Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (6 Viewers)

Just purchased a 2nd PS5 since I moved my son's PS5 into his room last year. Catching up on games I missed this year.

Spiderman 2 was incredible experience. A bit shorter than I expected though.

Next up Resident Evil 4, Star Wars Survivor, Alan Wake 2, and then I think Im going to finally give Elden Ring a shot.

That's alot of fun in front of you. Only one of those I haven't played and beaten is Alan wake.

I'd be interested in opinions on Alan Wake 2. I just played the original last year and liked it a lot. I'm probably going to auto-buy the sequel but will probably wait for a sale since it's SP.

been playing blasphemous 1 and 2. never heard of these when these came out. these are great old school metroidvanias. highly recommend if you like the genre
Those are pretty cool games but I’m simply done with the genre. There is Super Metroid and then everything else is just a bad copy.

I replay super Metroid every 5-10 years, but can't get into any other version. The problem is even though I have beaten super Metroid many times I still get lost in the map occasionally. No way I want to try and learn a new map.

Symphony of the night

Touché. OK,

Super Metroid and symphony of the night.

Anybody playing Baldur's Gate? I'm thinking about my Christmas present to myself being a new PS5 with Spider Man 2 package, then buying the newer Horizon Zero Dawn and Baldur's Gate 3.

what kind of game is it?
Horror, made by the same people who made Control (Remedy). Think a weirder, trippy version of RE4.

I am playing this now - I played the base game awhile back when it was on gamepass and really liked it. I saw the ultimate edition with 2 DLC's for like $10 and got it. Super fun game with some awesome powers.

Even though I just started Starfield, I’m looking forward to buying BG3 as soon as it comes out on Xbox next month.
How is Starfield? Is it better than no man’s sky?
It’s a totally different experience. It is basically Fallout 4 in space. There is some exploration but it’s not nearly as open ended as No Man’s Sky in terms of freedom of movement and it’s not dependent on you running around mining a bunch of materials and crafting stuff (though you can do that if you want). There’s lots of quests and dialog and that sort of thing. I’m enjoying it well enough so far (10-12 hours in or so) but it’s not as immediately engaging as other Bethesda titles have been.

I will buy any game Remedy puts out:

Max Payne 1 & 2
Alan Wake
Quantum Break
&
Control

Just haven’t had time to get to Alan Wake 2 yet. Their games may not be everyones cup of tea or perfect, but they are always pushing the boundaries of gameplay and have absolutely amazing storytelling.

Control is a fantastic game in a very weird way. There's a music video featuring Dr. Darling toward the end, that I still occasionally watch on YouTube from time to time because it's just so funny,

Also, for those that don't know this already, Control and Alan Wake are set in the same universe.

Never played any of these. Added to list

Started Ghost of Tsushima a few weeks ago on the upgraded Director's Cut PS5 version.

Holy crap this is one of the best games I've ever played, period. And it looks absolutely outstanding on the PS5. Don't know how it took me this long to get to playing it.
I could never get that far into it. Some of these open world games just feel like checklists to me and this is one of them. I wish that wasn’t the case. It really is gorgeous.

GTA 6 trailer just released.

2025
One of the main reasons I still have the XBOX. Son is beyond XBOX and does CPU gaming with his buddies now. I can't play like I used to, but will definitely grab this when it comes out. I enjoy the open world games

Kinda hard to get excited about a new GTA when you know they're going to spend the next 12 years milking it dry. This and Elder Scrolls really typify how this industry has changed over the past couple of generations.

I know what you mean but isn’t that better than releasing a “new” game every year like EA/Madden?

Sure. But it's worth noting that the exact same thing killed both GTA and Madden -- the need to capture every possible dollar from the in-game store. That's why Madden releases as a brand new game every year instead of just downloading a roster patch, and it's why Rockstar makes their multiplayer experience intentionally tedious. EA wants you to rebuy your DLC and Rockstar wants you buying shark cards. Neither has any incentive to invest in a decent SP experience.

Agree. I never do any of that stuff but we’re probably in the minority.

I just wish somebody would make a good co-op RPG that isn’t a MMO.

Top 5 of all time for me. Absolutely epic.

Gorgeous game, music, acting the works. Enjoy!!!

This did not feel like that for me.....it was a total adventure looking for everything and taking in the entire world. I guess I love samurai movies from my childhood and this hit the right notes for me.

It depends what you mean by "RPG".

