Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

I didn't realize there was a new Sniper Elite game coming out. Cool. I'm about ready for another stealth-action game.
Sniper Elite 6?? SWEET More Nazi hunting!!!!
Comes out next week. You know it's going to be good because they apparently skimped on marketing to devote as many resources to gameplay as possible.

This goes directly on my Wishlist.

I always thought these were kinda gimmicky -almost flash games. Might have to check out a recent one.

Not at all. I played the last one on Game Pass. It was very good.

Played last sniper 2 or 3.

Last Sniper 5 was free with my PS5 account.

They fixed a lot of the glitches and it's really well done. Having a blast. I'm not very stealthy but try
LOVE Sniper Series!! 3/4/5 are great. And each one improved on the previous one. Fun times killing Nazi's.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched two days ago. It hit a peak of ~77K concurrent players on Steam over the past 24 hours. For comparison, Baldur's Gate 3, which launched over a year ago, peaked at ~73K concurrent players during those same 24 hours. It's all-time peak hit 870K.

So in just the second half of 2024, we've seen the failure of a new open world Stars Wars game by Ubisoft, an 9-figure GaaS by Sony, and a new Dragon Age title by Bioware. And the new Assassins Creed was so obviously doomed that it got pushed back to spring.

These are all massive, high-profile AAA or AAA+ titles by major companies, and they're failing one after another, some in truly spectacular fashion. Concord, for example, now probably holds the record for Biggest Videogame Flop of All Time, depending on how you measure that. (I'm sure the gameplay was better than ET, but more people bought and played ET.) In previous years, each of these big fall releases would have been titles that consumers were eagerly anticipating, and studios would have been hoping to position their titles for GOTY consideration. Instead, the company that made Concord has already been shut down, Bioware is probably done, and it wouldn't shock me if Ubisoft failed next year. I know Ubisoft is big, but I don't know that they're big enough to survive Outlaws and AC Shadows.

This industry needs a good controlled burn to clear out the deadwood, and it looks like we're finally getting it. What I'm hoping to see next are a few things:
  • Less ideology crammed into games. I don't want to be preached at, and religious fundamentalists generally don't produce good creative products. (See Christian movies, Christian television, and Christian music -- this stuff is painful).
  • Far fewer $200M+ titles. If you're making a game that expensive, it's too big to fail, which means the people calling the shots get way too risk-averse. Ditch the paint-by-numbers Ubisoft model. Ditch the paint-by-numbers Bethesda model. This stuff was innovative 10-20 years ago. It's played out now. It's slop.
  • On a related note, AAA+ games increasingly rely on in-game monetization to make back their production costs. In-game monetization sucks. Another reason to make games smaller.
  • Bring back the 12-16 hour single player game. You know who likes those games? Adult male gamers, who have disposable income to spend on games.
Larian Studios created a fantastic single-player RPG that genuinely moved the medium forward. FromSoft has a long track record of the same. Studios can do this if they want to. Or they can keep setting money on fire. It's up to them I guess.
So Dragon Age: The Veilgaurd missed its sales expectations by about 50%, which caused EA stock to fall about 17% today.

Disclaimer: If you played DA:V and liked it, and you don't own stock in EA, great. It's a single player game so there's no immediate reason for you to care about sales. You got to enjoy the game. Thumbs up.

With that out of the way, this was predictable. And we've had a bunch of these in 2024. It was hyperbole a few years ago, but "Go woke, go broke" is literally true today, and you can point to several high-profile examples from just this year. I have a hypothesis that any game that was in development in 2020 is just DOA at this point. GTA6 is the obvious counter-example, but I have fairly low expectations for that one too, because there's no way a GTA game made it through that development cycle unscathed.
Yeah the Wokeness in DAV was extremely obvious. And one of the lead designers I believe is a Transgender. So to their demise they killed the buzz of this....fantastic game. I don't make a big deal outta all that crap.....but I get the sentiment of it being forced down people's throats ad-nausea the last 4 years.

Things are going to change in that regard. And that is how this country and most of the world works.

