Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

The Last of Us is PS3 only, SOB.
It looks fantastic. I think it would have been a console seller for me if it had come out a couple years ago. As it is, like some others here I will probably skip it or consider a PS4 when the time comes if it's backwards compatible.

Just thought you nerds would be interested to know that today is Nolan Bushnell's birthday.
Ah yes Atari and Chucky E Cheese founder. Sold Atari for about 30 million in 76 IIRC. Was a lot of money at the time. But nothing compared to today's market.
That equates to roughly 1.1 billion dollars today using a 3.5% inflation rate. That probably is not far off of today's market at all.

That's about what Facebook bought Instagram for. Although, Facebook overpaid by about a billion.

Yeah I guess. Although it seems an Atari that stayed relatively competitive would be worth more than a billion today. I mean they were the console market.

For further comparison, right now Zynga is worth about $1.2 billion. Also, Angry Birds creator Rovio is apparently worth about $5 billion. They turned down an offer from EA to buy them out at $2.25 billion in 2011.

I'm at the end of Mass Effect 1, partway through Ilos.

Just made sweet love to the Blue Chick (and youtubed Ash's scene) and full on assault on the ground. HUGE plot developments and its great to be fighting after way too much time in the Mako on the Geth worlds. Just talked to the Prothean AI guy, this is awesome
Plot has really developed and I'm really enjoying this game. Having ME2 and ME3 on hand should also allow me to buy DS3 and Bioshock3 for cheap on Ebay.

yeah hard to say obviously especially when the competition is much different today albeit with a much bigger market too.

You're at the spot where the story kicks into high gear. It's all awesomeness from here on.

I am about 27 hours into ME1 right now. I have done every side mission I can find. I am at level 41 I think and just finished up Noveria in the main quest.Lots of driving around in the Mako so far but it is quite fun since it climbs almost anything and never flips over :)

I've actually had to restart twice when I flipped the Mako over and couldn't get out.

Once was when I got stuck trying to drive over the stupid Markers you put down once you survey a site.I love driving up a hill and jumping as far as I can.

Starting up Dead Space 3. Not happy with the way the series has gone since the first one but will still love it anyway I'm sure. Why do all games have to go the action route nowadays?
 Huh? Dead Space has ALWAYS been an action game
Fair enough but the first one had a much stronger survival horror feeling to it. There are still some jump scares occasionally but even those are predictable now. Maybe its just the fact that we've seen it now but the atmosphere is lacking. Liking 3. Its on par with 2 at this point but i hear it falls apart in the back half. Willing to play through to find out at least.

Ok so I finished up the main quest line in Rage. There was some additional content and other missions after you finish the main that I may or may not get to. In general I found the game to be a decent play with very good graphics. A well made visual world. The action wasn't bad. The AI isn't Einstein but it isn't totally stupid either. So they can flank you if you aren't paying attention. Still I didn't have to use my defib much. I did get pretty close to total completion missed 2 cards and 1 jump. But I was disappointed:I am putting this in the spoiler thing since Andy was talking about playing

The ending killed it. They give me this big gun with hard core ammo and send me in to invade the Capitol on my own. "No one knows what is in there and no one has ever come back." So I am figuring lots of tough fighting and at least one really bad ### boss. I make sure I am fully supplied and ready to go. Instead I get hyped mutants that I slaughter with wing sticks and some Terminator looking guys that I can take out with the usual stuff. Worst sin in video games. A crap ending. You just put in a couple of dozen hours(or more) and you are left asking "Is that it? Seriously?". Real bummer. Up until the end it was hanging as a 7 for me but the ending knocked it down to a 6. Even if the extra content is cool it doesn't really fix the disappointment. If it takes extra content to fix it then it should have been in there to start with. Also I play on whatever the normal setting is. I expect that to be challenging but not ridiculous. It isn't like playing on easy. I expect to get the full effect of the game. So I don't play games on Insane or whatever to get a satisfying ending either. Right now I am not feeling it so I don't know if I'll get into the extra content or not. I have Bioshock in the wings and am itching to dive in.
So in the end my rating is a 6. Some fun stuff to do, strong visuals but inconsistent game play and what I mentioned above. Not sure of the replay value but I think it's pretty limited.

Rumors on details about the next Xboxen are beginning to fly fast and furious, with an always-on Internet connection and Blu-ray drive being the latest. Edge cites sources with "first-hand experience" who rehash previously noted tech specs, but also mention the next Xbox will have an improved Kinect and an always-on internet connection to cut out the second-hand game market from the platform. The use of high-capacity Blu-ray discs seems a natural assumption since ... well, HD-DVD is no longer with us.
Oh my...

Finished ME1 last night. Not sure if I should play through again (this time as a renegade instead of my goody-goody Paragon) or jump right into ME2.Great game, great ending, very well done. Kicking myself for not getting 2 more light and 1 more heavy metal to finish that task, but I can always re-load a previous save point. I don't think Ilos/Citadel took that long.

I vote for going right to ME2.Finish it through first as a paragon then go back and do renegade. I actually like doing half paragon/half renegade being kind to the good and ruthless to the bad.

This will cut my game purchases down to about 2-4 a year.

that may be 2-4 more than I do, unless the prices drop dramatically, which I doubt. :kicksrock: This seem inevitable at this point as every PS4/Xbox720 rumor seems to point to the ending of second hand games.

Yeah I was fighting admitting it but it seems to be the way they are going. It's just so greedy. It will definitely affect the market and I don't think it will be in a good way.

If I understand this correctly, it will do more than just effect the after market buying and selling of games on ebay and GameStop, it should eliminate it entirely for the next generation of games. If this comes to pass I can't see how the brick and mortar GameStops stay in business three years from the new Gen's releases. They will likely move their entire business to online once the current gen after market gaming dies down.

