Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Played through the first 2 chapters of FFXV. Took me 6 hours because sometimes I wander off.

Pros: Huge world, lots to do, decent combat. Interesting overall story with some pretty good moments.

Cons: Story feels all over the map and has very weak points, overwhelming amount of stuff to learn, combat doesn't always feel fluid. Some really bad voice acting at times (but I personally don't care much about that).

Recommendation: I heard that they are making story patches so this game gets a very strong "WAIT to play".
Got this for xmas and have played an unhealthy amount... on chapter 8.

I'm going to complain about a lot of stuff here. I'm enjoying the game but honestly think it is one of the weakest... worse than FFXII.

-Beautiful huge world but my god, far more time spent just trying to get places than actually playing the game. A simple hunt quest takes 15 minutes of walking, 3 minutes of fighting.

-Magic has taken a huge backseat. Hurting your teammates with spells? Weak. Also, no upgrading spells. Creating your own is cool but also kind of dumb. As an L1 player, you can easily create an L99 spell. Barely even need them anyway. No more strategy with haste, poison, shell, fog, poison, heal, etc. Really miss that.

-The combat is essentially, use a big spell right off the hop. Warp strike in, hit a couple times, warp out. Maybe use another spell if the opponent is weak to something and because you have max spells right from the start. Then just continue warp striking, using other teammates very weak abilities, and using potions when hurt. Very simplistic fighting. And when you get in a battle in a tight space? Ugg... can't warp out of harms way. Can't use a spell without crushing your teammates. Just mash warp strike and using potions. Can't even see what is going on half the time.

-Summons? Haven't seen one yet even though according to the wiki I should have two by now. They are 'random' in that you can't summon them but they come at certain times/places to help. Dumb.

-No 'book' on opponents weaknesses like in every single previous version.

-Fishing, cooking, pictures and survival are incredibly useless and seem thrown in at the last minute to have something else to level up. Haven't found a reason to do these other than for a few AP points.

-Some incredibly repetitive cut scenes. Every time you enter your car at night it is the same freakin spiel that monsters come out at night! Just stop already!

Done rambling for now.

God of War for a 10 year old?    Didn't the last one have a part where you pressed buttons to control the pelvic thrusting of Kronos raping a prostitute or something?
Eh, without turning this into a parenting debate, the dude sees and hears worse at school, sports, etc.  Especially having older brothers.  I don't recall too much sex stuff, but I don't see why its not a parenting opportunity.  I'd rather be the one explaining stuff than a 12yo teammate.  Appreciate your comment.

Why do conversations have to be mini cut scenes?
Not all of them are. When they are it is usually due to narrative. This is a huge world that is also trying to tell a very involved story. This isn't Skyrim where the story is kind of who cares. The story is integral to the game.

Yeah I get that but you can have that conversation without having a mini cut scene. Total pain in the ###.

Apparently Mass Effect is even sooner now. 3/21/17

Official Announcement

Over this holiday break, developers at BioWare took home a version of the game in what we call the “holiday build”.  This is a longstanding studio tradition that goes back to the early days of the original

Mass Effect. Many load up a PC or console and go home to play as much as possible at their leisure.

How can I get that job?!?

I know I'm in the extreme minority here, but this is the video game thread so here it goes.  I really did not like Witcher 3.
I liked it enough to finish it, but didn't like Geralt or the tone of the game much.

Best part of the game was the end - i got the "worst" ending, which I thought was fitting and pretty awesome.  A good end for Geralt's story (for those that have seen it, you know what I mean).

They aren't cut scenes - it zooms in on the participants in the conversation so you can see facial expressions, etc, like just about every RPG does. There is a little bit of an annoying load time when you initialize conversations, but that's a performance issue. And a valid criticism - the load times on my Xbox one generally suck in this game.

Wanted a sword/armor RPG over the holidays (and still too cheap to pick up Witcher 3...) So finally started the VERY low rated Game of Thrones RPG from 2012 (IGN gave it a 4), that I got on steam sale for like $5 a while back.

To start with the graphics and voice acting are horrible, just bad.  It's a 2012 game, so after stuff like dragon age 2, mass effect 2, witcher 2, but looks and is acted worse then the predecessors to those games of it's time.  Graphical glitches all over the place, guys walking around with their hands in weapon position, but the weapon is missing, unimpressive textures and backgrounds, stuff like that.