Money talks and BS walks. Woke is proving to be a destroyer of business. And big Corporate America is finally taking notice....for better or for worse.

I just play the games....if they are great....I don't let that crap ruin my enjoyment. I just roll my eyes and move on.
Yeah. I mean the woke stuff does have an impact. Sure, the roader way of people int he culture war and all that crap. But also on me.

Int he same way a trans person, I think rightfully, wants to be represented and feel like it's part of a story and they get to be a part of it and how cool is that, I don't want or need it shoved down my throat. It's such a hot button thing in the real world that the last thing I want is to wrestle with it in my escapism! In my every day life it' mostly a "you do you, it's not affecting me, live your life" but that's kind of the point. Go live your life!

In DA:V specifically, I think they could have done a better job of letting you opt-in with the stuff in your character selection, but the little I have seen makes it seem like the Taash character has it come up a bunch and you have to deal with it throughout the story regardless of your protagonist choices. Now, perhaps that's internet reviews making a mountain out of a molehill, but it's just one more thing to deal with. I haven't bought the game yet and I spend like 10 hours a day just on the couch with a newborn - this is prime time when a game from a franchise I love should be exciting and awesome, but instead I'm cranking through a Pokemon game and revisiting DA:Inquisition.

Idk. Just seems like whoever is in charge made a poor decision. Like 1% of people are trans. We don't suddenly need much more than 1% of our media and entertainment to be all about that. Representation is important for people, but when you overdo it, you make the world people are excited to play in no longer what they were excited about.

Yeah that's how I ended up playing five. I was googling games that were coming out this year and the new sniper elite popped up and in the review it said it would be hard to improve on one of the best games in number five and then I saw five was free for me and I'm glad I downloaded it

Corrinne Busche Game Director for Dragon Age Veilguard no longer works for Bioware or EA. Some say she was fired, some say resigned, either way she is gone.

Yep…..

:Sehorn:

Just got my kid a gaming pc. He wants to start dabbling in Unreal Engine. But he's gotta come up with the other half of the money before he gets to mess with it. In the meantime I added Steam and want to test it out so I'll be watching this thread as well. I haven't really done PC gaming since Quake 2 circa 1998. Have any of you played the Ghost of Sashimi? I've seen great things about it and thought it would be a nice start. I'll add Subnautica too. I was eyeing it on Switch for a bit.
DO you mean Tshushima?

If so one of the best games ever done imo

Unless there is a raw fish game I'm not aware of ... ;)
Hahaha and agree Ghost of Tsushima was a top 5 for me all time non sports title.

Loved it start to finish.
Downloading now.

It doesn't take much. A couple of 10.2% beers, a recommendation from a FBG on a Friday night. DONE!

Now that I have all the DLC I've been replaying Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The prologue is LOOOOONNNGGG. I had to restart a few times since I kept dying. There was some weird glitch or something and there was a Cuman right in front of me. Didn't really like A Woman's Lot and I gave up but I suck at stealth and archery (this is NOT Skyrim archery). Can't wait for 2 but I wasn't going to get it early anyways.

I've been playing the original now too. I really like the game, despite you being pretty low power. Like you say, this isn't skyrim archery or combat or anything like that.

I'll wait a bit on 2 to see what QOL upgrades they did - I'm about 60-70 hours into the first but I'll jump to 2 if it's a little more day-to-day friendly. Like can I please wash the blood off my sword in a stream so I don't panic the gate guards every time I walk into town?

I have such a love-hate relationship with this game. I really like the freedom, but I am crippled by the anxiety of completing the time sensitive quests. I have serious FOMO when I’m in the middle of one quest and then there’s an alert says I only have X amount of days to start/finish a different quest.

Also, as much as I like Henry, I’d like to roll my own character and role-play that person

Finished Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom last week. It's short and pretty fun, plenty of the usual inventive Zelda puzzles. The twist is that you play as Zelda, and you can conjure blocks to jump on and rocks to climb, but also, when a monster dies, you can learn how to conjure that, too. So the "combat" actually is just you conjuring monsters to fight other monsters. The drawback is that you end up with probably 100-200 things you can summon, and sometimes you need to summon a specific kind of monster to solve a puzzle, and it's not that obvious because you've got 100 things to choose from. But it was a fun diversion.