I meant the whole gaming market. This is going to drive efforts to pirate and it will certainly reduce the number of players I think. I can't see how this in anyway improves anything for the game makers or console sellers long term.

If they're thinking they'll be able to convert those who normally buy used to new game buyers I think they're really mistaken. With the pressure from Steam (no pun intended), new consoles like the Ouya, and all the portable gaming that can be done on phones, I think the vast majority of people will say "#### you, I can be just as satisfied with this $5 handheld/online game as I can with your $60 console based one".I can't see any way that it would work while maintaining the same pricepoint.

As discussed previously, hopefully the prices would come down for older games more quickly. So instead of buying a year old game for $20 used, maybe you just download it for $20 new. :shrug:I guess we'll see. Sucks that there won't be any more game sharing/borrowing with your buddies.

I agree.I speculated earlier in the thread that I think this is going to crank up piracy efforts significantly, something the PS3 at least, was not bothered with in too great a degree.

I have to assume though they bean counted out the various scenario's and came up with it being more profitable to have less players playing but playing at a higher net cost.

agreed. My eyes were really opened recently just playing Path of Exile. I was shocked at the quality of the gaming experience, even while still in beta, for a price point of $0.I am hopeful there will be different outlets for gaming for me but I am not going to be able to justify going from a net cost of $10 back to a net cost of $60 if I want to play a new game, or a net cost of even $30 if I wait a year for a game.

Since we're talking about the PS4 and NextBox720 and their lack of support for used games, I thought I'd post this update to something I mentioned here before: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-02-01-german-group-files-legal-complaint-against-valves-steam-service

German group files legal complaint against Valve's Steam service

German consumer group complains about Valve's lack of digital resale

The Federation of German Consumer Association (Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband, VZBV) has submitted a legal complaint over Valve's lack of haste in making changes to its End-User License Agreement (EULA).

In September of last year, the VZBV threatened to pursue Valve in court if it did not change its EULA to allow Steam users to resell their digital content. The organization also took issue with Valve not allowing an opt-out for users that did not want to sign the new EULA. Ultimately, the VZBV says that digital games should be handled like physical games and the current status quo isn't beneficial to consumers in the long run.

"We have submitted complaint against the company to the district court Berlin," VZBV spokesperson Eva Hoffschulte told Cinema Blend.

The VZBV has stated that it will take its case all the way up to the Supreme Court if Valve doesn't come into compliance with EU law. Valve will be modifying its EULA on January 31, but the VZBV believes that it may be a case of 'too little, too late'.
Apparently Valve will be following suit, as to not get into legal trouble, but Germany may still take them to court over it. But where it intrigues me is whether they will change this for everywhere in the EULA. Also, I assume that the new Playstation and XBox will sell in Germany, as the current platforms do. So they will be required to be held to the same laws. As far as Steam goes, technically, you can't buy a used digital game - only transfer license - so there's no worries about getting a broken game.

I'm curious if last year's judgement will make any waves.

Actually not as excited for Starcraft as I thought. Looks like you play as the zerg which I've never liked.

This is wrong. See Steam for the model on what's going to happen. Personally, prefer the digital media vs hardcopies.

Doesn't really matter since Steam wants to do the same thing. Delivery method isn't the point really.

Look at music and movies for your answer to this problem. How long before games are cloud-based? Spotify for gaming. You pay X a month, and get access to games. It's bound to happen.

The biggest market is America. In America about 40% of households do not have high speed access and about 5% of Americans can't get high speed access in any way. That is millions of people that might enjoy games now that wouldn't in that scenario. I think it will be quite a while before that is the dominant way people play.

I'm thinking a very high percentage of current gen console owners have high speed Internet. I have no link, but I can't think of a single console owner I know who doesn't - even if they don't play online.

The percentage is much lower than you'd think. I have many in my family that don't connect at all. I have a nephew who was one day bragging about how he beat Left 4 Dead and I asked him "How do you beat Left 4 Dead? It's a multiplayer/co-op game." He's never played it with another human being.

I think I'll hang onto my PS3 for a very long time. I'm sure the next-gen will be amazing, but I'm happy with the current system plus I can continue to trade games.Somebody said earlier in the thread that $60/game is a bargain in terms of entertainment/hour, and they are right. For whatever reason, the MFGs locking up the ability to re-sell/buy a game just bothers me.

:goodposting: I'll definitely buy a PS4, and I seldom buy used game anyway, so really this development doesn't affect me that much; if it lowers retail game prices by destroying the secondary market, I might actually benefit. But the principle of the thing is really annoying. This is kind of like Bioware charging you extra for day one DLC that's already on the disc, only orders of magnitude worse. I bought the game, I own it, and if I want to lend it to a friend you can #### off.

News from GameStop this week said that they would be closing 500 stores this year. :( My linkI hope the one by my house doesn't close. They do pretty good business at that mall location.

My guess is the weak performers go first and there are probably a lot just treading water. If it does a good business and is profitable they hold on to it. Plus removing some stores from the market will make the others stronger and they will have more choices in stock since they have less locations for trade ins.

Actually, you could not be more wrong. Delivery method is everything. If publishers no longer need to worry about delivering discs, prices go down significantly and sales happen quicker. That's the end game and a big win for consumers, imo.

Yeah I don't think so. If they can get 60 now why drop the price? Consumers will whine but keep right on buying. And then for those to whom 60 is a lot of money they have now taken away the right for them to buy used. All because they don't get a piece of every sale. Well I don't send GM money when I sell a used Chevy either. Pure greed. No reason to think they are going to suddenly give up free margin.
