He isn't a cover artist. How pathetic would a super bowl half time show with a cover artist be?
At least it wouldn't be Michael Jackson or Madonna
Good pointCounting on this happening given the NFL's legendary sense of humor

Classic FFA corn hole. And thus began the 6 page debate on the definition of "cover song".
ETA: For the record, I agree with NCC.

There's no way that enough people agree with msommer to get this thing to 6 pages. And thus began the 6 page debate on the definition of "cover song".

I really hate what the Super Bowl has become, and I despise the half time shows. I wish the event could somehow just go back to being about football. Since that idea is in the "never going to happen" file, why not Weird Al? He is very original and creative. I would likely watch his half time performance instead of changing channels like I usually do.How pathetic would a super bowl half time show with a cover artist be?
Yeah that wasn't very great or a hit.Hits? Still waitingHe's got a bunch of originals. Here's one of my favorites. So link to any of his hits that are not spoofing othersHe isn't a cover artist. How pathetic would a super bowl half time show with a cover artist be?

His career is 30+ years long, which means it's outlasted 2/3 of the careers of the artists he's parodied, he has finally hit #1 on the Billboard charts, he's not at all controversial, his music is funny, and it's harder to write a good parody than it is original songs. Not to mention that he has an impressive fan following, myself included, and for him to ask to parody your work is a sign that you've made it in the music business. The guy is a musical legend. He's got a bunch of originals. So link to any of his hits that are not spoofing othersHe isn't a cover artist. How pathetic would a super bowl half time show with a cover artist be?

I've heard it all.it's harder to write a good parody than it is original songs.
Doesn't make it any less true.I've heard it all.it's harder to write a good parody than it is original songs.
I think you've got to give a bit more credit to songwriters here.Doesn't make it any less true.I've heard it all.it's harder to write a good parody than it is original songs.
To say he's outlasted the people he's parodied isn't fair either. Every artist has a relatively small window of peak creativity. Weird Al just cherry picks the most popular songs of the day. He draws a hat and mustache on the Mona Lisa and calls is the Jonah Pizza. He's no Michelangelo.Doesn't make it any less true.I've heard it all.it's harder to write a good parody than it is original songs.
And this isn't being fair to Weird Al either. His success speaks for what he produces. To say he's outlasted the people he's parodied isn't fair either. Agree to disagree. He was the first one who came along after MTV launched. Once he got that "weird al" name in the public consciousness, he had the market cornered. If you do something exclusively for 30 years you're likely to get better and better at it.And this isn't being fair to Weird Al either. Parody artists are a dime a dozen, and he certainly wasn't the first. He's also not exclusively a parody artist. He's written many original songs in many different musical styles, showing a versatility unheard of today.Agree to disagree. He was the first one who came along after MTV launched. If he didn't use the 3 biggest pop songs of last year (and other hits) on his album and the album was full of parodies of songs nobody had ever heard of, do you think we'd be talking about him now? as the guys on ESPN say, c'mon man.Parody artists are a dime a dozen, and he certainly wasn't the first. the NFL likes what's popular, correct? Never mind that the guy has a pretty big following, something that comes with being around for thirty years, but he finally has a #1 album, and I'd be willing to bet that your average Joe on the street could name a song or two of his. So while it would be a great idea for the NFL to bring him in for halftime, they probably won't, and we'll be forced to change the channel for a half hour until the show's over.If he didn't use the 3 biggest pop songs of last year (and other hits) on his album and the album was full of parodies of songs nobody had ever heard of, do you think we'd be talking about him now? as the guys on ESPN say, c'mon man.Parody artists are a dime a dozen, and he certainly wasn't the first. They need that like a space shuttle needs a screen door. The NFL needs more country music.
Cowboy Monkey Rodeo: http://youtu.be/dDZtH-_RDDUPlease no. Really stupid idea. Best thing would be to make halftime shorter and do something else.
I read a snippet of an interview with him that he wanted to do a Star Trek:TNG parody of Let It Go (Make It So), but he ran into a problem he didn't have earlier in his career: Because of YouTube, anybody can get a parody out online relatively quick, and someone had already done that. Weird Al said it forces him have to come up with and produce parodies quicker than he had to in the past.Fair enough.
I've been hoping for a Frozen cover from him, but to no avail. Disney probably put the kibosh on that.
Let it Go practically writes itself...
Let it go, can't hold it back anymore...

He could bump the kittens out of the puppy bowl halftimeHalf time of the bud bowl maybe
I'd rather watch the cats.He could bump the kittens out of the puppy bowl halftimeHalf time of the bud bowl maybe
He should do a parody version and call it "I Hate Myself For Loving You".Whether or not he does the Super Bowl, I think he should do the next incarnation of the Sunday Night theme song.
It's to the point where I'd prefer 15 minutes of break with nothing happeningPlease no. Really stupid idea. Best thing would be to make halftime shorter and do something else.
Weird Al's popularity pre-dates MTV and has outlasted MTV.He may be a music legend but it's because of MTV and the talent of the artists he parodies. he was the nerdy guy who made goofy videos and filled a niche in the 80's.
I like the outside the box thinking here.Cowboy Monkey Rodeo: http://youtu.be/dDZtH-_RDDUPlease no. Really stupid idea. Best thing would be to make halftime shorter and do something else.
