Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Thanks. I'll look into the Halo series and the Earth Defense one for sure. And yes, downloading from the Arcade is a good option too. I'm pretty sure the first thing he'll ask is if he can download Minecraft.
Everybody has made some good suggestions. Minecraft is a perfect game for a 10 year old. A complete sandbox to do anything in without really any killing or violence.

Lega Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter etc is also perfect. No blood. Plays through the movies he may already know if he's seen them. Some minor critical thinking and puzzle solving. Good clean fun.

Halo is about the edge of T or M you want to get to at that age. There's violence but it's against aliens. Still fairly realistic. Probably your discretion on whether your kid can handle it.

Call of Duty, even the old ones (2 and 3) are pretty graphic. You are shooting and killing human beings. Even if they are nazis, they are still humans. Up to you on that one.

You got portal 2. I'd definitely recommend portal 1. Will provide some backstory as well as give a better basis for the controls. Lots of good sarcastic humor that will probably go right over his head.

Any sports game of his liking is available to you for pretty cheap. Just get older year versions of any sport for probably $10.

Lots of stuff to choose from really. Enjoy the bonding with your kid.
Oh yeah, I probably should have mentioned he has Lego Star Wars Complete Trilogy and Lego Star Wars III on the Wii. Those were by far his favorite games until Madden '13. Good stuff.I only saw the original Portal in the Orange Box bundle. Now I see that it's in the Arcade.

This is my first time looking at the Arcade choices. Wow. :o Andy was spot-on, these games could be all he needs for quite awhile.

Has anyone downloaded NFL Blitz? That looks right up his alley. Better than Madden Arcade?

And is there a preferred way to buy points for this? $20 for Minecraft is a little pricier than I hoped.
There are several clones of this on live for about 80 msp. Im especially interested in the one which is sorta terraforming/set in space. They have (timed) demos if you want to let the kids have a go....

Zelda skyward sword. Introducing my boys to the series. Fun family game. Everyone helps with puzzles. Game rules.

For those of you who use Xbox Live and specifically points.1. Join Bing Rewards.2. Use Bing in place of Google, or use the Bing quick search in your browser. You earn points for searches. 3. Cash in Bing Rewards points for MS points. 4. Profit.

As slow as Google has been for the last week or so, I may switch to Bing.

Let's pool our money and win this eBay auction.
He has both Limited edition Resident Evil Dreamcasts! The rare red Claire Redfield version and the ultra-rare (like 500 made) S.T.A.R.S. Version! Nice. I don't see how he sells all this as one thing though.IF I was a professional athlete or actor or musician that made like $10mil a year, I'd totally drop $550k on this.

Anyone here been playing any Planetside 2? I've been getting into it the last week or so. Pretty fun game, especially if you have a squad that is working together. For those that don't know about it, it's a free MMOFPS game. The continents/servers are huge, and there's always something going on. You can play completely for free and do just fine. You can also buy weapons for real cash if you don't want to wait until you play enough to unlock them. There is infantry, ground, and air combat.Let me know if anyone starts playing, I'm on Jaeger server, US East, New Conglomerate faction.

That isn't available on xbox is it? I think the poster was asking for xbox games.
He might of just been throwing it out there in the video game thread for general consumption.
Oh, if that's the case, then the Ratchet and Clank games are a must for a ten year old that wants to kill things. Plenty of shooting, puzzles, co-op etc, in a bright cartoon world. Very non violent for all the shooting (mostly kill robot like things).

Well Dead Space 3 is getting better. I'm 10 percenrt through according to the progress monitor. Pretty sure the clunky gameplay was just me. The enemies are definitely harder or weapons weaker. The story is the worst of the 3 but still enjoyable. Not a big fan of the new weapons mod style and really don't like the fact that ammo is ammo and not gun specific. Were I to rate the game it would be a rent or buy it used. No need to get at full pop unless you're a DS nut like me.

Let me know when you finish up and take it to GameStop.

OK so further in now. I got Inferno and looking for Telekinesis. My only issue so far is hacking. I really suck at it apparently. But that's on me and hopefully I'll get better with practice. The whole storyline is pretty intriguing and an interesting comment on should we because we can. Really enjoying it.

So, what am I missing here...guys are complaining that if the second hand market goes away, they're SOL from buying games a huge discounts. How so? I mean, using Steam as the model, after, say, a year, games are super cheap and AAA-titles that were $60 are then $10-$20. Anyone wanna point out how that differs from buying a used game long after its released?

