Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (11 Viewers)

I finally started the Mass Effect series on the PS3 are my sons urging. They both played the series and loved it. In fact, my older son said it may have been his all time favorite. I can't play the original since it was never released for PS3, so I am starting with ME2. So far, I feel like the game should be called Mass Cutscene, or Mass Dialog. I feel like I'm watching a movie rather than playing a game. I have to assume it's because I'm just starting out and this will slow down as the game progresses? Because so far, all the cut scenes and dialog are really dragging the game down for me. I'm only to the point where I just got my ship, so I know it's very early, maybe an hour or less in to it. But I don't see me finishing the game if the whole thing is like this.

It just seems like the perfect parent/kid game. Exploring together, creative building, etc.I put it on peaceful and let my 6 yr old explore. She's not used to the FPS like comtrols yet but she loves it.
I play with my sons on the Xbox, so it isnt the full game yet, but we have a couple of worlds that we have spent a few months building up. If you guys ever want to play, let me know.

Can any of you aficionados tell me if NCAA 13 is any good?I had NCAA 11 and liked it a lot. Then I went with Madden 12 last year and absolutely hated it. I thought it was the worst football game I'd ever played. The menus were counterintuitive, annoying, and the game itself was ridiculous with the way CBs and LBS could leap 10 feet in the air to bat down passes. Did they tweak the game A LOT this year, or is just as bad?
If you liked NCAA 11 a lot you will love NCAA 13.The new passing system is fantastic. YOu have 20 different trajectories, no more super LB, or physic DB's. When you first snap the ball all your recievers icons are grey..when you see them light u you know they are looking for the ball. I am making passes I never could before on any EA football game. The new recruiting is addicting. You can also scout your recruits and unlock their ratings. Revel if they are gems or busts. It's really immersive and a super deep dynasty mode.BTW I demo'd Madden 13 and although the new physics engine is raw on the demo it is a huge improvement and truly feels like a new game. I read the retail version is much better and tuned as the demo was a 3 month old build. The new commentary team of Simms and Nantz is light years from what we have had ever in Madden and the new Connected Careers franchise mode looks super deep, immersive and alive finally.I highly recommend both EA football games this year.I agree about Madden 12. At first I really liked it......then all the BS of this engine this gen reared it's ugly head with pinball tackling, and a horrid bland passing system. All of that has finally changed with the new passing system. It is night and day.As for myself here are the games I am currently playingMLB The Show 12 (1984 KC Royals season replay 2012 New York Yankees franchise, 2012 Miami Marlins franchise, 1996 Yankees season replay)MLB The Show 11 (1987 New York Yankees season replay)NCAA 13 - Miami Hurricanes Year 2God of War IIISkyrimNever played God of War III and picked it up dirt cheap. I freaking love it.

This is one of, if not the only, post I've seen on the Internet stating that NCAA 13 is good.

What I don't get is.....it is better tuned version of NCAA 11 with a much better passing system, and recruiting system. I could care less what anyone else thinks. I am having a blast playing the game. Is it ultra realistic football? No and EA football has never been ultra realistic. I felt NCAA 2009 and 2010 were pure garbage. But NCAA 11 was a major jump, 12 was a slight step back and 13 refined everything. At this stage of he development cycle......we are at the fine tuning stage of these games. The engine is being pushed to it's limit.

Does it keep track of stats over multiple years in ONLINE FRANCHISES. Are the games now 107-95 like they used to be? Please keep in mind that myself and a few buddies play these online franchises on ALL-MADDEN and we regularly put up 7-8k passing yards and 60-100 TD's a season in the horribly wretched passing system of 12.

Yeah, I passed on NCAA football this year. After playing through like 10 seasons of 11 (I had passed on the series for a few years and was willing to overlook the flaws) I couldn't even get through half a season last year. the game play just seemed stale and the AI was lame.

From what I've read, there are significant issues with safety play, the option, CPU play calling/execution (apparently they call like 15 screens a game and botch 75% of them) and pass blocking (apparently the ratings of OT's don't matter at all because the game is programmed to not allow the DE's to get a pass rush). I've seen videos where guys put their punter at LT on Heisman difficulty and the computer still can't beat him. Now the new patch apparently fixed some stuff but introduced a set of new issues.

