Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (6 Viewers)

After trying to get into Fallout 3 I realized I am just not up for it. The storyline is boring me already and I can't see putting enough time into this thing to make it worth it.

I want something close to what Metal Gear was about ten years ago: Good Story, Interesting Game Play, varied instruments and weapons, but without all the running around aimlessly and endless minutae that Bethesda brings to the table.

I have never played Bishock, Assassin's creed, Prototype, or Mass Effect.

Any recommendations?

I'm a total whore for Bioshock and Mass Effect.

I got a little bored with Bioshock, wasn't quite all that to me. Decent game, good story but perhaps my expectations were too high. I played Prototype 2 but not the original. I thought it was a good play and the story isn't bad.

Anyone played Metro: Last Light yet?
I was thinking about renting it to try out. Andy seemed to like it.
I thought it was pretty good for the couple hours that I played it (rented from Redbox). I'll get it when it comes down in price a bit.
Yeah I was thinking of hitting up Redbox and trying it out.
Same here. That's how I do all my games except those I want to use for the multiplayer (Halo, COD).

Rent them and beat them in a few days. $10 vs. $60.

LA Noir has been sitting on my shelf for a year, is it worth to time to play this game?
I think it was worth playing once. It's not tremendously good, but it's decent. It plays more like a point-and-click adventure game, although it really isn't. You already own it, so you may as well play it.
Thanks, I am a sucker for buying decently reviewed games when they are on sale for under 20 bucks. Have about 5 games I have never played sitting here, lol. I have 2 assassins Creed games, Portal 2, La Noir, Dead Rising 2

Bioshock, and if you like it Bioshock 2. Its just my opinion but I think the Creed games have pretty horrible stories. Mass Effect is a good series, buts probably slower than what you are looking for.Deus Ex: Human Revolution if you've never played it, good story, great gameplay, good pacing. If you never played the original Half-life I urge everyone to play Black Mesa, its an unofficial remake of Half-Life and its beautiful.

Black mesa is awesome. Basically halflife on the source engine. Absolutely fantastic.

I ended up really not liking this game. I finished it, but mainly just so I could say that I gave it a fair shake (same as my approach to Toni Morrison novels). It got decent reviews, but for a story- and character-driven game, the story and characters were not at all memorable.

LA Noire bored me to death and the facial recognition/reaction stuff got old quickly. One of the bigger disappointments recently.

Totally get it. But I simply could not justify saving the Geth twice only to wipe them out and I saw the same outcome as you for Control. I disagree that Saren's end game in ME1 was similar to Synthesis. He was indoctrinated and the reapers would not have spared him.
Well the way I saw it...
He was indoctrinated but he was stating what the Reapers wanted him to state. Also, the catalyst really hard sells the green as good. Like it's sliced bread that craps out ice cream good. Then he really deters you from red. All these negative consequences. "Even you are partly synthetic" and yet you live if you choose red. That just leads me to believe that the ******* is lying and the Geth and EDI are alive somewhere even if their bodies are destroyed. Because honestly, how could a magical beam destroy all the software in the universe? They'd have a lot more problems then just the Geth and EDI dying if that were the case.
Fair enough but I disagree. There are definitely plot holes...

but there is no question that EDI and the Geth die if you choose destroy. I am not sure how you think they would survive in some kind of different state. And I am guessing that for the people with biotics they simply lose their functionality and not actually kill them. But you are correct there are some story flaws with those outcomes but EDI and the Geth definitely die.

And Saren may have believed what he was saying in ME1 (although the ending pretty clearly defines that he didn't in his heart) but that doesn't change the fact that the reapers would have killed all advanced organic life no matter what he said.

I haven't played the Bioshock games but they are on my short list (working on The Witcher now) and I am really looking forward to them.

Deus Ex: HR and Mass Effect have similar game play (3rd person shooter/rpg) and both are a ton of fun. ME has a more developed and far more extensive story but Deus Ex has much better style (IMO). Deus Ex: HR also has better game play than ME1. I would probably go ME1, then either ME2 followed by Deus Ex (or vice versa) to give yourself a break from the ME universe then finish off with ME3 which has the best game play of the four.

