Vincent Jackson (1 Viewer)

Maurile, if you had to guess right now who starts opposite McCardell for the first game, would it be Jackson or Parker?

Philip Rivers was interviewed on the local sports radio station here today. He mostly just said the same old stuff -- he's excited about his opportunity, yada yada.

But he did single one guy out as being ready to have a breakout year: "Vincent Jackson is working hard to be great, and he is going to be great."
Doesn't surprise me... VJ sounds like the real deal. Any links or was this something you heard on the air and no where else? Rivers + VJ = Manlove = happy VJ owners in 2006 and beyond
own both looking forward to a long happy relationship.

Definitely Parker. His contract was just extended this offseason and he got a $13.5 million deal (five years) with $5 million in bonuses. He works as hard as anyone and he's improved every year.I think Jackson will be groomed to replace Keenan McCardell in another year, with Parker staying put as the solid #2 guy.

(We'll have to wait and see where Rashaun Woods fits into things.)

BTW, here's a nice blurb on Jackson from that link:
“Most receivers become the product of their physical body type,” Schottenheimer said. “Guys that have the quickness are the better route runners because they can come in and out of breaks without slowing down much. Interestingly enough, Vincent Jackson with his size has an ability to drop his weight and change direction. A lot of big guys can’t do that. Vincent may be the best big man that I’ve seen do that. We’ve got some very talented route runners here.”

Man...I am excited about this guy. I just picked him in one league and I'm trying to get him as a throw-in part of a big trade in another.

Early word out of Charger camp:

Vincent Jackson p\/\/ns Antonio Cromartie.
if ya see any video highlight links of VJ over the summer, please keep us in mind

According to the AP, Vincent Jackson

Published Wed Jul 26 9:09:00 p.m. ET 2006

(Rotoworld) According to the AP, Vincent Jackson "schooled" first-round CB Antonio Cromartie at Chargers practice Wednesday.

Impact: Jackson has breakout potential in his second year and is battling Eric Parker to start. It was Cromartie's first practice with the team.

FWIW

(Rotoworld) Chargers WR Eric Parker is expected to face competition for his starting job in training camp.

Impact: Big second-year man Vincent Jackson and former first-round pick Rashaun Woods are mentioned as possible competitors. San Diego would rather use Parker in the slot.

Small blurb from the AP article:

Veterans who had any kind of medical issue at the end of last season are already in camp. One of them, receiver Vincent Jackson, got the best of Cromartie a handful of times in Wednesday's first practice.

well, that's a start, I don't want to be too optimistic, i am that guy that drafted, Brackens, Vincent Jackson, Morant, and am following with brandon marshall as well.. every year there at least three, beating the rookie up on his first day of TC doesn't impress, but i guess it's better than the rook schoolin the second year man..heres to VJ stealing balls frm Gates in the endzone

As a Chargers' fan, I would rather Cromartie was owning Jackson. CB is a bigger area of concern than WR.

With Rivers at QB I wonder if any receiver in S.D has any fantasy life left? Remember Eli's first year as a starter? Shockey was only usefull receiver that year in NY and he had a bad year.

I am downgradeing all S.D offense for this year.

My biggest question is L.T holding a top 5 RB rank and Gates being able to maintain top TE rank. My thoughts are both are in jeapordy.
Did anyone have any value in Cinncinnati last year when Carson Palmer took over?

(I wasn't there this morning. This is from a friend.)

In Saturday morning's training camp session, the Chargers used a lot of three-WR sets, with McCardell, Parker, and Jackson running with the first team.

So it appears that, as expected, Jackson has the early edge over Osgood and Woods to be the slot receiver this year.

Also, there were some interesting comments from Osgood about how Rivers spreads the ball around better than Brees did, so the third and fourth receivers ought to get more looks than they did last year.

:goodposting: While I hope Vincent works out, I wouldn't get too excited about him beating a guy who wasn't a full time starter CB at the college level. For more info on Cromartie clicky here.

I can't believe I have to watch Quentin Jammer out there again this season. Couldn't we have gotten some mid level free agent CB!?!? It's not like the Charger CBs being below average (to put it nicely) is a new development. Meanwhile KC is signing Ty Law DAGNABBIT!

Anyway, to get back on topic - try and temper your enthusiasm for any of the Charger receivers when reading about how they "pVVnd" the Charger DBs in practice - I don't think it's that big a deal, which bodes ill for the upcomming season.

Cromartie was essentially a full-time starter his sophomore year (and he got playing time as a freshman as well). He didn't technically start because the coaches let the seniors play on the first snap. But Cromartie got more snaps than the "starters" and was first-team All-ACC.

Jammer is fine. I don't think there's a corner in the AFC who gave up fewer receptions last year. It'd be nice if he got an interception once in a while, but he's certainly not the guy other teams pick on. The Chargers just need solid play from the other starting corner and from the safeties, something they didn't get last year.

Well the blurb from FSU about him is mosty positive, however from that and his nfl.com draft analysis (linked above), I get the impression he wasn't an every down player. Maybe some Seminole fan can enlighten us?

Hmmm...The only stats I can dig up are the following:

With his 1 interception, Jammer tied for 103rd among NFL defensive backs.

He was tied for 7th in passes defended with 19.

He was tied for 36th in total tackles with 61.

