For any old school CRPG geeks, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is about as close to Baldur's Gate II as any game has ever gotten. It has that same epic scope, all kinds of voiced NPC's/party members, and the combat works extremely well - it's both real-time-with-pause and turn based, and can be seamlessly switched on the fly, even in the middle of a battle. This is great for quick battles against weak mobs - just let your party chew them up quickly in real time, but for other tougher battles you can switch back and forth at will.
It also has a separate "crusader" mode which is similar to the battles in Heroes of Might and Magic III (it's HOMMIII-lite). Basically before your adventuring party can access new areas, your armies need to go capture forts and drive away demon armies. This part is basic but fun (HOMM vets will steamroll through it), but if you don't like it you can let the game completely manage it.
The game is on both PC and console. I had ignored it for awhile because the previous Pathfinder game (Kingmaker) had a billion bugs on console, with no fixes. Come to find out the developer doesn't have the rights to it, and the publisher has zero interest, so it was abandoned. But this one is solid, and has had a ton of support. There are a few things I don't like (the resting mechanic is annoying), and I am somewhat unfamiliar with the "Pathfinder" system (but it was spawned from DnD, and is close enough with many of the same spells/feats/etc). Its held my interest enough to make me put off my planned Diablo 4 purchase until I finish it.
I loved BG2 back in the day, and tried all the clones since then - this one is the best by far. The Divinity Original Sin games are good, but lack the same character development as BG2 had, plus every battle is pure turn based so they can take awhile (#2 also annoyed me because every battle felt like an exploding barrel puzzle). The Pillars of Eternity games... meh, the combat just wasn't fun. I am looking forward to BG3, but it's by the Divinity folks, and I'm somewhat hoping it's not the same "exploding barrel" puzzle-fest.
