Volek is still with the Titans, right? (1 Viewer)

Billy Volek looked great in his starts for the Titans and seemed to be the chosen one behind McNair.

Why would the Titans take a QB at 3 when they

a) have Volek

b) would face tremendous pressure to start the rook

c) have many needs (not QB)

d) could get a very good QB to groom in the 2nd round or later

What am I missing?

He's 30 and not the future QB of the team. They can draft a QB who fits what Chow wants to do and let him sit the bench for a year and adjust to the NFL.

Steve McNair could be elsewhere soon.

LOL Dude!I know this. The post is about Volek starting at QB.

30 is not old for a QB. Again, why not start Volek for a few more years grab a Croyle or Clemmens to groom for later?

Signs are pointing to Volek as the starter for 2006 and then a rookie taking over. McNair will look good in purple and black.

30 isn't particularly old for a QB but sure aint young either. And it is debatable if he is good enough to carry the load game in/game out.

McNair is a non-factor as he's about this close to retiring (or should) and the "warrior" gets hurt all the time anyway.

They could probably get by w/Volek for awhile, but there's a good chance they won't have a shot at a QB of this caliber a few years down the road, at least not for the price (ie a stud FA QB will cost more than a stud rook).

Because the Titans are sitting with the 3rd pick in the draft. Any team isnt going to expect to draft that high again in the near future. There is an opportunity now to get a premier rookie who would be regarded higher than Volek and a lot of other QBs. They might not have this same opportunity again for years. The timeing says now or never.

Also, a rookie isnt necessarily going to be ready to play right away no matter how highly regarded he is. Warner started over Eli who the Giants went all out to get. Palmer didnt start his first year at all. Smith didnt start until the 49ers had lost a number of games. Cutting McNair now is a serious consideration as he'll be an UFA who wont likely return next year if they draft a rookie at pick 3. That makes Volek an important part of the team as the remaining veteran QB.

I think that the Titans will be looking to trade Volek assuming McNair and the Titans kiss and make up (which I don't see happening). So I expect the Ravens to target either in a deal, unless McNair gets outright released.

Leinart and Young are two too-good-to-pass-up talents IMO, and I don't think the Titans can afford to pass if Matt Mauck or whoever is their backup.

I agree with this. If McNair leaves, the team can have Volek take on the starting job and let a rookie sit and hold the clipboard. If Volek then doesn't turn out to be as good as he showed in glimpses, then they go with the rook and wish Volek farewell. If Volek does impress, then there's the possibility of a Brees/Rivers situation.

Either way, it could be a win/win situation.

Uh no...signs point to Volek competing with another veteran QB for the right to take a seat on the bench halfway through the season when the rook is ready to start.

I understand your point and agree, but let's look at something.Rich Gannon did not have his best seasons until after reaching 30. He showed promise in 98 with KC, and Oakland signed him in 99.

His career took off from there and his next 4 years were very good.

I would draft a QB as well, but let him sit and learn behind Volek. The Titans are in transition anyway, and he would give them time to rebuild their line and acclimate their draftee qb.

I still think that Volek has upside. As was the case with gannon, Volek does not have a lot of wear and tear. He could have many years left.

Volek will be fine, with or without the Titans. He's a young 30 year old with proven on-field results. He'll get a shot somewhere.
