I am kind of torn about this game. It is visually very stunning, maybe the most visually interesting platformer I have played.Best game I've played on the XBone. You'll get better at the tree on like your 7th or 8th time through.Ori and the Blind Forest - Very visually stunning game, definitely has a Hayao Miazaki feel to it. The story telling is also very interesting. Combat and movement mechanics are great too. However some of the levels are just incredibly frustrating. I must have died 50-75 times just trying to climb (and escape from) that damn water tree.
The abilities Ori acquires are very cool and original plus they do a great job with delivering them throughout the game so the learning curve for each one is never too steep. Additional kudos for mapping the keyboard/mouse minimalistically for having so many abilities.
The story is well told and very touching and even heart wrenching at times.
The level design ranges from very straightforward to extraordinarily challenging, but they always provide you the tools to get past the obstacles and the save system is very robust so you can save often and on ALMOST every level.
That "almost" is the reason I am kind of torn about this game. There are 3-4 different levels that throw you into essentially a "race-or-die" situation. They provide no safe zones to take a deep breath and move on to the next sequence and each one requires maybe 30-50 different precise maneuvers utilizing a multitude of Ori's abilities. If you fail a maneuver you die. They are very challenging and a ton of fun, at first, but along with there being no safe zones there is no ability to save anywhere in the middle of the sequence so when you die (and you will die...often) you have to start back at the beginning of the sequence. It's funny the first 20-30 times but it wears thin after awhile and becomes more of an exercise in frustration than an entertaining challenge. I had enough trouble with the tree sequence I mentioned above but the final escape of the game was one of my most frustrating gaming experiences ever. I died well over 100 times. I walked away from the game three separate times. I looked online to see if I could find cheat codes just so I could bypass the ####### sequence and see how the game ended. I even penned a letter to the developers in my head telling them all the ways I think they could stick their heads up their #####. The only good thing is that it gets you back to the beginning of the sequence very quickly so you don't need to deal with load screens (if I did I would have given up entirely). Finally this morning I got lucky and beat it.
I definitely recommend this game but some of the sheen came off for me because of those sequences. As always YMMV.
I think I'm in the mid 60s power, mid 50s contact, 60 clutch...and nothing into D yet. Overall 62. I'm stinking it up right now. Any suggestions?