Yea those for sure. I read that not many quests are actually timed, but they sure feel like it from the dialog.

And while I also realize the realism/simulation aspect is a draw, I'm kind of missing "power" too, especially after 40 / 50 hours. There's only so many times cowering from a group of three armored enemies is fun - at some point, I want to be all "eat fireball, maggots!!"

Gave this a shot (no pun intended) and I absolutely suck. First time playing the franchise.

I think I'm pretty decent but there's definitely a learning curve. Sometimes I'll just hold up in a corner and empty everything I own in ammo as guys just rushing. It's probably a bit of a cheat but I'll just sit there for a half hour lol

Took me over two hours to finish Mission Two on the new Sniper Elite.

Playing on Sharpshooter and everything on medium difficulty.

I looooooove this game and series.

I really take my time. I am a stealthy lethal killer. Love doing lethal take downs. So satisfying.

Not sure I want to drop 60 bucks on the game since I literally just finished the other one. But one thing I feel like I do super great at finding everything on the map and then I get done and it was like 12 of 25 things found LOL.... I have definitely waited at the top of a stairwell for 45 minutes. Just picking guys off as they are searching for me

FWIW- The Review I saw for the newest one was that it felt like a DLC for the last one. Said it was fine just not worth the full price.

It’s the same exact formula of the last 2.

And I love the formula.

Baptism of Fire was so much easier than I remember but this being my second play through I'm a tad better now but I still suck. I feel like I cheated a bit since I did some grave robbing and got me some better armor. I only died twice but it took me about 6 tries since my AI allies kept dying. I did cheese the boss fight. I haven't clicked on any of the reviews since I don't want to be spoiled but it seems like 2 is a pretty solid game and I might just break down and buy it.

Warhorse had made some live action videos to promote the game so I've been watching those.

Building a new PC on Thursday. My GTX 1080 Ti is finally crapping out. Skimping on the video card for now (well, kinda. Still a 4060) but otherwise getting back to a gaming beast.
Went with an AM5 build with the 9800X3D and 64GB of DDR5 6400 RAM. Skimping meant picking up a generic MSI 4060 8GB for now while I watch the prices on the 4070 Ti Super. I'd like to get a card with 16GB of VRAM so that this build will hold for a solid 5+ years. With the RTX 50 series out and driving nerds crazy, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping to snag one if they drop in price. Of course, waiting could just end up costing more so it's a weird tightrope walk for now. I'd say it's 50-50 that I get screwed but there's only a 10% chance of that happening.

I could easily overclock this rig if I ever wanted to. It idles at ~35C, plays video intense games at ~50C, and only got to ~70C during the final stress tests I ran it through. Nothing is overclocked now except how things are out of the box. I might see what I can do someday but for now it's fine.

DLSS 3 (or 3.5, I'm not an expert here but I know it's not 4) is amazing. Cyberpunk already looked incredible without it on and I was getting ~55-60 FPS in 4k. With it on (and maxed out settings in 4k), I am getting ~105-110 FPS. The game looks remarkably sharp and I don't have any issues with choppiness or lag or whatnot while running around Night City. I turned crowds up to max for a while and started some good ol' fashion serial killing and it was still outstanding. I'm sure some dorks will say that this and that don't look right but I haven't noticed. The bummer is that adult videos on websites illegal in Florida still view the same.

:kicksrock:

So...pretty sweet. And nerdy.

(Note to motherboard manufacturers: Name your damn RAM slots differently. Every other build I've done, you go slots 1 & 3 first from left to right, closest to the CPU first. In order, they are labeled A1 (far left), A2(1st), B1, and B2(1st) on this board. I tossed the two sticks in A1 and B1 and the machine didn't start. Took me a solid five minutes of panic before I saw the RAM error light on the board and slowly put together the problem. Kinda the idiot here but for the love of dogs and all that is holy, motherboard manufacturers can [FPGs has redacted this content] with their naming conventions.)
