Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (6 Viewers)

Any good ideas guys on any good games I can play with my 2 (almost 3) yr old son? I want to get him started early!

I've mostly been playing adult games (Skyrim, Fallout, Dishonored, etc...) my whole life, and now that I have a son I want to get started, I dont have any clue on what's out there that he would enjoy.

Ideally, something that we can both play together 2-players. I have a 360 - his favorite shows right now Thomas, Mickey Mouse, Disney/Pixar, Super Why, and so on. He doesnt have very many legos, but does enjoy playing w/ building blocks.

Thanks!
i started my son at 4.5 with lego marvel. 2-3 seems a little young just cuz they dont have the thumb coordination. I was actually shocked how quickly my son picked up playing the lego games at 4.5. He can do everything on his own. I tried to let him play little big planet but that was still a bit too tough. The good thing about the lego games is you dont die. So its a little easier for them. That being said, id seriously try to put off video games with your child until much later. Why? Cuz my son wants to play every night now. He doesnt wanna go outside and play basketball, hed rather play the lego games. And he asks me every day. I usually only let him play an hour every other day and i play with him. But i kind of regret starting him so early. Dont get me wrong, we have a ton of fun together too.

i got stuck in portal 1, so im scared to start portal 2. but i do like the game.

I can't stop playing Diablo 3 on 360. Love it, and was quite proud of myself for taking out the Butcher without dying. He was such a PITA in the first Diablo.
I picked up a used copy of Diablo 3 for the PS3 because I was sick of waiting for the PS4 release. Played the hell out of it, to the point that I'll probably pass on the port since I feel like I've played it about as much as I'll ever play it. Or at least I'll wait another year or so and get it out of the bargain bin.

Blizzard really needed to release this thing much earlier. At least in my case, they lost a definitely sale.

Very rarely justify spending $60+ on a new game, so I scroll right past most new game posts. I am all about playing old games or getting used ones for $10-15 dollars. o
:goodposting:

Paying over $10 for a game is for suckers (at least for PC gamers it is).
Oh stop. We spend what we spend, and we all have our preference and spending threshold. I buy $60 games all the time. I just paid $30 for Divinity on Steam. I'm enjoying them.

Dang quit arguing about FO and someone take a copy or so of my Magicka. . . :)
I already have it, or I would GB. It's a good game.

To put in my $.02 about the Fallout talk. I rather like it, even though I'm not really participating or even playing it right now. It's a great game worthy of the discussion. Too bad we can't get a video games subforum so that we can spread the video game talk out. But since we can't, this thread is the perfect place for it.

Sucker.

I rarely spend 60 on games. I can count on my 10 fingers hiw many i bought for 60 over the past 5 years. I typically wait 3-6 months and snag them used, and on sale. I also pretty much wait for the 19.99 prime and new price point on Amazon.

I am a sucker for sports games and typically those are what get me, but even those i have been able to snag for 40 new on some promotion.

People pay whatever they want.

Games I paid full retail( 60 bucks) for on PS3 the past several years are:

MLB The Show 14

The Last Of Us

Dead Space 3

Mass Effect 3

NCAA 14

Skyrim

Batman Arkham City

I bought XCom, Mass Effect 3, Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City ( still pissed about that one), and Resident Evil 5 brand new in the last few years.

I rarely buy new stuff anymore myself but I did preorder Dark Souls II. Before that I think Skyrim.

At this point going forward, the only games I can see myself buying new is a new Dark Souls game, Gears reboot or Madden once I pick up a XB1.

I'm trying to hold out for a XB1 Slim/redesign that will eventually come out so it might be 2 years before I buy another new game.

I just re- purchased Skyrim for $9 last night on the 360 since I have all the DLC and never started any of them. I hear good things about Dawngard.

To me, there just havent been many new games worth buying/talking about. Both consoles are in the middle of launches, launch titles and games the first year or so often have worts (although I have really enjoyed Dead Rising 3.)

I miss Amazon's per-order bonuses. I used to get $10~$20 bonus plus some other goodie like mp3 credit or something. Play the game a few months depending on its quality, then sell on ebay for $40~$50, rinse and repeat.

I find myself gravitating back to Civ 5 lately (always been a fan of these games.) I really enjoy the early game, exploring, finding ruins or natural wonders, building the ancient wonders. But often when I get to the middle game I dont finish, the AI on the higher difficulties just cheats too much. Land grabs like crazy, rushes wonders or buys territory, pumps out endless amounts of units to attack me, gets too tedious.

