Vikings @ 49ers (1 Viewer)

(Sports Network) - Brett Favre will make his first appearance of the 2011 season on Sunday night, when the indecisive legend leads the Minnesota Vikings into preseason action against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. Two weeks after a flurry of national reports revealed that Favre was informing teammates of his retirement, the quarterback reported to the Vikings last Tuesday to commence his 20th NFL season. The 40-year-old will attempt to better the stunning performance he offered up in his first season in a Minnesota uniform last year, when he threw for 33 touchdowns with just seven interceptions for a team that was an overtime session away from reaching the Super Bowl.Favre, who is still recovering from offseason ankle surgery, is expected to play no more than a series or two on Sunday before yielding to backups Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. It was Rosenfels who did most of the heavy lifting in the Vikes' 28-7 win over the St. Louis Rams last Saturday, completing 23-of-34 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. On the injury front for Minnesota, wide receiver Percy Harvin is not expected to be in uniform following a scary episode on Thursday that saw him collapse on the practice field. Harvin, who has battled migraines throughout his life, was hospitalized overnight but is not expected to be out of the lineup for an extended period.Linebacker E.J. Henderson (leg) is a question mark for the Vikings on Sunday.Though Favre and the Vikings will hog most of the headlines, the 49ers will likewise be taking a step forward in a season that they hope will land them in the playoffs as well.Mike Singletary's club started the tune-up period off with a 37-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday, though quarterback Alex Smith (3-of-9, 37 yards, 1 INT) was not among the players who had much of an impact on the win.As he looks for improvement, Smith could be sharing the backfield on Sunday with recently-signed running back Brian Westbrook, who is competing with Anthony Dixon for the No. 2 tailback job.Dixon has a leg up after rushing 21 times for 100 yards and a touchdown against the Colts last week. The Vikings hold a 3-1 edge in their all-time preseason series with the 49ers, including a 23-10 home victory in the last such meeting, prior to the 2004 season. The teams last met in meaningful play in Week 3 of last season, a 27-24 Minnesota win at the Metrodome highlighted by a last-second touchdown pass from Favre to wideout Greg Lewis.

Talk about throwing the rookie into the fire....Dixon getting a lot of work against the Vikings first stringers. So far 5 carries for 7 yds, and 1 catch for 6 yards.

I dont mind all the Favre hype, its having a living legend playing. You guys who dont like it will miss it when its gone.

that TD run was very impressive! The kid looks like a player, despite the less than impressive stat line--his blitz pickup earlier in the drive was excellent- In a dynasty league he has value, especially with Gore's proclivity to get hurt.

That OL still cannot pass protect against Betty White. Favre won't last 8 games with that OL, they are the most overhyped OL in the entire NFL.

Yes, that was nice to see him wheel around the outside and score considering he is more of a banger.

Wow. That was a bomb
OH MY GOD! His throw prior to this I noticed he had a good arm and thoughts of the SF writer saying Nate Davis should be the QB came back into my mind.I watched Davis scramble into endzone and opened my eyes to see if he could launch it...HOLY F*kn COW!

It's been a while since I've seen a bomb on a rope like that. Geez. That was awesome. Rewound and watched that one a few times

Why would I miss him any more than I missed Elway, Young, Aikman, Marino, etc.?? Brady and Peyton are still around and will be for a few more seasons. He isn't the only "living legend" in the game.

Did Albert Young get 2 carries with the 1st team and sit after that? Or was he used as spell back only? Did Toby pass him on the depth chart?

Davis has talent, but the thing to be concerned about with him is his learning disability. I'm not saying he's dumb, nor am I saying people with learning disabilities can't produce. Far from it.

That said, I get the feeling the 49ers would like Davis to be their longterm backup. If Smith falters, I believe they would likely pursue someone else as their starter (whether in the draft, FA, or a trade). Davis is tough to roster because you're not sure if he'll ever get a legit shot. I guess it just depends on your situation (talking dynasty).

Singletary isn't showing much love for Davis.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nate Davis took a major step backward in his quest to earn the 49ers' backup quarterback job.

Davis' statistics certainly were not eye-popping. But his production alone was nothing to eliminate him from consideration for a job promotion. Instead, Davis did not fulfill the unseen requirements of the most important position on the field.

Davis completed 7 of 16 passing attempts for 114 yards in the 49ers' 15-10 exhibition victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night. The 49ers scored field goals on two of Davis' first three drives after entering the game at the start of the second half.

But it is clear that coach Mike Singletary considers Davis nowhere near ready to compete for the backup job behind starter Alex Smith.

"I don't think he's put himself in a position to really compete," Singletary said. "I think right now he's competing with himself. I really do.

"I really like the kid. There's a lot to like about him, But there is a work ethic that's involved in terms of being a quarterback in the NFL and he's got to get it. It's as simple as that."

David admittedly blew several protection calls. Singletary said Davis did not show the kind of consistency he wants to see. For instance, Singletary criticized Davis for not being aware of the first-down marker when he scrambled for 5 yards on a third-and-6 late in the game when the 49ers were trying to run out the clock.

Said Davis, "I did come in and I was a little shaky on some things I should've knew. I just got to keep on working hard."

Veteran David Carr did not play a snap, and it appears he strengthened his hold on the No. 2 job.

The problem, Singletary said, is that Davis did not invest enough time in the offseason to learn offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's system.

"I'm not sure how hard he worked in the offseason to get that down," Singletary said. "So when I talk about work ethic, you can't just turn it on and turn it off. . . . The offseason, when we're in OTAs and minicamp, that's when you have to get it done."

Davis spent the entire offseason at the 49ers' practice facility, but he admits he could have spent more time at work.

"To tell you the truth, I don't think I put in enough work as I should've," Davis said. "Yes, I did put in a lot of work, but maybe I should've put in more than I did."

When asked what he was doing when he was not at the team's practice facility in the offseason months, Davis said, "I was spending time with my little daughter."

There has never been any doubt that Davis throws the ball well enough to play in the NFL. His 60-yard pass to Ted Ginn was evidence of that. But mastering the mental part of the game is the biggest issue.

At Ball State, Davis had one protection for every pass play. At this level, he is trying to learn seven or eight different options, depending on the play call and the defense.

"I'm pulling for him," Singletary said. "I'm hoping. But, so far, it's inconsistent."
