I'm on PC, so I'll get it off steam at some point when they take it down to $19 and do a 50% off sale, or something around there.  Was hoping I would see something like that on the steam summer sale, but as we learned last year, the summer sale just ain't what it used to be...

I think a lot of people will find it boring.  I've already seen things from the stream that make me want it, however.  

One of them is that it doesn't seem like you speak the language of each alien race you come across and as you explore ruins and planets, you start learning words and eventually will be able to understand what people are saying.  

There was also a point in the stream where he was sitting in a space station watching dozens of alien ships arrive.  You could barter with them to buy their ships and some were very impressive and also expensive, so there seems to be good depth in the various upgrading paths and such.   

That said, I've seen some tense spots.  He barely made it out after warping into a giant space battle with 20 ships attacking him.  Then, one of the planets he landed on had radiation storms on the surface making exploration pretty frantic.  It's not just flying around and look at the pretty creatures.  He did say, however that a lot of the cool new stuff was literally just released in a patch so a lot of this gameplay was not part of the original advertising most likely.

I have not seen any sign of a plot though.

Was just coming in here to post this. Seems like it's easy to forget when you're developing a game as ambitious as this that, while just getting everything to function might be an achievement in itself, to be a success it has to actually be fun.

I can see some potential based on what I see on the stream.

Just watched him blast himself a hole in the ground to take shelter in. That was kinda cool. I hear you can blast your way in (and out) of caves too.

 
Actually its a good thing that the game universe has billions of planets.  Since apparently users can name planets upon discovery, you won't run into too many planets named penis or dickbutt.

That could be entertaining but would the path there be fun?  I'm holding out until I've read more reviews around actual gameplay and the user experience.

 
Sounds dull to me. Game like this needs online multiplayer and apparently it's nearly impossible to cross paths with anyone. I already feel alone in a vast universe, don't need a game to draw attention to it.

 
Its obviously catered to people who can immerse themselves into games and can zone out just doing monotonous things such as resource gathering and speeding through space exploring randomly generated worlds.

It does look pretty cool. The random part is what doesn't interest me. Im all for a randomly created world, but then I like it when it stays that way, ie, everyone experiences the same worlds. That makes it more "real" and you can share stories and tell people about the places you found which can then be visited.

Present company excepted of course, but people on the internet are #####.  Any game that is primarily online multiplayer is an instant No for me.

This would be good if it was the foundation for a game, not the whole thing.  Someone will take this idea I think, put a game on top and it will be awesome.

The game I am most looking forward to over the next couple of months is the PS4 remaster of Resident Evil 4.  So yes, I think you are on to something here.

There have been a handful of awesome games this generation, but mostly it's been forgettable so far.

 
Whomever plays No Man's Sky and is the first to name a planet Shuke, I will buy you a beer.

ETA: If it's a black ice planet, double maybe even triple beer points.

Agreed so much on this.  I'm not hyped for any AAA title this year at all.  Not even Battlefield 1, which is a series I'm always usually into.  The only games I can think of that I'm excited about is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which doesn't release until next year, and Dishonored 2 (I really enjoyed the first).   I've gotten to the point where I'm mainly playing indie games and working on my backlog.  I may just be getting too old.... naw, that ain't it.

 
In terms of AAA titles. Dark Souls 3, Witcher 3, Overwatch. I'm sure there are more, but I've put more than enough hours in on those titles.

Just checked while i'm in queue, 84 hours of overwatch :|

I've got about 50. Have pretty much given up other games (except Boom Beach) until the new Civ comes out.

 
I'm like equally excited and worried for the new civ. Want a new Civ to play, but I really don't want it to suck. The complaints that its dumbed down and stylistically looks like a mobile game concern me. 

Beyond earth also sucked.

Beyond Earth was and still remains about 60% of a regular Civ game.  Just woefully incomplete in so many ways.

I'm excited to suck again at Civ.  While its a long struggle, once you get good its pretty invigorating.  I have lofty expectations for the game after seeing a number of live in-game action.

 
This generation has some solid titles. MGS5, Until Dawn, Witcher, Shadows of Mordor, Overwatch, Bloodborne, Tomb Raider, Uncharted 4. Wolfenstein, Doom, Dying Light, Mad Max. There's also a few like the Division that came close to being something really good.