Any games out there that are more like the early game? Ancient civilizations, exploration, etc. I wish 4x games hadnt have mostly died out, hard to find good ones.

I bought the Gods and Kings expansion during the summer sale and have been playing it again lately too.

They have revamped some of the Age of Empires games it might be worth checking them out.

I think I'm getting close to the end of Dragon's Dogma. Not really sure if I'm actually liking this game or not overall.

I really enjoy the combat, it's a lot of fun. I like how you engage the larger enemies by climbing up on them to get to critical spots and such. Just feels more natural than hey, I'm going to use my daggers on this ogre's ankles and he's going to die soon. You get to climb up him, stab at his head, more like what you'd see in a good adventure movie. Special combat abilities are pretty good.

I also like the character class/upgrade system. It lets you get some good abilities an is pretty easy to decide you want to completely switch classes even in the middle of the game and be able to get your character powered up pretty quickly.

I hate the equipment system in the game. It's a combination of purchasing/finding new gear (armor, weapons, clothing) and upgrading them. The worst part is when you are looking to buy new gear I can't find any way to tell what you currently have. You see the stat change, but since you may or may not have upgraded the gear you are wearing it's hard to say which piece is actually better. A lot of time's I've purchased things because I think it will be better then the upgraded stuff I'm wearing after I upgrade it, but then I go and do it, spend a bunch of money, and F it's almost equal or not as good as what I already have. Really damn frustrating.

I also am not too big on their companion system. You get one companion that you can completely equip assign class and abilities, and partially set their AI behavior in combat. You then get two companions that you recruit that pretty much come as is. They don't level, and you have to continually go to search for one that has the class/abilities you want as they get under leveled.

Story is ok, but not too engaging for me. I think I'm going to finish it, but I doubt it ever gets a replay. I know there was a poster that was really enjoying this game, just not getting the same feeling.

any of the newer Resident Evil games worth a play?

RE 4 is probably one of my favorite games ever, but heard bad things about the newer ones.

The biggest upside to the newer RE games is the online co op. Which is improved greatly with headsets. You can match up with other random people too (or alone with the game controlling the other character) but with a buddy it's always better. It's an alright game on its own still just not nearly as good.

So in October there's going to be 3 solid looking RPG titles in Dragon Age: Inquisition, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Lords of the Fallen. Witcher 3 isn't getting released until early 2015 I believe.

Dragon Age will likely have the best story.

Mordor the best new aspect ( Orc armies sound pretty awesome).

Fallen the most tactical combat.

I worry that DA will just be hack and slash. That Mordor will be just a "the bad guy killed my family now I'm going to hunt him down" type of story that never really pulls you in. And that Fallen will be a good all around game but that doesn't do anything new or special.

Just quick previews on these games after watching a bunch of videos.

DA will be a release day buy for me. I'm interested in learning more about the others. Not having any good RPGs on the xbox 1 so far has been annoying.

Shadows of Mordor is gonna be much better on PS4 than PS3, right? Not just a graphics upgrade?
The PS3 is going to have either a watered down version of the "Nemesis System" or maybe not have that in it at all. The nemesis system what makes a enemy remember you and also move up in their Orc hierarchy.

Here's a link to an IGN article discussing the new vs old systems.

so if I have 0 capability or interest to do that, the newer games aren't worth the time?

NO! Dear god no!

I would say if youre expecting anything Resident Evil related, absolutely dont waste your time. However, if you want just another co-op shooter with some zombies and monsters, then have at it.

My DA worry lately has been with graphics and look/feel. Watching the gameplay videos they have released, it just don't look DA to me. They say beta footage so maybe the quality is just low, surprising if they are only a couple months away from release, but still, even if they were up-res'd it just doesn't look like the other two. They were on the "grittier" side for lack of a better word, the way your character would be getting covered with blood during battles and stuff.

This is the game I've been looking forward to because DA:O was one of my favorite games in recent years, and I really enjoyed DA2. I'm just starting to worry a little bit. hopefully I'm completely wrong.

Outside of the release day ending to ME3, I've always loved all things Bioware. I'm perfectly willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this kind of stuff.

I kind of agree with being overwhelmed by all the FO talk. It definitely seemed with as much talk about that one game going on, it deserved its own thread.

I love the new Fallout thread, and I love the variety of games that are being discussed here since it was started.

Everybody wins!

