We Actually Have A Game This Weekend! (1 Viewer)

Kind of hard to believe, preseason is here.

Sure, it's preseason, but we always bite, don't we?

Following weekend gets a full slate.

Anything in particular anybody looking for in these games?

To make sure your players don't get hurt. That's always by far the most meaningful thing to watch in the preseason. Everything else is completely overhyped (breakout players, players that look bad, etc.).

Minus Manning, I doubt we'll see Harrison at all.

Roy Hall will certainly be one to watch, as mentioned.

Mike Hart.

The young Redskin WRs.

The 'Skins starters on offense are going to get one series according to Zorn. Portis won't play, and I don't think the rookie WR's will either.

That's probably also true of the defense (1 series for the starters), though they're a bit thin at some spots due to injuries.

I will be watching and seeing if anyone catches my eye, hoping to find this year's Ryan Grant or Selvin Young. Same as I do every year.
Tough matchup for that, given that Portis and Addai have about as strong of a hold on both the starting role and proportion of carries as any RB's have in the NFL nowadays. Moreoever, they even have two talented and established backups in Betts and Rhodes. I think you look at how the rookies are doing, and this has a couple of good TE prospects in Fred Davie and Jacob Tamme. IDP players will find the backups at the LB and S spots interesting too. Both teams overall already have pretty set lineups with relatively few positions up for grabs.

gotta keep my eyes on the backup RBs .... Rhodes, Betts etc.

They're just an injury away from starting

If you ever get the chance to go, Hall of Fame weekend in Canton is very special. I have my tickets in hand and am looking forward to the game and festivities. I had a nice conversation with Jim Brown last year.

Truthfully, I'll watch about a half just because it's kinda cool to see guys in NFL unis running around again, then I'm out. The teams that play 5 preseason games (as these two teams will) offer very little in game one worth analyzing. They just want to get their valuable people on to the next week healthy.

Ryan Grant was traded and mainly because of how well he played in the preseason. Also, it was more of a general comment about preseason instead of this specific game. IDP players and dynasty leaguers should always watch as much preseason football as they can.

I think the most meaningful thing to watch for is who starts week 3 of the preseason. That's pretty much your starting lineup for opening week right there. Position battles are all put to rest in week 3.

For Washington:

Anthony Mix- Might have an outside chance to hold the young rooks off for that 3rd wr spot. I think he might be the Kevin Walter of this year.

For the Colts:

Mike Hart- gotta love this guy.

Chad Simpson- UFA and was my guy to watch where he went. Too bad he went to indy and should be a long shot to make their roster.

Rookie TE, Tamme I believe it is.

I have to disagree. Mix's big adversary is 1) James Thrash, or 2) whether the team decides to keep 6 WR's. The top 4 WR's on that team for offensive purposes are clearly Moss, Randle El, Thomas and Kelly. I liked Mix's potential, especially given his size and the lack of size elsewhere at the WR position, but when they drafted two good-sized WR's the writing was on the wall. Fortunately for him, he's a very good special teams contributor; unfortunately for him, he's just not going to get much of an opportunity to contribute on offense.

I'll be up there too. Couldn't miss Monk going in and to add Green to the mix is gonna be out of this world.Any pointers for the HOF itself? Must see displays? How about the induction ceremony itself. I have floor seats - can you take anything in to the stadium?

I don't want this to come across as "wise ####", but have you been able to spot gems, evaluate how they play and determine whether they will be successful? I ask because I always thought Michael Pittman ran just "lights out", but obviously that has not translated into him getting and securing a starting role (and now it is probably too late). When I see an ADP or LT, of course I know they are special, but I remember seeing Thomas Jones in college thinking he would be the next great RB...missed on that one too.

The ceremony is usually better than the game. The Hall of Fame building has a nice layout. I believe entrance is still $18. The biggest attraction for me is that many former HOFer's are on hand. Tents are set up where you can meet with, get autographs, and take pictures with this years class as well as visiting members of the Hall. I saw somewhere that Gale Sayres, **** Butkis, Dan Marino, and Joe Montanta are some of the players that have committed this year. I have always gone to the tents for the 3:00 to 5:00 session on Sunday, which is just a few hours before the game. Price depends on who you want to get an autograph with and what is actually autographed. I would suggest going cheap because once you are inside the tent you can take as many pictures as you want. Last year I paid to see Jim Brown, but while I was there I was able to get some nice pictures of Joe Green, Jack Lambert, Paul Hornung, and Fred Belinticoff (sp?).

It's always going to be hit and miss when looking at the low level prospects, but occasionally I think anyone can find a gem once in a while if they trust their eyes. Grant played very well in preseason, showing very good vision and hitting the hole. He played against backups, which is the toughest thing to judge. I certainly can't say I expected him to turn into what he did last year, but without seeing him play, I doubt I would have given him a second thought, even after he was traded to the Packers. Also, it does not have to be a superstar to help your team. Think Kenton Keith last year, or Selvin Young. Same thing but to a lesser degree. I had one or both in various leagues and both helped win games or were traded. I like to focus on players who had injuries but showed some ability, or players who had academic or disciplinary trouble. Gary Russell is one from last year. I remember him from college at Minnesota. He sat out a year and went undrafted. I still think he can play and I wish the Steelers had not been able to draft Mendenhall because I wanted to see Russell play. Stash his name in the back of your brain for the future. The odds are probably low of finding quality players like the above, but it is possible. I owned all of the above in various leagues and had I not seen them play, I may not have owned any of them. They were not much on paper.

