Vikings Claim Tate (1 Viewer)

Vikings claimed RB Ben Tate off waivers from the Browns.
On the surface, it makes sense. The Vikings were hoping to get Adrian Peterson back in the fold this week, but the NFL instead chose to suspend him for the remainder of the season. Minnesota also doesn't seem ready to hand the reins over to Jerick McKinnon, while Matt Asiata has seen his snaps cut since McKinnon came onto the scene. Asiata is also averaging a pitiful 2.08 YPC over the past five games. Look for Tate to take over as the short-yardage back, in addition to splitting reps between the 20s with McKinnon. It may take some time for Tate to learn OC Norv Turner's offense, so we're not rushing to the waiver wire to add Tate, who looked really bad for the Browns. He's merely an RB3 until proven otherwise.

Makes sense. I guess this may very well spell the end of Adrian Peterson in a Vikings uniform this season.

In claiming Tate, the Vikings owe him $352,941 for 2014 in guaranteed base salary, plus another $46,875 for each game that he is on the 46-man game-day roster. His 2015 salary is not guaranteed.
Speilman sure knows how to waste money on other teams cast-offs. I think the Vikings gave Josh Freeman 3 million for one game last year.

The Colts and Cardinals put in a waiver claim for Ben Tate earlier this week.

The Vikings were awarded Tate because they have the worst record. It's an interesting nugget as it suggests that the Colts are looking for an upgrade on Dan "Boom" Herron as the backup to ineffective Trent Richardson. Meanwhile, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has publicly complained about his team's struggles to run the ball as Andre Ellington is averaging just 3.03 YPC over the last eight games. The good news for Ellington owners is that Arians doesn't have anywhere else to turn right now -- Stepfan Taylor and Marion Grice are not threats.
