Vinyl Records Guys (1 Viewer)

Northern Voice said:
I thought @rockaction had a vinyl thread but I can't find it..

As a guy who primarily listens to post-97 or so rock, I don't usually have a ton of luck with great used finds, which is fine, a lot of my collection is either more recent stuff I've bought directly from bands or older stuff I've found at the local used record store/flea markets.

Today started that way as well. I was pretty happy to find Talking Heads' More Songs About Buildings and Food at the flea market, then I went to the record store and they had the exact album I wanted - INXS - Shabooh Shoobah.

I browsed around a bit and nothing else caught my eye until I got to the cash register and took a quick look through the "New used records" bin and found Franz Ferdinand (self titled) and The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema.

So now I'm wondering if people my age are getting out of the vinyl business/that music isn't cool anymore and if I'll start finding more from that era in future visits. Or maybe I just got lucky and someone with my tastes very recently sold some.
Hipsters have revitalized the vinyl market. It’s almost as easy to find something new on vinyl as it is on CD these days.

If you know what you are doing you can buy cheap and sell high for 80s records. Some 70s. 90s and 00s vinyl is also a big market. It’s a niche market, but with some risks and patience it can be very profitable. Eg a friend of mine found a near mint copy of Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode at an incredibly low price and sold it for a 40 times profit. It’s getting harder and harder to find cheap vinyl though. I wish i could go back to the early 00s where it was considered borderline landfill. Vinyl is the only way i listen to real music. CD or digital only if necessary.

I rarely had luck finding any deals in NYC.  Discogs is also worth checking find time to time - felt like I was stealing some classic hip hop from a few sellers on there.
I just can't get myself to buy/sell on Discogs.  There's just something about walking into a store and finding something you've been trying to hunt down for years.  I told the story here in some thread about finding Jane's Addiction's first album (we always called it XXX) one Saturday morning in my local shop after searching for eons in record stores around the world.  It's the type of joy I don't get very often.

I never did get the appeal of vinyl.  Having to spend more money that took up more pace and you had to flip every 30 minutes, but my wife broke me and we got one that integrated with the Sonos for Christmas.

I'm happy to admit I was wrong.  Even hit up my first record store I didn't know existed.  The place sells "browsing beers" too.  I can totally see spending hours in that store.

It does make you appreciate what you're listening too a lot more, at least it does for me.

Have some somewhere. Probably nothing in good enough shape to have much value though a couple of the double albums were used as a platform to separate out seeds and stems. Does decades old residue have value?

Funny to see them being sold at big stores like Target after being abandoned for decades. Saw a new pressing of Bob Marley's Exodus that comes with a free t-shirt.

I've bought from them a few times when things have sold out locally.  Good retailer.

I also buy from this guy in Phoenix.  Every Thursday he does a breakdown on anything that he just got in for release.  Its a pretty good resource and he's very knowlegeable.

Also bought from them online. Haven't been to their shop in person yet. They also just moved to a larger space this past weekend I believe. Mike seems like a great guy. Watch his videos also from time to time.

So when one of my two vintage Denon tables started acting up, I decided to buy a new one. Budget was anywhere between $500 and $1,200, and I had a few boxes I wanted checked. First was an acrylic platter, as I like the way they look and they are supposed to help with static. Second is auto stop at the end of the record, as I can easily fall asleep when listening (seriously, I can fall asleep to Metallica). Nice cartridge included would be a plus, as would belt drive.

Say hello to the Fluance RT85. For $500, this is a heck of a turntable.

- Acrylic platter
- Belt drive
- Auto stop (not full auto - doesn't return, but it stops the record so it doesn't wear down as I snooze)
- Ortofon Blue cartridge. Highly regarded, and alone would cost you $239.

I got it Friday, and have been listening all weekend. I'm blown away at A) How good this table really is, and B) the price. $500 was my low end, but I have to say, this is a great buy at that price point. I'm confident I couldn't buy a better turntable if I doubled the price. This is one I'd recommend to anyone looking for a sub-$1,000 turntable.

With zero help from you nerds I got my daughter a turntable for Christmas. I think she likes the idea of it more than using it. She put a bunch of the records I got her on her walls but I’m. It sure she’s used in awhile.

I keep buying records and one day I’ll probably get my own turntable.

Just got an RT82 myself. It’s the same TT just with an aluminum platter instead of acrylic and an Ortofon OM10 cartridge instead of the Blue.

My wife inherited a bunch of vinyl, most from the late 60s and 70s, from her mom and they’ve just been sitting here. So I made the foray into vinyl with the RT82 figuring I can upgrade the platter and cartridge later if I choose.

