Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (4 Viewers)

I get that. Card games usually aren't my thing, I just picked up on this one quickly and enjoy it.  It's actually something I use to break up the monotony.  The dandelion quests in Novigrad bored me to tears, but I'd break it up with some gwent and move to the next phase.
I'm finishing my last deep dive into this game and just last night realized there is a slider that decreases the Gwent difficulty. I had given it up long ago after running into a couple characters that I couldn't beat. It's been fun picking it back up again.

Wahhhhh, seriously?  I never really have trouble beating anyone, it's basically spamming spy cards, but that's something I didn't know.  I did win the big tourney my last play through but it was a tough one.

I'm just not that good. Ermion or whatever his name is has a bunch of those cards that multiply themselves. At normal difficulties he was dropping 80-100 point rounds on me on a regular basis. I had no shame about cheating to get past him.

I really enjoy watching both twitch and youtube for video game content but damn there are times I feel so inadequate.

Last night I watched a video of a guy playing Dark Souls 3.  Not only was he doing a speed run, and in hard core mode (no deaths), he played THE ENTIRE GAME with out getting hit even once.   No shield blocking or parrying, just pure dodge.   Think about how hard some of the bosses are to beat much less not get hit and then multiply that for every boss in the game.

I sometimes think I am closer to Messi or Jordan than I am to these video game gods in terms of skills. :)

You should probably consider how much time these guys likely spend in front of a console. I think I'd rather have a life and be mediocre.

I spent most of today playing the Nioh demo.  (It closes tomorrow).  It's basically a Dark Souls clone, only you're a Japanese samurai.  The main level was fun as hell until I got to the boss.  Basically the boss two-hit kills you no matter what your level or gear, and she had about a billion hps so there is absolutely no margin for error.  And the camera blows.  Imagine facing a Dark Souls boss with like 25%of your max hp.

And after finally taking that boss down after an hour of attempts, you then immediately get another, even more bull####ty boss.  :|

Okay then.  Sale it is.

Edit: Okay, I liked this a lot more on day 2 after I learned about forging weapons and armor.  That evened the scales a lot.

Looking for recommendation on what to start next. Just finished FFXV (scathing final review tomorrow). Have a PS4. Only care about single player. Haven't played anything since Skyrim.

Last of us? Dark souls? Witcher? Fallout? BF1? Star wars? Mass Effect? Others?

Thanks.

Going through all the star wars games I got over winter sale with complete star wars saga.  Most of the older ones are garbage and a ##### to run on my laptop.  Finally found first decent one in force unleashed. Never played it back in 08 when it came out.  It's OK.

I'm also a single player only and would rank them as such:

FO4

Witcher

Both Tomb Raider games if you haven't played those

Dishonored 2 if you haven't played it

ME

BF1

Star Wars

Dark Souls (only here since it's insanely hard for me and I don't like the 3rd person camera angle)

No Last of Us in there? Thought it was game of the year and supposed to be great?

PS4, I'm not sure how much Mass Effect is on there but that would be a good series to tackle since the new one (Andromeda) is getting released in the next couple months.

Witcher 3 and FO4 are solid choices. Both have all their DLC (and mods for FO4) available now. Both games are large time dumps though.

BF1 is basically a group of small individual stories. If you're just playing single player then it's probably one you can wait on. It's new enough that it's not into the true bargain prices yet.

Dark Souls, I haven't played. I'm not sure which Star Wars you're referring too but I don't think the Battefront has a single player campaign. The new CoD (I heard) and Titanfall both have good single player but like BF1 you could probably wait on. The new Doom would be worth a look too.

The Last of Us is probably the obvious choice. Wasn't really my thing but there's no denying it's an excellent game. The Uncharted series is probably a decent choice too. The new Hitman episodic games are getting a lot of love.

There's so many good games that I would say to let price decide for you. Play the cheapest game first.

Thanks guys. Sent the wife in (she was going that way anyway!) to trade FFXV in for either Fallout or Last Of Us. We'll see what I get.

Edit: Fallout

For you console guys that enjoy action RPG's like Diablo, I can not recommend the game below enough.

It is the best aRPG I have ever played and I have played a TON of them over the years.  I have probably 1500 hours into this game over the years and it continues to evolve constantly.

You were the guy that I think introduced me to the game so many years ago I think :)

I don't know when the last time you played was but the amount of content they have added is just sick.  They have the best end game content of any game I have ever played in my life.

3.0 is going to bring act 5 and change up the whole difficulty scheme as well so plenty more content is to come.

Excellent choice. I tried to stay away from what I thought you would like but since you listed Skyrim as the last game you dug into, this would've been my recommendation.

As someone who hasn't really messed around with mods, mods add an entire new layer to the game. I welcome your posts here about it here but there's also a 116 page thread on here for Fallout 4 here too https://forums.footballguys.com/forum/topic/727944-official-thread-fallout-4-commonwealth-no-spoiler-zone/#comment-18085369

Got this for xmas and have played an unhealthy amount... on chapter 8.

I'm going to complain about a lot of stuff here. I'm enjoying the game but honestly think it is one of the weakest... worse than FFXII.

-Beautiful huge world but my god, far more time spent just trying to get places than actually playing the game. A simple hunt quest takes 15 minutes of walking, 3 minutes of fighting.

-Magic has taken a huge backseat. Hurting your teammates with spells? Weak. Also, no upgrading spells. Creating your own is cool but also kind of dumb. As an L1 player, you can easily create an L99 spell. Barely even need them anyway. No more strategy with haste, poison, shell, fog, poison, heal, etc. Really miss that.

