James Laurinaitis was limited in practice all week, but is probable. James Butler’s recovery has gone quicker than expected. He fully practiced Friday and is also probable. That makes Michael Lewis’ role still more unclear. It’s possible that he’s been signed to take over Craig Dahl’s hybrid linebacker role in the dime defense. Ron Bartell is questionable with a neck injury.

Patrick Chung looked better than expected by the end of the week and is listed questionable after limited practices Thursday and Friday. There’s been no official indication on how much (or if) he’ll play. I’d expect him to be active, but limited and likely rotate today.

Brian Dawkins is likely to return from his knee sprain this week. If he holds up, he may get a full time load right away.

LaMarr Woodley will play today, making Timmons a relatively safe start in all leagues. Hamstrings are fickle, especially the first week back, but I think you start Timmons unless you have another strong LB1 option to use in his place. The Steelers’ run defense is going to struggle up front without Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel. Today might be the beginning of a nice run of games for Troy Polamalu.

DeAndre Levy is questionable, but expected to return to his starting role today. He’s still suggesting he’s not 100%, however, so be wary of using him until he proves he can perform. Ashlee Palmer moves over to WLB, but it may be Bobby Carpenter that takes nickel snaps.

Gerald Hayes is off the PUP list today and should see a handful of snaps in the base defense. It’s likely that he’ll replace Daryl Washington, with Paris Lenon moving to WILB, but it’ll be interesting to see how this progresses in coming weeks. Clark Haggans is doubtful with a groin injury and very unlikely to play.

Brandon Chillar is off the injury report, as is AJ Hawk, so we should get some clarity on the nickel packages in Green Bay today. We may also see Chillar take some OLB snaps with all the injuries GB has had at that spot, though they aren’t much deeper inside. Last week, Chillar replaced Bishop for just a handful of snaps, but they were the most likely passing snaps. Atari Bigby wasn’t activated off the PUP this week, but likely will next week. Anthony Smith did not play a defensive down, so expect Charlie Peprah to be a decent start again this week.

Kirk Morrison was again removed from the nickel package in favor of Justin Durant last week. Don Carey and Courtney Greene started and both played every down last week. Greene is the much better play. Jeremy Mincey was tabbed to start over Derrick Harvey this week, but broke his hand in practice. He practiced fully on Thursday, but limited on Friday. Neither player is a good start today, but Mincey is worth watching if he plays.

The Saints got both Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter back to limited practices this week and Scott Shanle was limited all week without setbacks. Greer is doubtful and is unlikely to play. Porter is a GTD. Expect to see a lot of Malcolm Jenkins at Patrick Robinson at corner regardless of whether Porter goes or not. Darren Sharper should also move toward a full time role after coming out of last week’s game well.

Matt Shaughnessy is off the injury report and ready to play. Kamerion Wimbley has been limited with a groin injury all week. There’s little talk about Wimbley’s injury, but it’s likely that Shaughnessy and Scott would both see more opportunity if he’s unable to go.

Chinedum Ndukwe and Johnathan Joseph are questionable. Both could do no better than a limited Friday practice. Joseph seems more likely to play than Ndukwe, as the Bengals promoted a safety off the practice squad late week. Reggie Nelson would get the start if Ndukwe can’t go. Chris Crocker would assume most of the safety value, however.

Geno Hayes is questionable with a knee injury, but practiced fully Friday. Sean Jones and Sabby Piscitelli are rotating at SS.

Jairus Byrd is questionable but practiced fully on Friday. The Bills stuck with the 4-3 coming out of the bye and Chan Gailey’s comments suggest that the switch is permanent (for 2010, anyway). The 4-3 is likely to continue this week against another run heavy team in KC, but it hasn’t been any more successful than the 3-4 was. It’s possible we may yet see Posluszny back in a more consistent ILB role soon.

Terrence Newman didn’t practice all week and is questionable with a rib injury. He’s a game time decision, with team sources suggesting he’ll try to play. Bradie James and Keith Brooking took nearly every snap last week.

i think the bigger question for chung aside if he rotates, will he play more in the box to stop AP? i would think merriwether would stay in centerfield or bracket moss but i'm guessing. With the vikings Qb's issues i would think the Patriots pony up to stop AP and make whichever vikings QB beat them.

I agree. If it's rotational, I think the straight line movement of playing downhill fits the injury situation (as does Chung's own talents) better than using him in coverage. Still possible that James Sanders steals in the box snaps or that Chung re-aggravates the injury early in the game.I think I'd consider him a risky DB3 (with plenty of upside).

If anybody hears an update on Alan Branch I'd appreciate it........seems to be questionable with back issues..
Only able to find one passing speculative comment from Thursday that suggests he'll be available. It's a reasonable assumption since he was able to do a limited practice on Friday after being added to the injury report on Thursday. Hard to know for certain unless we get a AZ homer who's heard something from yesterday that's not been printed.

