Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (1 Viewer)

I'm actually impressed with how well thought-out Horizon Zero Dawn's story is.  I mean, the basic premise behind the game (primitive tribes fighting robot dinosaurs/animals) is so silly and over-the-top that it was played for laughs in Far Cry: Blood Dragon.  But I will give Guerilla credit.  They went all-in and constructed a pretty compelling backstory for how things got to this point.  It is not without a few plot holes and cringey characters, but it does make sense and has the modern benefit of being much darker than one might have expected at the outset.

Edit: Not to say that it is Shakespeare or anything.  But it's pretty solid and sophisticated by video game standards.

Off. However, all my saves for Be a Pro and Franchise started messing up. It just sends me back to the start of every season when I load them.
Have you reinstalled the game and patches?

i only play BAP and I'm 2.5 seasons in testing sliders. I think I came up with nearly perfect ones if you are interested in trying them yourself

No I haven't tried that yet. Absolutely, I want the sliders.

Sure. It will take a little time to type up.

I had a similiar issue with my saves just disappearing so I deleted the game and all data for it then reinstalled everything and haven't had the issue again.

my sliders are for hybrid controls. Do you use those or advanced controls?

Whatever the stock control setup is. I keep it like that so if I play online or against a buddy I'm not all messed up.

Recently built a PC (nothing impressive, kept the budget low on my first try) and I'm excited to catch up on basically a decade of games that I missed, maybe even longer. I've never been a computer gamer other than a brief period when I was a kid and I was obsessed with Age of Empires 2 and one of the old Total War games, as well as Balder's Gate 1 &2. Games like that are already filling up my Steam wishlist.

Really excited to check out these games so far:

Wasteland 2, Mount and Blade: War Band, Sins of a Solar Empire, and a whole bunch of Civilization games and Total War games that I'm trying to decide from. Plus some newer stuff like Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Banished, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile.

What do you guys recommend from this list, or games like this? My desktop isn't a potato but its nothing impressive, but I'm under the impression I can run all of this stuff plenty well anyways.

Is there much worry in the compatibility of the older games with Windows 10, if I get them through Steam?
Big fan of Mount and Blade: Warband.

Still playing that on occasion

What the hell, I just read that Warband was actually fairly recently released on PS4. Was that well-received? Can't believe I never heard about it, since I've always wanted to play it on PC. I'll still be going with Steam though

Path Of Exile is the best of its genre IMO.  The game has so much depth that after almost 1500 hours, there are still a ton of things I have not done.

The game is coming out with a massive expansion soon.  Best to start fresh when that comes out.  I would recommend a download to see how it runs on your computer.  The game is free to play.

I am currently playing Grim Dawn and having fun with it.  It is a much smaller game in every way from POE but you can still sink plenty of hours into it if you enjoy the ARPG genre.

Finally upgraded to a PS4 (I've been mostly gaming on a new PC). My son got me the PS4 for Father's Day, with the game Horizon. Loving it so far. Great story. It's so engaging my family sat there watching me play all day yesterday.

I'm definitely getting The Show 2017 this weekend. You guys recommend anything else?

Not an exclusive to PS4, but I feel like everyone owes it to themselves to try Rocket League if they haven't. It's probably the best "I've got 10 mins to kill" game I have ever played.

Is there a long term component to this game, like a franchise mode in Madden?

I finally finished Little Nightmares and it is not that great...

The game is actually very short, but I restarted it like 3x because after 20-30 mins I got bored with it.  I should have just kept going because the entire game is like 2.5 hours.  I guess I didn't know exactly what I was getting into, because it's not really a puzzle game. I wanted Limbo or Inside which are both amazing (especially Inside). This is more of a stealth / chase type game. After realizing that, I did like it more but it's still not my favorite.  I might go back and try some of the achievements - there's 1 you get for beating the game without dying in under and hour. I honestly feel like that wouldn't be too hard unless I miss a jump. Also there's a big problem where you're moving in a 3D space in a 2d game.  By that I mean, you'll be moving forward and think you're ok before you fall of a ledge because you're not lined up properly. This happens a lot.

Pros: Cool atmosphere, cool art style, entertaining chase sequences

Cons: puzzles suck, very short, frustrating 3D movement.

6/10

Not a franchise mode, you're basically just playing casual or ranked multiplayer. The game does have bots to play against AI, but it's better just playing with others.

Its extremely addicting.

It's basically a $10 game that involves rocket-powered cars playing soccer.  And it is addictive as hell.  I haven't played in a while, but it has to be one of the more commercially successful indie games to come along in a long time.

Pillars was excellent; also look at Divinity Original Sin.  Tyranny had me going for a while then lost me.  Too many puzzles that just had me looking for a walkthrough after 5 minutes.

Civ6 is the most intricate game I've ever played, and am still playing.  Resource hog, though - check the specs.  Hundreds of mods in the Steam Workshop (Brothels!  Dennys!).

No issues with W10 playing through Steam.

If you're really, as in REALLY interested in PC strategy games, check out what they call "Grognard games".  They are incredibly detailed strategy games that promote historical accuracy, and depth over graphics.  So you'll spend an hour setting up your troops, another hour coordinating supply lines, then another hour looking for a hole to exploit in the enemy's front line, and that's just one turn.  Here's an example.

I got the Morrowind expansion for Elder Scrolls Online and I'm amazed at how good the questing has been compared to other MMOs.  I actually care about the story and lore and they did a very good job recreating Morrowind overall.  It really takes me back.

So I've been reading that the Steam summer sales aren't what they used to be, and GOG is on the last day or two of its big sale, so I just jumped on some stuff there rather than gamble that Steam would beat their sales.

