Waiver Wire Gem 2016 (1 Viewer)

So who was that waiver wire acquisition that made a big difference this year?  Perhaps Jordan Howard?  He was drafted in my leagues but imagine he was an early season acquisition for many.  Cameron Meredith was big for me but that is just based on his play-off run.  He certainly wasn't a guy you could count on week in and out.  In fact, this year's waiver darling might be a long list of guys that were useful for a brief window - like Bilal Powell.

I would call myself a "buy & hold" owner but this year seems much closer to day trader mentality.

Tyrell WIlliams, Rishard Matthews, Kenny Britt, Tyreek Hill, and sometimes Terrelle Pryor all delivered against expectations and rescued managers from injuries.

In shallower leagues you could have probably scooped up Jay Ajayi and Jordan Howard off waivers when they looked to be irrelevant.

I grabbed Howard (luckily before he was on anyone's radar, after he was dropped early but before it was clear he was the back to own on the Bears, paid zero FAAB for him IIRC), Adams, and Matt Ryan off waivers in one of my leagues. I won the championship.

I picked up Russell Wilson off waivers midseason from an impatient owner and he came up big the last 2 weeks.

Rishard Matthews, Kenny Britt, Ty Montgomery, Robby Anderson, Cameron Brate, Taylor Gabriel gave me some nice weeks.

Taylor Gabriel deserves a mention.....no?

Oops, reading quick and missed this above

One of the crappiest wire gems list  in a while..I guess Hill prob the best..But no real stud came from the wire this year like most that you could ride to a Championship..There were a lot of helpful players along the way..I would of like to have seen what Meredith would have done for the year if Hoyer did not get hurt and Cutler coming back for a few games, ruining him for a few weeks, then Barkley turning him back into a nice WR1/2 most weeks.. No surprise break out RB off the waivers this year either(Montgomery was almost one)..I wouldn't count Howard or JA as waiver gems,as they were drafted in all 14 of the leagues I was in and most leagues. I'm just glad I grabbed Clay and started him this week after Green went down..So Clay is my Waiver gem of the year for my team..I might draft him in later rounds next year if Taylor is still the Bills QB(which he will be)I think they finally got on the same page over the last 3 games. I'm curious to see if it continues next week as well...

There really weren't many reliable players week to week in general.

Tyreek Hill in a landslide
Hill is the first guy I thought of but ty Montgomery was huge last week, the main reason I lost.

My best waiver in redraft was either Malcolm Mitchell or Tyler Eifert.

In dynasty?  Dion sims helped last week and heading into 2017 he, along with AJ Derby should provide te2 type depth. Granted, that's more speculation.

Petty well covered here, maybe also Cameron Brate.
My one title success this year is a dynasty team where I came in pretty stacked.  Brate was the one FA pickup that really contributed, bailing me out the past couple weeks with Reed being unstartable.

Wondering if he's a one-shot wonder like Barnidge, or if he'll settle in to a stable fantasy role even when TB gets a 2nd WR.

for me, Ajayi (was cut) and Gabriel.

for some hurting at rb, Ty Montgomery (you can thank this guy if you got him before his break out game)

adams should have been drafted... shame if he wasnt. but he's an excellent pickup.

For total return on value it's hard to top Howard and Tyrell Williams, with both ending the season ~ top 10 numbers at their position.

I'd go with Cameron Meredith and Tyreek Hill. Not just because they emerged from practically nowhere (I had heard a bit of HIll pre-season but not Meredith, myself) and they both end the year as solid keeper material. Neither strikes me as a flash in the pan; they both look legit. I'd give the nod to Hill because of how explosive he has been but long term, I could see Meredith develop into a stud WR.

Howard's legit. Not the best athlete but some of the best instincts in the league. Just knows how to play the position. He should be drafted high next year.

This is my feeling as well and wonder if it calls for a change in philosophy - to more of a day trader mentality.
I like that phrase and feel it perfectly described my approach in fantasy this year. Right from the jump, I disliked my early draft picks (Gronk injury more serious than let on, Sammy's foot all of a sudden wasn't ok, Miller looked pedestrian, Moncrief hurt) but luckily I drafted some guys who had hot starts (Crowell, Marvin Jones, Tevin Coleman, Diggs and Stafford). I just started trading everyone and everything. Moved Gronk, Miller and Sammy before their value crashed. Then traded all my players that started hot. Just never really stopped churning my roster.

There ended up only being 2 teams I didn't trade with. I made at least 1 trade between each week of the season. Even come the championship game, I started 2 players I picked up Saturday AM. My winning team had 0 players I drafted. My whole mentality was there were only a small handful of players that were week to week difference makers and I would trade anything to get one. Other than that, I assumed every player would be volatile and never got too attached.

This could probably be its own thread, but what are the implications for leagues with free agent auction bids?  One thing I'm always surprised by is people willing to overbid on that "one guy" early in the season.  The chance of him being the difference maker is low and the downside is you're now handicapped financially.  This year, I can recall Dwayne Washington, Jalen Richard and a bunch of other guys who slip my mind (doesn't say much about their performance) who people "had to have".

ETA:  I started three guys in my Championship Game line-up that came from the waiver last weekend.  And I was the favorite; which made it a tougher decision.  All three outproduced their successor.  I won handily and any single move would have made the difference.  I lose if I stand pat.

Part of my trading strategy was to always try and get a few $ of FAB from the other owners in trades. Over the course of the year, I had $150 to spend (100 budget). I found people didn't value it as much as they did players and didn't mind throwing in $5-10 to seal a trade.

Ty Montgomery

Charles Clay
I picked up Montgomery and thought the dual position eligibility was a huge edge for me (shallower rosters).  The sickle cell hurt his value although he did come up one week.

Clay is another guy with a great play-off run but wasn't there all season.

Nice strategy.

Nice strategy.
It worked, but not how I hoped. It allowed me to keep a steady flow of guys on my team that were playable for short periods but often ended up back on waivers (Beasley, Meredith, T West, Gillislee, etc.) It was nice to have access to a larger "bench" to play match-ups. My plan was to have the cash to get all-in player (thinking there is usually a Deangelo, Forsett, CJ Anderson league winner in WW) and still have money to play with for the week to week streaming and mid level guys. There just never really that all-in guy to buy this year.

Jay Ajayi. I know he was drafted, but in some leagues he was likely cut after 4 rough weeks and the news Foster was returning.

I do similar.  After byes I sell of JAG depth for cash - Brian Quick for $3, Everson Griffin for $6, DQwell Jackson for $5, Craig Robertson for $6.  Guys I got early for $1 but now there's nothing on the wire even close to that caliber player available.  I tend to spend hard on $1 fliers so that's how I fund that activity.
