Weird dream, need analysis/what is your strangest dream? (1 Viewer)

Had a bizarre dream last night and besides the obvious (ball cancer), need to figure out what is wrong with me.

Dream starts, I look out a window and see a small skunk behind a baby/toddler sitting in a yard. I don't recognize this baby/toddler or the yard, and debate going out there as I dont really want to get sprayed by the skunk. Then as I watch, the skunk gets its claws into the baby's shirt at the back of the neck and pulls the baby down backwards. It then takes a long thin pink stick and while holding it in its paw (hello, no opposable thumb) pushes the stick into the baby's ear. I clearly see the baby's expression as it pierces its eardrum (I assume), and then continues to push it in further as I see the life drain from the baby's eyes as it pierces its brain.  As the mother (I assume) runs up and grabs the baby, I wake up.

Like WTF? No alcohol was consumed yesterday, I didnt eat anything funky, and had gotten a little something-something from the missus that morning, so all systems were normal. This is easily the most bizarre dream I have had in my life.

Do I need to see a professional, or can one of you guys help me out here?

Also, what is the strangest dream you recall having?

I dreamt  my dog drew Darth Vader in round 1 of the fantasy football playoffs....  the name of the matchup was "My Dog v. Darth Vader".

No idea what your dream means....

I keep having dreams where they turn out to be dreams inside of dreams.  Like Inception.  Last night, I was talking to my wife about something when I awoke from my dream.  I was in a room with my dad and he said I was mumbling in my sleep and asked what I was dreaming about.  I said I was dreaming about (my wife) but can't remember what it was about.  Then I woke up in a room with my mom and she said I was mumbling in my sleep and asked me what I was dreaming about.  I told her it was crazy, because I was dreaming about this same conversation but with my dad.  Then I woke up and my wife looked at me and said, "Jesus Christ, shut the hell up.  You're so loud when you sleep."  Sadly, this was not a dream.

That was rude of your wife.  Want me to send the skunk to your house to take care of her?

My wife is great with these types of comments.  I forget what movie we were at, but it was a sad part of the movie.  And I cry at movies all of the time.  I'm like the Dumb and Dumber guys watching an AT&T commercial.  Anyway, the part is a slow building sadness.  You know its coming and I can feel my eyes welling up.  And as the sad part happens I look over to my wife to commiserate with her.  And she leans into me and says, "Can you stop chewing so loud?"

How do you know you're not dreaming now?

To see a skunk in your dream suggests that you are driving people away or turning them off.  Alternatively, the dream indicates that your suppressed anger is on the verge of exploding. You are not expressing your true feelings even though you do not agree with a decision
To see a dead baby in your dream symbolizes the ending of something that was once a part of you. If you dream that you are trying to snort up a dead baby, then it means that you are refusing to move onto a new stage of life. You are holding onto a dead past.

This one's pretty simple but it could be really important.

There's three elements here. The easiest one is that you were dreaming about talking in your sleep because you were actually talking in your sleep.

The next level down is that you were aware of the fact you're doing it but you didn't know how to fix it.  So you dreamed that you tried to wake up, which is how you fix it, but ít didnt work because you didn't actually try to wake up.  You were dreaming about trying to fix it, and failing to fix it. That's a very restless sleep you were having.

Which brings us to the third level, that you are generally stressed, and you're not totally sure why.  You dreamed that the three people who are arguably the most important to you as people you'd ask for help when something is wrong are asking you why you're stressed.  That's a really big statement that your mind is reaching out for help with something that's wrong.

I'm not trying to stress you out here but this is one i would take seriously.  You need to figure out what is wrong.  It might be general stress, or something specific that you're kind of in denial about.  I don't know about that.  What worries me more is that this is a physical issue where your brain is like dude something is wrong but you don't have the ability to figure out what.  Are you getting weird aches and pains?  Getting enough sleep?  Having trouble with drugs or alcohol?  Do you feel generally fatigued?

I'll be honest, this one freaks me out a little because it could be a health issue.  Take some time to assess what is going on in your body.  If you haven't gotten a physical recently, get one. We're getting older and sometimes this #### is our body telling us something.

