Week 17 Game Thread - Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers (1 Viewer)

VJax might be a good WR1 to target fairly late next year. He has emerged as the best receiving option for SD.
Kind of amazing to watch some of these WRs progress. He had rock hands for years and now he's flying around making great grabs every week. Very different than RBs who are pretty much sink or swim right off the bat.

Cutler has been so good at throwing the ball right before getting hit this year. Has a good sense of what is going on in the pocket.

Cutler seems like a guy that would tip over someone in a wheelchair just for giggles. There is something about him that rubs me the wrong way. He seems like a jerk. I might be wrong, but as the cabbie on Seinfeld said "smugness is not a good quality"

just sayin'
I feel the same way about Rivers...Maybe they deserve each other...
I agree. Rivers was the jerk in the "incident". It's buy one get one free at the "jerk Store" tonight.
:goodposting: perfect reference..
Move it here.
Sorry your team is gonna miss the playoffs. But out of incredible respect to you, i'll stick with the "Cutler stinks" or "denver blows" comments from now on.

There's already a thread for this.
come again?
there's an actual thread here, where 14 year-old girls are discussing how Cutler and Rivers are both icky meanies, and are totally not cute.
I don't want to get into it much, but I was a lot happier with the Chargers when Brees was here. There were no icky threads then, he's a lot classier than Rivers and can toss it as well as Rivers does. Just my .02. Who else did the Bolts end up getting from the Eli trade?

Merriman, Kaeding, and one other starter. I don't remember who.

Bailey getting absolutely killed out there.
He is getting no help. It must be killing him to be surrounded by such ineptness.
... and he's clearly not as healthy as he could be. It's a shame because he is clearly a difference-maker when he is 100%.
Yep. But even if he was 100%, there is only so much he could do on a defense this bad.
Rivers has all day to throw. Doesn't matter who is playing behind this front 4 if Denver doesn't start blitzing a little.
He's getting nearly max protect with 6 lineman and LT to chip or Hester.

There were also alot less playoff wins with Brees too

Cutler was my QB1 this fantasy season, he's very frustrating to own. I think Shanny has done a terrible job of play calling this year. They both deserve some blame. Shannys play calling & Cutler trying to throw the ball THROUGH defenders half the time.

Does anyone actually think that Denver can beat ANY of the other AFC playoff team right now? I dont

Anyway bad throw by Cutler. That IMO sealed the game. Yeah I know a whole half to play etc but how often do teams come back from that kind of defecit

And there is Cutler being Cutler.
:fishing:
Not really. He looks amazing and then he forces something in the endzone because he can't throw anything but bullets.
He has NO help tonight. Tatum Bell is their 8th RB this year. His receivers are dropping balls. His defense is pitiful. To win, they are going to have to score a lot, so it is hard not to have the mindset that you have to force a few throws. You are not going to win this game by checking down to the guy in the flat and kicking FGs all day (especially when your FG kicker will probably miss them, anyway). Cutler doesn't always make the best decisions, but you have to realize what he is up against and what little he has on his side right now.

Yep. Rivers having perhaps the greatest season ever by a San Diego QB and some people still talking about Drew Brees. Unreal.

Please elaborate. Denver has a top 5 offense despite losing 7 RBs to IR.

Once they invested in Rivers (before Brees emerged), they didn't have much choice. They tried to move him before the last year on his contract, but there was no interest. It was also a rotator cuff injury to this throwing arm - the same kind of injury that took all the burst out of Pennington's arm.

Bell is averaging 8 yards/carry and has 50 yards rushing. I don't know why Shanahan isn't running more.

Meh. He still has lots of weapons. Marshall, Royal, Stokely, and Scheffler are a heckuva receiving crew. Cutler's biggest problem is that he's the 2nd best QB in tonight's game.

first of all, the play caller is Jeremy Bates, so there is that.

Rivers having perhaps the greatest season ever by a San Diego QB and some people still talking about Drew Brees. Unreal.
I think they are two of the best QBs in the game. There wasn't a bad choice to be made, but the decision for Rivers made the most sense by far.

I don't put a lot of blame for this season on Shanahan (as a coach) or Cutler. They have both done about as much as could be expected from them.

My bad, rotator cuff. I know, I understand why they did what they did and it's hindsight.....still

Bell's one good run was through a hole so huge, the average FBG could have scored on it. And I wish they would have tried running the ball more.

They are, but they are dropping too many balls tonight. Cutler's biggest problem isn't that; it is being the QB on a team that has a terrible defense. Tough to win consistently when your defense stinks. Just ask Philip Rivers, whose record this season after tonight will be the same as Jay Cutler's.

Yes, they lost a boatload of RB's, and i'm sure thats why they are 1 dimensional and predicable. But they are very inconsistant and they underperform in must win type games. I'll take a consistant effort througout the season, rather that a few HUGE games followed be several stinkers & repeat. You can't count on anything with this team. You have NO idea what you're getting from week to week.

They ARE lucky to have a chance to win the division and make the playoffs.

Good luck next year

Brees is a great QB. In hindsight I would have liked to have kept him, but he was not so good his first three years before they picked up Rivers. Then he ended up with a rotator cuff injury when they were deciding on who to keep long-term. SD still made him a pretty good offer it just wasn't as good as the Saints. The Saints took a big gamble and it paid off. I still think going with Rivers was the right call at the time.

Helped turn a 3-13 team into a consistent playoff contender.

Thx to Ed Hochuli. Otherwise, this game would be meaningless.

Even if you take out his biggest run he is averaging over 4 ypc on the rest. Plus, he has a couple of nice catches. They did the same thing against Buffalo. Racked up a ton of yards but just couldn't put it in the endzone. They don't have a RB problem right now. They simply can't finish their drives.

Yeah the play has been inconsistent. That goes with an 8-8 record. You didn't elaborate on why you think the play calling has been subpar though.

#2 in offense on yards - #19 on points scored. For the last several years Broncos have always struggled in the red zone and last weeks game was exhibit #1. Shanny play calling in red zone is a major contribution to their failure.

In New Orleans? He doesn't play defense, so what can be expected?

How long are you Chargers fans gonna whine about that? Just curious...

Awhile. I don't think I have ever seen a ref stand up and announce that they messed up so bad they can't fix it.

I don't put a lot of blame for this season on Shanahan (as a coach) or Cutler. They have both done about as much as could be expected from them.
:fishing: Until Denver gets a defense that can play, this team will not be able to make the next step.
For every great throw Culter makes, he seems to negate it with an equally terrible toss. When the run is working, Shanny needs to stay with it and not continue to force the pass

I can agree with that.