You could start a museum off that collection.

And why do you think Steam feels the need to do that? Do you think it is their kind and gentle nature or competition from places like Game Stop? Places that will no longer be providing that competition.

Darksiders was free on PSN Plus, so I downloaded that one, got through the tutorial a couple of days ago, and started in earnest today. It's basically a God of War knockoff (your character is actually named "War" as in the corresponding horseman of the apocalypse) but it's still enjoyable so far. My main problem with these kinds of games is that my sole approach to combat involves spamming the [] key. I never know what combos to buy, and I usually forget to use the ones I do buy.

it's because they're selling you a file, which is an extremely small cost relative to a physical product, and most people aren't paying 60 bucks for a 2 yr old game, because there's all kinds of competition from current titles.marking down older games is just common sense.

This is all assuming Sony and Microsoft follow the steam model with console games. If they do, then yea it'd be great. I'm more than a little reserved when I think of those 2 companies deep discounting games after a year (sometimes less than a year) the way Steam does.

Again, this is not only about being about to buy used games a year or so later. It is just as much about being about to buy a brand new game on release day and still pay $10-$15 net because you can resell the game when you are done with it.As an important side note are you 100% sure a steam model is going to emerge for the consoles? After years of buying and selling games, I have found the single best way to lower ones cost is to search out presale discounts for brand new games online, play the games immediately and then resell on ebay when done after a month or two. You can lower your cost down to as close a $0 as possible that way on a single game. Of course pre sale discounts are not common but anyone you can find helps to keep your average net cost down.

OK so several hours of game play in. For those following along at home I am on my way to Arcadia.Doing pretty good so far I think. I have been doing my best to explore everywhere, they hide a lot of rooms in this game, and find everything. I think I am doing OK there. I currently have a bunch of ADAM from saving the girls, that does seem to be the best long term strategy. There has got to be an easier to kill big daddies though. So far I have died a lot. A minor gripe is the game doesn't fully recharge you on the way out of the chamber. I'm not playing easy but you usually only see that on higher level play then normal. Like I said minor gripe. I know I am supposed to be using plasmids and all that but I sure felt better when I got the shotgun. In my heart I prefer to shoot over magic or plasmids or whatever. Give me double ought buck, an extended tube and let me have at.

At least at these early levels the big daddies are like multiple bosses on each level. Just eat up a ton of resources to take out. I am going to have to stratergize some on it.

You're very close to the point where big daddies get to be pushovers. Between the crossbow (trap bolts specifically), the rocket launcher (which you might already have), the Hypnotize Big Daddy plasmid, and the Security Bullseye plasmid (fail a hack on purpose, tag the big daddy, and sit back and watch), they're very easy from Fort Folic on.This game has the most strongly inverted difficulty curve of any game I've ever played. It's quite hard early on, and the first few big daddies are tough as hell, but it eases up dramatically as you go along.

Use your armor piercing rounds when you have them. If you don't want to use your shock magic to stun them, maybe stock up on shock rounds for your shotgun. I found that if you don't incapacitate them in some way, there is no evading them. They just bull charge you 95% of the time.

For NCCommish, I haven't seen people mention it yet, but since you should have the camera by now, make sure to do research on the Big Daddies, Little Sister and other Splicers when you can. Since the Daddies don't attack until provoked, they are easy to research. Research helps out with difficulty and unlocks. This applies to everything you can research. Also, the different Big Daddies are researched separately.

Yeah I got the camera and am researching everything. I think I have already gotten two levels on lead heads. I know I have some new damage bonuses off it at least on a couple of splicers and I think I got a damage bonus for BDs as well. Or at least a certain kind. So I am working that angle.

Yeah the bull rush is definitely their thing and it works. I have been stunning them but it isn't quite effective enough. Need to get next level of shock.

I love me some crossbow and rocket launcher so can't wait.

Two hours into ME2...and its different. Much crisper, cleaner, different controls  ...just different everything. Almost sanitary. Story is very interesting so far, we'll see what happens. :blackdot:

So I was feeling like crap today and I stayed home. Fever, stuffy nose, sore throat, etc. So in the afternoon I feel well enough to set up in front of the TV for some more gaming. Man the whole save the trees thing was intense. And finding the stuff with the bees? Took me a few visits to the vita-chamber. I did do real well with the group attacks though while the serum was prepping. Just hit Fort Frolic.

