Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (11 Viewers)

Just picked up a ps3 tonight. Came with The Last of Us and a Batman game. Also grabbed Red Dead Redemption as a friend said that was his favorite game. Want to pick up the Lego Marvel one soon. What else are must have ps3 games?
Uncharted 1 and 2 are pretty fun and can be had for cheap now.
Uncharted 3 free for ps plus members right now. Great studio (also made the last of us)

Thanks for all the recommendations. Mostly alone. Have a Wii for play with the kids.
There are a huge number of really good games out there, since you're getting in at the very end of the generation. And most of them are dirt cheap now. If you tell us what kind of games you generally like, it's easier to narrow things down, but I second the recommendation for Uncharted 1-3. All of those are fun over-the-shoulder shooters and feature excellent writing and voice acting. I'll also toss Dead Space 1 and 2 out there if you're looking for something tense and atmospheric. I don't care much for the God of War franchise because I just don't like the genre, but GOW3 provides some nice eye candy and is probably fun if you like hack-and-slash combat games. Metal Gear Solid 4 has aged well and still looks like something that just came out even though it's at least five years old -- if you're not familiar with the franchise, it's about stealth and very long expository cutscenes. Finally, I'll recommend Demon's Souls and/or Dark Souls. Those are combat-intensive RPGs that have a very devoted following, but they're unforgiving and not for everybody. But you should be able to find them for cheap so if you try Demon's Souls and can't get through the first level you're not out much.

Other people have recommended Skyrim and Fallout. A word of caution on those. Both of those titles were made by Bethesda, which is the one studio that never did really figure out the PS3. Lots of people have complained that these games run comparatively poorly on the PS3, in particular causing the console to freeze up on a regular basis. I played both with relatively few issues, but I've seen enough complaints both at FBG and elsewhere that I don't usually recommend them. If you get FO3, you might especially avoid the Game of the Year edition -- I've read that the DLC is virtually unplayable and that activating it tends to mess up the main game too. These are good games and I liked them, but do temper your expectations a little.

Good advice. It has been a few years but I think Fallout is not quite the issue it once was. It had a pretty bad problem on the original ps3's but the problem was virtually gone for people who played on the slim.

I played about 250 hours of Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition on the slim and the game locked up twice, which is probably not atypical of playing any game that length.

Get yourself a Playstation Plus account. I did the 3 month one for now @ $18. Free games every month. This month, I downloaded Grid 2, Uncharted 3, & Borderlands 2. Next month's big game is Bioshock Infinite.

Are the games yours to keep or just use that month? I'm new to all this. Thanks.

Yours to keep as long as your playstation plus account is active. If you let it run out, you still have the games on your HD, they are just unplayable. Once you re-up, the games become unlocked again. I should've jumped on the Black Friday deal of $30 for a year of Playstation Plus.. A year now will run you $49.99 but it's well worth it for the free games.

January's free games for the PS3 are:

DMC Devil May Cry

BioShock Infinite

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

I'll be downloading all three. You can also download older PS2 games. I just downloaded Ico and Shadows of the Colossus.

The free games that Sony releases for being a PSN+ member puts XBox's Games with Gold choices to shame. It's not even close.

Not at all. While PS+ is dropping games that came out this year like Grid 2 and Bioshock Infinite, Xbox gives us Halo 3 and Assassins Creed 2.

And while Halo 3 is a good game, everyone that wants the game probably already owns it. I can see how people missed out on Assassin's Creed 2, though. Probably my favorite game that they offered in Games With Gold.

Question for the guys playing Lego Marvel.

How do you switch characters when going through the connecting areas of the map? Not in the levels themselves, I know how to do that via free play but in the connecting areas I can"t seem to switch.

For example, I am in a connecting area and see a gold brick I want to get but need the powers of one of the characters I have purchased. How do I switch to bring up the full list characters I have purchased?

I tried to hold down triangle like in Lord of the Rings but that does not do anything. I Harry Potter there were cauldrons you could use to switch your character to any you have purchased.

Depending on your time frame for when you want to upgrade to the PS4, you might want to hold off on the purchase as Diablo 3 will be re-released on the PS4 as Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil, which will incorporate the new expansion of Reaper of Souls which adds what looks to be a ton to an already nice game.

I sold my Diablo 3 just last week and will probably rebuy once I upgrade to the PS4.
Will be ages before I dive in to any sort of new system. So that really isn't a factor. I have played the original Diablo back in the day, so I sort of know what it was all about. I think I enjoy a mindless time killer on occasion, and I figured that was one.

There are little blue icons that have a computer in them that you can change into different characters but I'm pretty sure that just holding down triangle should do the same assuming that you're either in New York or in free-play mode of a level. If you're in an actual level, toggling L1 and R1 should toggle characters as well.

cool thanks! We can switch now.

This game is awesome so far.

We just started today. Boys just took down Dr. Octopus. This is our first Lego game, if they are all this good we will be buying some older games.

p.s. Anything to get Skylanders off the system is a plus

this is a top notch Lego game (I have played 6 different ones), but they are all pretty good.

If they liked Lord of the Rings, Lego Lord of the Rings was a very nice game too.

I sent a PM to Mad Cow but may as well post here too since I want to buy today. Let me know if you see anything that I am overlooking.