The sound seems great but I haven’t been able to really crank it up yet which I’m looking forward to.

The funniest part may have been my wife trying to get my 14 year old to understand what a record is by comparing it to a CD only for my daughter to respond “what’s a CD?” :kicksrock:

Finally took the plunge. Local HiFi shop had a consignment Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with an acrylic platter and a red stylus (apparently that's pretty good?). Price was $250 so I think I got a great deal.

Generally, I like it. I should have maybe been prepared for, instead of a massive improvement, just a different sound. I think I need better RCA cables for starters. And I'd guess my Denon amp isn't going to win any awards.

Won't Get Fooled Again and Princess Leia's theme from A New Hope sounded really good though.

You sure did get a good deal for $250. I don't know what model so I can't price it, but it's at least $299 new, and likely around $399. Red stylus? Fancy. It's probably an Ortofon. About a hundred bucks for the stylus alone, never mind the acrylic platter, which is also probably a hundred bucks when ordered from Pro-Ject. Nice work.

I'm still buying cd's. 😀 I have giant holes where I had cassettes. Hip Hop and New Wave mostly. Hit me up if you have any.

I buy CDs too, it all drives my wife crazy. She doesn't understand why I cant just stream everything I want to listen to
Sell me some! I actually just gave my brother about 500 to sell for a buck each at his Sunday booth. Mostly commons. I am sitting on like 2k classical ones from an estate sale I need to get rid of. I need to pull the hdcd ones if I can figure out what's what. Fun hobby if you act play them. 😀

Over 500 items in my Discogs collection now. 🤑

Since we're waiving d*%ks....me too.

Ugh. I really need to get my stuff (well over 800) into discogs. Maybe this will be good winter time task.

Nice collections posted.
It's a fun task, albeit long.
Oh I'm sure.

I really need to put this on my to-do list, if for nothing else, insurance purposes. In browsing discogs there are a few pricey LPs in my collection.... stuff like early Mountain Goats releases and Modest Mouse 7"s for example.

Anyone have good advice for cleaning vinyl?

I tried Spin Clean and Humminguru both with zero results...

TIA
I use Spin Clean and think it works quite well, what do you mean by zero results?
The static and blips are exactly the same after using the Spin Clean.

Frustrating.

Generally, cleaning will not fix static (try some different mats = cork, rubber, etc). Humidifier in the room can help too, as can a zerostat gun. Also, make sure the turntable is grounded properly.

I love records, but I've come to accept that the cleanest, most pristine vinyl will have an occasional click or pop.

I don't even have a record player but I was getting the itch to waste dumb amounts on some of the jazz albums at my local vintage shop the other day. I must never ever buy a record player.

Don't. They're cumbersome and unless you have a dedicated listening room, they're really a pain in the butt. Wait for this bubble to collapse and then get yourself a nice turntable with some hep jazz recordings.
Yeah, that is smart. No way I can afford to be spending a few hundred on a single jazz album. I walk out with an Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, a Dave Brubeck and a Herbie Hancock or I pay my mortgage lol.

Looking for a beginner turntable.

It's down to 3

Pro-ject CD
Rega P1
Fluance RT2

All can be had for about $300

Wife thinks I'll go in hard, and give up after awhile(if you know what I mean)

I'm going to be dumping my childhood/teen decent turntable in two weeks. Too bad you're not in NCal- id give it to you along with everything else.

Sharing some advice on static that may be upthread but may help the static. And I feel like a dope for forgetting this from the late 70s and early 80s. I had a bad hum and some static I couldn’t cure no matter what grounding technique I tried. Like a dope I had the receiver and the turntable plugged into different outlets. Literally you could hear every foot hit the floor in the room. Plug both into a dedicated outlet and crystal clear audio.

I finally got my audio setup working on 220VAC here in Switzerland. Bought an amplifier locally (well, got it for Xmas), and connected the 110VAC turntable to a toroidal step down transformer. It sounds pretty dang good. Even the Taylor Swift albums my daughter puts on sound nice.

Who's ready for record store day? The goodies seem to be more stacked this year with items im interested.

Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music is getting a 50th anniversary re-press on RCA Legacy and I'm all over it at the price they're listing it at. Unfortunately, I live in sort of the real and cultural desert and I'm not sure any of the local record stores will stock it. I'm probably going to have to wait until somebody lists it and tries to flip it.

You could always drive over to the west side and find a store that will carry it.

West side as in LA? That’s about where I’d hit if I drove west.

Yes. Like in Santa Monica or Venice or Hollywood. Likely some store out there that are within driving distance from the IE.
