Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

had a free day and was feeling a little nostalgic, so i fired up Borderlands 2 this morning. got in a good 7+ hours and might head back in after MNF.

some really funny dialogue in this game that i forgot about. also, i somehow had three Golden Keys when i started, and spent one when i got to Sanctuary around Lvl10. elemental weapons make such a huge difference, especially at lower levels. still not a big fan of the slag feature, but whatever. found a Legendary grenade mod in a bullymog pile, which spawns 8 grenades after the initial explosion. crowd control is now a non-issue.
BL2 is such a well-written game. BL3 is supposed to come out next year.

Slag isn't really needed until future playthroughs. Then it becomes a must.

For active Golden Keys, scroll all the way to the bottom of this page:

My wife grabbed me one as a surprise. It’s pretty nice.  We don’t have a 4K tv yet, but I can still see a difference. Everything is substantially smoother and more crisp. It’s also super fast compared to my old XB1. In every multiplayer cod match, the maps load and I’m the first one in the game by a good 5-6 seconds.
I really like the controller as well, but it hasnt help me suck any less at CoD

Yeah I’m not very good either. The maps are kind of frustrating too... they’re so small and cramped. I miss the maps from World at War that we’re large and allowed you to go a few feet without getting shot in the back. I feel like they figured the only way to not lose the ADD wall running crowd was if they crammed everyone into a shoebox where everyone just gets slaughtered.  I’m still liking it ok, but it’s not as enjoyable as I was hoping.

On the XB1X, so far so good. Now I just need to wipe my old one and figure out the best way to swap it for a PS4. I don’t need a new PS4, but really want to play Bloodborne, Nioh, and a few other games.

Best Buy's Black Friday ad features several good games at good prices. I may re-buy the new Uncharted but will definitely get Wolfenstein 2.

If anyone sees some good deals on PS4 bundles with Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up, would appreciate a heads up!

May also consider an XoneX and trading in my existing XBONE for credit on a PS4 as some mentioned on here before.

If you figure out the best way to do this, let me know. Thinking EBay - looks to be fetching maybe $150.

PS4 1TB will be $200 on BF at Best Buy. That's $100 off.

The Titanfall 2 campaign is top notch. Not sure I’ve ever played a better FPS single player campaign. It’s probably not the best in class in any one category, but the total package is flawless. Highly recommend for the single player gamers out there - we’ll worth $20 or whatever it’s selling at.

Just picked up Uncharted Lost Legacy for $20

i know it's short and that's perfect for me.  Almost halfway in.  Really  dig it

Played Prey for about an hour. Feels like Bioshock meets SOMA.

Seems like another overly complex gather/inventory/craft system that spoils, for the casual gamer, another potentially interesting game.
I loved it but that was when it wasn't a chore to gather things and you could use a glitch to recycle as much as you wanted. It was a bit of a pain to do so but if I didn't have the ammo reserves I did not sure I would have ever finished it. I did think the end was awesome though.

Half Life 2 was the best I have played and nothing has come close since.  Might have to check out Titanfall 2.

Yeah, that's what I always did in years past also. Wish I had held on to those older consoles now though for the nostalgia factor.

People have posted in years past about places like Gamestop having big trade in deals, maybe something like that will come out as well.

I was enjoying the Titanfall 2 campaign a lot last Spring, and then they did an update where they erased all of my progress.  I was 2/3 through that thing and it was gone.  I walked away out of sheer anger at the company for doing that.  No way to pick it back up or start at an unlocked level at all, gone.  Don't think I will buy another of their games for that infraction.

This new Wolfenstein game sounds pretty intense. Apparently it has a pretty good “Holy crap!” moment in the story.

Of course my son wants a Nintendo Switch for Christmas. Not sure I'm ready to shell out all that money for one great game (I already have Zelda for Wii U)

COD WWII is good, as far as the campaign goes.  But it needs to be slowed down a bit.  Still plays way too fast. I prefer the BF series because of that.

This is looking like another year where I pick up enough games for <$30 to carry me through the summer at least.  Evil Within 2, Wolfenstein 2, Nier Automata, Middle Earth, and maybe the Bioshock collection.

Really considering getting the COD WWII game for Christmas.  I've always loved nostalgic war games.  The first meaningful war game I played was Medal of Honor: Frontline on my Gamecube and it blew my mind.

Yeah mine says he wants one too.  Don't think he's getting one.  He's already getting an Xbox One S from grandpa... don't think he needs 2 new systems, especially since he'll still spend the bulk of his time playing Roblox or watching YouTube

Does anyone have a good list of the best war game campaigns?  Most games get more credit for their multiplayer which is great but I really like to be submerged in a great campaign mode.

