Welker appeared to suffer the injury while attempting to make a tackle on an interception thrown by quarterback Tom Brady late in the second quarter.

The injury was announced early in the third quarter with the Patriots trailing 27-10.

Welker was New England's leading receiver last season, catching 86 passes for 848 yards. He's part of a veteran group of receivers with the Patriots that also includes Deion Branch and Chad Ochocinco. Welker caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the second quarter Saturday for New England's first touchdown of the game.

Meanwhile, Patriots cornerback Jonathan Wilhite left the field under his own power after being examined by members of the team's medical staff. He was banged up on a third-down play early in the third quarter.

More encouraging...

DETROIT — New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker left Saturday night's NFL exhibition game at Detroit with a neck injury and did not return.

The team did not say when Welker was hurt, but Boston radio station WEEI reported that the injury occurred while Welker was making a tackle after a Lions interception. The injury was announced early in the third quarter with the Patriots trailing 27-10. New England lost the game, 34-10.

Welker told the Boston Herald after the game that he was "OK." The newspaper reported Welker walked out of the visitors' locker room at Ford Field.

"He's a tough guy. There's nobody tougher than Wes Welker. Mentally, physically, he's as good as there is. He's a big part of our offense, a huge part of the offense," Patriots quarterback Tom Brady told reporters.

Any updates on the situation? I'm trying to decide who to Flex this week between Welker and Ingram (NON PPR) and I need to decide by tonight!

Welker has been practicing for over a week. I don't expect him to be slowed at all, but the injury report for Pats players is not out yet seeing that they are playing on Monday.