Johnathan Joseph and Chinedum Ndukwe inactive. Reggie Nelson officially announced as Ndukwe's replacement.

DeAndre Levy active and starting at MLB. Consider using him only as LB3 with caution.

Jene, the part on Darren Sharper moving moreso towards a fulltime role...........is that something you've seen or confirmed or just your opinion(mine as well)? i didn't get to see any of the saints game last week so i have no idea how he looked. i know for Darren if he can remotely run he's a impact player as his instincts/gambling are almost 2nd to none. if he were to play starter or near starter snaps this almost seems like a dream matchup for Darren. Ben is a great QB but he is the type of QB that Darren can dupe into mistakes

Still sounds unlikely to play every down, but very likely to see his snap count increased. If Tracy Porter can't play, I think there's a chance Sharper could play nearly every down.Link

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams acknowledged Saturday the Saints were bringing safety Darren Sharper along slowly after his knee surgery, but predicted the All-Pro would see the field more often Sunday night against Pittsburgh.

Under normal circumstances, Williams said, the Saints probably wouldn't have even activated Sharper last week before the Cleveland game. Sharper, put on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing offseason knee surgery, could have spent up to three more weeks practicing and getting up to speed, but with the Saints secondary reeling from injuries the team had no choice.

"He played well," Williams said of Sharper's return to action. "I tried to purposefully, wanted to work him in slowly, meaning that don't want to have a setback early. Because usually when you have a guy coming of the PUP you use the whole three weeks before you put him back on the field but we had a need to put him back out there.

"So we felt he could do that. We played him 13 plays on defense, four plays on special teams, put him in the set in the red zone, two minute drill, those type of things and I felt he did very well," Williams concluded.

"We're going to try to increase those numbers this week," he added. "Try to pick the right plays and also try to get him around the ball. There's a couple of things, 'can I guess right?' and, 'Can I dial it up in the correct timeframe to put him around where I think or we think the ball is going to go.'"

Jeremy Mincey inactive, giving Derrick Harvey one more chance to prove himself.

Ron Bartell active, but not starting for St. Louis. Laurinaitis starting as expected.

No major surprises with the early inactives. I'll have an eye out for any late breaking news and should have the afternoon inactives up by 3ET.

My apologies for the deleted WSIS posts, but we'd strongly prefer to keep this thread streamlined for news and discussion of the updates. I'm available by PM and email, but please understand that Sunday morning is a high volume time and we're trying to provide the most information to the most people we can. Appreciate everyone's understanding and contributions as always.

Jene is Levy going to play all snaps or is it more likely he will be eased back in? I am gun shy on plugging him in this week because on his last return he burned me!!!

I guess we're not treating LaRon Landry's "Questionable" injury designations seriously anymore.

He played every down in his last attempt at returning and an 85% Levy is arguably better than a 100% Landon Johnson. I wouldn't be starting Levy if I had any other LB3 capable talent. Levy will have to show that he can move laterally and shed blocks, two things he didn't do at all in the earlier game this season, before I'd start him over any other top 35-40 option with a decent matchup.

I haven't been, sorry. Redskins never list anyone probable and Landry has been limited in practice with one nagging issue or another for the past month. Until I see a decline in his play or change in his practice status or post-practice comments, I'm considering him a definite start.

Jene,Do you really think Washington loses snaps this week? I haven't heard this but then again the roles have yet to be determined. I don't want this to be a WDIS so I will refrain. If you had a snap count projection how would you project Hayes, Lenon and Washington?Tom

should I pick up Reggie Nelson (dropping William Moore) rather than waiting and hoping on Pat Chung or Tracy Porter?

Kurt Somers has been consistently reporting that Lenon moves to WILB when Hayes returns. This week's note was authoritative enough that I'm guessing he's seen the practice reps to confirm that. He's also reporting 15-20 snaps for Hayes in run situations. I think that's likely the way it goes. Hayes on every other series in the base defense in the first half at least and they'll go from there. I think Lenon plays every down, with Washington and Hayes getting 15-20 apiece.

Whoops, sorry.

Thanks. It seems like everyone on this forum is a Chung owner, so I'm sure there will be a lot of us anxiously awaiting the official announcement.

Nah, we're all in this one together. This forum wouldn't be here if it weren't for the contributions of everyone.I'm hopeful that it's a sign that defensive players are gaining more traction in the fantasy landscape. It's about time we broke out a bit.

Thanks for the news on Chung. Bummed I had to drop Gerhart to pick up a replacement. Hope AP stays healthy!

Was Levy able to make it through the game without getting hurt again, and was he in on nickel packages?

Was Greg Toler active? He put up 0 points and normally he'sGood for 15+???
Only saw short bursts of both games thus far.I'm pretty certain that Levy didn't play every down. Looked like some dime (with Peterson playing inside and struggling) in a few spots. Didn't get a great look yet, though.I saw Toler on the field a number of times. Don't know if he was in and out or it was a byproduct of the Buccaneers not throwing many passes to the WR to his side.
