Skyrim, definitely. You really won't find anyone out there that didn't love it's predecessors (Oblivion, Morrowind).

I've enjoyed Rage so far through two missions on Nightmare. AI to me is very good. You can't run and gun the whole time, imo. You have to find cover and they find cover as well.If there was more customization, Rage probably would of gotten a higher score with critics. By the way, Rage has the most amazing console graphics ever. Just looks unreal in HD. The story does feel generic, but the fun factor makes up for it.Overall, great time waster until the other great games come out.

If your on the fence with Rage, wait until black friday.

Rage is one that I definitely want to play sometime, but not enough that I can't wait for a price drop, especially considering all the other stuff that's coming out.

What I really don't get about Rage is why they didn't do a shooter-based multiplayer side. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not one of these people who thinks that all games have to have multiplayer. SP-only games are totally fine. But this game does actually have multiplayer already; it's just this weird vehicle-only thing. How can you make the multiplayer side of a FPS and not have TDM, FFA, etc?

Borderlands did very well with a great co-op MP component without any TDM, etc at all.

It reminds me of Bioshock 2 tacked on multiplayer imo, which faded away pretty quickly.

Before Skryrim comes out, I'm going to try to play through Oblivion a second time.

Did anyone here create an alchemist? (My first playthrough was as a stealthy wood elf with some basic magic and minimal melee.)

For everyone that has Dark Souls: I am curious to know how the combat is.

Is the combat like Dragon Age where you just tell the character what spells/attacks to do?

Or is it like Oblivion where you hit a button to swing your sword cast a spell?

I find the former combat style boring and was wondering if someone could explain it to me. Thanks in advance.

I posted a video earlier in the thread that shows a ton of game play. It is based on Demon Souls and in no game have I ever played did I feel more in control of the action. The melee fighting was as good as it gets. In terms of your specific question it is much more like Oblivion.

Just to elaborate a little, most people hold a weapon in their right hand and a shield in their left hand. On the PS3 controller, R1 does a standard attack with your right-hand weapon, and R2 does a heavy but slower attack. L1 puts up your shield to block. L2 does a shield bash which I almost never use but which I think you can use to break your opponent's block. Every time you throw an attack and every time you block an attack, you use up stamina which is a little green bar near your HP bar. Wheny you run out of stamina, you can't do anything for a few seconds, forcing you to back off and recover. Each weapon uses a different amount of stamina per attack (daggers, not much -- giant axes that are as big as you are, a lot more), and they also require different amounts stamina to block. Attack speeds also vary. Different shields vary in their ability to stop income damaage without the player getting stunned. In other words, it's not button-mashing like God of War. The basic mechanics of melee combat are simple, but stamina management means that you have to keep a close eye on what's going on. Melee battles also play out quite differently when you have different gear. The combat techniques that you use with a spear aren't the same that you would use with a claymore.

Started playing Infamous last night. Cool concept and environment, but seems like it's going to be really repetitive.
It is. Not that it isn't a good game, but after a while I wanted to tell the citizens that if the Trashmen were putting monitoring devices on their building, maybe they should try taking the law into their own hands.

I have never played a RPG. If I were to buy one of the new ones, should I go with Dark Souls or Skyrim:popcorn:
Of those two I’d pick Skyrim, however, RPG's can be pretty love them or hate them, so since Skyrim is probably going to be full price for a while, I'd pick up something from the last couple years on the cheap and see how you like them. I'm sure everyone would have their recommendations but I’d suggest Fallout: New Vegas, or Mass Effect if you want more of a shooter type RPG, or Dragon Age: Origins if you want a swords/magic build a party and quest with it game.
Thanks. Oblivion is on sale for 20 bucks at gamestop. Ill pick it up before spending the cash on Skyrim

Be aware though that for many people, a fun aspect of an rpg is the building and leveling of ones character. Oblivion employed one of the worst leveling systems I have ever used. If you play and that detracts you, know that Skyrim supposedly returned to a slightly more traditional levelling system.

Agreed and to add that environment also affects your weapon choice(thin corridors make some weapons almost useless). Also the enemies all have different AI's which means you need to learn and study their movements so that you can best attack them. For an action game, it really made you think. Unfortunately while you are planning, some usually cleaves you in half :)

I remember my daughter was watching me play this years ago and was watching me hop like a bunny constantly and thought it was cute. When a 7 year old girl thinks a hard core rpg is cute, you screwed something up :)

I'm about to fire up Oblivion for the first time in an hour or so. But I got the game of the year edition with knights of 9 and shivering isles also.

Which game do I start with

No, you just play Oblivion. No need to choose anything, those addons are just additional things (quests, etc) integrated right into Oblivion.

Started playing Dark Souls. Pretty someone in my house will feel my rage if I play this too long.
Did you play Demon Souls? What ever you do, don't get frustrated, the game is designed such that you die more often than you are likely used to on a normal setting for most games.
No I did not. I have read about the difficulty. and it seems I die most times out of rushing to get back to the boss that spanked me. I gotta start over though, I killed a couple of NPCs by mistake err... frustration.