Of course other teams didn't pick on him extensively - why do that when you're running Sammy friggin Davis out there on the other side? It seemed to me people DID look Jammer's way more often when Florence was out there. Now, if some one could point us to where they keep track of the number of times he got thrown at, the number of completions he allowed, and the number of penalties called against him, we'd have something other than anecdotal evidence to go on. But I'm still in disagreement that he's fine. It seems to me that he has a knack for giving up big plays/crucial receptions and comitting stupid penalties at the worst possible time, and I'm frankly tired of his act. I think Florence is already a better corner than he is, and it saddens me that Jammer will be out there yet again this year.

Off Topic here, but check out the 1337-speaking Maurile! Nice reference.I'm just a happy Bolts fan and Rivers owner. Great discussion here on VJ and Rivers!

VJ is one of those WR projects. most WR's are. The SD O will run exclusivly thru LT this year and aas long as he is there. Rivers and VJ will look better in 2007-8 than today. C'mon now how many time does a "green" QB and a "green" WR take any NFL defense by storm?

P.Rivers and V.Johnson 2006 = A.Smith and A.Battle 2005

I guess Gates is just a blocking TE now, oh well it was fun while it lasted.... ;) I think Rivers is going to put up some nice numbers, I think he's going to make more use of the full field than Brees could, will make good reads and hit the most open guy most of the time, and I think that could mean nice things for a guy like Jackson, who will probably be on the good side of a mismatch every time he lines up. However I don't think Jackson is going to crazy go nuts this season - I think Parker will remain the starter (when he's healthy), and Woods will probably see some time as well, all of which will limit Jackson's opportunities.

I don't think anyone is really pimping Jackson in redraft leagues this year. He is trying to be an NFL WR3. That is not stud material.Rivers, on the other hand, people ought to be excited about.

agreed.. however, i would think Rivers may have thrown the ball to VJ more then any SD reciever... them both being second team last year.. no??

Well, im a big time FSU fan. I just watched some video footage of him at the FSU camp training with the younger recievers and he looked really good. They were doing 1 on 1 drills and he stayed with most of the recievers step for step. This was without a pass rush too.I cant think of any Noles in the secondary that are "every down players." Mickey Andrews, FSU defensive coordinator, rotates players ALOT, especially in the secondary. He likes to keep them fresh. This year, there is expected to be atleast 6 DBs playing in the Miami game. Alot of times Bobby would give the seniors the luxury of starting, even though they may have not been the BEST player at that position.

When AC came in though, he would stay in majority of the time.

I remember 2 years ago, he almost single handidly beat Miami himself.

Other than that, Jammer is fine. :P

 2006 Chargers >>>>>> 2005 Niners

I'd say the quality of the surrounding cast helps the Rivers/Jackson combo (I assume you mean Jackson and not Johnson), rather than hurts it.

There is no LT in SF that is for sure. Rivers will have to take his licks before he's up to NFL speed IMO. Only 30 pass att in 2 years. As a team to team comparsion goes.... there is none. Rivers has way more tools around him but as far as PR and VJ go... I just don't see it comming this season.and yes i did mean Jackson earlier. Thanks for pointing out my guppy mistake.

(Rotoworld) The release of Rashaun Woods should guarantee Vincent Jackson at least the No. 3 receiver role.

Impact: The way the Chargers talk about the immensly gifted Jackson, he could pass Eric Parker on the depth chart as a starter. Philip Rivers says Jackson can be the "best receiver in the league." We wouldn't draft him in fantasy leagues yet, but he's someone to watch closely.

Get em while his value is still low

Chargers :: WR

WR V, Jackson Could Be #3 Receiver

Kevin Acee, San Diego Union-Tribune - [Full Article]

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson has a vision. It is of the near future, where he leaps from his spot on the platform of potential. “That's a good word and a bad word,” Jackson said, “That's an in-between word. I'm looking forward to showing it. You want to get over that 'Could-be.' “I see limitless possibilities. I know I'm going to make plays this year. I'm a mismatch (for defensive backs). There are a lot of things I can do.” With the release of WR Rashaun Woods, Jackson's chance may be arriving as he now has one less obstacle to achieve his vision.

We wouldn't draft him in fantasy leagues yet, but he's someone to watch closely.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 - I'm drafting him in fantasy leagues.

I've been on that band wagon since I saw him at the combine...

He reminded me a lot of Gonzo, but with a bit more speed/agility.

I think he has a better chance of replacing McCardell by seasons end if Keenan loses a step and time finally catches up with him.

Parker gets open and catches better than Jackson at this point.

Slightly different: Rivers says Jackson can be "a top wide receiver in this league." (Link)

Is Vincent Jackson starting tonight now that Eric Parker is out? Could be very interesting to watch him and Rivers, since they both should play quite a bit.

Yes, Jackson should start. I don't think he played in a single preseason game last year, so I'm looking forward to watching him tonight. (Tape-delayed. )

Tape delayed? Man up and buy a ticket MT! Stubhub selling them for like $20. Parking lot opens in 30 mins :DAnd yes VJax should be starting and playing I'd guess nearly the entire first half.

Wow, I am impressed with Jackson. He got a TD called back because he was slightly out of bounds, rookie mistake. A play or two later he makes up for it with another TD catch. Philip Rivers trusts this kid.
