Picked up Far Cry 3 on the Steam sale. The graphics are great and I like the Skyrim-style gameplay but jeez, having to fight your way through Steam and Uplay and the abominable save system just to get started, and then having to listen to the same mission intro every time (until you complete the mission) is rapidly turning me off.

I hate that Ubisoft forces UPlay on us and it's even worse than Origin is. It doesn't help that Ubisoft releases some pretty great games, so you really have to use it. (Even the console versions require UPlay accounts now)

Lots of good ones. Arkham City is the one I would try. Takes the least time picking up and playing and you feel like a Badass. Plus it only takes about 15-20 hours to beat the main story if you're casually playing it.

Now that I have fully adopted Steam as my gaming platform my motto is that I should never pay more than $7.49 for any video game. Too much good stuff is out there to justify shelling out $60 on the latest game.

I have played Dishonored and Saints Row: The Third all the way through and I really enjoy them both. Very different games.

Dishonored has a decent story (at best) but is one of the best first person stealth games I have every played. Setting up and executing a takedown of an enemy without alerting other enemies never fails to get my heart pumping. The developers did an excellent job with the AI as well. Predicting the patterns of enemies is really difficult which adds a lot to the game.

Saints Row: The Third is one of those open world mayhem games like GTA. I am generally not much of a fan of those games but SRIII has a brilliant sense of humor that makes it totally worth it. Charging a group of gangbangers armed with nothing but a six foot <ahem> phallus and proceeding to beat them into submission with it is as hysterical as it is surreal. And it really never gets old. Totally worth playing and I am now a dedicated fan of the franchise.

I played about an hour of Arkham Asylum (not Arkham City) and while I liked the visual style and the story seemed solid enough the combat dynamics were pretty button mashy. I will definitely get back to it, it is too highly regarded to not give it a full playthrough but it didn't capture me right away. Not sure if the controls for Arkham City are improved but if they are not I think there are better options on your list.

Far cry is a slightly poorer man's version of Fallout 3 on drugs (literally, at times). Enjoyable but I'm not sure I'd give it the "special" label.

I really liked FC3 and got 100% completion on it. Never played the fallout series for some reason.

The arkham series is great, you'll enjoy it.

Got a 3DS XL for Christmas with Pokemon X and TLOZ: A Link Between Worlds. We have a Wii U, but I haven't truly gotten into a non-PC system in years.

I have yet to play any of the Steam games I bought during the sale, the 3DS is awesome.

So my new ps3 seems ok after that one weird overheated shutdown. Played a couple hours the other day, watched a netflix movie and watched a blue ray movie tonight.

Signed up for 3 months of PlayStation plus and trying to download some games. These take forever. Does anyone know if any of the free titles disappear tomorrow as its January 1st? If so I should try grab them first right?

Once you activate PS+, its unlikely that you'll ever let it un-activate. If you're on PS4, you need it to play online, which makes it kind of a no-brainer (although the games on PS4 are nowhere near as good as good as the PS3 games). And if you're on PS3, the games are pretty awesome. I signed up a couple of years ago pretty much for the express purpose of playing Infamous 2, and I never looked back.

I've said this before, but I'm going to be very interested in seeing if Sony can keep this up in the new generation. There's no backlog of games to draw from anymore, and while Resogun and Don't Starve are nice offerings, they don't measure up to Bioshock Infinite or XCOM.

anyone playing NBA 2k14 on the xbox one? I just picked it up yesterday (and hadn't played a 2k game for a while, so there's obviously a big learning curve) but I am literally finding it impossible to keep contact with dribblers on defense. Its like they're made of butter and they just slip by me at will. Even if I give them cushion, my player slides around like he's on ice and they can pretty much go by me whenever they want. Very frustrating when you can't even keep the Raymond Feltons of the world from just getting into the lane at will.

I'm sure there are some sliders that would fix the problem, but that just seems like a crutch if I'm just doing something wrong.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Shadow of Chernobyl is absolutely amazing, its an open world first person shooter. You're essentially a mercenary in the wastes around Chernobyl, there are other freelance mercenaries as well as a couple factions that give you missions and objectives. The Chernobyl meltdown has left the surrounding area riddled with horrible mutated wild animals and people as well as 'anomalies' that present themselves in unique ways that you can either use to your advantage or unwittingly get trapped in.

It can get legitimately unsettling at times, overall the game does atmosphere incredibly and the game itself is quite fun.

Dead Space is an awesome shooter but it is 3rd person perspective.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is pretty sweet as well but it's not v. zombies.

Half Life 2 is one of the most highly regarded games ever. Still holds up pretty well too.

Metro 2033 is solid but unspectacular.

Borderlands 2 is also a whole lot of fun as well as being friggin' hysterical.

Left 4 Dead 2 is the first to come in mind. Keep in mind that it's better played co-operative, not alone. Also, Maelstrom and I are trying a new free-to-play Half-Life 2 mod called No More Room in Hell. Looks like it will be very good for those who like Left 4 Dead.

And also make sure to play Half-Life 2 (and Black Mesa, especially if you've never played the first Half-Life) if you haven't already. You can get the whole Half-Life series for only $10 on Steam right now. Easily my favorite series not made by Nintendo.

One more that I thought of was DayZ. It's currently in alpha stages, so you'd be paying to play a game that isn't finished, but I hear good things about it. I'd definitely check to make sure your system could run it first. I doubt you'd have any trouble with the Valve games I listed above, though.

