"Vince Young will be a 2nd day pick" -Merril Hoge (1 Viewer)

Was Hoge saying that Young will not be taken on the first day or was he voicing his opinion that Young should not be?
This is the question I had as well. It is an extreme, yet defendable position to say he should be a 2nd day pick. To actually think all 32 teams feel that way is absurd and he knows it.

Second round pick or second day pick, Hoge is a drunkard.  Vince Young wont make it out of the top 5, as long as he throws the ball reasonably well at the combine.
He could EASILY fall out of the top 5, but falling out of the 1st round would be tantamount to Eagles making me their surprise 1st round choice.
If no one else picks him, Jacksonville will at least take him in the first round as a WR project. :D
:lmao: True true...

By the way, with Vince Young insisting he'll throw at the Combine, the guy deserves credit for putting himself out there. However, he could be setting himself up to expose his flaws in a big way. My hat's off to the kid for not running from the spotlight, but it's a decision that could easily drop him out of top-5 consideration.
:goodposting: smells like the Aaron Rogers debacle last year..

Vince Young is a great college QB, but it might not translate into NFL success..as with every other QB to come down the pike..

If Vince Young has proven anything, he's proven that he performs his best when the pressure is at its greatest. Which is why that is the perfect time for him to throw, and also why pro teams will regret passing on him if they do. That is an incredibly hard quality to find in athletes, and an incredibly valuable asset for a QB. When you combine that with Vince's freakish physical abilities...well...he shouldn't (and won't) last past the top 3 picks.

I'm pretty sure ESPN has been in the habit for some time of forcing certain personalities to say stupid things in order to create controversy and increase ratings. I know they do it with Woody Paige and it's part of the reason he acts so dopey when arguing a lame position.

This has to be the case with Hoge. "Hey Merrill. We've done a great job hyping Cutler and it would be great if you could slam Vince Young. Thanks bud." ;)
:goodposting: Not just ESPN, but all the networks appear to impose an absurd opinion to spark the impression of an intelligent debate. ESPN does it all the time with Clayton and that other jerk (whose name escapes me right now). Clayton says something dumb, gets berated and then just smiles like a fool. But when he reports independently, he's not too bad.

Same with Hoge. He's pretty good on NFL Matchup but this may have been a case of the producer saying "OK Merrill, it's your turn to say something dumb so the others can look much more intelligent."

What has Hoge said on that show besides "Factorback?"

After 2000 concussions it's the only word he still remembers.

Even if he falls, it won't be farther than where Miami picks.
Even if they pass on him, how does he make it past the Steelers as a replacement for Randel El?
Because the Steelers will fill that void with Robinson, PSU several rounds later than wasting a 1st on Young.

Oh man. I have a feeling you're gonna feel mighty silly in a year or two. I mean, fine, even if you don't like VY as a QB, how could you not want a 6'5" terror out wide? He caught a 48-yarder from Ramonce Taylor, one of UT's RBs, last year, and it looked like he'd been doing it his whole life. I'm pretty sure the Steelers and anyone else would die to have him at the wideout position. Wasting a pick? If VY falls to the 20s, he'll be the best value at those picks in years.Or since Aaron Rodgers. :X Psyche!

I don't think you understand what I was getting at. I do like VY as a QB, I don't like him as a WR. Robinson is a much better fit for the Steelers if that is the role they want to fill and he will come MUCH cheaper. It doesn't really matter anyway. VY is not making it past pick 20.

Ah. My bad! I feel you now. And Robinson does look like a guy who's going to make a big NFL impact somehow, some way, at some position, and any team that gets their hands on him in the middle rounds will be really happy.

Merrill got hit on the head too much when he played the game. Didn't he retire because of concussions? No way does Young fall to even the second round. I doubt he would get by Detroit at 10 if he lasts that long.Vince Young almost single handedly beat a good Michigan defense last year and then did the same to the consensus best team in the country this year. He is a better passer than Vick (in terms of timing and accuracy) and his mobility is just slightly lower. This guy is a legit NFL first rounder and you will see that in April.

I read some scouting buzz that many believe Young drops considerably from where he is tabbed now. Whether they mean he drops past round one, I don't know. A Sporting News article quoted a team official stating about Young's talent and Rose Bowl performance (who someone else described as street ball), "The offense was streamlined and he was told to do whatever it takes to win, and that stuff won't work in this league." Flaws in his mechanics were discussed continuously.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised at him dropping, but never past the first round.

