What are the chances of one person winning 3 SB squares (1 Viewer)

My MIL won the 1st qtr, 3rd qtr, and final all with 3 different squares. Are the odds of doing so as simple as 1/100 * 1/100 * 1/100 = 1 in a million?

Uhhhh, no.How many squares did she have?
Ah yes... she had 10. So her odds were... 10/100 * 9/100 * 8/100? so about 7/10,000
This is still wrong. What exactly is the problem you're trying to solve? Is it "what are the odds that a person who buys 10 squares will win three or more quarters with three different squares?"For one thing, you're not taking into account the halftime score, which she failed to win, but could have been substituted for one of the other wins, assuming the question I posed above is what you're trying to figure out.

Huh?My MIL hit the 1st qtr, 3rd qtr, and final scores last night with 3 different boxes. Im just trying to figure out what the appx odds of this happening are? I dont need an exact answer. Jeez

A million to one shot doc... a million to one.

We need to know what "this" is to be able to answer your question. If your mother-in-law had hit in quarters 2,3, and 4 instead of 1, 3 and 4 would that count as "this"? What if your mother-in-law had hit in quarters 1, 3 and 4, but used the same box to win two different quarters?

It's probably pretty close to her odds of hitting 3 times, even with one hitting twice. I'm going with .1 * .1 * .1 * .9. The .9 is the chance she's not going to hit in a given quarter. Which makes it .09%. This is presuming all squares are created equal.

I spelled out the exact scenario. How much more clear could I be? I told you exactly what quarters she hit, I told you exactly how many boxes she bought, and I told you the fact that she hit on 3 different boxes.

Yes, you told us what happened. But you haven't properly articulated what we're supposed to be calculating the odds of. Maybe it would help if I used this example:"I saw Mark, a friend of mine from high school, on the train in Paris last week! What are the odds of that?"

Some people may try to figure out the odds of you running into a friend from high school generally.

Some people may try to figure out the odds of you running into that particular friend from high school.

Some people may try to figure out the odds of you running into that particular friend in a foreign country.

Some people may try to figure out the odds of you running into that particular friend in Paris specifically.

Some people may try to figure out the odds of you running into that particular friend on the train in Paris.

Some people may try to figure out the odds of you running that particular friend on the train in Paris last week.

The answer to all of these questions would be very different, yet any one of them could plausibly be the answer you are looking for.

I think he's asking "What are the odds of his MIL winning on 3 squares"... which has to be something on the order of 1 in a couple billion, I'd imagine, considering how many mothers-in-law there are.

I ended up with 2 and 2 as my scores on two different SB square contests. What are the odds of that??

Yeah, like one team was going to kick 4 FGs and the other team get a safety. Could have just lit that money on fire.

CALCULATE THE ODDS OF THE EXACT SCENARIO I POSTED
So you're trtying to calculate the odds of her going three for three, as opposed to three for four? That seems like an odd thing to calculate given that there are four quarters.
:moneybag: She won 3 quarters. There are 4 quarters in a game. Im trying to calculate the odds of winning 3 of 4 quarters. Not sure what makes you assume otherwise.

I already gave you the answer.1% +/-1%

Because this is the first time you've actually said " Im trying to calculate the odds of winning 3 of 4 quarters." This is a good start. I asked the following question back at the start of the thread:
"what are the odds that a person who buys 10 squares will win three or more quarters with three different squares?"
Is that the question we're supposed to be trying to figure out?

Because you clarified that you wanted to calculate the odds of the exact scenario you posted (you even put that in really, really big type). The exact scenario you posted was winning the first, third and final quarters. That will result in different odds than winning any three of the four quarters.

So did we ever figure out what the hell shady was asking?
I think it's this. What are the odds that a person wins 3 times, with 3 different squares. Does not matter the order, just they won 3 of 4 times but with different squares.