Maybe I'll take another look next year when the new physics engine gets ported over from Madden and they've had a year to work out the kinks.

I really wish 2K would bring the NCAA Hoops franchise back. Best dynasty mode in sports game history.

NHL 13 demo comes out tomorrow. Game is supposed to be released on September 11. I love the NHL series, and apparently, NHL13 is supposed to be a BIG jump in what is already a great EA title.

Wondering if anybody wanted to get an XBOX360 EASHL team together? I'm in the Pacific Time Zone, usually play in the evenings/night time. I play Left Defense and have my legend card on NHL 12.

If there is enough interest, maybe we could even get a few games in on NHL 12 before 13 comes out.

Just let me know.

Yeah CH2K8 is one hell of a game. A little dated now..but still amazingly deep and still a ton of fun to play.

2K11 is still the best B-Ball game I have ever played and CH2K8 is right there behind it.

EA owns the rights, but of course they aren't producing a game.
Yeah, I know. Bums me out. The one they released a few years ago (they had separate presentation and commentary for CBS and ESPN, which was a cool idea) had promise but the gameplay, graphics and dynasty mode were all weak. I just rented it. Glad I didn't pull the trigger.I tried to pull out 2K8 a couple of months ago, but the graphics and game play are super dated now. Plus the recruiting and other dynasty mode stuff is pretty stale. Still loved that game though.

I know it was just released, but has anyone played Sleeping Dogs?

Its gotten pretty good reviews.
As someone who loves games like GTA, Sleeping Dogs looks like a must-buy with the reviews it's received. Though with Borderlands 2 coming out soon, I'll probably wait a while before picking up Sleeping Dogs.
It's actually the third game in the True Crime series of games. Name change was due to naming rights after the dev team left Activision. I heard it was good, but the guy I was talking to about it downplayed it because he said that Darksiders II is the game to play this week (that released this week) and Sleeping Dogs was just ok in comparison. I wasn't big on the True Crime games, so I don't know if I'll play this game. I'm sure it'll be good, though.
It's a GTA/Saints Row clone sent in Hong Kong.

If you gave the the option to take a bullet or play through another one of those games I think I would take my chances with the bullet.
That's why I'm not big on the True Crime series. It's also why I still haven't played Saint's Row The Third, even with how much fun I've heard it is. I like GTA, but I can only take so much.

I really regret playing GTAIV. It ruined Saints Row 3 for me, which I heard was better.

I have left madden for good after getting NCAA 12. Everything about the game is better.

I agree, though I wish that Division I FCS (or whatever the I-AA is called now) teams were also included. And Road to Glory still needs tons of work. I guess I've played so much My Player mode from NBA 2k11 that I wish it were similar in quality to that.

I like NCAA 13 well enough. I don't get super anal about the game's faults, which are plenty. It's still an enjoyable dynasty process and the game play is challenging enough. If you're a big CFB nut you'll enjoy it.

It just seems like the perfect parent/kid game. Exploring together, creative building, etc.I put it on peaceful and let my 6 yr old explore. She's not used to the FPS like comtrols yet but she loves it.

Yeah. How old was she when she played it? There is a bit of a learning curve so it could be frustrating for someone young. But once you get the hang of it, it's great. It's like playing virtual legos, with an adventure story.

She is 6 going on 7. I don't know the game well enough to help her yet but she was definitely frustrated

it is a great game to play with the kids. my kids and i have built castles, a city, a waterslide, and a huge mine. they love it. it's like legos with exploding green guys.

Thank you, fantastic post. I'm another College 2011 fan who is debating making the jump. I only play dynasty, and recruiting needed a bit of fun added to it.

the similarities ends at open world and guns. do yourself a favor and play Saints Row 2, and then try SR3. I liked 2 the best, but overall they are both strong.