Upcoming games there's a new Mass Effect, Horizon, Spider-Man, Detriot, Final Fantasy 15(?), Final Fantasy 7 remake. So it's not like the pipeline is completely empty. Lots of games take some time before they are remembered as greats. 

However, I think console games are suffering from trying to fight too many battles right now. They're working on the Scorpio and NEO. They're trying to push VR and 4K. Indie/small dev games carry less risk and are becoming much more accepted by mainstream gamers (No Mans Sky is a small dev game with a AAA marketing campaign). Plus, as more people cut cable TV out these machines are being expected to deliver TV and movie services. This also stresses servers and online functions, not just the consoles output and software. 

 
It seems like now the game industry is ripe for picking. Gamers are hungry for a AAA game and traditional/old presumptions are dying. The old ideas that I'm referring too are things like "you have to release big titles in October/November" and "games are mostly played by kids" and "summer is a dead time for game releases." 

Big companies have to feel this is still a market that can be tapped into. Right now everyone here seems to be ready to buy a big AAA game. This isn't a niche market. It's a multi billion dollar industry with room to grow. Tech companies like Google, Apple and Samsung should some technical knowledge to help smooth the transition. HBO, Paramount and other major entertainment companies would have an acting and story telling edge.

This.  I'm finding by far the most enjoyment from story based open world games like Witcher 3, GTA V, and to a lesser extent the Far Cry games and FO4.  I find I've lost all interest in straight FPS games.  Great story I can pursue when I feel like it and break it up with exploring an interesting world, that's what I want. 

 
Can not wait for no Mans Sky to be available for PC. Been reading/watching everything I can about and so looking forward to it. May well be all I play until Watch Dogs 2.

 
Thus far sports games have taken the leap I have been waiting for with vastly improved AI on MLB The Show and NBA 2K series. Madden is finally feeling next gen with Madden 16 making some huge gameplay strides and Madden 17 shaping up to be a great entry into the series.

If your a baseball game freak and crave a console simulation of the sport The Show delivers the goods.

MLB 16

NBA 2K16

Madden 16

All three have been excellent sports games.

Non sports games have been thinner thus far:

The Witcher 3 - I barely scratched the surface and will be restarting this again...huge immense game with amazing story telling.

Far Cry Primal - vastly underrated

Far Cry 4 - A gorgeous game and I found it even more fun than FC3

Wolfenstein New Order - best FPS I ever played

Shadows of Mordor - Outstanding

Until Dawn - Great horror interactive game

Uncharted 4 - incredible

Fallout 4 - deep, and full of exploration and quest lines to do

Dying Light - awesome zombie game with a retro 80's soundtrack and John Carpenter feel

7 Days To Die (not a next gen title more like an alpha build with extensive in going support but fun as hell and a fantastic couch co-op game)

Those are my favorites thus far for this new gen of games. I have Mad Max and Batman Arkham Knight in the que as well as Life Is Strange, Telltales Batman.

I am picking up No Mans Sky today after work and this is the type of game where you create your own adventures and storylines. Really old school in that regard. The game looks pretty impressive and if your into exploration, survival, resource gathering and trade this can be an epic release.

 
I tried not to watch any videos other than the official trailer before the game came out to try to avoid as many spoilers as possible.  I'm glad I did.  Loaded it up and played for a couple hours last night.  I have a few other friends (along with my wife) that are playing and we all sat in a chat and talked to each other while exploring.  They all got ####ty planets when they started.  High radiation, super hot, aggressive badass animals, etc.  They've all gone to 3+ planets each while I am still on my home planet.  My planet is pretty awesome... possible spoilers ahead!

Planet "Kanil Alpha" is a little cold (45 degree F highs, 15 degree F lows).  There are a bunch of mini dinosaurs that appear to eat plants (although some let me feed them iron) but are generally either friendly, or afraid of me.  After about half an hour of exploring I was completely lost.

I ended up in a cave with tons of plutonium and started mining like crazy.  Apparently the sentinels (NPCs that make sure you don't destroy a planet) did not like me strip mining and started to attack.  My laser made short work of them but not until they had already made a distress call to some bigger/badder sentinels.  I high tailed it out of the area before they got there and it eventually told me they were no longer after me.