Either way you are in for a lot of fun.

Deus Ex: HR is an FPS/RPG and is objectively nothing like ME in gameplay, story or mechanics.

Yes, I forgot that the Deus Ex FPS dynamic only changes to over the shoulder (3rd person) when shooting from cover.

And I didn't say they have similar story.

And frankly gameplay mechanics on PC FPS or over the shoulder are quite similar for most games (WSAD movement, mouse view, left mouse primary attack, right button secondary attack or defend, mouse wheel weapon switch, #hotkeys for weapons and/or powers etc.) the nuance is usually in the nature of the powers you employ.

Exactly

I think you guys are getting carried away with categorization.

Games like Mass Effect and Deus Ex are similar enough to the casual gamer in that they are primarily story driven and the action is almost secondary whereas games like COD and so forth only have a story to deliver the action.

They were killing all advanced organic life for 2 reasons according to the catalyst. One was to protect organic life from synthetic. The second was to evolve to a state that they wouldn't need to harvest organic life anymore. Synthesis was their ideal state of evolution. The catalyst clearly states that that is their ultimate goal and the Catalyst is the Reapers (just look at the refuse ending).I was merely stating that yes the geth and edi's bodies may have been destroyed but there were thousands of programs in those geth platforms that made up one unit. Then we clearly saw that they have a collective in cyberspace where the vast majority of them reside, combined with all the references that EDI is the normandy and the Normandy is still intact and the fact that Shepard lives when the catalyst clearly alludes that he would die from Red, it all leads me to believe that the geth and EDI are alive somewhere and simply need to be rebuilt. As Hackett said, everything lost can be rebuilt. So I believe that. And it's the only one where the Reapers are surely dead.
Not trying to convince you. Just wanted to be clear on the ending itself.

Anyone played Metro: Last Light yet?
It's good, not great. I bought it / sold it already. I liked it until about 2/3 of the way in, when fighting monsters outside (with diminishing gas mask filters) became a chore.

I don't mind it when games are hard (see Souls, Dark), but when games start to feel like work, that's prettymuch the end for me.

I would say it's worth renting for sure, and buying... I'd say $30 is about right. The indoor levels are a lot of fun. Outside... not so much.

What is everyone's thoughts on Dishonored? I've been thinking about picking that up after I beat Bioshock Infinite
It is well worth your time. Best stealth game since the Thief games. Plus, if you don't like stealth, there's tons of fighting and cool offensive powers if you wish to go that route.

I just think its disingenuous to continue to lump games together like that; all first person games aren't the same; all third person games aren't the same; two games that share a couple of mechanics do not make them similar. I think its silly to lump a game where you are jesus incarnate traveling around at the speed of light in third person with your crew of aliens to save the universe from the borg, shooting your super powers from behind cover; to a game where you play a single guy, on earth, sneaking around in first person.

I got RDR Undead Nightmare as a gift last year and started playing last week. When I went to rescue a missing person all of my destinations were safe. Immediately after bringing her back it told me that Blackwater had been lost. It wasn't even under attack when I took the missing persons mission. That didn't make me happy and the game seems pretty repetitive. Is this game worth finishing? Should I start over since I'm not that far in or will losing Blackwater not affect game play that much?

I always try to give new IPs a try at least as a rental. If I wind up liking it, then I'll eventually buy it. I feel I have to support new games otherwise all we ever get is sequel after sequel.

God I love ME2. Started it over the weekend......and it is so much better now that I played ME 1. I already loved ME2....but now I know everything that is going on, seeing some old faces...what a series.

Planet Scanning is the only minor gripe....yet I still grind away at it LOL.

If you like Marvel Comics and Diablo style action RPGs, then I recommend you never even waste your bandwidth downloading Marvel Heroes, the new F2P fischerprice babies first action rpg now available on steam.

