Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (9 Viewers)

Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition is available on consoles now.  Looks interesting.  I played Baldur's Gate back in the day and loved it.  Looking forward to trying it

Purchased it but I am so deep into Path of Exile that I am not sure when it will see the light of day.

For two RPG games initialed POE, they could not be more different.

In Path, you set up everything ahead of time and then spend the game play just blasting things.

In Pillars, you have to think through almost every engagement, lots of pausing and consideration during fights.

Both great games but significantly different mind sets.  You might kill more guys in 10 minutes of Path than you kill in 40 hours of Pillars.

Yeah I LOVED the Baldurs gate and Icewind games. Very much looking forward to Pillars once I get stuck in PoE.

Same here.

At some point, I might need some help with equipment and gem combos from you or NewR. I've been following a tornado-shot build and dropping my passives where they need to go; however, I'm absolutely not utilizing the best gear/gem combos for this stage of the game (think I'm 34 at this point and just recently entered the Act III map). My stash has been upgraded with a half-dozen tabs and is chock full of yellow and orange items. I'd sell some of it, but still don't have quite the understanding to know whether or not I need to possibly keep something for another build down the road.

I am on a tornado build right now. If you are playing on xbox let me know and I can hand over some stuff to you.

Not sure what build you are following (I am doing my own thing) but I am going with high crit. I destroy pretty much everything in my path. I run with an ice golem, poachers mark, and blood rage and have little trouble with anything thats not boss level. make sure you get flasks that get rid of any chill/freeze effects. Thats the only issue I had early on

I just did the math and I've been playing Path of Exile 6 of the 8 months so far this year.  The last time I spent so much time in one game was back when WoW first came out.

Finally finished my first run through XCOM 2.  It took me 38 missions, but that was at a leisurely pace.  I was playing on normal difficulty, and while it was challenging at first, by the end my squad was completely OP and roflstomping everything unfortunate enough to cross my path.

So I started a new game on Commander difficulty and dear god is that a big step up in difficulty.  Part of is that the small amount of extra health that enemies have means that you can't auto-kill them with grenades, which is huge in the early game.  But more important is that the enemies apparently have clairvoyance, because I seem to be triggering enemy pods from halfway across the map and ending up with two groups attacking me at once on a fairy regular basis, no matter how careful I am.  I'm freely resorting to save-scumming when I feel like I get a horse#### enemy spawn out of nowhere, so I'm still making good progress, but I honestly don't get how you're supposed to do this on Ironman at this level, because it's just way too easy for things to go completely sideways nearly at random.  I know it's do-able because I'm watching videos of people doing it, but goodness gracious.  It seems like there needs to be a difficulty between Veteran and Commander, with may the same enemy health as Commander but the same enemy line of sight as Veteran.

Edit: Really excellent game though.  This is a fantastic follow-up to Enemy Unknown.

I would be happy to help.  do you have a specific question?

In general unless the yellow gear has tier 1 types stats, you should vendor it or drop it.  Each unique has to be judged on its own.

If you are playing on console, this is much trickier to determine.  on pc I can make a couple of key strokes and immediately determine the value of an item.

======================================

can you lay out your gems for me in terms of how they are linked and let me know what class you are playing?

As a very rough order of what a build should look like, you want the following:

1 aoe spell,

1 single target spell

2 auras,

1 movement spell,

1 vaal buff,

and a defensive gem setup (commonly immortal call linked with CWDT)

In general, for characters, flasks always get 1 of the following mods:

1 to remove burning

1 to remove freeze

Those are the two worst ailments.  These mods are easy to get, just use transmutes/alt's until you get what you want.

Just want to reiterate that for a lot of people, PoE is much more approachable at the beginning if you follow a proven build. There are tons to choose from and it will keep you from making mistakes on the skill tree that aren't easily reversible or setting your character up to require expensive uniques for the end game.

The alternative is to just wing it but you'll need to be ok with hitting a wall at some point either defensively or offensively if you choose this path. Personally I don't like investing in a character knowing it'll hit a wall at some point.

Ok, your post got me to reinstall Enemy Unknown on my XB1. I only played it for a few hours when I got it on games with gold and got busy. I'll give it another try.

I had problems with it at first. And definitely got some bad, game ending breaks on Ironman. But after awhile, it became sort of like Normal in that I was pretty well able to make it to the end game without much difficulty. I rarely finished though as, TBH, I dislike the final mission. Just to dang long. But when you get there, be ready for a tough fight. You'll never be fighting only one group of enemies.

And I totally disagree with this. You are going to hit a wall either way because you will not have the currency or the gear to advance far enough. Learn the game, learn the play style you like and let the gear you get dictate your next few characters types. Selling and Trading on the Xbox is far different than the PC thus you are going to be a bit more dependent on yourself for gear.Your first char will not be your best and it more than likely will not be your favorite. What makes this game so great IMO is the building of a character through a great skill tree, so learn it, enjoy it and don't worry about making the "best" character you can until you learn the game.

If you want an easier start, IMO start with a tanky type build. 1h Weapon, Shield, get lots of life, lots of armor and lots of elemental resists.