I decided to try to find my ship so I could drop off my supplies but on my way back to where I thought my ship was, I found what appeared to be an abandoned building.  After going into the building I met my first alien race.  The race is named "Gek" and the best I can explain it is a frog with a beak and chubby humanoid body.  I tried to talk to me but I didn't understand a word.  After trying to say multiple things to him the frog dude took pity on me and gave me some space credits just for being cool I guess.  I left and started a patrol around the camp and eventually "found" three Gek words.  They are "Gek", "get", and "high" (not kidding) along with some Geknip.

I started getting messages that my inventory was full so I decided I really needed to find my ship.  I eventually realized there is an icon on the map that shows you exactly where your ship is and gives you an estimated time until you reach it walking in a straight line.  After wandering aimlessly for an hour at this point, I was less than two minutes away from my ship.  I got back to my ship, dropped off the items in my inventory, and was able to fully repair the ship (it starts off busto).

From here I really wanted to fly so I hopped in my ship but rather than going to space, I flew around the planet a bit until I spotted what looked like another abandoned camp.  I landed and started exploring.  The building was sealed but the door was made of steel and said it could be destroyed.  I destroyed it and all hell broke loose.  

Sirens started going off 5 sentinels came down and started firing on me.  I managed to get into the building, notice some devices that are able to be interacted with on the wall but ignored them for now as I was being killed rapidly.  The only way the sentinels could get to me was to funnel through the door.  I took 3 of them out and had just a sliver of health left but the other two were not coming into the room.  I tried to wait them out but after 4 minutes of waiting I decided they weren't going away and busted out my best Clint Eastwood impersonation.  Unfortunately, it was current 80 year old man Clint Eastwood and I died rapidly.  Fortunately, it spawns you at your ship with the sentinels no longer angry at you.

Found my corpse, looted it, and then started exploring the building.  Got back to the room I was holed up in and started to investigate the devices.  Turns out, one was a health pod and the other provided an overshield.  Too little, too late.  The kicker, the only other thing in the entire camp was a locked door that I couldn't destroy.  No cool tech or anything.

By this time it was past late and I had to wake up early.  I got back into my ship (which autosaves your progress) and logged out for the night.  Overall, so far it's been really fun but of course it will be the first week or so when everything is new.  We'll see if I'm still going a month from now.

 
Thanks for the update Kanil.  That sounds a lot more intriguing and a lot less dissapointing.  I sense this game's enjoyment may depend a lot on the first planet or two you encounter?  If you don't find something interesting, it could get old quick?

Apparently you can get off the planet pretty quickly.  One of the people we were talking to in chat left his planet in the first 10 minutes and realized the reason his sucked so much was because he was right next to the sun.  He flew to a planet a little further away and found some cool stuff.

 
The initial "in progress" reviews are all about the same. The single biggest question I have is will the experience change* as you move forward and progress or will you be stuck in the upgrade hamster wheel forever.

A huge space-based minecraft sounds awesome, but I hope there is some sort of end game.

*will there be new things to do or will it still be resource gathering / trading / exploring? Will combat change as you progress? I think I read something about "bases" and large freighters being added, is there an end game?

From everything I understand the game will be updated often with new things to do, creatures, etc. Ongoing support is a huge feature for keeping the game viable for years to come.

I will be starting my journey this evening. I am pretty excited.

 
No Mans Sky sounds pretty cool so far. As far as the overall plot, I thought I had read that minor spoiler: 

there was a mystery involving the Sentinel's to explore and figure out.

I don't think there will be a traditional "end game". This is a non linear type of sandbox game where you just live in the universe. It's about exploration, discovery, piracy, trade and survival in an alternate universe.

Basically Star Trek......solo. The journey ends when you decide not to power it up again.

Sorry, I didn't mean a traditional "end game." I meant a sandbox endgame. Like Minecraft and the End Portal / Stronghold, etc.

If there isn't a point to the resource gathering and upgrades (other than to get you to the next set of resources and upgrades) I can't see playing it for very long.

Perhaps they will add in layers as they go along.

Upgrades allow you to handle bigger baddies, resource gathering to craft and trade and make a lot more $$$ I heard there are several factions and tons of alien races to discover and align with. And of course you will be involved in space battles etc. So having a ship/multi-tool/weapon that can handle things is crucial.

Reaching the center of the universe is a main goal. But the point of the Journey is not to arrive.

Just hit my funny bone.  I would have done the exact same thing, I've just never played a game where it was an option.

Keep the updates coming.  Very intriguing.