It might be painful but give it ten or so hours of game play before you give up. You will eventually find your rhythm.

I put a slightly embarassing number of hours in Demon's Souls so I might not be well-placed to make an unbiased assessment, but I think Dark Souls actually is harder that the original (assuming you're new to the franchise).

First of all, you can't start as a Royal and rely on Soul Arrow + regerating mana to get you through the early game. It seems like no matter what your starting class is, you're going to have to master the melee system very early on or you're just not going to get very far. Spells are very slow to cast in this game and it's easy for enemies to interrupt you while you're casting. I honestly cannot even imagine how anybody beats Capra Demon using sorcery or pyromancies. Then again, you can get a really good sword very early in the game by shooting off the dragon's tail. I never bothered to get this, but it should allow you one- or two-shot all standard enemies in the early areas. But you'll still have to learn to melee.

Second, the bosses in this game are way harder than Demon's Souls. Almost all of the bosses in the original were either preposterously easy to beat (has anybody EVER died to Fool's Idol?) or could be cheesed/glitched. There were literally only two or three bosses that might reasonbly give somebody trouble. I haven't gotten that far yet -- I quit last night right before the first boss in Blighttown -- but so far most bosses have forced you to fight them more or less straight-up. No more running up right to Leechmonger and one-hitting him with firestorm or pelting Maiden Astraea with arrows from a position of complete safety. You actually have to fight them like a man. There are still environmental exploits, but nothing like the Maneater fog gate glitch or getting Flamelurker stuck behind a rib cage.

It also seems to me that new players are going to have a harder time reaching the first good farming area in Darkroot Garden behind the door that requires 20,000 souls to unlock. It was pretty easy to get to the first reaper in Demon's Souls, and then you could just murder that guy over and over again to level up. This spot is a little more challenging to reach though it's still not too bad. This area also makes it easy to improve your gear since you're so close to a blacksmith who sells upgrade materials.

So far, this game is pretty awesome.

It wasn't the right implementation but Bethesda is on the right track with the leveling system. Absolutely ridiculous that you spend your time hacking and slashing and then at level up you can put all those points into magic or something. In order to increase in skill you should have to practice/perform the skill IMO.

For those that will be getting Batman Arkham City, KMart will be giving a $30 gaming coupon and a free T-shirt with the game. The coupon is usually good for a few weeks and can only be used on gaming stuff. Got to be a member of their reward thing. Free to sign up.

Fired up Rage last night. Put about 5 hours of game time in and feel like I barely made a dent in the single player. I feel like I'm spending way too much cash on ammunition.

Friend lent me Red Dead Redemption a few weeks ago. I put in about 35 hours on it so far. Completed the main story, and most if not all of the side quests. Not a bad game but nothing I would ever pay money for as I don't like these short type games where you have no ability to make your character stronger. Outside of the animals, there was no almost difference in the AI of any of the human fighters. Very nice graphics and the shooting mechanics in the game were good.

I am starting the multi-player now and have a few hours in on that. I suck at multi-player games though so I will likely just grind this character up to level 50 and be done with the game unless I get bored at the grind.

Have you tried the multiplayer? I got Rage but its taking a back seat to Dark Souls right now and I have a feeling it wont see the inside of my xbox for some time.

Just re-installed this myself over the weekend and am finding mods for it this week because there are some pretty cool ones out there, are you on PC or console?I originally didn't recommend Oblivion because it has a pretty complicated leveling system that you need to pay attention to when you are building your character and playing the game. When you level up, the game levels up also, if you don't get enough bonuses when you level, you don't keep up with the game and it starts to get really hard. You can stay on top of that by "correctly" working the leveling system, or by just turning the difficulty slider in the menu down when you think things are getting impossible.Basically, when you level up you get to up I think 3 of your stats. When you choose a stat to increase, it will increase between 1 and 5 points depending on how many skill levels of that stat's associated skills you increased. To get the 5 you need to increase 10 points in any of the 3 associated skills. If you aren't at least getting a +3 bonus almost every time you increase a stat, eventually you will start to see things get difficult. If you want a detailed explanation, I believe there is still a full oblivion thread that talks about it in more depth, or it's all over the web.Hope you enjoy the game because besides the quirks with leveling up, I think it's a GREAT game and I’m excited to get one more play though before Skirim.

I have not. One thing I kind of have a problem with is that it seems more accurate to use open sites, gunning from the hip almost than to look down the barrel of the pistol or shotgun. I just bought the pistol scope before turning it off last night, so maybe that makes a difference.Haven't tried multiplayer yet, but maybe I put a bigger dent in the single player than I thought, after reading a couple reviews this morning. Still have only used the first disc, can't believe it came on 3, my first experience with a 360 game on mulitple discs.

Graphics are stunning, and while the gameplay is fun, I could care less about the characters or story.

I liked The Elder Scrolls but I thought the Oblivion gates were tedious. They could have changed them up a bit and given them different themes.

I agree. I'm playing through a second time as a battle mage and am not looking forward to closing those gates.