CPU- AMD FX-9590 4.7GHz (220W)

GPU- EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 760

MB- ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z

RAM- 4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 2133

Power Supply- Corsair RM850 850W

CPU Cooler- Zalman 110mm 2 ball

SSD- Samsung 840 128GB (OS)

SSD- Samsung 840 256GB (Steam+Games)

I already have a nice case that will hold all this stuff.
Seems a shame to not have more of a gpu with the rest. Can you afford to go up a tier?
I could. Any recommendations?I'm looking at the EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 770 now.
That would be a nice bump.
Just curious, what would this rig cost?
I didn't get great deals but got it for about $1700 on Newegg. I could have taken more time and bought smarter but wanted it quickly since it is replacing my current dork machine. :nerd:

must create ps+ account didn't realize what I was missing
You also get discount on a lot of purchases. If a game costs $15, you might get it for $7.50. I've also seen some games at 85% off. For example, I'm pissed that I missed out on Guacamelee @ 75% this past weekend. It's back up to $15.

That seems a bit high, but I haven't priced an entire system in a while, been doing piecemeal upgrades for the last few years. Guessing the 2 SSDs added a bunch to the cost?

CPU- AMD FX-9590 4.7GHz (220W) - $330
GPU- EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 760 - $410
MB- ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z - $225
RAM- 4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 2133 - $170
Power Supply- Corsair RM850 850W - $150
CPU Cooler- Zalman 110mm 2 ball - $44
SSD- Samsung 840 128GB (OS) - $140
SSD- Samsung 840 256GB (Steam+Games) - $220

Total without shipping: $1689

I would bet that I could have saved about $200 - $300 if I bought smarter and watched prices/sales for a bit or so but wanted a new rig and had some money to spend.

You could have gotten that SSD for $80 less pretty easily. :(

Once you activate PS+, its unlikely that you'll ever let it un-activate. If you're on PS4, you need it to play online, which makes it kind of a no-brainer (although the games on PS4 are nowhere near as good as good as the PS3 games). And if you're on PS3, the games are pretty awesome. I signed up a couple of years ago pretty much for the express purpose of playing Infamous 2, and I never looked back.

I've said this before, but I'm going to be very interested in seeing if Sony can keep this up in the new generation. There's no backlog of games to draw from anymore, and while Resogun and Don't Starve are nice offerings, they don't measure up to Bioshock Infinite or XCOM.

So I turned it on tonight to watch netflix and after 5 minutes it overheated and shut off. Didn't feel that warm so turned it on after 5 minutes. Went through a reboot process and after the fan ran extremely fast for a minute and then backed down. Its working now but the fan is kinda loud like a loud PC. Is it normal to hear the fan like that. Do I have a dud I need to return?

Finally have the GTX 770 installed and working. All I needed was the 6-pin to 8-pin adapter. Going to return the PSU I bought since I don't need it. I may be on tonight to work it in.

Sounds like a dud unless you have it in an enclosed space.

What's the deal with the Assassin's Creed franchise releasing so many titles in such a short period of time? The next installment comes out on Jan 15th. Doesn't that make it three titles in less than a year?

Seems to me they can't possibly have truly well developed story lines for each game and that makes it seem like all these titles will simply be highly derivative with identical gameplay wrapped around identical enemies wearing different costumes. I guess that makes me wonder which one, if any, should a gamer drop his money on?

I bought the original AC when it first came out and absolutely hated it, specifically the controls. I have avoided playing any of the other titles until now and a friend of mine suggested IV:Black Flag because he knew that I enjoyed Far Cry 3 and the hunting/crafting element. I am absolutely enjoying IV right now and the pirate/sailing elements are a lot of fun.

the game coming out in january is just a remastered version of the vita game, not a new game

There have been so many "Lord of the Rings" games that at first when I saw the article for Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor I bypassed it..

But I was bored the other night so brought out the magazine and read the article and now am intrigued.. Sounds almost like Red Dead Redemption, with a story and free roaming, but in the land of Mordor..

ETA - Just checked Amazon... Sorry I didn't check before// the release date isn't for another year :kicksrock:

I haven't had time to play games in years due to two kids. Just picked up Uncharted 1-3 for about $29 and am about halfway through it the first one. Having fun with it. The kid at Gamestop told me if I like them the Last of Us would probably be one I'd like when finished. Would the newest Tomb Raider be a good one too if I find it for a good price somewhere?

This. I picked up Black Flag last week and I'm loving it so far. The weakest parts are the traditional AC parts -- following people around and the like. The rest of the game is a completely enjoyable pirate simulator that's AC in name only.

yes on all those games

Yes. Good recommendation by the kid at GS.

I really enjoyed all of the above games and would add Dishonored, God of War series, and Mass Effect.

I don't know what a vita game is.

Seems to me they can't possibly have truly well developed story lines for each game and that makes it seem like all these titles will simply be highly derivative with identical gameplay wrapped around identical enemies wearing different costumes. I guess that makes me wonder which one, if any, should a gamer drop his money on?
the game coming out in january is just a remastered version of the vita game, not a new game
I don't know what a vita game is.
you never heard of the PS vita?

The PS Vita is the handheld next generation system that succeeded the PSP.

Actually, Liberation came out last year as a PS Vita exclusive and it's now being ported to XBLA, PSN and PC. It stars the first and only female assassin (in a main role).

Have played all of them, AC 2 is the best in the series bar far. About 20% into AC IV and it's definitely the best since AC2 but still not nearly as engaging or as fun. So far the story in AC2 is the best in the series as well.
