Vince Wilfork fined 15 large (1 Viewer)

 NFL needs to get its priorites straight.

An official breaks up a fight in game and drags Nick Barnett to the ground and loses a paycheck.

Wilfork should lose a game check. Considering this is his second fine of the year, it should have been more IMO.

Goodell was never going to step in the way of the Pats. Anyone expecting more than a fine was wishful thinking.

Show me an incident where anybody was suspended for anything close, and then we can talk about the merits. Did he hurt anybody? Was there any intent to try and hurt anyone? It was just what Wilfork said, trask talking with a finger point for empnasis. And, you wasn t a suspension for it? Same to Switz and the other whiners calling for a suspension for hitting a QB in the knee. It's unfortunate, but the Dlinemans job is to make contact with the QB. It's ridiculous to insinuate he intended to tear up the knee. But, let's see some precedent for a suspension in either case.

this is what I thought the discussion would be. The one fine by itself (OP) kinda minimizes it.I remember people complaining about Roy's tackles last year but the sentiment was not enough done. They're all over Roy's horse collars this year. I wonder if Wilfork will get similar high scrutiny in 08, he's brought the attention to himself. I know it's not very pacifying or satisfying (or whatever the word is) to say wait til next year but this is how I'm thinking it might work nowadays.

With the fine comes a letter explaining the fine. Goodell visits teams in the offseason and talks with some in the organization(not everyone but a pretty wide variety of people including field crews). He did chat with Pacman and Chris Henry and I think Roy too but I'm not 100% certain. I'm figuring he's thinking fines and letters, followed by face to face, followed by more severe fines and suspension. I think that order is good but it could be done quicker

Should have been banned for the season for his hit on Losman earlier in the year.
I was coming in here for the sole purpose of saying the same thing.
I remember that after that hit, how he was saying it was unintentional and that he is so upset because he isn't a dirty player and that he would never try to hurt someone, this was a one time freak accident type thing, etc. This is the 3rd time this season he has been fined for dirty hits. It sounds like Rodney Harrison has really rubbed off on him.

Let's not lump in Wilfork with Rodney Harrison just yet. Harrison is the dirtiest player in the history of the NFL. Just watch a Patriots defensive series.Wilfork should not have been suspended, but that fine was weak.

$15,000 isn't enough to make other players stop in the heat of the moment and not do what Wilfork did. And ultimately that's the point of these fines. So it's too small.

Stop what? He could have grabbed the facemask and threw the player down, he didn't. If you poke your finget into somebodys helmet, and 15k fine seems reasonable. It likely would have been $5k, had he not been minorly fined 2x earlier in the season.

Like I said several times in the thread about this last week, it is impossible to prove or disprove intent, but the minute you stick your fingers in another player's facemask, you lose the benefit of the doubt. Wilfork's fine should have been much more than it was.

We could discuss of the modern era sure, but I don't think of all time is realistic. There's books out there with some "oh my" dirty things mentioned that went on years ago. 50s or 60s was a brutal brutal time to play football.

How about some precedent for suspending someone an entire season while the cases have yet to be decided just for a # of run-ins with the law? How about precedent for banning a QB involved in dogfighting? You don't necessarily need precedent with every decision you make. Sometimes you have to SET the precedent and this was an instance where one should have been set given his past history so far this year. It seems it was the history that got those other players in trouble as well, so there's your precedent.

virtually every NFL contract has an image of the league clause in it. Vicks case was exacerbated when he lied to the Commissioner. Pacman clearly violated any image clause. Wilfork did not. You're comparing an apple ot an orange grove. Ghost Rider made a point about proving or disproving intent. I maintain if the desire was to hurt, rather than taunt, he clearly had the opportunity to grab the facemask. He did not.

Apparantly they've never seen the Deacon Jones head slap. The league was brutal. Sticking a finger through a facemask doesn't compare, and to pretend it does is injecting hyperbole. Just as the spygate scandal, the infraction is cited, the fine paid. But, because it's the Pats, they try and make it something that isn't there.

Dude, you're just wasting your time with a bunch of bitter people who are so frustrated that nobody can beat the Pats on the field of play that they'll grasp at anything they can think of to put some kind of loss on the Pats. It's pathetic.Stoogeworld was funny, though.

No, I am very aware of who Jack Tatum is. I would not have made my statement about Harrison if I didn't think he was the dirtiest player in History. Not just with the Pats, with the Chargers as well. A total classless, cheap shot artist, cheater (not spygate, HGH).

Hope you are not referring to my HArrison comments. Pats were ridiculous this season, if they win the Super Bowl, they have my vote as the best team of All Time. That said, that does not mean I cannot comment on some of their players, including the gutless Rodney Harrison.

It was mostly reference to people crying about Wilfork's finger, but it's a pretty general blanket statement.