It's being developed by a pretty small indie developer and the game is a very ambitious undertaking for even a known developer like Bethesda (who all of you probably know from their Elder Scrolls and Fallout [3/New Vegas] series). Also if you're familiar with Bethesda's games, you know that they are very riddled with bugs and that's for a single player game. Add in the MMO aspect of DayZ and you can see why it will take a while to get all the bugs out of the system. I just hope that the interest surrounding the game doesn't pass it by by the time they release. As long as it's good, I doubt that will happen.

I probably should have noted above that you can play the DayZ mod for free if you own Arma II and Arma II: Combined Operations (both can be found in this bundle right now on sale for $12.49).

I personally do not own DayZ, so I don't know enough to say if there is much difference from the mod and the stand-alone game. But from what I gather, all future work is going toward the stand-alone game and it will be supported there.

Got Battlefield 4 for Christmas on 360. Campaign was awful. I know, I know....everyone gets these games for the MP, but my favorite part of the COD series was the campaign. Just so much better....and longer. Holy crap. I felt like I blinked and BF4 was over.

That being said, the BF4 MP is awesome.

Mickey's Castle of Illusion on the PSN. Only costs $3.75 and last about 2-3 hours. But it's perfect for little kids and parents alike. cool boss battles. It's a HD remake of the Sega Genesis classic and they nailed it. Beat the game with my kid last night. Highly recommended.

Gonna check out the Duck Tales remake this week.

I'd agree. I have both a 360 and a PS3. I never buy games for the PS3 because I was sick of the "buy a new game, spend 30 minutes updating the system before you can play" window. Plus, if you don't play it daily, it seems every time you go back to it, there is a new update. If it will update itself while not in use, this would make me use it a lot more.

If there are any night owls here, you can watch a "speedrun" of it on Jan 6, 3:50 AM CT, followed by the original DuckTales game (highly recommend watching anything dxtr plays, he's nigh inhuman).

Bought both Ducktales and Mickey for my kids (and me) to play. Had both when I was younger, they look beautiful and tough to pass up for the price when not too many current games are made this way. Classic side-scroller is almost a new genre for younger kids.

Played a little more The Last of Us last night. My wife sat down as I was about ten minutes in and wanted to watch one of her shows. I gave her the old line of "Let me find a save point" lol. 90 minutes later we were both engrossed in the story of the game and the sheer brutality and phenomenal story. We finished talking to Bill in Lincoln. His town was crazy and had emotional highs and lows and actually made my blood pressure rise. Then we ended the night when we got to Pittsburgh.

Forget game of the year. This game might crack my top 10 all time and I'm not even halfway done with it.

Plus, if you don't play it daily, it seems every time you go back to it, there is a new update. If it will update itself while not in use, this would make me use it a lot more.

I don't use it but the PS3 has a built in Auto Update feature that was added back in October. You just need to turn the feature on and it will check for and update itself if needed every 48 hours.

Played a little more The Last of Us last night. My wife sat down as I was about ten minutes in and wanted to watch one of her shows. I gave her the old line of "Let me find a save point" lol. 90 minutes later we were both engrossed in the story of the game and the sheer brutality and phenomenal story. We finished talking to Bill in Lincoln. His town was crazy and had emotional highs and lows and actually made my blood pressure rise. Then we ended the night when we got to Pittsburgh.

Forget game of the year. This game might crack my top 10 all time and I'm not even halfway done with it.

I'm really enjoying GTA 5 Online right now but I might pick this one up. I saw it in Game Stop used for $49; I asked the guy working there "wow, used already?" He said it's a great story but once the story is over, there's really not much else to do.

I think I might wait for it to come down a bit.

The free games that Sony releases for being a PSN+ member puts XBox's Games with Gold choices to shame. It's not even close.

Not at all. While PS+ is dropping games that came out this year like Grid 2 and Bioshock Infinite, Xbox gives us Halo 3 and Assassins Creed 2.

And while Halo 3 is a good game, everyone that wants the game probably already owns it. I can see how people missed out on Assassin's Creed 2, though. Probably my favorite game that they offered in Games With Gold.

I'm enjoying Games with Gold specifically because they are doing some of the older titles I haven't played and am still interested in. For instance Sleeping Dogs, which got some mention in the last few pages, is the download this month. I'll be getting it and be glad I never bought it when I was shopping used titles.

Ok....so I picked up WWE 2K14 and the game is total hoot. Tons of fun. Playing through the 30 years of Wrestlemania Mode first to get all the legends unlocked. Then on to my own UNiverse mode. The game is really nice. Controls are smooth, graphics are tight, the atmosphere totally WWE madness. Now keep in mind I have not watched single minute of any type of wrestling since 1989. So I am totally green to so many of the different types of matches, heros and heels, alliances, etc etc. So this is all new for me and probably why I am just diving in and having a blast.

Diablo 3 is simply crack. What a great hack and slash. IMO the best I have ever played. My son, brother-inlaw and niece all play together and we are butchering our way thorugh this game. I decided to run as a Monk for my first playthrough. Really cool character build.

And to anyone who has not played through The Last of Us........probably a top 3 non sports game for me all time. A true gem. And worth multiple playthroughs on the hard and survival levels. Normal was tense enough....wait till you play through on hard and survival where supplies are scarce. Insane.

This month is the first time they've done a game that has released since 2010. Hopefully it's a change for the better. I know I've wanted to try Sleeping Dogs, but I never got around to it and this will give me that chance.