I like watching these games for the "roster spot" battles... and seeing how guys from FCS schools (or 6th/7th round picks) play in comparison to the talent around them.

I'll be focusing on QB Jared Lorenzen and RB Clifton Dawson for Indy if either gets into the game. I liked Dawson coming out of Harvard and hope he can make the team again this year.

The player I'm going to most watch is this rookie G that everyone at Skins camp is raving about. If he can prove to be as good as the practice reports then that is going to be huge for the Skins Oline. He could push to be a starter and at the very least he will add much needed depth. As a Portis owner, this is the only thing of relevance in this game to me.

Malcolm Kelly returned to practice and may get a few plays on Sunday, per Jason La Canfora's Wash Post blog:

Kelly Practices A Little; Fabini Does NotRookie WR Malcolm Kelly took limited work during practice, but came through well. Kelly participated in individual drills and ran some routes, though not quite at full speed. He said the swelling and inflammation in his hamstring is dissipating, and the injury is not really painful at this point, but "it's more like it's weak," Kelly said, adding "he felt pretty good" during the afternoon practice.Coach Jim Zorn said it is conceivable Kelly could take part in Sunday's preseason opener against the Colts for a few plays, but a decision will not be made until later in the week. Zorn said Kelly will likely take part in team drills today - but mostly on running plays - getting used to running at reduced speed before really sprinting. No one wants a setback at this point."We still don't want him to push it," Zorn said

Agreed. I watched a ton last year(thank you Tivo and NFL network) and noticed Big Ben going to Holmes time and again. Drafted both late in multiple leagues.

I didn't know there was a game this weekend, and I highly doubt I'll watch it. I can't remember the last time I watched a preseason game. I feel like that would be encouraging the NFL to charge full price for fake football and I don't want to support that. Plus, the games are meaningless.

I will, however, go to the "analysis of the first game" thread on this board and read what people have to say. And if I lived in the area, I'd probably attend whatever HOF ceremonies are open to the public.

But if I just want to see a bunch of guys running around in NFL jerseys, I'll tailgate.

You forgot to tell him that Mix has been out nursing an injury (Hammy) the several days/practices too. Of course, that doesn't help him.

For you Dynasty & IDPers, here are the guys to watch this weekend for the Colts:

Marcus Howard- has been incredibly fast off the corner thus far.

Phillip Wheeler- Another who just got startedm but has looked good.

Clint Sessions- Looking to sew up a starting LB spot.

Aromashadu- Looked better than Roy Hall thus far.

Hall- will get plenty of looks in these early games.

Pierre Garcon- Highly regarded WR/with KR potential.

ETA: Courtney Roby is another who has lit it up early on at TC. He is also a guy who could stick as a WR/KR.

For 'Skins fans...the Safeties are one spot to watch. Who will play opposite LaRon? Will LaRon really play FS or will he be the SS? I think it depends on how it all shakes out between the others.I agree that watching the OL play in general, since we had so many injuries a year ago at those positions.

I'm really interested to see Garcon play. He has NFL size, speed, and skills, but lacks experience against top level competition. He is probably a bit raw, but definitely worth keeping an eye on. He is a good player to stash if you are in a deeper dynasty league.

I think Landry is a virtual lock to play free safety because of his ball skills and coverage abilities...not to mention the Redskins not having any other safety who is good in coverage. However, Landry is good enough to be great at either spot, but free safety is a need area.

I don't think so. Nothing good has been reported about him from Redskin camp, and he may hang on due to playing on special teams.

There continue to be good camp reports about Reed Doughty at safety. I'll admit, when he was on the field last year I cringed because I thought he looked small and slow. But he's apparently bulked up, and mentally he's quite a tough guy (his kid's been through some serious illness I believe). I'm guessing he'll start at the other safety spot this season. The rookie G mentioned is Chad Rinehart, who has supposedly been knocking D-linemen on their ### regularly in practice.

He made the play off the day last saturday when he caught a long pass, outran the DB and knocked over the deep safety on his way to the endzone. I agree that he is facing a tough challenge in terms of roster spots, but he has had moments at camp. I will also be at the HoF and am looking forward to every single moment of it.

It's Doughty's job to lose:
Asked about competition between Reed Doughty and Schweigert, defensive coordinator Greg Blache said: "Reed's our safety. Stuart has to earn a roster spot on this football team."

I heard an interview with Schweigert the other day and he basically said the same thing --- that he needed to prove to the other players and to the coaches that they didn't need to be worried when he was on the field, that right now they had no idea what he could do, and that he was looking forward to tonight's game to start showing them.
