Vikings contact Jeff Garcia (1 Viewer)

The Vikings contacted Jeff Garcia to see if he'd be ready to go in case Brett Favre does retire.

Garcia essentially said "thanks, but no thanks" because just like everyone else, he believes Favre is going to play. Garcia decided to accept an offer from the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL instead.

I guess you have to have a plan B when you deal with Favre

The could probably coax Culpepper into leaving the Sacramento Mountain Lions...

Does the Vikings organization and their fans still maintain, with a straight face, that the Favre circus isn't having a tangible negative impact on the team? Imagine being one of the young receivers or assistant coaches prepping for your second preseason game under these conditions.

Yeah, those poor receivers and assistant coaches will be crying all the way back to the playoffs and/or superbowl b/c of Favre. I'm sure they'll find a way to deal with the depression.

I think the bigger picture here is that rather than give them an answer of "if Favre retires, call me" he told them no thanks and would rather play in the UFL.

and an even bigger picture than that is that Tavaris Jackson just plain sux and they have no confidence in him (or Sage it seems)

Maybe this is more about solidifying the rumor that they might trade Sage?
for a carton of eggs and brownie mix?
Not as a starter, rather a back-up. He's better than many back-ups in the league, and it's wasteful to have him as a third-stringer on Vikings. They can probably get Garcia for league minimum and save some dough. Get it? Brownies? Dough? I kill me.

Good point here, it makes you wonder about Jeffrey.
Thing is last steady gig Garcia had was backing up a bad QB who no one believed in. He decided he'd rather play and it wasn't worth the money. Why would he want that gig again? Also, this isn't like Euroleague basketball where now it's going to be prohibitive to sign him if they do indeed need him. It's the UFL. If they decide Garcia is a better option than everyone they have, the deal will still happen.Have been calling Rosenfels to Buffalo. He'd start right away there.

I did not watch the Vikes Friday as I opted to watch the Pack instead but it looked like Sage played a lot. Did anyone catch the reasoning behind it? Possibly auditioning him to other clubs?

I think it was an attempt to exercise leverage and in what has become typical of the Vikings handled it the completely wrong way. They should have gone ahead and offered him a job during minicamps to show Favre that they do in fact have a viable Plan B and that there might not be a spot for him if he keeps them twisting in the wind.

Instead, they keeps their lips firmly planted on Favre's behind and do nothing until camps are almost over and they've been staring at the two mounds of futility they have for QBs. Even then they don't offer Garcia a deal (dumb move IMO) they say if Brett doesn't return (when, 20 minutes before game-time week 1??) would you play, having had zero prep time. Garcia probably realized he might not even start in that scenario. Not surprised he told them to take a hike and that they have receivers AWOL in camp.

And to anyone who doesn't think that this double-standard for Farve isn't detrimental to the team is kidding themselves. Year 1 was the honeymoon. It's now marriage and this crap is really getting on everyone's nerves.

Main thing I got from this actual story is there is no indication when the Vikings contacted Garcia. For all we know it was April and he's been waiting out an NFL offseason before going UFL.

Rumors circulated that Garcia might return to the Eagles to back up first-year starter Kevin Kolb and his father, Bobby, a longtime football coach in Gilroy, confirmed that the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints had expressed interest. But Garcia decided to take the snap in hand, rather than wait for an NFL option."Minnesota had called him and said 'if (Brett) Favre doesn't play are you ready to go?,'" Bobby Garcia said. "But, you know what? Favre is going to play."

One thing I would like to see in the new CBA is a rule where a team can out-and-out say "john Doe with X amount of years experience/age, will make our team, therefore does not need to attend training camp". It would be beneficial to the older players (again make a 10 year in the league miminum or an age minimum (say 33-35 at the least) and just let them skip camp) and would help the teams because they will not be burning these guys out at camp. I am in the group that feels all the Favre shenanigans are because he does not want to attend camp anymore and honestly, I can't blame him. While I realize a vet like this can hurt the team some by not being there, does anyone think Favre would be considering playing today had he not skipped those camps? Most likely he would be burned out; we saw the same games with Walter Jones and other vets, so why not just throw it out in the open and give the long-time vets an exemption. For the most part, if you bring a 35 year-old into camp, you know he is going to make the team, and if not, do not put him on your exemption list. Problem solved....