Anyone else playing NBA 2k18?  I wanna hear your thoughts on the new MyCareer.
Yes, have been playing this a bit.  I'm not super far into the MyCareer, but so far I am liking it.  I wouldn't say I'm totally immersed in the story (I never am in these things), but I like the layout of the city.  I can see getting tired of having to walk down the street to do this or that, but for now I think it is a neat idea.  I really wish you could skip the cut scenes, as I don't really want to have to sit through the same scenes over and over with different players.

Started as a point guard, but switched up to a post scoring/defending center.  I think the biggest upgrade they have made is blocks on defense.  In the last game, you could pretty much go for blocks without penalty in the post.  Now, if you are out of position and go for a block, you will get hit with a foul more often, which I think improves the reality.  I am still working on the shooting bar, and I can't for the life figure out whey they needed to change it.  It seems when you are shooting free throws on an away game, and the stadium is rocking, I find the bar hard to see.  It doesn't pop up right away, and I'm still not used to it being in a slightly different spot than I'm used to so the timing is tough.

I actually saw the shooting team get an offensive rebound on a missed free throw for the first time ever in my 2k playing days (I've been playing this since the first one with Jordan on the cover, 2k11?).

Subbing system is slightly different.  It drives me nuts you can't make a lineup switch easily between quarters like you could in 2k17.

Graphics keep getting better as far as the face scans of the real players.  It keeps getting better every year.  This year it really seems like all the players are relatively the same size, which is strange.  My 7'3" doesn't really tower over 6'5" shooting guards as much as he should.

Open shots are overpowered, at least in the pvp games I have played.  The pick n roll, then pass to the open player (who is left when weak side help slides to the lane) is unstoppable.  But, as least they reduced the ability to just speed boost past everyone for easy drives to the basket.  I'm guessing only the best ball handlers with speed can do this now (aka Westbrook, etc).  Wiggins was a beast in the last game with his speed, size and vertical, but not so much in this game.

Bottom line, despite my minor complaints, well worth the money as ever, and I'll be playing this constantly until COD comes out.

I know you disagree and that's ok.  There's no right or wrong way to play, especially a game like this.  The one part of your post that I will say is wrong, however, is the notion that you won't learn the game by following a build guide. The complete opposite is actually true.  I'm positive I learned the game much faster by following a build than I would have putzing around on my own.  Think of a build guide as a teacher teaching a class vs. you just diving into the course material on your own trying to learn it. PoE is a complex game that requires a good knowledge of the mechanics to go far. A good build guide will teach you these things, not just say "choose these nodes, then click this button, etc."  It's not about making the best character right from the get go.  No starting player can do this anyway because the "best" characters require gear that costs hundreds of chaos orbs.

The approach of just going at it on your own from the start has frustrated many players because of walls they hit that simply aren't necessary.  I feel people just starting should know that in case they don't plan on making character after character going through the same content over and over just to learn the game.

All most every char hits a wall. Your first char is at a sever disadvantage compared to your next char and  each one following. Players will still get frustrated by hitting a wall when following a guide because they simply will not have the gear and or currency to get far with that character.  As for learning...what you are talking about when following a build guide can be accomplished by reading and studying about the game which should be done anyway. My point is not to worry about your first character, its simply not that important.

Starting characters absolutely can make it far with the right build and don't have to hit a frustrating wall before end game.  There are many starter builds that can go as far as Atziri/Shaper/Guardians that only use rare equipment that is easy to get.  That's why they are labeled starter builds.  They are meant for people new to the game to learn the mechanics and also have a viable character.

Man, PUBG really is just so intense when you get down to the last 10 or so.

Just finished 3rd but I absolutely should have won. I had great gear and the last circle was closing in from my front (so I didn't risk getting shot from behind) I even had a ghille suit from some dude i had just killed.

But I made the stupid decision of having my M416 with a 4x scope out instead of my SCAR (which I had on single shot). Spotted one of the remaining 2 crawling but the recoil on the gun was too big with that much zoom and my shots were all over the place. Absolutely should have known better, as it had nearly burned me in another fire fight a few minutes earlier.  I think I was kinda hoping that the other 2 would run into eachother while trying to make the circle and that I could just mop up. Should have gone for more precision. Sucks to let one get away (still only have the 1 win)

The game really sucks when you get bad luck with the drop or the circles and spend your entire round just sprinting trying to stay alive with nobody in sight. But at its best, this game really is awesome. My heart is still pounding 10 minutes later.

I want to play, just don't have a pc to run it. I use a MacBook for spreadsheets and such and my XB1 for games. I'll get it when it comes out on XB1 later this year. Fortnite has a free battle royale mode coming out next week. I'll give it a go.

@NewlyRetired this was the deck I was playing.  I came back since they nerfed Druid a little.

It seems really strong if you unlocked Keleseth.  I don't know the deck yet, or the record would be 12-3 - I missed lethal by 1 on 2 different priests and they came all the way back on me.  Enjoy it.  Keleseth Rogue Record

I am familiar with this deck as I see it all the time being played on ladder and by the streamers.  But I am missing 4 of the legendary's and only have enough dust for 2 of them.

