Warning at my nieces' school (1 Viewer)

Would you send your kids to school tomorrow?

Written on the wall in a bathroom was a message warning kids to not attend school on 4/10 with a picture of a gun below.  The principal sent a message saying the police were investigating but that the message was innocuous. He didn't say anything about the warning or the picture.  My niece got the pic from a friend.

If that message is innocuous, what needs to be threatened for the principal to be worried?  I wouldn't be sending my kids to school and I'd be asking for a town hall with administration.

Something similar happened to my niece's school a couple weeks ago. Apparently there was some kind of group video chat thing some kids were doing with a couple kids from another school, and one of those kids made a "threat" that got reported. Most parents ended up keeping their kids home that day "just in case".

I live in a suburb and our local district gets bomb threats/gun threats once a month usually. Bomb threats have never been anything. Usually if a gun threat a large portion of the police force shows up for the day.

can't risk the kid missing a day of elementary school. the amount they'd fall behind is just unfathomable.

best to send them. if they get shot.. well.. that's the price of getting an education.

My kids already have off on Thurs and Fri for parent teacher conferences so they're definitely going to school tomorrow.  Damn kids just had spring break for a week.

Almost assuredly a prank - this is happening all over the country with little dip####s thinking they are being funny or trying to get out of school.  How many of these events have been announced ahead of time?  I want the school to thoroughly investigate and unless they figure out something before the next day (which they have a good chance of doing) they should have law enforcement on hand.  I wouldn’t question someone who kept their kid home but I think they would be perfectly safe.

To do what, exactly?
Why did the principal not share the nature of the threat with parents?  How did s/he determine that this threat was innocuous?

What did they do to protect students on 4/10 and what are they doing to ensure a school shooting doesn't occur?

This was at a high school.

Is this going to be like snow days where you get so many keep your kid home b/c some kid drew a gun on the wall days at which point days will need to be added to the end of the year?

The police are investigating. You know, the people actually tasked with that sort of thing.

And I thought your question was serious.  Listen, I know there's no way for you to understand this since I am sure you don't have kids.  There's no way that any fertile woman would talk to you let alone #### you.

I’d keep them home. If I sent them and something happened I’d never forgive myself. If I keep them home and nothing happens........who cares?

That happens in nearly every middle school and high school annually. That or someone posted a threat on social media or a crazy phone call threat. We’ve had all of these several times since Parkland.

This has happened at our kids junior high twice. Both times the decision on the veracity of the threat isn't made by our school but the LE officials. Both times it was something similar as to what you posted and both times nothing happened.

ETA I talked to the principal after the second threat and what he told me was that they can't tell who did it but have video in the hall outside the bathroom where it occurred and know it occurred between certain periods, the teachers go into each bathroom before the start of a period so they know it wasn't there at let's say 3nd period but was there at 4th. LE talked to all the kids that went into that bathroom and they made the decision about the threat.

A town hall each time, I'm sure.

i guess the the terrorists won.  Too many people afraid of their own shadow.
Haven't you tried to argue that the IRA isn't a terrorist organization and that Gerry Adams isn't a terrorist?  Still think that?  If so, your opinion has no credibility.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

But, I would not hesitate to send my kids to school in the situation described here - particularly if the school is aware of the situation.

Oh in that case...send the kids to school.

Will probably be the safest day in that schools history
We had a social media gun threat at my son's high school a couple months ago, and that was my thinking as well when we decided to send him to school. The situation was more than a bit different in that case, since the kid was known and put under surveillance (he was already out of school on suspension for something else) and there wasn't a specific date to the threat.  But still, with the police presence and everybody on alert, it seemed much less likely than usual that there would be any incident.

If I were so worried that this threat was legit that I'd keep my kid out of school for the day, I'm not sure I could send him back if there wasn't any kind of resolution. Wouldn't a week later (after everybody settled back down) be at least as threatening a time?

I would definitely throw out some ridiculous overreactions and pants sh###ing, for sure.  Looks like you're doing it right, GB.

awfully cavalier attitude about your kid's chances

guess you'll just make some more if one gets clipped?

nope - I've been clipped.  They're gonna have to survive somehow...

But, you can't hide in your room, just because the world is a scary place.
i can't but if someone says "i'm going to shoot up your kid's school tomorrow" i'm sure as #### not giving them a pat on the ### and a "good luck" on their way our the door in the morning

Since January, we have had two bomb threats, three arrests for guns on school property, and one terroristic threat arrest combined at our two girls' schools.  Never considered not sending them to school.

Agree.  My boys' high school has had multiple "threats" this school year.  One came out during the day and parents actually were driving to school in the middle of the day to pick their kids up.  I find that rediculous.  I find it difficult to believe that something could be that well spread on social media and through the school, and the administration/security would still allow something to happen.
