Was Michael Turner Worth the Tender? (1 Viewer)

Think of the Michael Turner situation like your car insurance. You pay for the peace of mind. If you're not in an accident, you have basically flushed money down the toilet (though you've avoided any legal problems).

.....hmm, car insurance. Or I could take that insurance money and add nitros to my car to give me an advantage at the race track. :goodposting:

the facts speak for themselves...the deal was on the table for Turner to be traded to Tennessee and AJ Smith decided at the last minute to get greedy and up the price.
Before the draft AJ didn't mince words about what he was asking for in return for Turner; 1st & 2nd. After the draft why was everyone surprised it turned out AJ wanted..... SURPRISE! A 1st & 2nd. Those are the facts.
And now the Chargers will get nothing..those are the facts as well!

They will get a comp pick so it won't be nothing = probably a 3rd...

For how they are using him this year a #1 would have been nice.

Just asking, does anyone change their mind if:

A. If LT gets injured

B. If A happens and Turner leads the NFL in rushing?

C. If A happens and SD wins the Super Bowl?

D. If LT stays healthy, but Turner helps win the SB?

Or will this be a dumb move no matter what?

What if they franchise him? Then they get something no?

I would say that if any of the above should happen, then the SD higher ups will come out looking brilliant.Conversly, if they miss the playoffs with a healthy LT, they look foolish.

Be careful, I've brought this up and got lynched by the dynasty Turner owners. I dont think AJ is leaning this way, due to cap ramifications etc. But he did it to Brees and got a one year deal. Lots can happen.

Seems logical to me. Turner is not your everyday backup RB. The stakes will be high for him. I think AJ Smith with the criticism he's beginning to get would be a good option for this. I believe teams can waive the compensation or scale it back too. So he could potentially let Turner walk for a 1st rounder only. This could backfire though as this next draft appears to be thick with talent at the RB spot.

Smith: Turner not available - Sat Oct 13 10:37:00 a.m. ET 2007

(Rotoworld) Chargers GM A.J. Smith reiterated Friday that Michael Turner isn't on the trade block.

Impact: "He is not available," Smith said. "For some reason, some people either don't believe it or it means nothing to them. Or, I can't argue with this part, just because he said it he could change his hand. But I'm only concerned about this particular year for our team, and I like our players."
Wow. Spoken like someone whos job is on the line.

As someone else said... he was an insurance policy. If someone has paid for auto insurance the past ten years but never had an accident do you think they are an idiot? They could have invested that $ and come out way ahead.

Or someone that considers this year an opportunity to deep into the playoffs.... which has been stated over and over and over again.

The Chargers get is services for a year. Tomlinson is being spelled and keeping his carries down so he is fresher for longer is very adventageous to the Chargers post-season hopes.

Even if they underperform this year I would tend to think AJ's job is safe. He's made some solid moves as far as drafting and keeping the right guys. Keep in mind, writers crave attention, this is one of them.

-So far this season (2007) between rushing and receiving stats Tomlinson is averaging 24.5 touches per game through 6 games. He is on pace for 392 total touches.-Last season (2006) Tomlinson averaged 25.25 touches per game. For a total 404 total touches.

*Tomlison is averaging .875 less touches a game this year. Extremely minimal.

-Turner last year (2006) averaged 6.3 touches per game. Over a season that works out to 102 total touches.

-This season (2007) Turner is averaging 5.6 touches per game. Over a season that works out to 90.6 total touches.

*It is nice in theory to think Turner is spelling Tomlinson more and keeping him more fresh, however the numbers prove that this is not happening at all.

AJ had a gamble to make this off season. His gamble was this:

- keep Turner as insurance in the likelihood that Tomlinson had a freak injury and you have a very adequate starting material RB in Turer to fill the void left by Tomlinson. The gamble being of course knowing you are going to lose Turner in the off season due to free agency and get a lot less value then he could have gotten this year. Putting his cards more into this year with this gamble

vs

Getting a first round pick for Turner and using it to better your team for this year and the future. Playing for this year a little and more for the future in following years.

I think he should have went with the second alternative, but I don't think it was a terrible decision in keeping Turner and understand why he did do it.

the team was great last year. As GM you try to keep a good squad in tact. That said , you shoulda swallowed your pride and done what was needed to keep the coaching staff in tact. Alas I digress...

Depends on your point of view. IMO he played an important part in the game yesterday and had a big role in SD getting to the AFC title game. If you offered me a late 1st rounder for the AFC title game... I'd take the AFC title game.

from October? Looks like they made the right decision ...from what they got yesterday and assuming LT is less than 100% going into next week.

If somehow the Bolts make it past the Patriots and M.Turner has a large role in it... the move to keep him will look brilliant.

A cost of ~ $2 million to get to the AFC Championship game? I don't think the question even needs to be answered.

Well, it's kind of the type of question you won't know the answer to until the end of the year.... right?