Apparently this unnamed team official has missed the fact that Randall Cunningham & Michael Vick have played QB in the NFL.If "do whatever it takes to win" with a "street ball" offense that is incredibly unsophisticated doesn't describe the Buddy Ryan Eagles offense I don't know what does.

I know I'd like to see him drop, to #9 or 16. I cannot imagine Saban passing on him.

Good thing for VInce he played in more than 1 game then...COlin

Hodge Podge is one of the worst segments on television. He sucks ###. I think he is the worst broadcaster in on ESPN. This guy was a football player so he gets a job. He doesn't know crap. And he did say a day two player, not second round. i saw the same segment. He is a useless dillbag.

I didn't hear Hoge and someone asked this earlier and I don't know if it went answered:Did Hoge say that Young should be drafted on day two or that he will be?

If Matt Jones is a first rounder as a WR, then Vince Young also is on his potential at WR alone. If Vince's throwing shoulder got mangled in some sort accident tomorrow and he said "im switching to WR", I think he's instantly the #1 WR prospect in this draft. Add in his QB potential, and it becomes idiotic if he lasts til the 2nd round.

i <3 Hoge, but damn...what a idiot. Vince Young deserves too me the 2nd or 3rd overall pick. If there was no Reggie bush I would take him #1 over Matt Leinart

He said both. He said if Vince Young were moved to Wide receiver, he would be a first round pick but right now, he is a second day pick AT BEST. He said matteroffactly that Vince Young would not be drafted until the second day. This guy is stealing a paycheck. He sucks. :hot:

The problem is that the NFL draft has become such a hot topic of conversation [thanks in no small part to we fantasy football fanatics] that ESPN's talking heads are all put in the position to sound off, despite it not being their strong suit. It seems to me that C. Mortensen has some secondary agenda, which is gravely concering, whereas Hoge likely just spoke from the cuff when asked the question. Hoge probably couldn't tell you 10 players likely to be first round picks this year, but he's got a mike and a platform and that makes him an "expert."

When Hoge or Michael Irvin speak - I turn the channel. I can't stand to listen to either one...I would rather watch Designing Women.

I almost can't believe I'm typing this, but Irvin at least has a clue.I'd like to see Hoge & Theismann as the new MNF broadcasting combo. We could just turn down the sound, turn up a radio - and never hear them again.

honestly, Houston should pass on Reggie Bush and take Young. They could "at least" do what Atlanta did -- create an exciting capable team. They have Domanick Davis, who, if not a Reggie Bush, is at least proven at the next level. Carr blows.

To be honest he is mesh of Bobby Hebert and Micheal Vick. I just don't think a scrambler/runner type who is an inconsistent passer is a first rounder. He is a late first or early second day type to me......
LOL. If Vick was drafted so high, how can you possibly make your statement about a scrambler/runner type not being a high first rounder? And exactly where do you come up with Young being an inconsistent passer? He was 3rd in the country in Div IA passing efficiency.

:shaking head:

Second round pick or second day pick, Hoge is a drunkard. Vince Young wont make it out of the top 5, as long as he throws the ball reasonably well at the combine.
Vince Young will not be throwing at the Combine. He will have a personal workout. He will throw the ball poorly because he is not a good thrower. However, he will still be a top 10 pick because he:

Is a monster running the ball.

He is a leader.

He is CLUTCH.

This guy oozes confidence.

He has all of the intangibles. I'm just not sure he can throw the ball well enough to succeed in the LEAGUE.

On Mike and Mike this morning, VY said that he WILL participate in the throwing drills at the combine. He also added that since everybody knows he can run, he will skip that part.

This is has been repeated so much that people just spout it like its still true when it's not. Vince WAS not a good thrower his redshirt freshman year and even at the beginning of his sophmore year. However, he grew into quite a good thrower over the second half of his sophmore year and then especially this last season as a Junior. He completed 65% of his passes this year. He had games where he absolutely could not miss (i.e. Colorado 25/29, and even 75% completions in the Championship game). He holds the UT record for most consecutive passes completed in a game. Vince became a good thrower in college, the results speak for themselves. Nobody is going to argue that he has good mechanics, he looks like he's throwing a dart instead of a football. But you also can't argue with his results. He is accurate and effective throwing the ball. Besides, he has an iron will to succeed and be the best. He will do what it takes to become a good thrower in the NFL too. It's only a question of when, not if.

No - Houston should trade down to 4 and take Ferguson. I don't care who the quarterback is - if they don't improve the offensive line it doesn't matter. But I bet they take Bush anyway.