If I acquire a little more dust I may try to craft 3 of the legendaries I am missing and just try and replace Xaril as that appears the least important of the 6 legendaries in the deck.

Would you agree Xaril is the least important of the 6?

100% replace with a Hallucination maybe.  Or even an elemental (Fire Plume Phoenix)

I'm wondering if Fallout 4 VR is worth the $500+ it'll cost to play it.

I played the lone Battlefront VR X-wing mission on PS4 and was utterly blown away. What amazing potential. If they do F04 right, it could be incredible.

But all the money for the VR setup and  another $60 for the VR version of F04?

Urg.

I've been planning to wait a few generations before even considering VR. But thinking what FO4 could be like in VR sure creates temptation.

I'd get it for the PC for several reasons, chief among them if EFF Bethesda and paid mods (which are exclusive on consoles, but optional on PC).

I kind of had the same idea you did.  How cool would that be?

Most of the games are overpriced shovelware and the cost/logistics of VR games and setup are just too much for me.  Bethesda's FO4 game would probably have movement similar to the teleportation mechanic.  It just isn't there yet.

The teleport mechanics in games suck. Why can’t they just let you hold a button down to move forward?  I don’t really even want to move, just let me be fully immersed and still have my controller.  My brother has a Vive and it’s fun for a few, but I can’t imagine using is it for long.

Have you played the Battlefront VR mission? It's amazing. Limited, but amazing.
I have never played VR, sadly.  I have an ok midrange graphics card but I doubt it's strong enough to run any of them at a good framerate.

Yeah, I don't get that either.  I'd almost rather have it that way where it's just a headset and M&K/controller.  I'd rather not mess with learning a new peripheral.

I just don't know what I feel about going VR in these huge games.  I have said a couple times I'd kill for a full xwing/tie fighter VR game, especially since you don't need to worry about movement, just controls and looking around.  As I said I think the controls and the mission style gameplay would lend itself to VR.  I really can't imagine one of my multi-hour FO sessions wearing VR glasses, and just losing that outside world connectivity.  Just kinda weirds me out, don't know what else to say.

I also have concerns about movement controls with VR, I don't really know how they work.

I've finally returned to gaming and have about 20 rounds of PUBG under my belt.  I love it. It's super intense and anytime I get a kill it feels like the best thing ever.  The best I've finished is 12th twice and both times I went out like a dummy: running out of ammo, chasing guys around blind corners, engaging too early when I had the element of surprise, etc.   I haven't played enough to know the gear or the map layout and I find the inventory system to be a disaster. But it's such a good time.  I've been focused on dropping in on the school as my default start so I can get used to an area and navigating out from there.  It seems to be a popular zone as well so I get some early firefights in before the enemy has superior gear.

Have you guys done any squad games?  I'd like to give that a whirl.

Taking a break from PoE and loading up Wolfenstein: New Order and it's expansion for a replay before the next game comes out at the end of October.  Fitting times to be playing a game where you kill Nazis.

The X-wing VR I played was on a PS4 and it's great. You're an X-wing in a small squadron escorting a larger vessel through an asteroid belt. When you come out of the belt, a star destroyer jumps in front of you and a squad of Tie-Fighters come out. You have full movement control then, throttle, etc. It's freaking awesome.

Battlefront II is supposed to come with several VR missions.

Titanfall 2 ultimate edition is on sale for Xbox Gold members for $20. It's probably worth it at that price even for a single player gamer, right?

Went back to a VERY old game (PC) that has just been released on Steam.  WWIIOnline.  This game has outdated graphics (by a decade), and an incredibly steep learning curve.  But man, it is fun once you get into it.  if you're a fan of team play and strategy, and don't care too much about graphics, and are a fan of the WWII genre, it could be a good game for you.

I played it when it came out way back in 2001 for a few years, dropped it because of life, and went back to it occasionally.

It has so many things you can do.  And so many different types of each.  You can drive a tank, a truck, re-supply, fly a fighter plane, a bomber, get on a boat or destroyer, man an AA or AT gun, parachute from a plane, destroy bridges, build bridges, dig foxholes, use a bazooka, capture spawn points or army bases.  All things are player driven. Small amount (miniscule) ai that guard far away cities from attack while the map is progressing.  You can play German, French, British, and American (American army only right now).

It has so many things you can do.  And so many different types of each.  You can drive a tank, a truck, re-supply, fly a fighter plane, a bomber, get on a boat or destroyer, man an AA or AT gun, parachute from a plane, destroy bridges, build bridges, dig foxholes, use a bazooka, capture spawn pints or army bases.  All things are player driven. Small amount (miniscule) ai that guard far away cities from attack while the map is progressing.  You can play German, French, British, and American (American army only right now).

I used to play this, but I remember the hit detection being incredibly bad, walking miles and miles before reaching any action only to immediately get one shot.  That said I still had fun.  My favorite was to walk to an enemy town where nothing was happening, hide somewhere, and then watch dozens of people spawn and try to find me wondering where the invasion was coming from.