-The combat is essentially, use a big spell right off the hop. Warp strike in, hit a couple times, warp out. Maybe use another spell if the opponent is weak to something and because you have max spells right from the start. Then just continue warp striking, using other teammates very weak abilities, and using potions when hurt. Very simplistic fighting. And when you get in a battle in a tight space? Ugg... can't warp out of harms way. Can't use a spell without crushing your teammates. Just mash warp strike and using potions. Can't even see what is going on half the time.

-Summons? Haven't seen one yet even though according to the wiki I should have two by now. They are 'random' in that you can't summon them but they come at certain times/places to help. Dumb.

-No 'book' on opponents weaknesses like in every single previous version.

-Fishing, cooking, pictures and survival are incredibly useless and seem thrown in at the last minute to have something else to level up. Haven't found a reason to do these other than for a few AP points.

-Some incredibly repetitive cut scenes. Every time you enter your car at night it is the same freakin spiel that monsters come out at night! Just stop already!

Done rambling for now.
Finished up the other day... ugg. As many complaints as I had about the 1st half pale in comparison to the 2nd half. WTF. This was not Final Fantasy. This was a bastardization of the series. A button masher that no longer required any planning or strategy. Magic not needed. Summons gone. WTF. The complaints about Chapter 13 are legit. I was seconds away from quitting and had I not already invested 75 hours, I would have. Unbelievably terrible.

Maybe it was just me (and my wife) but the story lost us. So much crap that we couldn't keep straight.

Final boss fight is an absolute joke.

When a speed runner can beat your game without ever progressing past L1, you done ####ed up.

3/10. Would not recommend.

Mods necessary/worth it? Or just play it as is?

I got one of the xwing games working through steam with that same bundle, runs pretty well, and I love playing those.  Would love a new 4K star wars flight game.

I've only played FO4. Does Obsidian do as good a job as Bethesda?

I think the only Obsidian game I've played is Armored Warfare which was basically a World of Tanks rip-off with modern tanks.
Obsidian has a bit of a checkered history. IMO New Vegas was much better than any of Bethesda's FO games. But, they also completely butchered KOTOR2. Their latest game, Tyranny, gets pretty good reviews but unfortunately it's a PC exclusive so I doubt I'll ever play it.

Obsidian did Fallout New Vegas, which is considered by many to be the best Fallout game to date, even over 4.

Is it good enough to go back and get if I see it on sale, or will it seem too dated now?
The graphics are about the same. There's no settlement building, and I'm pretty sure no upgrading weapons/etc (so all of the junk you find in the world is prettymuch useless). Leveling works a bit different - skills and perks are separate, with a perk point every other level.

But those are pretty minor. It's still the Fallout you know and love. If you like Fallout, get it.

There are weapon mods in FNV.

IIRC (and it is a long convoluted story), New Vegas had a lot of story and content taken from the cancelled Van Buren (code name for the original Fallout 3) which was almost completed before Interplay killed the studio. Then a bunch of the former employees started up Obsidian. One of the reasons New Vegas was so good was the story ideas came from some of the original creaters, IMO.

Different company, it would be similar to how FNV came out only 2 years after Fallout 3.  Elder Scrolls was released in 2011.
Doesn't matter to me what the reason is. I really want a new ES game and it looks like it will be a minimum of 7 years between them. :kicksrock:

I think graphics mods are very worth it, I haven't modded since skyrim, but basic vs upgraded graphics was a huge difference and well worth it right off the bat. I usually don't mess with any gameplay mods, never really felt the need too, though I know there are some who really like how it can change the game around slightly.

Stuff like lockpick/hacking mods, I may put in after a couple of days of playing as those "mini-games" just get old quickly to me.

Anyone excited about Resident Evil 7 that comes out tomorrow? I have no experience with the franchise but I am intrigued enough to try something new.
I'd recommend pretty much all of the RE back releases. Certainly 1,2, and 4 at least. If you've never played them, you've greatly missed out. I'd say:

1-2-4=A quality games

3-5=B quality games

0=C quality game

6=D quality game

I'm excited/concerned about RE7, seems like such a departure from what the series has been to date. That said, 6 was pretty awful, so maybe it'll be a step in the right direction, but it looks to have a lot of similarities to Amnesia and Outlast, and I didn't like either of those games. Then again, I still love the old 3rd person fixed camera angle early games.

The Resident Evil remake of the original on Gamecube was one of the scariest/best games I've ever played. With remasters/remakes all the rage, I think they just released in the last few years updated versions of most of these as digital downloads on all the major consoles (360/One, PS# & PS4.) Wish I had time to play them again although I'm sure the old controls would be maddening.

I agree with your rankings although I might rank Zero as a D quality game. About the only positive thing I remember about that one was the advanced graphics (for the time) which pale in comparison to stuff these days.

That is probably fair. I haven't played Zero since it first came out, and I remembered it to be ok, but maybe its a D game. I liked the ability to drop things and come back to them, instead of needing to go back to an item box, when you are just going to immediately use whatever you are trying to pick up (herbs, ammo etc.)

I've replayed all the others in the last 2-3 years. Also played Revelations 1 and 2, as well as Code Veronica. Code Veronica is a B game for me, and I'd say the Revelations games are C's, but I'd probably take them both, or at least the first one, over Zero.

1, 2, and 4 are all in my top-20 games ever made.