Man the new xcom 2 expansion is incredibly hard. Thought I had gotten over the hump last night and got squad wiped in a retaliation mission. It was a cryssalid mission and it looks like they've been buffed in the expansion (10 health plus a point of armor). Plus any time you walk within like 15 tiles of one that is burried, they get a free move (on your turn) to run halfway across the nap and hit you for 5 damage (plus a chance of posion)

I sort of screwed up a little by being late to heavy armor ( I was 2 days away when this mission popped) but when you combine those cryssalids with one of the chosen showing up, it was unwinnable. Back to the start again, but I probably need a break. Too frustrated right now with all the new mechanics of the expansion.

Does it matter how old the game is?  Or if it's WWII, Modern, or Space?

I prefer historical games that cover WWI and WWII but doesn't have to be.  Just a great war experience that really makes you feel it.

The start to Medal of Honor: Frontline was and experience like no other game for me.  I really love shows and movies about past wars so I prefer those.  Would be great to have a game like Band of Brothers series.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the first thing that jumps to my mind. The one with Reznov.

Bad Company 2 might have a Band if Brother vibe but it’s been a long time since I played it.

Not many WWI games out there.  BF1 is about it, and it is excellent.  WWII, choose any, I think most are good as far as campaign.  The Red Orchestra series is good.

If you want to go old school, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault might have the best campaign.  Follow that up with the original CoD and CoD2.  Older, but good and fun campaigns.

Of course, the new Wolfenstein also hits the WW2 bug pretty hard for a while.

One week in and I freakin love the Switch.

Has been so easy to break up the controllers for 4-person Mario Kart, and Odyssey is great. Will be picking up BotW soon I'm sure. Most importantly, the ability to play on flights is amazing. Very pleased with the decision to pick one up.

Really thinking about getting the LA Noire remaster tomorrow. In theory, the game should be one of my favorite games of all time, but it never really grabbed me when I had it on 360. I’m wondering if I’m more in that mindset now because I love the time period and the themes.

That game was just a disappointment to me.  I really do love that LA mobster timeframe, and was excited for the game.  First, I never "got" the interrogation thing, I know it was supposed to be a visual thing reading facial and vocal expressions, but I just never caught on.  I went with if you have proof agree or disagree appropriately and if not the middle push harder option and it just made me right 90% of the time.  Those interrogations were supposed to be this huge tech advance, and I never caught it.  Second the game made me a little angry that I could tell the investigations were not correct, and there seemed to be huge holes that were just ignored, and I didn't feel the characters were realizing or reacting to that, maybe I mind that less in a movie where I feel like an observer, but in a game I'm supposed to feel like I'm a part of it, and just didn't.

the new COD does a pretty good jump of making you feel like you are playing in a unit. You move through the story with a group of characters. They have perks you can use.

I fairly impressed with the campaign so far (crawling through it on veteran mode).

I just finished the first Shadow of Mordor game this weekend. Great game but that ending boss fight was anticlimactic and big let down. I was hoping to do some hacking and slashing on the bad guy. Instead I have to sneak around.
The graug boss battle was much better.
I guess I'll do all the DLC stuff now and see if I can get 100% completion this week.

Bought this for $5. I’ll get to it at some point, but in my quick 30 mins with it, it wasn’t what I was looking for at the time.

Yeah I pretty much agree with all of that. I really want to like it though, I kinda want to try again. I still have the 360 version so I’d feel stupid buying it but it does have the dlc.

It's worth playing, but don't expect Half-Life 2 level (my own opinion).  The only games I've found that even comes remotely close to HL2 is the Bioshock series.  Although the new Wolfenstein series and the Metro series are pretty good too if you're looking for single player campaign experiences.

You didn't state whether it has to be shooters, but if you like real-time strategy games and have a PC, you can't go wrong with Company of Heroes.

Call of Duty 2 was the best CoD, IMO.  I hear the new one comes close, but I haven't purchased another Activision game since Modern Warfare 2 and don't plan on breaking that streak yet.

Not sure if this is the right thread to discuss this: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/star-wars-battlefront-2s-microtransactions-are-a-r/1100-6454825/

Seems that EA has created quite the scam here. They allow you to purchase crates that they hold the power to decide what types of “credits” you get to make in game purchases. I’m not a hardcore gamer by any means but buyer beware here.
In general, the entire microtransactions, DLC, and $100 digital Uber deluxe versions of games need to die.  I get that games are more expensive to make nowadays, but the entire upsell practice is not a good look. Normally I wait til later in a games lifecycle to buy it for $5, but that’s tough to do in multiplayer games.

