Waiver Wire Gems - PreSeason Week 1 edition (1 Viewer)

Guys like Justin Harper, Chaz Schillens, Leonard Weaver & Sam Hurd confirmed for me why they were already on my radar.

Julian Edelman was someone Sig and Cecil mentioned in the Patriots preseason watch list as a Wes Welker like player who could step in if Welker was injured. It attracted my curiosity and with his listing at MFL still as a QB, he might have been missed by many. He impressed me today against the Eagles playing in a similar role to Welker, what was more impressive was that he did it against the Eagles starters. With the Pats offense being so potent, a guy like Edelman could possibly plug straight in if Welker went down.

If he's not drafted, Tim hightower seems like the most likely candidate to start in Az, if Beanie can't answer the bell and get over his injuries..doubtful that Hightower is available off of the waiver wire, though..

if undrafted, here are some others who could become nice waiver wire gems:

Josh Morgan might have a nice season with the continued hold-out of Crabtree..

Travis Beckum

Cardinals' Defense

Matt Leinart

R. Jennings ( backup to MJD)

Ahmad Bradshaw

Chris Baker. He was already on my radar a little
Don't get too excited over Baker. He's had a few good games in the past with the Jets, but with Moss, Welker, Galloway and even Ben Watson among others, I don't see him getting a lot of targets when the games matter. Could score a few, but that's about it.

I think Ben Watsons's time has come and gone. TE numbers in New England have always been inconsistent, but I would take a shot by stashing Baker as a #2 TE if your thin at the position.

I'm considering stashing him as a #2 and then cutting him if he isn't getting at least equal reps as Watson. With all the receiving power on the Pats all a TE needs to do to become fantasy relevant is to catch the ball consistently as holes will be open all over the place. Watson's inconsistency could lead to a Baker 500 yard 6 TD season.

I think pretty clearly after the Thursday night games the two guys whose stock went up the most are Chaz Schillens and Sam Hurd. For me, I'm much higher on Schillens than Hurd.

Hurd has put himself in the drivers seat to win the WR2 over Austin in Dallas, but the WR2 might only be the fourth option in the passing game (behind Roy, Witten and Martellus Bennett.) Remember that many Dallas were excited about Hurd once-upon-a-time, but he simply couldn't stay healthy last year. That being said, I just don't see monster numbers out of him.

Schillens is really the guy that you should be getting excited about. As mention in the Schillens thread, he's going to be a monster in PPR leagues. Walker is done, and I don't expect big things out of Darrius "Skillet hands" Heyward-Bey. By all accounts Schillens is the WR1 in Oakland and is going to be Russell's first look. I could easilly see Schillens as a top 20 WR this year.

I liked Leinart last night. He shook off the rust after a shaky start and looked solid. He'll be the QB2 in Arizona and would post nice numbers if Warner isn't healthy. (Remember that Warner is 38.)

Crayton is #2 in Dallas. I think thats pretty much set in stone. Hurd will need to continue to outplay Austin to get #3 spot.

Last night ...I think I liked what I saw out of Eldelman the most... Theyre grooming him to return punts..I liked his quickness...he's a Wes Welker clone in the making. He broke Josh Cribbs total yards record at Kent State (rush/pass)...and we know how dynamic Cribbs is. It will be hard for him to breakthrough ... I don't really see him having a fantasy impact other than in the return game.

As far as "GEM"...maybe... Schillens...but again..how many catches are we talkin about...45rec max...IF that? ..barely #3 WR worthy? who knows...no one has really shined..

Real deep dynasty, but I liked what I saw out of Brandon Gibson. Can't believe how deep that PHI WR/RB corps is. No one really dominate but all interchangable and run that O like clockwork.

I really like what I saw from Edelman too, and I instantly picked him up in my dynasty league. I found it interesting that he was used with the first team offense. The Patriots must think highly of him.