All of that being said, it's a real shame, because it's actually not a bad game.  Plot is a pretty decent story kinda written between the lines of the books.  GRRM supposedly worked with them on the story.  The game is laid out kinda like the books where you have two separate POV's (full characters that you play as) going on that you switch between at cliffhanger points, very much like he does in the novels.  At the beginning they seem completely separate, but as the story gets laid out you see that they will somehow converge in the future, but you aren't completely sure in what way, allies or enemies by the time you meet.  Combat isn't bad, kinda feels like a less refined DA:2 combat, not as complex as the witcher, but lots of abilities that you need to use to survive the encounters.  Each character has a special ability set, one being a red priest has types of fire attacks, and the other a warg gets a war dog he can use.

So overall, unfortunate that this license was given to a studio (Cyanide Studios) that was completely not up to a major game like this.  Could have been pretty good in the hands of a bioware or obsidian.  Should probably finish it up this weekend.  I don't think most here would ever want to play it, but if anyone is looking for a cheap linear RPG during one of the steam sales and can still enjoy a game with some bad graphics, I think it's worth the $5.

Switched back to playing Overwatch.

I was playing BF1 but the technical problems are so bad that I couldn't do it anymore. The game frozen (had to power off my PS) twice, tanks were appearing as wire frames, and so on. Also, the skins/loot box and "upgrades" didn't really mean anything. This game is right on the cusp of being special but fails. Which makes it worse because you see you're climbing the mountain which makes the fall that much worse. So back to Overwatch. **Side Note: Titanfall 2 feels good to play but it's CoD like, in that all that matters is your K/D regardless of class or mode.

Overwatch feels even more balanced and feels great. The unfortunate part is the "proper" team composition is not exact. It is good overall so the game doesn't get stale but it means that you hear a lot of complaining from other players (because they are SUPER awesome and know best). I usually just listen to podcasts but tune in if the chat looks busy. It's not bad compared to Call of Duty chats but it doesn't make me want to put on a headset. But the game is so good that I can't say anything other than this is a must play game from 2016.

I have a question that I think I know the answer to, but I am not sure:

I Currently have 2 xbox ones in my house (1 in the basement and one in the family room). My basement one is marked as my home xbox because that is where my children play most, when they play on the one in the family room they sign in as me because I have the Gold and have purchased the downloaded games.

I bought another one yesterday to put in there room because I want my TV in the family room back, so there will be 3 in the house now.  Will I be able to play with my account if they are both playing on one or can we only have 2 running at the same time (one that is home and one with my account).

Hope this makes sense, not sure how else to explain it.

You can only be signed in on one of them so they won't be able to play as you on the one on the family room.

You can all play at once but you will have to create gamertags for each of them, you can only be signed in on one xbox at a time. Then you'll have to buy 2 of each game. It's what I have to do with 3 in my house. My oldest son's xbox is my home xbox so when I buy games it autodownloads on his and then I download it on mine in the basement. I have to then buy it from my youngest son for his xbox.

Been playing Stardew Valley.  This game is so deep.  I could see myself playing this for a loooong time.

I'm in the beginning of Summer, Year 1.  I have a solid farm producing various vegetables, a few chickens, and a cat.  I won a cool straw hat at the Egg Hunting Festival.  I've slowly been wooing Emily much to the chagrin of Clint who I totally ####-blocked at the Spring Festival by asking Emily to be my dance partner.  She's been sending me recipes and even said she dreamed about me so I think I have it in the bag.  I'll probably be marrying her soon.  #### you, Clint.  Meanwhile, Emily's roommate and super bimbo Haley hates my guts because I accidentally gave her some seaweed as her birthday gift.  She's been fawning over Alex, the jock.  Typical blonde slut.  I'll probably be given a quest to fund her abortion soon.  I also discovered that the mayor has been secretly sleeping with the portly veterinarian lady when I found his purple underwear in her bedroom.  He gave me some hush money to keep it a secret.  I wish I could pick a fight with Shane.  I gave him a beer and some JoJo cola as a gift and he still hates me.  I'm just trying to be friends with everyone but this guy is such a doosh.  I'm currently saving for the kitchen expansion and a barn. Good times.