If you want a coop crafting game, then Don't Starve Together would get a strong recommend from me. If you want a coop story driven game we just got the best of these ever released in BG3.

Most people think of RPG as leveling up, getting better skills, and getting better loot. Rather than the role playing, ie story driven part.

I could have been more specific. I’m an old school RPG guy. I want traditional D&D monsters, swords and spells, no guns, and an epic quest….

They make a couple of these, but to my knowledge haven’t made a game where you can both exist in the same world, and get the same type of rewards/consequences and both can advance the story. Currently, whoever is the host advances the story, and the co-op player is just along for the ride. They’re more like a playable NPC.

That is BG3, but you are right there are not too many games in that genre.

I have never like the view/angle of those games (Not very immersive), but Ill check out the new one.

I think GTA6 is going to be a game changer and possibly not for the better. There is a lot of chatter that the price-point could be three figures for this game. I remember paying $29.99 for a game and thinking that was a lot and now it is pretty standard to pay $69.99. If GTA6 comes out at $149 or even $199, it is going to be interesting to see what that does to initial sales

**** that.

Never.....never for me will I ever pay that for a video game.

It's interesting because video games have been like the most inflation resistant thing in existence. I remember buying Mario 64 for $60 in 1996. A typical AAA game was still $60 up until about a year ago, almost 30 years later.

And it made me very sad to type that 1996 is "almost 30 years ago".

I have also learned to be extremely patient in waiting for blowout sales. I don’t have to have a game on release. The only two I bought this year on release were:

BG3 and boy what a game.

Madden 24 - Last time I ever buy Madden on release......I am finally done with yearly sports titles. I have been playing MLB The Show 20 for going on 5 straight years now and will not ever leave that one.

NBA 2K23 will be my go to basketball game for years and years.

So yeah.......I typically get all my AAA games under $25 now and as low as $2-$5 lol. It pays to wait.

It's funny how inflation has hit everything except video games for the most part. I remember paying $59.99 for SNES games in 1992. It's crazy how that's been the price for so long. In today's dollars, that's over $140.

Gaming really is the most ridiculously good value there is in enjoyment for the money by so, so much.

Between F2P games like Rocket League that I still play regularly, and Xbox Game Pass which comes out to like $3/mo with the right deals, it's amazing to get so much enjoyment out of something that costs so little.

It's crazy to think about. I'll drop $300 for an afternoon at the local theme park with the kids for like 4 hours of enjoyment, or $100+ for bowling or a movie these days for like an hour or two of fun.

I've probably not spent $300 on gaming in the last 3 years combined and over that time have gotten THOUSANDS of hours of enjoyment out of it.

I get what you’re saying and I agree for the most part. My pushback is there is nothing revolutionary about any of these games. FPS - every single one of them is the same, just different graphics.

The games look better but other than that, meh.

The next frontier is VR, but until they release a bumble that we can sit and and see in 360°, we ain’t there yet.

Good luck with that. I have more games in my backlog than I can possibly finish, and I know this game will still be widely-played and supported five years from now.

After seeing what they did with GTA5, why would you even consider buying GTA6 at launch?

Wait, what did they do with GTAV after launch? I recently replayed it and it was just as amazing.

I have backlogged games too, but there is a tier of game franchises that immediately get pushed to the front, and GTA is one of them.

Agreed. Why would I pay anybody $150 when I can buy games like Lethal Company for 10 bucks and have a blast?

Because I'm a grown man who can afford $60

I recall paying £40 for Mario 3 in 91 or 92 or whenever it came out over here. Quick Google indicates Breath of the Wild is £45 now. By the same token I paid £5.50 for the pint I'm drinking now and when I started drinking I was paying £1.60.

Of course manufacturing costs for cartridges was higher than optical media, but still

Yep. I think I paid $60 for a strategy game for the Sega Genesis - Pacific Theatre of Operations, back in the early 90's. I remember that specifically because it was $10 more than the other Nintendo games available and so it was a big ask. To someone else's point about surplus value, in the abstract I'd gladly pay $100+ for a AAA game that isn't going to hassle me with microtransactions and could definitely justify that in terms of time spent. But when I'm paying on average <$10/month for Game Pass and there are AAA games like Starfield, Far Cry 6 (coming this month), and dozens of other games I'm interested in at no additional cost, I'm very rarely going to spend even $40+ on a brand new game given the market.