So I finally feel like I am starting to get the hang of CK2. I managed to pass my duchy to an heir and am playing as him. I have expanded the duchy of Slavonia. It is now as big as what the King of Croatia holds. I expanded it originally but my heir lost some to younger brother and sister. I still don't get the way that part works. But it turned out he was heir for both of them. Two assassinations later the realm has been expanded and solidified under my heir. My next goal is to become King of Croatia. After my current characters wife died young(of natural causes I swear, no really) I was able to marry into the HRE. Hoping that gives me some usefull allies when the time comes to make my move. I am waiting to see how much longer the old king will live. Who knows maybe a well placed killing or two will be better than all out war and acheive the same thing.
Sounds like you have Gavelkind succession law. It splits the holdings between all heirs.
I do have that and I have been trying to figure out how to change it.

Of course killing them when I moved to this character also fixed it for now.
You can change it after your reign exceeds 10 years.

I know it's cheating but you can do a simple google search to find the best planets to find specific resources. Frankly I wish I had thought of it far sooner into my ME2 gameplay than I did.

I knew I was in for trouble when I wrote it

But on the PC (I assume the same for most platforms but don't know for certain) the mechanics for all first person or over the shoulder shooters are quite similar. It doesn't make the games similar just the gameplay.

Personally I thought ME and Deus Ex had a similar feel when playing them. I certainly felt Deus Ex was more similar to ME than to something like CoD2 or Borderlands 2. Enough so that I think it is fair to compare them. Maybe I am the only one

Your rank will affect how much you can change as far as Royal authority. Succession laws don't matter, IIRC. You can only make one change a lifetime, however.

Now is that as a king or any rank?
Your rank will affect how much you can change as far as Royal authority. Succession laws don't matter, IIRC. You can only make one change a lifetime, however.
Thanks for the info

If you like Marvel Comics and Diablo style action RPGs, then I recommend you never even waste your bandwidth downloading Marvel Heroes, the new F2P fischerprice babies first action rpg now available on steam.
I was wondering if that was worth my time to try.
12 GBs downloaded at 2mb/s. Time ill never get back.

What is everyone's thoughts on Dishonored? I've been thinking about picking that up after I beat Bioshock Infinite
Really good game. I loved the stealth mechanics, and the developers did a good job building an interesting and believable "world" in Dunwall.

I have ME2 and ME3 plus Tomb Raider to trade in Friday. I am plumb outta games. So, I am heading to Gamestop to see what I can get on the cheap. Games I am thinking about:

Dark Souls (only like $19 new on the website)

Dues Ex

Dragon's Dogma

Far Cry 3

Not sure what direction I want to go. Will probably come down to what couple of games on this list can I get at the best price. I will definitely get Last of Us, but I'll wait until the price comes down a bit most likely. That's the reason Infinite isn't on this list yet, nor Metro. They are both still to pricey. This is on the PS3 by the way.

Just started Batman: Arkham City and am impressed so far. The story is engaging and the controls so far are really good.

So it sounds like the majority of early reviews for The Last of Us have been perfect scores so far.
I figured this game was going to be really good, but from what I'm reading it's on pace to knock off GTA4 as the best-reviewed game this generation.
Can't wait for this game. Then again, maybe this game coming out coincides with school ending so maybe that is why I can't wait for it. Either way, to me, this feels like a modern day Final Fantasy type adventure game. Yeah, I know it isn't but right now that is what it feels like to me.

Crap. I wonder how many Marriage Points I'll lose when I buy this game on Day 1.
Yeah, I'm screwed too. Not sure how I'll explain buying this when I have Fallout 3 GOTY, Witcher 2, and Kingdoms of Amalur sitting untouched.
Luckily for me my wife is cool with my gaming. I wish I could find more games that are the type we could both play. She likes games where I handle the killing and she gets to do the exploring, then she follows the dead bodies to where I am. The Serious Sam PC series was great for that.

My wife is like this, too. She games as much as me, in fact (she generally likes turn-based RPG's and similar - she likes the Animal Crossing series, too, and is juiced for the new one next week.) IIRC, you don't have kids either. Another point for the childfree - none of this "when she lets me game" stuff. ;)