Game that did DLC correctly - Fortnite: game is free and I’ve got maybe 30 hours in it. There is no need to pay anything to play the game at all, however, if you want to wear a different hat or other cosmetic item you pay a few bucks. I don’t personally partake, but it doesn’t affect the game, so I don’t care.

Game that did DLC okay - Rainbow Six Siege. I paid full price for the game.  They do release a free map every few months and new operators (players).  I can pay $60 to unlock the operators, but I can also earn them on my own. It does take awhile and somewhat affects gameplay, but at least the maps are free.

Game that did DLC horribly for me - Little Nightmares. Little Nightmares is a game I bought new ($30) because it looked like Limbo and Inside which are amazing. The game was just okay, not great, but the real problem is that I found out afterwards that they were releasing additional levels for another $15 less than two months after release. Also, the game was literally a 3 hour game...

https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=39417

How can someone possibly justify calling 3 hours of play a full game when they obviously have more content ready to roll out?   Also that DLC is supposed to only take an hour more. Ripoff.

bottomline, if I don’t need an active multiplayer community to enjoy the game, I’m waiting. There are a few exceptions like Fallout, the new Last of Us when it comes out, and Souls games, but that’s about it.  The most fun I’ve had in the past year was Fortnite (free) and Rocket League ($20).

One of the (several) reasons I stopped buying madden is  The whole gold card thing and randomness of being able to play or unlock legendary players. Players like Ed Reed and Emmitt Smith are only playable if you purchase a random pack of cards and you get lucky. Even then you can only play them for a few games.

It used to be the game companies added features to entice players to buy the game. Now certain franchise have gotten so big that the leverage is in the game designers hands. We need to take that leverage back but not purchasing games that have this pay to play model.

Obviously the idea of Pay to Win SUCKS. But when you consider that they're giving away all the DLC for free, (Free maps is a pretty big deal because it keeps the community from getting fragmented) I get it. Gotta monetize the additional content somehow. For the life of me, I can't figure out how developers make back the money for developing AAA title by selling cosmetic items. That being said, it seems like Star Wars went over the line here. You can basically buy your to completely unfair advantages like 30% more damage in a X-Wing. That's just blatant garbage.

The only reason I hate microtransacations is that they've kinda ruined sports games for me. Instead of putting time and money into franchise mode (which is the only reason I used to buy sports games), EA and 2K develop these stupid MyPlayer and Ultimate Team modes so people will pay for power up cards and player packs to win online.

I've already paid for Star Wars Battlefront II.  This time, I didn't feel let down by the beta and while it exists, I don't feel like it's going to be as big a deal as people are letting on.  I won't pay any extra for any of the loot crates.  If I have to get them by playing the game, then I'm fine with that.  If you don't like it, don't pay for it.  But don't be surprised to never see another Star Wars game if you decide to do an all-out boycott because of one stupid "feature" that's completely optional.

That said.  Anyone else getting the PC version?

I liked LA Noire. It could have been better but I enjoyed it.  I still think that the mission with the bad guy in the catacombs of the church was one of the best missions I've ever played in a video game.   The mission itself, the music, the setting, it was as tense as any movie to me.

That’s just wrong. They payed probably a lot of money for those exclusive rights and likely aren’t going to abandon making games if it is vocally boycotted for them making the game with bad intentions. On top of that, Disney is likely to freak out if this game generates a bunch of negative attention to the Star Wars franchise.

On the personal side, in a game that someone pays for they shouldn’t have to be at a disadvantage while playing if they don’t continue to pump money into it. And company’s (or other gamers) should not hold a franchise hostage with “buy our butchered version that we designed to rip you off or it’s gone.” Even the idea of that makes me not want to buy the game. There’s too many good games make by good companies to pull that kind of nonsense anymore.

I'm just passing along the same thing I read on one of the video games news sites where it was said that if sales of Battlefront II is bad, then the license is in jeopardy.  I hope not and I hope it's not true.  Negative word of mouth has killed many good franchises before. It'll take more than a few dozen of boycotters, but guys like Angry Joe, et all have tons of reach and are already ####ting on the game (and none of them have touched the final release - only going by a couple of Reddit posts from someone claiming to have it).

I loved the game play from the beta, and I can't wait to play the campaign.  I don't love micro-transactions, but I don't plan on paying another penny on those.  I'm fine with boycotting those, but a lot of people are saying they won't touch the game and that's where I feel that it could prove bad for the franchise.  Dice isn't the one saying "Yep, what we need are some loot crates".  That's all on EA.  Seems like all of their games are on it.  That's what sucks and needs a good kick in the rear.  My copy is already paid for, so I'm really going in with full optimism and I really hope I'm not let down.