Okay I don't under the whole concept of Orc army control for shadows of Mordor. The only thing I really took away from the trailers I saw is that certain NPC attributes are randomly generated making each encounter/play through unique. What is the deal with Orc armies?

Not an expert on it, but one of the trailers shows that you can use your powers to "enslave" an orc captain and give him commands to attack the next level up orc commander that you are going after. It looks like the orc's under your enslaved orc will follow along with their leader. You can also "enslave" individual orc's to help you get past situations I think.

Seems interesting but is it direct control or more like giving commands to an NPC companion like, say....in Fallout 3.

Once you get into the game it will also get back into those darker, grittier caves and dungeons. I think with most demos they try to show off how good their lighting systems is. I might lose a bit of that feel at points but I think it will give a better feeling of a larger and more diverse world. I have no idea but I do trust Bioware too.

Here's a link to 16 minutes of game play that's labelled as alpha. It looks pretty good but I also watched it on my phone. It sounds awesome when the dragon lands.

There's quite a bit going on with the armies.

1) Nemesis system is Orc learning your fighting traits. And remember and reflecting that later. So in the example they had during one fight the hero fought a bunch of Orcs. He threw one in the fire and then that burnt Orc ran away. Later that Orc climbs his hierarchy later and becomes a boss/boss fight. Burnt face and all.

2) You can choose to kill a boss or turn him into your henchman. If you turn him to your side you also get his followers. Later in the game you can have your factions fight other Orc factions. You can also used that turned boss to do attack other bosses at certain points.

3) You can turn a low ranked solider so they start fighting for you. I'm not sure if they continue to climb the ranking ladder if they survive.

4) I don't believe that at any point you actually take manual control of an Orc.

5) I'm unclear on this but you can grow your reputation to make others (Orcs) fear you. I'm not sure how this impacts the game.

That'd be so cool if you could. It'd be like street fighter, where you learn new fighting mechanics with each character type.

That would be awesome. There's also giant Orcs, who would pretty awesome to just mow through an enemy army of Orcs.

The good news is that TLOU is only $50, not $60.

I think Diablo 3 comes out on PS4/XB1 in August. Then a whole bunch of stuff drops in Oct/Nov. The Order, the new Assassins Creed, Dragon Age, DriveClub, Evolve, etc.

The Order got bumped into 2015 didn't it? Or is this a different game than the 1886 one?

Oof, you're right. Completely missed that.

Dedicated Fallout thread sucks. Tangents to conversations are already developing making it a de facto Video games thread light.

I'm calling BS on booting the FO guys from this thread.

BOOOOOOOOO!!!

Stop. It's going fine. Those guys can post their daily FO journals in that thread and get the exact same back-and-forth between 3-5 posters going that was filling this thread, and we'll all be happy. No need to keep #####ing about it. There's no logical reason to not have a separate thread. No ones going to be annoyed there's a dedicated Fallout thread unless there's five of them.

To the FO guys, I for one seriously appreciate you moving the chatter and understand it's a pain. So thank you. I also wasn't aware that there had been similar "complaints" lately (it's hard to catch everything in this thread via mobile skimming past huge nested quotes) and wasn't trying to pile on at all, it just seemed like the logical solution.

How many threads exist without any tangents? That thread will simply evolve another general video game thread and this thread will be worse off for it. Suck it up and learn how to scroll past posts that don't interest you.

Who's fault is it that posters can't figure out to post general video game/PC vs. console/etc. posts in the video game thread and not the Fallout thread? Their own. It's working fine. Stop being the one jack wagon who won't shut up about it.

If a thread about a specific topic goes off on a general tangent, that's fine, as you still know where to post about that specific topic to get it back on track.

If a thread about a general topic goes too far off on a specific tangent, it clogs the entire thread when it's obvious a specific thread tailored to that discussion should suffice. Because all kinds of generic things are discussed in a general topic thread, it's easy to lose singular posts that could be answered or discussed among a buttload of posts only a small niche of posters care about.

Plus, you're ignoring the ridiculous mobile experience of scrolling through epic-sized nested quotes on FBG. This wouldn't be nearly the problem it is if they'd limit it to 3 nested quotes or so.

Again, I have nothing against the FO chatter except that it makes this thread unreadable. Part of that is the website's fault. A couple pages of back and forth about a game brought up in this thread is understandable. Nested quotes filled with novellas about daily FO3/NV journals is ridiculous and needs it's own space.
