Warning - Novel Length - A Forum Manifesto (1 Viewer)

Hey Joe,

Nice manifesto.

I have a question about links:

Oftentimes, some news worthy tweets, articles, etc. from the non-mainstream press contain harsh language. Should we avoid posting links to these items? Or perhaps, rather than link to them, post a redacted version (e.g. not just relying on the language filter, but rather an actual - "[Redacted]" placeholder?)

I assume that we should not post links to humor and other non-news-worthy things that contain above PG level material, thus, I am only curious about true news worthy items.

Thanks.
Thanks man. (one of my favorite screen names btw) For humor stuff, yes you're right in please let's not link to stuff past PG rating. For more real news, please just use discretion. I know that's a gray answer but not sure how to say it. If it's important thing and it's just barely over the line is different from a trivial story way over the line. Sorry to be vague but is that enough to help?

One other important point I'll go back and add to the OP - Please use the report function.

We need your help on this. Some threads move very fast. Plus it's a large forum(s). We don't see everything instantly.

If you're seeing something that you feel is out of line with what I have in the original post, please use the report function. There's a "Report post" at the top of every post. Use it.

I'll add this though - please don't waste the moderator's time. Reporting something that's over the line is necessary. Reporting 20 barely offensive posts because you're mad is not ok. Again, the moderators are real people. If they see someone reporting a bunch of things that consistently are not over the line, that's not good for anyone.

But to be clear, when you legitimately and objectively report a post that's over the line - that is NOT being a "tattle tale". That's helping keep the forums healthy.

Thanks Joe for all you do.  I always had mixed feelings about whether there should be a politics subforum, but now that it's happened I would say it's a huge success.

Thanks fg. I had mixed feelings too and have been super pleased with how it's been so far. Hoping we can keep it that way. Thanks for the help.

Yes Joe...it is enough, and it is reasonable in my opinion.

Thanks a lot for the clarification.

Keep up the good work.

Second, consider this a reset. What's past is past from us. Please let's look at this as from now going forward. I know there have been slights and wrongs. I'm asking that you let us move forward from here.
Does this mean that anyone previously banned in the past is now un-banned?

FWIW, and I doubt anyone cares about my opinion, but I always appreciated the freedom aspect of the Free For All sub-forum.  As long as people were respectful of each other for the most part, it was cool here.  I guess the divisiveness of recent political situations has led to a large drop on the respectfulness front... steps to rectify that aspect are fine and welcomed.  I'm not sure heavy policing the this forum is the correct solution though.  Anything that is a gray area (like say, where to procure Cialis or Yoga Pants Thread or anything AZ Ron writes) have been some of the best and most interesting reading on this forum for years.  Those threads don't stand a chance now.  Honestly, I'm kinda sad... I feel like I'm witnessing the death of this forum.  GL

There are quite a few that are really going to have to change their ways in the political discussions if this new line is enforced.  It will be interesting to see how things turn out.

Not sure it's that clear. As the old cliche says, opinions are like #######s... everyone's got one and they all stink.
As an example from the political sub forum.

Posting in the investigation thread that you'll wait til the investigation is over to believe something's that have been speculated is ok.  ???

Posting in the same thread..."hey is this still going...you guys still wasting time in this uncle jerk echo chamber?"  Probably not ok?

Thanks for the thoughtful manifesto Joe.

Upon reading, my first reaction was "This isn't really anything new."  Going all the way back to Cheatsheets.net days, the fact that this has been a "PG" site was always a positive differentiator for me.

There are plenty of other FF sites where you can post racy pics and cuss all you want w/o a filter.  I think it's great that FBG offers an alternative to the "norm."

Am I really the first one to bring up the elephant in the room that is Dodds and what he had done here previously? Curious about Joe's thoughts on that behavior.

Thanks Joe.

What makes this place great is that I know I can click on any thread from work and I'll be safe.  There's huge value in that.

Last one. Know when to take a break. Social interaction online can be addicting. Know yourself and know when it's time to step away for a break. This relates to the real life community thing but please don't neglect the people closest to you in favor of a message board.
You think that was written with me in mind?  ;)

If so, not to worry. I have a very healthy relationship with my family, always have, and nothing that I do on the internet, including this forum, has ever gotten in the way of that.
Interesting that you'd respond like this Tim....perhaps you feel differently at a subconscious level  ;)

Agree completely.  Still don't understand what the purpose is of making the place PG. Sure, saying "that's the way we want it" is basically the bottom line and I get that it's Joe's forum and he can do with it as he pleases, but it still isn't really a reason.   The types of threads you mention were one of the few areas everyone was pretty much always excellent to each other.

Neither one of those is an example of an opinion.

What threads have not been work safe?   There's a huge middle ground between NSFW and strictly PG only.

If someone, maybe in a position of authority on the boards, posts an absolutely crazy, unsubstantiated statement may we call it out for what it is?

??

Damn, g-o-d damnd, son of a #####, crapton, #### ton...are theses ok or not?

In the same way that people know what to expect when they step foot in The Shark Pool or The Political Sub-Forum, it would be nice if there was a sub-forum here that was a little looser since we're all adults here.

Overall, I think the forum is well run and a good place to hang out.

Same as day one, guy

Interestingly, a guy in Washington can talk about where he's legally buying Marijuana. But talk about how the Washington guy can get around his state law and illegally play DFS is not. A guy in Ohio can talk about how he's playing DFS but not ask for help for him to illegally buying marijuana.
Love ya Joe... and this place, obviously.

I'm a bit confused by the above. Are you implying that only members that reside in states where X or Y is legal will be allowed to participate in discussions about X / Y? Or are you implying simply that people who reside in a place where X or Y is illegal can't openly discuss means to circumvent the law? Does this apply to staff who live in states where DFS is illegal? I live in the bible belt (as do you) where everything is illegal.

Curious for clarification there.... thanks.

Agreed 100%

I get the reason behind ramping up policing things... but if new rules prohibit that type of content, it will be a significant loss for the forum, IMO.

Being curious is illegal in your state.  Sorry, but :reported:

David and I talked about that and we're good. That's part of the reset I'm talking about with "Second, consider this a reset. What's past is past from us. Yeah, I think the entire tenor of the political threads will need to change - and I think that's a great shift. I think we can all take it down a notch and things will be much better on the aggregate for it having happened.

??

Damn, g-o-d damnd, son of a #####, crapton, #### ton...are theses ok or not?
Damn and crapton won't get filtered. It's best not to but it happens. Please not on the others. And guys please don't turn this to a list of what will and won't fly. I trust you guys to know what is ok.

Thanks HF. I'm hoping so. We'll see.
I'd like to suggest something I try to do myself, and I've mentioned it a number of times on here.  Obviously no one is perfect at it, but the more we try to read each other's posts charitably - that is, when there are two ways to take something that's written, to assume it's the one that isn't foolish/offensive/insulting/attacking rather than the one that is - makes a massive difference in the discussion.  I find when I'm able to do that, most of the rest of the rules in the original post kind of fall into place.
