Walmart Makes it Official: Thanksgiving Is Dead (1 Viewer)

You people know I didn't write that article right? How about you make it Black Wednesday and you can shop then. I can't believe how willing everybody is to give up two paid days off of work. Or is it somebody elses problem, for now, since you don't work retail?
I don't get two paid days off work anyway

The economy is struggling and we know that one day of the year is going to be huge. Turning it into 2 days of consumers purchasing goods and putting money into the economy? I'm all for it.
There is no proof that people will actually spend more in fact they will probably spend less on Friday now because they will have already spent it on Thursday. Christmas spending doesn't increase because the days you can spend do.
True, but there are 6 fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.
Not sure that matters. People will shop and spend what they are going to spend. There isn't more or less disposable income to spend based on number of shopping days. If you are open Thursday you are simply cannibalizing Friday sales. And if you are open both days you are likely simply cannibalizing later buys not adding any real new sales overall.
Good point. I agree.

Who's giving up anything? Those people are hourly. They don't get paid if the store is closed.

What doesn't make sense to me is this: when you look at the sales figures from last year of opening on Thanksgiving vs the previous years of waiting until 4-6 am Black Friday, the added sales is so minor that it doesn't seem to be worth paying your associates double-time to be there. All it seemed to do was spread the sales out a bit to allow customers to shop other stores during the two days.
I think that you are missing the big picture. My understanding is that business is not a series of individual strings but a net that entangles all involved.
So you're saying that there are giant spiders involved? Because if that's what you're saying, I'm scared ####less.
And unfortunately it seems that Luke only memorized spells to defend against serpents and scorpions. Does Wal-Mart have a flamethrower section? Webs and spiders gunna burn!Schlzm
 :scared:

Maybe this means all the women will leave the house and go to Walmart during the football games. Win-Win

Meh. The lowlife rubes who live and die by Black Friday Sales aren't the people who Thanksgiving is meant for anyway.

What about the people who have been working the Thanksgiving buffet at Holiday Inn? What about them?
what about the poor schlub selling beer at the Lions game???

I'm not sure why this is such a big deal. If people want to shop on those days, go right ahead.
:goodposting:

Exactly. To each their own. If some family wants to make Walmart shopping part of their Thanksgiving tradition, that doesn't affect my family's tradition of dressing up like Pilgrims and Indians.

If it doesn't work, why would stores do it then?
Because they aren't always right and herd mentality? Once store A is open store B feels like it has to be open. Then store C says well I have to be open. It isn't about expected increased sales it's about countering what someone else was doing.
Wait, store B is bullying store A then,,,

I think you meant to say they make double time and a half.

Just like how everyone used to be off for Veterans Day when I was a kid that just isn't the case any more. It started with retail. It spread to everywhere else but banks. Even a lot of schools aren't off for it any more. Seems like Thanksgiving is next.
They swapped veterans day for martin luther king day. And when I was programming for a financial company, the day after Thanksgiving was always off as well.
Pretty sure a lot of states don't really give days off for MLK. I don't get it. Federal government may be closed but pretty much no one else is again other than banks.
Banks are now even open on the traditional "bank" holidays. But the Fed is still closed.
Depends on which part of the bank you are in. We are pretty much shut down but my investment banking friends work most bank holidays.

My boss certainly did some work on Veterans Day and probably will at least be emailing on Thanksgiving too. Most of that is due to tight deadlines unique to November though.

Hooray for banks! :)

Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year.
How so?
eat, drink, and watch football.. no gifts to buy
Soooo...just like any other Saturday or Sunday during the Fall/Winter but with fewer games on TV?
Your Sundays are better than mine.

If I get in 30mins of football I'm lucky

Sorry to hear that. By Monday I'm almost "footballed out".

Memorial Day and Labor Day are the best. Great weather and no obligation to go to someone's house.
Why wouldn't you want to go to someone elses house? They cook, they clean etc... You just showup, eat drink and be merry then leave. Schlzm

The cooking and cleaning doesn't make up for a two hour commute and having to spend like 8 hours in someone elses house.

Who spends those days indoors? It's all about the backyard with the grill going, enjoying the sun, drinking some beers and playing some horseshoes or the equivalent.

No work the next day.
Some of us live on the West Coast where football (except MNF) doesn't really affect the next work day.

Aren't we talking about Thanksgiving? I'm saying there's an obligation to go to someone's house at Thanksgivining which equates to 8 hours indoors.

I've never seen a game outside of PST and I had plenty of Mondays that were very uncomfortable due to overindulgence on Sunday.

But you still have to go to work the next day, right?

No. Somewhere in the middle it veered off to Memorial Day and Labor Day.

I'm completely ok with Black Thursday so longed the free wil embraced

And championed here extends to te employees in choosing to work or not work without reprisals.

And I'd be surprised if non-management got any sort of double time for working

I've no interest in ever shopping on any day duringafter Thanksgiving weekend. Way too much hassle for me.
Yep. ^ This. Consumerism, inadequacy issues, and "first world problems," all wrapped up with a pretty little bow.

I just marvel (and feel sad) at how people's lives and priorities are SO far out of whack that they would camp out for hours outside some big-box retailer, just to save X percent on some piece of crap that they probably don't even need. Amazing how things/possessions have replaced just about everything that is truly important in our society.