Sounds fun

So Witcher 3 is by far better than 2 but it really is a slow game. 21 hours in and am only at level 8. Quests take forever and without a bow I'm forced to melee which means quick strike + dodge roll + quick strike, rinse and repeat. I thought I would be able to get a ranged weapon or use magic a la Dragon Age.

you should have a crossbow. It's not great though.

Yeah I do, it is in fact no great lol. I was hoping for a way to play with some distance, never been very good playing up close and personal. Oh well, it is much more enjoyable than 2. Definitely worth the 30 bucks that included both DLCs.

Just got done with assassins Creed black flag.  Badass.  Beat the story and maxed out the ship.  Killed all legendary ships.  Highly recommend if you like that bootay.

Moving on to dishonored.

I've only played three Assassins Creed games, but Black Flag was by far my favorite.  Great pirate simulator.  Somebody needs to pick up that concept and run with it, removing the tedious Assassins Creed elements.

Yes it could be so much more.  I was impressed with this game though.  I had no expectations going in so that helped

Are you my gaming twin? I'm working my through Black Flag with Dishonored 1 and Sleeping Dogs waiting in the wings.

I may have to speed through the story missions of AC:BF so I beat the game and move on with my life. I'm also slogging through Fallout4 (only lvl30) but I'm not going to rush that one.

Maybe.  Dishonored and dishonored 2 next for me.  Then a million star wars games

Of course. You're on my friends list worm. I just haven't played gears with you guys year cause you always have 5
We should definitely get a rocket private match going sometime. I enjoy 2v2 or 3v3 a lot but not 4v4. Also the rocket labs are quite meh. Worm, Uni plays rocket as well.

I am about 12 hours into Dark Souls 3 and I am completely hooked again for the 5th game in a row in this series.
Ooooooooooo, lucky you. Please share your experiences so I can re-live them through you. Can't wait to pick that one up again. I stopped playing at the last boss in NG++ and you know how hard it is to just jump right back in.

You play with Madshot? I haven't played since the summer but it's still loaded.
Played with Madshot last night on Rocket league.  Need a mic for the XBone.  I play at Challenger Elite on PC (with Maelstrom and sometimes IndyMark), but I'm only semi-pro on Xbone.  The cars feel heavier on console, for whatever reason, so I feel like I have to adjust.  Plus, I like trying out different cars on console that I don't play on the PC for variety sake.

Gonna see about getting a mic so we can play more often.  If you see me (TravJam) on and want to play some Rocket League, feel free to ask.

Starting to enjoy Witcher 3 more, still have some issues with it but overall it's much better. I have found bombs and alchemy along with the upgrades for alchemy. Still wish I had a better ranged weapon that was effective but bombs and the alchemy buffs are helping a lot.

I haven't played Rocket League in awhile (sorry @madshot31 and @SlaX!) but I own it on both PC and XB1 and I'd be up for a game whenever.

Just added you as a friend @Worm.  I'm IndyMark007 on XBL and Steam.

I'm sure I'm out of practice.  I need to pick it up again...

My first playthrough on easy/normal i didn't touch bombs or potions (except basic healing ones). Once you up the difficulty levels those become really important, as does finding diagrams for and crafting a set of Witcher armor and weapons.

I'm using the regular Griffin now and have the regular and upgraded Cat diagrams already. Need to find the upgraded Griffin diagrams though.

I just restarted again. I'm determined to finish it this time... middle of the bloody baron quest at the moment.

I've ranked out of everything but doubles and solo duel.  Maelstrom and I went awhile barely playing during the holidays.  And we also play some Battlefield 1 on PC.   It's hard to find time to play at night when I work 3 nights a week on 3rd.

I have both the base and upgraded diagrams but not close to the level yet. Think it's 18 min. I'm only at 11.
It's the one to shoot for though.  Gives elite agility, speed, Regen. Makes geralt an insane fighter

Played Battlefront a few times when it came out, put it down quickly and never picked it up again.  What is this survival mode?
Either single player or co-op you have wave after wave of increasingly more difficult enemies that you have to vanquish - 15 waves completes it. When you're on Master difficulty it gets wicked. But they're quite fun.

Freakin' shadow troopers.