2 is much darker. 3 is the opn world equivalent of an R rated summer action movie - totally tongue in cheek humor and action non stop. I prefer 3 but it's not for those who take their gaming particularly seriously.

smashing people to death with a giant purple marital aid IS serious gaming.

Without playing ME1, you're missing a lot of what makes it so great. ME2 is a fun game but the story will have gaping holes in it without at least reading the backstory comic.

ME1 was a complete disaster.Besides, I don't think the story is what interests him.

If he got a new copy of ME2, it should've come with the interactive comic that tells the story of ME1 and allows you to make all of the major decisions. The ME series is probably my favorite of all time. If you're not into the cut scenes, you can skip most of them by hitting the square button, but I would definitely recommend giving the game at least a couple of hours before you decide to quit on it.

ME1 was a complete disaster.
Why do you say this? You and I seem to have similar tastes in video games, so I'd be interested to know what your specific beefs with the game were. I'm a PS3 guy, but I've actually considered picking up an XBox for the sole purpose of getting to play through ME1. :bag:

Without playing ME1, you're missing a lot of what makes it so great. ME2 is a fun game but the story will have gaping holes in it without at least reading the backstory comic.
ME1 was a complete disaster.

Besides, I don't think the story is what interests him.
Really? I thought it was very good, and although the 2nd one is probably better, the first one did some things better than the 2nd.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG boring vehicle battles ruined it for me. Clunky controls didn't help.ME1 - BetaME2 - Polished version of an actual game.

The only thing I liked better about ME1 was the weapon customization was much deeper. They dumbed it down for the dreaded "casual" gamers in 2

The required vehicle battles weren't that long or boring, at least those required by the main story. The planet exploration dynamic, where most of the vehicle problems reared their head, was certainly a work in progress, but I'm not sure it was any worse than picking mushroom in Skyrim or any of the other drudgery found in a lot of great RPGs. The fact that ME1 isn't as good as ME2, one of the best RPGs of all time IMO, is not exactly slandering ME1.To the person who started this string of posts, there are a fair amount of cut scenes in ME. There's a big focus on story and the cut scenes flesh that out. The into is obviously cut scene heavy but if its not drawing you in after a while, it may just not be your thing.

I bought the game used from Gamestop. Do I still have access to this backstory comic? I assume it is on the CD? Or do I have to download it? Sorry for the questions, but I am at work and can't access the game. Would love to be able to read the backstory before going any further. So far, I have had to "guess" if I know characters I run in to or not.Edited to ask, if I can't get it after buying the game used, is it available anywhere else, like on the offical ME website or anything?

The ME series is probably my favorite of all time. If you're not into the cut scenes, you can skip most of them by hitting the square button, but I would definitely recommend giving the game at least a couple of hours before you decide to quit on it.
So far, I have sat through every possible dialog option as I figure it will provide key information and hopefully some backstory. Plus I tend to be OCD that way and just can't seem to skip the damn things even if they are boring me to tears.

If you're on PS3, I'm guessing you'll have to buy an online pass or something (probably for $10). If you do end up getting into the game/series though, it'll be money very well spent. I would estimate that I've played through ME2 about 10 times, and ME3 maybe 6 times.

A huge amount of this game is dialog. If you're a few hours in and you don't like it, don't expect it to "improve."Personally, I thought this game was moderately overrated the first time I played it. My second playthrough on Insanity was much, much better.

No really. ALL you need from ME1 is the Vigil scene. Which you can get from that Youtube link I put up.

ME2 and ME3 are absolutely fantastic though. I'm playing ME2 again myself.

Anyone get the new counter strike on steam? I played it a bit last night and was laughed at numerous times as I would end up being the last team member alive and just hide and wait for people to walk in front of me, only to be killed as I shot like a spazz all over the place.

I didn't know there was a new one. What has changed? Is it an update or a brand new game that you have to buy?eta - I see it's $15...

Counter Strike Source? That's not new.

Its called Global Offensive. I have not played CS in years so I cant tell you whats different. I can say that its seems like a much more polished and updated version of what I use to play when it was a mod.

I'll have to check it out. Never heard of it until now. I played a ton of CS in the past. Been quite a while though.
