. My source is dead on, others tell me.

agree that they have built a very good team. all time great team is semantics. they had elite oat pd and did pretty good in the wl department. even if you penalize them heavily for not getting it done when it counts, one could easily argue they are the 2nd best non super bowl winning team oat (behind the 07 pats ofc)

The Vikings were playing the defending superbowl champions, on the road, and played them close to the very end. Is it really time to jump off the cliff?

1 minutes ago - Although no receiver had more than one reception against the Saints, coach Brad Childress said the Vikings are not looking to add a WR through trade or free agency. Vikings RapidReportsTags: WR

Cause we all know coaches never lie.
Or think it's a good idea to say, "hell yeah we are going after WRs because ours are no good."

Profootballtalk.com passes along buzz that the Vikings are interested in trading for Vincent Jackson if an arbitrator keeps his suspension at three games next week.

PFT doesn't cite a specific source, but they're satisfied after "doing some digging" that a local Minneapolis report saying "the Vikings are making a play for Jackson" has legs. An unnamed team worked out a one-year agreement with Jackson last Saturday only to have it shot down by the Chargers. That team is believed to be the Vikes. On a one-year deal, V-Jax makes all the sense in the world for Minnesota.

Source: Profootballtalk on NBCSports.com

Why would Rice and even VJax want to sign on with the Vikes after this season knowing that Favre wont be here and TJax will be trying to throw the rock? Childress is responsible for keeping TJax around and not having a viable backup to Favre -

In regards to the NO game - If the passing game wasnt clicking why didnt Childress give AP more than 19 carries? AP should have had 25-30 rushes/touches - again Childress is inept and cant see the obvious.....

H.Lake talking about this on KFAN right now. Said he received info from a credible source not affiliated with the Vikings, and restated that something is in the works with VJax, but feasibility of any trade hinges on the Thursday ruling on 3 vs. 6 game suspension.

What is the likelihood that the NFL would allow his suspensions to run concurrently? Seems like a big break.
The NFL wants the Vikings to do well so I expect them to rule in VJax's favor.
The NFL is the opposition in this matter. If the NFL was on VJax's side there would be no dispute.
And I also disagree that the NFL wishes to see the Vikings "do well," if there was bias in place they wouldn't be going after the Williams Wall the way they have. I would actually see them rule against Jackson in order to stick it to the Vikings for the Williams' situation as being more likely than the NFL looking to give a team a break.