Probably won't go much further today. I am planning on trying to get to work tomorrow so that means an early night. I forgot to mention so far my favorite goodie is that one that makes you a walking stun gun. So great when someone gets behind you and gets lots of shock damage for their troubles.

Definitely a different feel in 2. Much more story and action driven. A lot of firefights compared to the first one but way better controls during them. The character development was the best part though. You truly end up caring for all these beings.

The second level of that makes Big daddy's a cinch. You could basically wrench them to death.

Xbox 720 to Reportedly Require Kinect to Function, Support MultitaskingSystem could require motion sensor to function.February 11, 2013by Scott LoweThe next-generation Xbox may not only be accompanied by a new and improved Kinect, but may actually require the sensor to function. Kotaku has published an exhaustive report about Microsoft's forthcoming console, lending credence to many prior rumors about the system's performance and features, but revealing new information about how the system may interact with Kinect, as well as its capacity for running multiple simultaneous games and apps.According to the site's source, SuperDaE, who you might remember as the source of PlayStation 4 devkit rumors last month and attempting to sell a Durango devkit on eBay last year, every Xbox 720 will ship with the next-generation Kinect and will require the sensor to be connected in order to function. The company is apparently building Kinect functionality into the framework of the system, using the sensor to identify players and even accept Siri-like voice commands. This marks a bold new push for Kinect integration, which has been slow-growing for the Xbox 360. As we've heard in the past, Kotaku says that the emphasis on Kinect will come paired with substantial performance improvements, with the sensor capable of tracking six simultaneous players and detecting even the smallest of gestures and facial expressions.SuperDaE has also revealed information about how the system stores and installs games. Unlike the Xbox 360, the next Xbox will ship in only one configuration with 500GB of storage, allowing players to install games from discs. Using its powerful new internals, the Xbox 720 will be capable of installing games as you play them, limiting lengthy load times.

Everyone wants to run head first into the next big thing. Hasn't the industry taught them anything over the last 30 years? Gimmicks controllers and add-ons are fads that come and go. If the games that go with them suck, what's the point? People buy your system to play the games on it. Every Kinect game I've ever played has sucked and/or not worked as intended. It's why I don't own a Kinect for my 360.

These new consoles and their requirements and restrictions might make me just buy a good gaming pc instead. I don't want some clunky kinect and I don't want to be forced to buy new games or not be a me to borrow from a friend etc.

I'm still struggling to find gaming time but finally got a few hours to play Journey. It's excellent. I haven't played a game twice in years but I think I'll give this one another run. It only takes a few hours.

I think the Kinect stuff is a little different - it's probably here to stay in one form or another. It makes a lot of sense for some games. I do agree with you that a lot of Kinect games are junk that don't work well, but I'm confident the industry will learn that every game doesn't need it. But it's good for some sports games, exercise/dance games, music games, and probably a few other neat things we haven't heard of coming down the pike. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

I think I got the second one but I'll have to check. One of my other minor complaints about the game is the inability to get in and see what I have slotted. I really shouldn't have to find a machine to figure that out or to make changes IMO. It just adds unnecessary steps.

So a machine that has always on internet and has a sensor that tracks my every move?No thanks, Microsoft.
Yeah that does seem a bit much. I am really planning on holding on to my 360 as long as possible. In the interim I may start buying the pieces parts I need to build a decent gaming pc and get out of the console deal. Which sucks I went to console so I could get out of the endless upgrade loop. But they are really making it more and more acceptable to me.

More 720 news and rumors

I think the voice command stuff has been a pretty cool add. It's been pretty well implemented in ME3 and NBA 2k, at least. And occasionally my friends who aren't big gamers come over and get a big kick out of some of the dumb kinect games like adventures. I'm not going to kill MS for pursuing that angle.

The "Kinect required" rumor seems pretty far-fetched. First of all, a lot of people, probably a large majority of console owners, would rather just us a controler to operate the console anyway; imposing Kinect on them against their will just ticks people off for little reason. More importantly, though, it's one more piece of the system that can potentially fail. If it's required for the 720 to operate at all, it weakens the reliability of the entire console. That's the main reason why I hate always-on internet. If my ISP has a hiccup, I'm going to be pissed if I can't play an offline SP game. Requiring Kinect adds one more thing that can go wrong.I don't doubt that Kinect will be standard with the new Xbox, but requiring it to be on all the time seems like an unlikely decision.
