I for one am shocked that Warren Sapp, who has made a name for himself as someone who chooses his words with great care and with no regard for publicity, would do something like this.
Yeah, I don't see how any of this language applies to anything Sapp did. I'm sure federal charges are forthcoming though, lol.It was in the linked article...maybe read the subject of this thread before commenting in it?I'd be happy to check out whichever federal law Sapp violated here. Thanks in advance for posting it.Federal Law down?I'm genuinely at a loss as to why this would be something that Sapp should not report. This isn't like a witness against the mafia, can someone explain to me why this is such a bad thing?Federal labor law protects employees against retribution as result of complaining about unsafe work environments. The fact that Sapp, an analyst for the NFL Network, might have outed a whistle-blower could pose a problem for Sapp and the league, Los Angeles-based employment lawyer Arthur Whang told FOXSports.com.“Sapp is technically a league employee,” said Whang, the principal of the Whang Law Firm. “If Shockey is the whistle-blower, he is protected. So, by outing him, Sapp may have opened Shockey up to retaliation, such as someone not signing him.”The 1970 Occupational Safety and Health Act specifically addresses whistle-blower retaliation:“No person shall discharge or in any manner discriminate against any employee because such employee has filed any complaint or instituted or caused to be instituted any proceeding under or related to this act or has testified or is about to testify in any such proceeding or because of the exercise by such employee on behalf of himself or others of any right afforded by this act.”

players snitch on each other every week when complaining to the refs'Phenix said:You do not snitch on your brotherhood that you were a part of.
How about Sapp coming out and revealing his source?Or, should I believe you or Sean Payton who said Shockey didn't have anything to do with it?Damn...which person to go with...wow, the pressure...which way...which way...this is a tough one.I just don't know who to believe. You or someone who involved in this. Are you sure he didnt do it? its he said she said. Its ok for one guy to say shockey didnt do it, but sapp cant say shockey did and you believe some other guy without proof but not sapp. That does not sound like an open minded opinion, it sounds like bias on your part. One guy said it wasnt shockey so it wasnt shockey, what other proof do you need.So many in here were so quick to crucify Shockey, and he didn't do it.And if that's the case then the whole thread is for not...Sapp slandered Shockey on national tv, and could be sued for it. James Brown said this morning it was an employee under Sean Payton and Gregg Williams who told. He said it was not a player. He said the employee felt like he was mistreated under Payton and Williams, and went to the league and told them about the bounty program.FYI...What Sapp did is in no way snitching.Think it was lame of Sapp to "out" Shockey as the "snitch". First of all, it's just hearsay and Sapp said he didn't check the facts, but he believed his source. Secondly, Sapp has repeatedly said that they should be punished and that there was no place for this kind of thing in football. By calling Shockey a snitch, he's saying that even though it's wrong, nothing should be said about it. Thirdly...Hey SappI'm genuinely at a loss as to why this would be something that Sapp should not report. This isn't like a witness against the mafia, can someone explain to me why this is such a bad thing?for snitching on Shockey.

Well I guess you just have bad parents. They never told you that there's a wide range between telling on your siblings every five seconds and high treason. No one here is saying that the person that told on the Saints is a great person or whatever. If it does turn out to be Shockey, it doesn't change my bad opinion of him. I think the same holds true for most of the posters. The person that told the nfl on the saints likely did it to get back at the organization for their own selfish reasons.'Phenix said:Its ok for our parents to tell us no one likes tattletales (sp?) as we grow up, but now we call our parents liars, because i guess most love them. I cannot believe the people defending scum like shockey. did you not see his encounter with toomer just a few days ago. this guy is something, unless your a saints hater then he is your new best friend. So your line of courageous vs. snitch/rat is if whether or not your are publicly identified. Got it.Yes it does...unless you're unidentified...'Avery said:"It's easy to stand in the crowd but it takes courage to stand alone."Neither.They're ruled by THEIR professional industry...not yours...not prison...not street codes.Admittedly, I didn't read the whole thread but why is someone who reports someone breaking the rules a "snitch" or a "rat" or are our expectations of behavior in professional industries now ruled by prison and street codes of conduct?
There's a reason why there was one rat/snitch/ whistleblower and not a bunch...
Therefore, if Shockey was the source, by "outting" him, Sapp turned Shockey from a rat, snitch into a courageous whistleblower, right?
Link?So the NFL sat Sapp down and re-inforced to him that he is an analyst, NOT a reporter and that he is to forward and "news" he has to the news editor to followup and make sure it's up to thee journalistic standards before the NFLN reports it.In other words, Sapp was wrong, it wasn't up to their standards, the NFLN looks bad and is nervous about their legal liability and Sapp needs to shut his mouth.

This comment may best exhibit my very mixed feelings about this affair. First things first, I should say that I am NOT a Shockey fan. My feeling though is that he was not a part of this "brotherhood", and may not have been entirely aware of it for some time. Yes, he was a Saints player--in their Offense. As a TE he would not only be uninvolved in the bounty program--he was very likely a prime target of other teams' bounty programs given his high profile and confrontational attitude. Given that, alomg with his alienation with the Saints--why wouldn't he rat 'em out?'Phenix said:You do not snitch on your brotherhood that you were a part of.

eta: CBS Sports 'NFL Insider' Mike FreemanWarren Sapp has long been an idiot. But this is why he's wrong about Jeremy Shockey and this is how Bountygate likely got rolling.
First, some background. Weeks ago, after the NFL first released its Bountygate findings, there was a rumor floating around the sport that Jeremy Shockey, former tight end for the Saints, was the source for the NFL. I asked people familiar with the NFL's investigation and was told Shockey had nothing to do with the case. Nothing. At all.
I dropped the story and kept digging. Then Sapp went on the NFL Network, weeks later, and repeated the rumor. My information told me this was false so a few days ago I tweeted as much. My guess: Sapp heard it from some of the same people I did but didn't ask about it. He just went with it.
Based on numerous conversations with people both in the NFL and union this is how Bountygate got started and it had nothing to do with Shockey.
There was no Patient Zero for Bountygate. There was no one person who got the ball rolling. Based on people I speak to the NFL heard of the bounty system from a variety of sources. The league cast a very wide net and caught many fish simultaneously.
The idea there was one guy appeals to the conspiracy theorists particularly to a Saints fan base looking to blame anyone but the culprits themselves.
The idea of one whistleblower also shows a lack of understanding of how the NFL's security arm works. NFL Security is full of ex-FBI agents and police officers. They are the best of the best. They can find out anything.
And keep this in mind. I'm told a nice chunk of the NFL's proof are e-mails between Saints officials themselves.
This can't be stressed enough. In much of this case the Saints outed themselves with their own internal communications. One example is the e-mail from two-time convicted felon Mike Ornstein to coach Sean Payton asking Payton to put cash into the bounty pool.
That's not Shockey. That's the ####### Saints putting things in writing.
Now I did hear this and no one has denied it so far. That a former Saints employee was one of the key figures early on. (One of...not the only one.) I called the person. He said he couldn't talk about it and referred me to his attorney. The attorney never called me back. So, there's that.
This is a highly complicated story with numerous moving parts. There are some parts of it that will remain a secret. Maybe forever.

Good article. I find it funny that a word can make it on the CBS Sports site but can't on this board.According to this writer it wasn't Shockey: "No single whistleblower in Bountygate"
