What do you not like about Hakeen Nicks? (1 Viewer)

The negative thread about Nicks. I will create threads about a few of the players in the 2009 draft. Why should I not draft this guy in my dynasty rookie draft?

He bloomed late?? Seriously, i do not have much, although when I saw the skills challenge last week on ESPN, he messed up big time on the short 10 yards flurry of passes (via a machine). He dropped like 4-5 when no one else dropped more than 3 (even the announcers were stumped), but once he made his way through the rest of the obstacle course, he looked absolutely $$$. Maybe he ends up with Brandon Lloyd syndrome (don't throw me the easy crap...lol), but chances are we will be wondering in four years why others were selected before him at WR.

Luckily he won't get thrown a flurry of passes in the NFL.

Not a burner, struggles to get separation

No effort blocking (Possibly Lazy?)

Ballooned after combine (Possibly Lazy?)

Inconsistent pass receiver where he doesn't attack the ball.

Very weak red zone option.

I think he could make a nice #2 NFL WR, he's not somebody i'd really target in a fantasy league though.

Not a special athlete compared to the field of first round WRs. Not quick off the snap and may have trouble separating.

Reports around the web indicate Nicks has shed the extra weight and is back down to 212.

I'm not worried.

I read a post on a message board that he is a prima donna, I already removed Crabs from my board so Nicks is gone too.
You're going to be removing a lot of guys from your board.
My post was sarcasm and related to a post about Crabtree that HC made a big thing about by a message board poster Big Nerd.

So, what are your negative thoughts on Nicks?

Lacks a second gear to run away from defenders down the field. Isn’t the kind of vertical threat NFL scouts crave and is forced to rely more on his build and route running ability than his pure deep speed

iv had nicks as my #2 wr since the off season. love his style of play.

More importantly what does Bignerd think?

Wed Apr 22 (Rotoworld) Speaking on NFL Network, Charley Casserly said that Hakeem Nicks couldn't run ten routes without being gassed at a workout last week and didn't finish the workout.Analysis: Nicks apparently lost the weight he gained after a hamstring injury, but is still out of shape. Mike Lombardi also worries that Nicks could struggle to separate at the next level. The issues could cause Nicks to slip into round two, ala Dwayne Jarrett.

 Jarrett's one of the few WRs I've biffed on lately. Simply mentioning him in association with Nicks makes my skin crawl.

The only negative thing I see is lack of speed and wiggle.

I agree with you on his speed, but the wiggle looks fine to me.

He plays a very physical game, which more than makes up for the speed issue IMO.

I don't like that I haven't been able to land him in any of my drafts so far. And I'll be out of positon on the next one, picking at 1.11.

Then the only other draft I have left is an Auction. I might be able to grab him there.

His 15 pound weight gain was largely attributable to his hamstring injury and he quickly got back to ideal weight soon after. What makes you say he is a very weak red zone option? Has fantastic and very consistent hands and while he is 6'1" has very long arms. Not sure why that woud be very weak.

Nicks freakishly big hands should help a lot too.
By the way, when Nicks arrived at Giants Stadium for the first time and the team started handing out equipment they didn’t have gloves big enough to fit his enormous hands. Apparently he wears Size XXXXL gloves - - and even those are a little tight.
Although Ramses Barden(number 13 standing next to 6'6" 300+ lbs OT William Beatty... and not looking small) is a monster and I would expect to see his number called specifically on some red zone packages.Edit to add: To stay on topic, maybe this is my homer glasses on but I can't find much anything to dislike about Nicks outside of his lack of top end burner speed.

He catches well, runs strong routes, plays big and touch, works hard, steps up big in big games, played in a pro-style offense, looked strong (very early) in rookie camp, and was drafted into a situation with a wide open competition at the WR spot and stability at the QB position. I'm looking for things not to like and I'm just not seeing them.

Anyone think Barden has a high ceiling? Currently in the late stage of a draft (Late 4th) and deciding between him, Shawn Nelson, Mike Goodson and a few IDPs.

While he has a high ceiling, there is a ton of risk with Barden also, from a fantasy perspective. Even though he played against inferior competition in college, the guy is STILL going to be physically dominant against many of the NFL's corners. If he can learn to get off the line, and if Nicks can command the respect of another teams #1 CB, it will be tough to stop Barden on a fade - saw film of him doing it over and over in college, adjusted well to the ball, good hands. That said, it WAS inferior competition and there are a lot of 6'5"+ guys out there that never amout to anything. But, Barden is worth a flyer, especially if Nicks pans out.Back to Nicks to stay on topic, high end speed is my only real question and perhaps limited upside in that he could be a really good guy for a while but I dont see Nicks' skill set nor situation primed for stud numbers. Could be a nice #2 fantasy WR and upside is a #1a but not uber stud. Then again, if you are talking Boldin upside and just a solid player all around with great hands, that ain't too shabby vs. a Moss upside and 90% chance of meh or bust.

Interesting comment. If Nicks pans out Barden is worth a flier. But, if Nicks is a bust that means Barden is nothing also? Doesn't make sense. If Nicks busts that's just one more opportunity for Barden to step up and become the main WR for the Giants.

Barden has as much of a chance to succeed as every other WR in this draft class. None stick out and that includes Crabtree who went to a run first team with weak QB's.

Nicks is James Jones with less experience and I don't remember anybody having a gasm over James Jones.
James Jones is a pretty good player who could potentially thrive if he was in a wide open situation like NYG.That said, Nicks and Jones definitely aren't clones of one another. Nicks has better playing speed. Jones is probably stronger.