Agreed... if they just wouldn’t have them randomly pop up everywhere it wouldn’t be so bad, if it was just the 5 or so for each town, and make them a little different not too bad. Every time I accidently found one i just felt the need to close it, couldn’t stay away!

Finally got around to playing Demon's Souls this weekend.

If you're easy to anger, avoid this game, heh. I just finally got thru 1-1 then got roasted by the Dragon, in what I assume is 1-2. Frustrating, but really fun. Started as a Wanderer, but decided to roll a Hunter and enjoying the bow much more.

Anyone have any good hints/tips for a noob in DS? I've already checked out the wiki pages and such, but I'm definitely up for other help, esp. on what order to do this game in :)

At some point, I realized you can just sprint through the Oblivion gates and just run by all the bad guys. It's much easier that way. But yeah I also just steered away from them when they popped up.

Are you saying you basically just avoid the random gates or do you mean you just sprint straight to the sigils? Those spiral towers are very annoying. I think I'll just skip the gates that are not vital to the story line.

Agreed... if they just wouldn’t have them randomly pop up everywhere it wouldn’t be so bad, if it was just the 5 or so for each town, and make them a little different not too bad. Every time I accidently found one i just felt the need to close it, couldn’t stay away!
Are you guys on PC or Console? I just reinstalled with PC and am looking into a lot of the custom mods available. Anyone have any experience with some of the more extensive mods, like full texture packs, UI overhauls, and such? Supposedly some of these take the looks of the game to a new level.

I loved Daggerfall and Oblivion, but I actually just found myself cancelling my Skyrim preorder 15 minutes ago. Given my family, work and church obligations, there is just such limited time I have to play games anymore. I have BF3 as a given, and paid for Diablo 3 as well. There is just no time for Skyrim for now. I will wait till it is $20 and we are 12 months down the road, perhaps. Kind of sad when you continually realize you just cannot do it all. :(

HATED the spiral towers. Also reminds me of how sometimes the arrow supposed to point you in the right direction would be out of whack. Personally once I figured out I didn't need to even do the gates I just stopped closing them and avoided them entirely.

I have to say this is pretty shocking behavior coming from you. This is coming from a guy who has probably spent a similar dollar amount on video games as you have on cpu's and games over the years, this is one that I can't miss. I always thought their games were pretty good, but I think this one is going to be epic.

I hear ya, but as with all of their games, this is gonna be a massive time sink, as well. I will eventually get it, but it will be a little bit. Just too much else going on.

That's what I'm going to do this time. I've also starting making stupid random potions/poisons out of cheese and pears to sell to merchants for easy gold. It's both dumb and funny.

Finally got around to playing Demon's Souls this weekend. If you're easy to anger, avoid this game, heh. I just finally got thru 1-1 then got roasted by the Dragon, in what I assume is 1-2. Frustrating, but really fun. Started as a Wanderer, but decided to roll a Hunter and enjoying the bow much more.Anyone have any good hints/tips for a noob in DS? I've already checked out the wiki pages and such, but I'm definitely up for other help, esp. on what order to do this game in :)
You picked one of the hardest classes to start the game with as a newbie. Most recommend starting with Royalty (starts with a decent ranged spell), or Temple Knight which starts with some decent armor if you want to tank it. Learn to parry/riposte. 90% of all enemies will need you to learn this technique. In many games the shield is nothing more than an adornment. In DS it is imperative to learn how to use it well. It will save your life more times than you can imagine.Do not get too concerned about lost souls. Yes it sucks hard but you can always get them back. Upgrade like a maniac. Do not worry about wasting stones, you can always find more. Even if it feels wasted, get every last point you can out of all items via upgrades, even if you will throw them out shortly after.

I am now on chapter 12 of Dead Space 2. God I love this game. I think it is even better than Dead Space One. I can't wait for DS3 which will be a day one purchase whenever it comes out.

As usual I caved and bought another game I have been dying to play. I found Mass effect 2 for PS3 for 19.99 new at Amazon. I could not pass it up. I also picked up Deus Ex Human Revolution for 30 bucks new as well.

Currently playing:

Dead Space 2 Chapter 12

Madden 12 Year 2 Miami Dolphins

NCAA 12 Year 4 Miami Hurricanes

NBA 2K11 Year Three Miami Heat

MLB The Show 11 Yankees Year One and 1987 Yankees Year Two

Borderlands Level 38

On deck:

Uncharted 2

Mass Effect 2

Deus Ex Human Revolution

Batman Arkum Asylum

Battlefield 3

I will get Skyrim.....when it drops to 20 bucks. No doubt it will be epic.

I highly recommend Arkham Asylum. It doesn't take too long to get through and is really enjoyable game.I also got Rage and the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is pretty good too. However the story is kind of bland (so far anyway) and isn't "addicting" to play.Anyone get NBA 2k12 yet?

I will pick this up mid next year when it is much cheaper. I am still so into 2K11 and I have so many classic rosters from 2K share that I did not feel I needed the new shiny new car at full retail. But I am very much looking forward to getting 2K12 just for the legends mode. That alone is worth 25 bucks.
