I for one am shocked that Warren Sapp, who has made a name for himself as someone who chooses his words with great care and with no regard for publicity, would do something like this.

I'm genuinely at a loss as to why this would be something that Sapp should not report. This isn't like a witness against the mafia, can someone explain to me why this is such a bad thing?

Yeah, I don't see how any of this language applies to anything Sapp did. I'm sure federal charges are forthcoming though, lol.

Think it was lame of Sapp to "out" Shockey as the "snitch". First of all, it's just hearsay and Sapp said he didn't check the facts, but he believed his source. Secondly, Sapp has repeatedly said that they should be punished and that there was no place for this kind of thing in football. By calling Shockey a snitch, he's saying that even though it's wrong, nothing should be said about it. Thirdly...Hey Sapp for snitching on Shockey.

FYI...What Sapp did is in no way snitching.

Sapp slandered Shockey on national tv, and could be sued for it. James Brown said this morning it was an employee under Sean Payton and Gregg Williams who told. He said it was not a player. He said the employee felt like he was mistreated under Payton and Williams, and went to the league and told them about the bounty program.

And if that's the case then the whole thread is for not...

So many in here were so quick to crucify Shockey, and he didn't do it.

Are you sure he didnt do it? its he said she said. This comment may best exhibit my very mixed feelings about this affair. First things first, I should say that I am NOT a Shockey fan. My feeling though is that he was not a part of this "brotherhood", and may not have been entirely aware of it for some time. Yes, he was a Saints player--in their Offense. As a TE he would not only be uninvolved in the bounty program--he was very likely a prime target of other teams' bounty programs given his high profile and confrontational attitude. Given that, alomg with his alienation with the Saints--why wouldn't he rat 'em out?

Interesting decision by NFLN. On the one hand, they've made a clear statement about acceptable news gathering standards, on the other they've landed fairly gently on Sapp. It could be that he's been exhibiting good behavior up till now and just made a stupid mistake. Based on numerous conversations with people both in the NFL and union this is how Bountygate got started and it had nothing to do with Shockey.

There was no Patient Zero for Bountygate. There was no one person who got the ball rolling. Based on people I speak to the NFL heard of the bounty system from a variety of sources. The league cast a very wide net and caught many fish simultaneously.

The idea there was one guy appeals to the conspiracy theorists particularly to a Saints fan base looking to blame anyone but the culprits themselves.

The idea of one whistleblower also shows a lack of understanding of how the NFL's security arm works. NFL Security is full of ex-FBI agents and police officers. They are the best of the best. They can find out anything.

And keep this in mind. I'm told a nice chunk of the NFL's proof are e-mails between Saints officials themselves.

This can't be stressed enough. In much of this case the Saints outed themselves with their own internal communications. One example is the e-mail from two-time convicted felon Mike Ornstein to coach Sean Payton asking Payton to put cash into the bounty pool.

That's not Shockey. That's the ####### Saints putting things in writing.

Now I did hear this and no one has denied it so far. That a former Saints employee was one of the key figures early on. (One of...not the only one.) I called the person. He said he couldn't talk about it and referred me to his attorney. The attorney never called me back. So, there's that.

This is a highly complicated story with numerous moving parts. There are some parts of it that will remain a secret. Maybe forever.

Re: a potential lawsuit from Shockey, I'm against frivolous suits, but in this case, yes, I think it's very plausible that teams may not want Shockey if they think he'll detract from the locker room. In which case, Sapp damaged Shockey's earning potential.

Sapp is so unlikeable that I'm shocked he's still on the air. I have no idea how they keep a person in a broadcasting position that just makes up words. Add the bounty gate thing, his multiple off field issues and now the Brandon Marshall thing, I don't just don't get it. He was making the rounds last month on radio stations trying to sell his book and I kept wondering who in their right mind would pay to read about this low life.

The Marshall thing is just bad all around. Sapp is a moron, but you'd think he'd been around the game long enough to know not to call someone that if you're on TV talking for a living. Or you know, in general. Then you've got Marshall never missing an opportunity to fail to keep his nose clean. If you're going to go after Sapp there, please don't do it with the gimmick of being above it with the "pray for him" schtick. And then apologize for getting into it while being adamant about meaning everything you said.