Got:

Mount and Blade: Warband for 4.99

Banished for 4.99

Grim Dawn for 12.49

Pillars of Eternity + DLC for 17.99

Divinity 2 Directors Cut for 2.99

And they threw in a couple freebies I guess (Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Rebel Galaxy).

Not a bad haul for less than $45.00.

I'm liking this PC gaming thing already.

does this have any relation to the Divinity Original Sin series?

Same company (Larian), same series, older game. Set in the same world (Rivellon). 3rd person action RPG though, rather than isometric turn-based strategy RPG. They totally reinvented themselves with Original Sin and the upcoming OS2.

Does ESO require a monthly subscription? If not, which one is the full game with expansions? There are like 17 versions of that damn game.

Subscription is optional but gives you a few perks, the best being a crafting bag that has unlimited space and stores all your crafting ingredients. That alone is worth it if you intend on crafting.

Im just as confused as you are about versions. I originally bought the one that includes the thief guild and assassin guild DLCs whichever that is and then bought Morrowind separately last week.  I feel all of the DLC content I bought has been worth it.

The thing to keep in mind is that it's more MMO than it is Skyrim. But that said, it has the best questing system and lore than any other MMO I've ever played.

My Steam Sale update:

Saints Row 2 - $2.49 (big fan of 3, 4 & Gat out of Hell so, why not?)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 - $7.99 (lots of people talk about Castlevania as a ground breaker so, why not?)

Shadow of Mordor GOTY - $3.99 ($3.99 SERIOUSLY? Maybe my best Steam sale value purchase ever. My rig can't even play SoM but I couldn't pass up that price)

Resident Evil 4 - $6.79 (Never played the series but IIRC this is another one that people in here talk about as the pinnacle of the franchise)

Rebel Galaxy - $5.99 (I have no idea, but it was on my wishlist so apparently I researched it at some point so, why not?)

Singularity - $7.49 (see Rebel Galaxy)

Shadow Complex - $4.94 (Someone in here talked this up earlier and I thought the footage I saw was incredible. Excited about this one)

Galactic Civilizations III - $4.94 (this is the upgrade from II price not the stand alone game price, but I had II, haven't played it, so, why not).

Seven games so far at an average price of $5.58 per game.  Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Just got the PS4 setup in the game room.  A little overwhelmed by the amount of stuff it can do.   Movies, TV, games, download games.  Why would anyone buy a game in a store anymore?  Last time I played PS anything was when Metal Gear Solid was out.  I don't guess a new MGS has come out since PS3?    Anywho, I saw a bunch of apps to download, and movies to watch, but the boys wanted to start playing their GTA game.

I loved MGS games, played a little Final Fantasy.   So anything you guys can give an opinion on games, apps, settings what have you TIA.

Oh, got the playstation live for 12 months today so everyone can play with their friends online.

There's a new Metal Gear out last year.  Good game.

The reason people would buy a game in a store still is because they can sell the disc when they're done with the game after a month or two.  I don't know how they get away with selling digital games at full price.

I am sure someone more tech savy than I has come up with a way to burn games to a usb or whatever and just swap games that way?

Discs often go on sale or can be bought used and you can sell them back to the store. Digital downloads are almost always sold at full price

The only benefit to digital downloads is I dont have to get up off my ### and take the 5 seconds to switch games if I want to.

you are welcome.  Maybe my favorite PS4 game so far, even with the kinda jacked up incomplete story, and for $22 right now that's a steal.

Ok man I haven't played in awhile. I purchased the online for a year 59.99.  There will be 3 of us using this  for online play.   I was on with support for over an hour because the rep couldn't figure out how all 3 of us can play on the same machine with different profiles using the same 59.99 online access.   At one point the guy stated that he thought we had to have a separate account for each of us 59.99 x3.  I was like  wtf 180 bucks for the year?   Anywho that guy couldn't help me.  I will try again tomorrow.

Between GOG sale (now over) and the Steam summer sale, I added these to the haul above:

FTL: Advanced Edition for 2.99

Iceland Dale 2: Complete for 3.99

Medieval 2: Total War for 4.99

Age of Empires 2 HD for 4.99

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion for 7.99

I'm probably done for now. 12 games ranging from really good to classic for about $65.

Although I have to admit that Torment: Tides of Numenera at $22 less than 6 months after release is calling to me big time. But seeing as I've got hundreds of hours of cheap gaming ahead of me with the rest of this stuff I'll probably wait until the next sale.

I played the first Medieval: Total War a huge amount when I was a kid and read that it's a better version of that with tons of new additions plus better graphics, and still 10 years later considered potentially the strongest of all the Total War games. Idk if that's true for everyone but I know I'll get tons of nostalgic fun for that $5, seems like crazy good value.

I get why Steam summer sales aren't as exciting to serious gamers anymore without the flash sales and without the newer AAA games dropping crazy low for the most part any more, but for someone like me who is just getting back into PC gaming and doesn't already own all the older classics from the past decade+ this is like Xmas come early.

That game rocks.  Just bought it myself.  You will love it

Also got civ 6, res evil 7, and wolfenstein old blood.  I'm good for the next few months

thanks!

Let me know what you think of Grim Dawn
Loving it so far. Totally get the "spiritual successor to Diablo 2" thing now, I'm already preferring it to Diablo 3.

I started as a Nightblade, just hit level 10 and I'm glad I can respec (within my class) pretty cheap. Gotta decide when the right time is to branch out into my 2nd class, I guess since it just became available to me. The number of builds you could come up with this game is crazy, and I haven't even touched the Devotion stuff yet!

I am running a pure nightblade build so far on my first character.  Level 61.

Don't forget to add your components to every piece of gear.  I made the mistake early thinking I was suppose to save them til later.

The Devotion is a blast but complicated.  I can see why preplanning your build is so important.  But for this first character I am expecting to make a ton of mistakes.