Had this one a week ago when I had a chance to take an afternoon nap.

In the dream I woke up on the floor next to a coffee table in a hotel lobby.  I try to find my room, but it's just a maze and I end up right back in the lobby.  I ask the hotel concierge if she can point me to my room but I still can't find it and end up stuck in the maze again.

Now I wake on a couch in the hotel lobby.  The concierge acts like she's trying to help me, but I pretty much say, "screw you lady, you pointed me in the wrong direction before" and decide to take a different hallway.  This hallway looks like the lower levels of an old ship with the hallway lined with bulkhead doors.  The lower 1/4 of the walls are dark green and the upper 3/4 of the walls are white. (I may have saw something like this in a movie).  Still can't find my room and wake up again in the lobby.

Other than running into some attractive ladies along the way, these scenes keep repeating themselves.  I'm feeling like Spinal Tap trying to find the stage, but at this point I figure out I'm dreaming.  I try to wake myself up from the dream, but can't.  I keep waking up in the hotel lobby.  In my dream I'm starting to panic.  I'm shouting at myself to wake up and trying to slap myself.  I keep seeing flashing of the couch I'm sleeping on in real life, but I can't wake up.  I'm in full panic mode now.  I keep waking up in the lobby.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to die here.

Finally a notification from my phone IRL wakes me up.  The funny thing is I was expecting to wake up exhausted with my heart beating rapidly, but I woke up feeling calm like I just had the best nap of my life.  Maybe it was the relief.

Weird.

If you'd woken up stressed I'd say this was aThis one sounds kind of like an action adventure dream.  I like those. Like a little movie from your brain to you.

This movie is a short film that's got a groundhog day vibe to it.  You need to do something but you don't quite know what.  The walls look like the grass and the sky.  There's generically some things to look at - you're in a capitalist maze, you want to get out and can't, you wake up and do the same thing every day and it doesn't seem to get you anywhere, something inside you is screaming that you have to get out of this but you don't know how.

It sounds to me like you're in a rut.  You have enough time to take a nap but you want to have enough time to do something more, yet you keep waking up in the same place and wandering aimlessly and not getting help from anyone.

The good news is you're relatively content.  Just.. bored.  This isn't a stress dream. It's a signal that you want something more though. Maybe start working on that novel or that garden or whatever your thing is.

Dude, I don't know if you have some psych training, or are just riffing here.  This pretty much nailed a lot of things.

ETA:  I often have dreams of trying to find something/my way, but end up in a maze and right back where I started.

I'm glad you found it helpful.  No, I'm not a doctor and none of this is medical or other advice.  Sometimes people find it helpful sometimes I'm way off. I'm obviously going off very little information so don't put too much stock into it.

Can i ask how old you are?  Do you have kids? Want them?

Sounds like maybe you had something of significance enter your life that is no longer around and left your life before you could appreciate/enjoy it. You were afraid to engage while it was part of your life. Now that it is gone you regret not getting involved. The mother trying to save the baby is your hope the FFA can help you make sense of this! Enjoy your sleep tonight.

Hmmm...those are actually interesting.  I know as President of my local youth hockey league there is always someone unhappy with me or talking crap about me.  I try not to let it bother me, but I know it does on some level.

As for the baby thing, my mom recently finished up her chemo and radiation treatment for lung cancer.  Will get the test results back in a few weeks to see how effective they were. She's beat skin cancer and breast cancer, and when she found out about the lung cancer said.."well, I'll just #######' beat this too".  That may be weighing on my mind as well.

You may be onto something there Col...if you ever decide to get out of the professional hugging business, you may have a prosperous career ahead of you as a shrink.  If I'm ever down NOLA way, beers are on me.  :suds:

A few things that stand out to me

First, this wasn't inside. It was outside.. happening to someone else.  You have kids, but it's not your kid..

Second, something else is hurting this baby.  That's as bad an action as someone can take in your dream.  And you're aware of it.  But again, it's not you.

Third, it's a skunk.  There's two things i know about skunks.  I don't like them, and i don't want to mess with them.  So you don't.

Fourth, you watch it happen. You didn't act, and you see the consequences of your own inaction.  And they're ugly.

I feel like you've got some guilty feelings right now.  You let something bad happen to someone else because you didn't want to put yourself in harm's way, and now it's bothering you.

That doesn't necessarily mean you did something wrong.  Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions and err on the side of your family.  It's normal.  It's also normal to feel guilt.

The fact that your guilt materialized as a baby with its eyes going lifeless in front of you, though... to me that would feel like i might not be totally comfortable with my decision.

(Also possible, you or your wife want another kid but you got snipped and feel a little ####ty about it.  Or you somehow got her pregnant and your #### knows it shot the good stuff.  But i doubt it )

All very interesting to think about (my undergrad degree is in Psychology, so I always found this stuff fascinating). As far as the bolded, I've thought about it, and I can't think of anything I feel guilty about.  In the dream it went from, "oh there's a skunk behind that baby" to "what in the hell am I seeing" very quickly...would have really been no time to react.  As for the last portion in parenthesis, my wife and I were both totally on board with the decision to snip, and have never doubted it was the right decision for our family.

There may however be something to the helplessness I felt in the dream when it happened, to the feeling of not being able to personally do anything to physically help my mom' in her current battle with cancer.

Are you sure you didn't recently run over a skunk's nest with a lawnmower, Guru-style?

You pretty much nailed the being content with my job/life part but being bored.  Something that I've known for quite a while, so that was interesting.  I don't really care if it's that same thing someone would tell me if I called a late night 1-800 infomercial number, it was still interesting.

I used to be able to lucid dream.  Realize I was dreaming in a dream and pretty much direct where things would go from there.  Had some fantastic "dreaming" experiences. Wish I could get that back.

So Skipdog is empathizing with the skunk with suppressed anger issues that has a hard time moving on from the past?

I'm exhausted.  Because even in my dreams I can't get a good night's sleep.

I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice but I would talk to my doctor about getting a sleep study.  Could be sleep apnea. Do you ever wake up gasping for air or feel like you've been holding your breath?
Only on those nights where my wife is pissed at me.  When I wake she is always hovering over me with a pillow in her hands asking if perhaps another pillow would make me more comfortable.  What a wife!

After thinking about it another day, I think the baby was a zombie, and the skunk was trying to save the rest of us.

Pepe Le Grimes to the rescue.

It's not sleep apnea.  I am lucky enough to have terrible allergies that seem ridiculous.  I went to a dermatologist and she told me that I most likely have a mild allergy to heat and my own skin.  Yeah.  Even I repulse me.  So what happens is, when I go to sleep with covers, heat builds under them and I start to break out in one big hive.  And the heat makes the skin allergy worse.  As I've gotten older, it seems to have gotten worse.  And getting a good night's sleep has become very difficult for me.  Sometimes I can go for a couple of weeks without much issue.  But then I can go for a couple of weeks where it's terrible.  It sucks.

And I've always been a vivid dreamer.  My dreams are wild and I usually remember almost all of them in entirety.  Luckily I don't have many nightmares, but when I do they can be scary.  I seem to have more stress dreams than nightmares, but this has been the norm since I was a kid.  When my allergies are at their worst, that's when the stress dreams get trippy.  But I don't think it's anything health related.  Unless I eventually die from this allergy, which I assume is how I'll go.  One day die of asphyxiation in my sleep from an allergic reaction I sleep through.  Oh well.

But, if you want to diagnose a dream, I have one for you.  Again, since I've been a kid, I've experienced this.  It can be any dream and can be any type of dream.  But if I go to turn on the lights in a dream and they lights don't come on, immediately I know it's going to turn into a nightmare.  This dark figure begins to stalk me, and it hides in the shadows.  I can never see it other than glimpses of its darkness as it moves closer and closer, but always just out of my peripheral.  As I've gotten older, I've become aware of it happening.  If I flip a light switch and no light comes on, I tell the people in my dream to leave because something evil is coming.  I'm immediately aware I'm in a dream and begin yelling at the darkness that I'm not afraid and try to wake myself up.

Usually I can wake myself up but there are times I can't and then I begin to question if it really is a dream or not.  That's when my worst nightmares happen.  Seems like a weird recurring dream to have for 40 years.
